This was not at the Baked Potato. It was at Catalina's. The person who recorded this show gave me a copy and I put it on houseofdrumming years ago. The whole set is available in the media section of the site. Some pretty sick drumming.
Man, I was really young when I heard this. It was from your site... It's still in my memory. I've listenned it thousands of times... WHAT A GREAT SHARE.
Vinnie is undoubtedly the best drummer alive today. He has done things on the drums that no one can ever match. His sense of rhythm is simply astounding. There is no better inspiration than listening to and watching him play. I am in awe.
This drumming is so good it's obscene. Vinnie really lets it all hang out on this one. Obviously one of the all time greats and he still plays at a very high level. Love the simple yet classy riff of this song that gave Vinnie the opportunity to go off. Thanks for an incredible video!!
amazing as usual. Such a master of time/displacement/playing in outside time/meters. Hands off to the band for keeping it rock steady while he plays all that. Nice tune too!
They had to work hard to keep up with vinnie!! That guy has no restraints, a true master. its hard to call yourself a drummer after hearing this guy but we must strive on!
2:10 is probably the sickest thing I've ever heard. I could be wrong, but if you count a 5:2 polyrhythm (2 quarter notes ??) over the piano vamp then it lines up with vinnie's "new" groove. ugh i can't even....
If you aren't familiar with it, check out "A Little Green Rosetta" on Joe's Garage- Vinnie plays 5:4 over a reggae beat... Vinnie plays 4 quarter notes, then a "big five" (five "quarters" in the bar of 4) then proceeds to play a beat in 5/8 in quintuplets in the bar. My brain hurts just trying to describe it.
I can listen this forever when sickness strated about 2:10 Vinnie on FIRE Long life for King of drums ! (I´m just started few his groowes) even i play practice whole my life I quess never can play like Vinnie ...but some notes ;)
Metric modulation ftw! I've been jammin with these fills for suuuuuch a long time and they are tuff as shit! Vinnie makes it sound easy and straightforward even thou its so complex. Amazing drummer!
WAY MORE TRUE ! That's the spirit Luis ! . Vinnie has a TON to say about all that crap . It's not about him , other drummers , being better than , ego , etc . May be on his web site I think .
Yep, great metric modulation, switching subdivisions in an instant, syill locking in ultra-tighly at any beat. I'm not into comparing musicians (as in Olympic Games), but I just remember another dude really capable of crazy metric modulations and ultra-odd time sigs without ever losing command: Simon Phillips.
Hey does anyone know the name of the alb this song is played on?? And does anyone know any other good older albums that vinnie played on that sound like this?? REALLY NEED TO KNOW!! thx!! This sounds so CRAZY GOOD!!
I always think it's much harder for the rest of the band to keep time while the drummer is jamming all over the place, kudos to the rest of the band for keeping time while Vinnie was all over the place showing off
Hi Steve - thank you for clarifying this! Do you know what year this is from, and whether the other players are indeed Pasqua and Patitucci? I'm writing a paper analyzing Vinnie's solo on track 7 (holy #$*!) and I need to provide accurate discographical information. Any other info you have about this set would be immensely helpful. Thanks again.
Mwahahaha! That's exactly what I told myself long ago and never tried workimng my ass off to be a great performer both as a pianist and drummer (at some point I felt my limitations). I went for composung/arranging instead (I guess I'm kinda decenand solid). And play for fun within my limitations. If anyone says I suck - I will respond smiling: yup I know, just having fun doing the best I can. Now about Vinnie: he is one of the most awesome all around drummers.
If you're listening to this and like or like this kind of tune, check out Whippersnapper by Wayne Krantz specifically this live version with Zack Danziger no drums. Truly awesome music, just like this! ua-cam.com/video/i2jaRZ_OzcY/v-deo.html

Sir, you're a great drummer and a great teacher too. Love your style! Ciao Steve

Hope someone soon makes a worthy documentary of this amazing drummer. He's just incredible!!!
He Really Deserves It.
He's Vinnie. Noone Gets Cart Blanche Like Vinnie or Weckl.
Vinnie is undoubtedly the best drummer alive today. He has done things on the drums that no one can ever match. His sense of rhythm is simply astounding. There is no better inspiration than listening to and watching him play. I am in awe.
Amen a thousand times.
Wow. Vinnie is like a time machine. Can take you backwards and forwards and always bring you back home....he's the best.
The Greatest. Vinnie Is an Alien. Weckl Is Perfect. Both Are EPIC.
I could listen to this all day...
The groove he starts at 1:44 is one the most ominous sounding, perfectly syncopated things anyone could put to this piece of music.
I hope he plays Drums till he is 100...He Will Still Be Killing It...

there can not ever be anything better than this!
Outstanding!
They had to work hard to keep up with vinnie!! That guy has no restraints, a true master. its hard to call yourself a drummer after hearing this guy but we must strive on!
@killercrabman
nice compliment, but at this level musicians have very good time and don’t rely on the drummer. They didn’t struggle at all…
OOh yes! Listen to that ride! The time...so elastic and tight all at once...Vinnie is a true genius!Metric modulation!!!!
Oh sweet mother Mary this is unbelievable
I don't have words to say. I'm just stunned. Shit.
Vinnie the Drum God Colaiuta... hands DOWN
The master🔥🙌🏻
2:10 is probably the sickest thing I've ever heard.
I could be wrong, but if you count a 5:2 polyrhythm (2 quarter notes ??) over the piano vamp then it lines up with vinnie's "new" groove. ugh i can't even....
yeah and hes not even playing in 5 in there, 4/4 inside 5:2
I'm even more confused the more I listen to it.
i think he played triplet note grouped 4, maybe incorrect :)
slow it down to 0.5. hes playing dotted 8th notes on his hihat and making that the pulse (every 3 16th notes)

Anything Vinnie plays is a must hear
yeah this live is awsome!!!! vinnie always kicks asses....
Luis Thank You SO MUCH for Sharing This Gem...
It's a sickness. He can't help it. Unbelievable. 10-stars.
A beautiful sickness.
I was just Mindf***ed LOL Thx for sharing :)
MAESTRO !!!!!
He makes all these changes seem so effortlessly. Other drummers make gopro vids of 10% of this stuff
I needed so badly to hear this! Deepest gratitude for posting.
Can't get any better, can it?
The master !
Vinnie sands Forever Great!!!
absolute master!!
mostruoso
yess, yess, yesss
I can listen this forever when sickness strated about 2:10 Vinnie on FIRE Long life for King of drums ! (I´m just started few his groowes) even i play practice whole my life I quess never can play like Vinnie ...but some notes ;)
To say he mastered odd meters would b the understatement of the century
A mechanical genius!!
Awesome Modulation Mastery
this is fucking blowing my mind. i haven't been this taken back by a drummer since i first heard chris dave.
It's great fun ..drumming..we can't all be this brilliant..but if you enjoy t.do it.:>
I love vinnie, he is the best in book.
Wowzer. Thats hot.
@jfreshmusic1 Vinnie's playing on Allan Holdsworth's album 'Secrets' is insane as well.
Yes...Vinnie is an Alien...That Brain Thinks in the absence of Effort...Time and Time again...The Math blurs quite a bit..He is a Genius.....Period..
this should be more like "Vinnie Colaiuta...Master" .bar none.
whoa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It sounds like Tony Williams at times. Awesome playing. Especially that modulation he goes to at like 4:11
Well, he bought a yellow Gretsch kit on tour with Zappa because he was obsessed with Tony at that time. No doubt he was.
Vinnie has been playing on a level not surpased by even Tony W.
Yeah, it's Alan Pasqua and John P. I don't know when the show was, sorry. Good luck with the paper.
For the love of the instrument of course!:-)
Que rico suena!!
@NicThornsberryDrums Right. The "soloing while everyone else keeps time for the listener" dealeo, like on Lifetime :-)
It's because the meter of the song is changing so it sounds like he's missing beats but it's really just the time signature changing.
Metric modulation ftw! I've been jammin with these fills for suuuuuch a long time and they are tuff as shit! Vinnie makes it sound easy and straightforward even thou its so complex. Amazing drummer!
Metric modulation at 2:10, 2:34, 3:50, and 4:08. Love it!!!
2:10 look at those crazy metric modulations.. damn! ..
WAY MORE TRUE ! That's the spirit Luis ! . Vinnie has a TON to say about all that crap . It's not about him , other drummers , being better than , ego , etc . May be on his web site I think .

wwwaaaahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!
omfg.
look up vinnie colaiuta superimposed metric modulation.. theres an article about it
Hey does anyone know the name of the alb this song is played on?? And does anyone know any other good older albums that vinnie played on that sound like this?? REALLY NEED TO KNOW!! thx!! This sounds so CRAZY GOOD!!
Because it's fun...
I always think it's much harder for the rest of the band to keep time while the drummer is jamming all over the place, kudos to the rest of the band for keeping time while Vinnie was all over the place showing off
The rest of the band should always be able to keep time. Without that, Mr Colaiuta's rhythmic excursions would not be possible.
Fuckin' insane....thanks for posting this!
yessir
@ludwigrx cotskie!completo ka ani bai? :)
Ricky Ficarelli gets hundreds of thousands of views and this gets 29,000? I don't want to live on this planet anymore...

One deaf, unfeeling, rhythmically ignorant person disliked this.
Dude, it was probably some jealous beta male..😂
Right

Does anybody know from which year this colaiuta/Patitucci/Pasqua Recording is?
@mrthundaboots yep. good ol time travelin
Because its fun! I don't have to play like Vinnie for it to be a worth while endeavor, Hell most prefer that you don't.
true
props to pasqua for staying in time the whole time
What is the name of this tune??
what is this track called?! I MUST KNOW!!
What song is this?
Mwahahaha! That's exactly what I told myself long ago and never tried workimng my ass off to be a great performer both as a pianist and drummer (at some point I felt my limitations). Anyone know the name of the tune? Or a tune with a similar progression?

@ludwigrx hahahah :) daot na man gud memory loss nko kut :)
@ludwigrx
i dont think i could even keep the piano tight :/ im a terrible drummer
K Zildjians and an 18" Kick Drum......
Since when was music about becoming 'the best'. Drumming is mostly self-improvement, not to compare :D
C, Am, F, G
But yeah, anyway... death metal drummers who use triggers aren't cheating.
Catholic Boy!
Zappa!
Thats superimposed metric modulation... its modulating time, but not a metric modulation per se...
Why do people even try to play drums. After hearing this its pretty much pointless.
öldürün beni bu ne
there are so much noise...
ain't that amazing
최고드러머콜라니우타.😅
I quit.
