  • There are two avenues to using your GI Bill abroad:
    1. Do a semester abroad while enrolled in an American University
    2. Attend a foreign university for the entirety of you higher education.
    There are pros and cons to both as well as warnings to be aware of. Going into this with the right information will help you get the most out of the opportunity.
    As suggested in the episode, check out the GI Bill Comparison Tool: www.va.gov/education/gi-bill-...

    Really good information. I just came across your channel and find it very informative. Can you provide any advice/information on how to go about getting your benefits re-instated after the 15 year mark due to a major illness or medical condition? Finding information on this process is turning out to be difficult. Thanks for anything you can provide.

      Thank you Keith. I appreciate your support and feedback.
      That is something I know very little about. I only know one person who was able to do it based on the argument a VA disability caused him to put it off. He did need to hire legal help though. It wasn't an easy battle.

    Awesome video man! One of the most helpful vet benefits channels I've found yet. While I'm researching hard on my own, would you know if chapter 31 covers study abroad costs if the foreign college is partnered with the American university you are attending? So many different answers and even my VR&E CHAP31 counselor doesn't fully know.

    • @jasonburds
      @jasonburds  Рік тому +1

      Thank you! ah man, if your VRC doesn't know, I shouldn't say anything definitive... I would expect so though. VR&E covers so much stuff, it all just has to be tied to your ratings and how it'll help you succeed. Even if it doesn't cover everything, it's still worth it the experience. Just work to maximize where you can. Start applying and you'll hit a wall somewhere with what they're willing to pay for.

      Not sure what your plan is in how you want to implement it, but I am currently attending school online using the VR&E program while living temporarily in Mexico. I'm living here on a 6 month tourist Visa. I'm about 3 months in so far and havent had any issues. And just like he states in this video, the stipend goes much further in a more affordable cost of living country.

    Thanks for the upload Jason very helpful video! If I got my degree in Mexico (sociology) is it hard to get a job in the States? Also wondering if they would accept my credits I have my associates done, EAS in one year.

    • @jasonburds
      @jasonburds  Рік тому

      I think the degree is more important than the school. Just because you got to a school out of country doesn't mean you'll have a hard time getting hired in the states. I think you will have the same problems anyone else with a sociology degree would expect to have. As far as accepting credits, I would contact the school and ask them that directly. I would do this sooner than later as it may cause you to change plans.

    Appreciate the information, what if the foreign school i want to attend is not in the GI comparison tool?

    • @jasonburds
      @jasonburds  2 роки тому +1

      Then you can go through the long process of trying to get them approved for GI Bill. Someone has to be first, but it might be a pain.

    Hi, I enjoyed your video. Quick question that I cannot find an answer on. If you attend a study abroad semester, directly through a US university, does your bah housing allowance reflect that American school, or is it adjusted to the flat abroad bah allowance? I ask because if you find a stuffy abroad program thorough a schoo, say in California, vs Georgia, the bah difference would be sizable. Any help on this would be great!

    • @jasonburds
      @jasonburds  Рік тому +1

      If it's directly through a US university and not third party, you won't get BAH. You'll get set up with whatever living the school provides.

    Great content. What about living overseas, enrolled in online classes at a US school???

    • @jasonburds
      @jasonburds  Рік тому +1

      Thanks! If you're a full time online student, you get half the national average for BAH. Right now it's somewhere around $980/mo. You can live wherever you want while doing that.

    • @jasonburds

      Seems unlikely. But maybe you could find a full immersion program that qualifies for the GI Bill.

    How long does it take to get a program approved at a university?

    • @jasonburds
      @jasonburds  2 роки тому

      You've gotta get in. That's the longer part of the process assuming the school is already registered with the VA

    Be careful with using your GI Bill abroad. Make sure the school is still enroll in the GI Bill program. If they happen to withdraw for any reason, the VA will not issue you or the school any money.

      Definitely need to stay on the ball more than a US school. Good input!
