Not to take Anything from the genius of Vinnie, but I wish more people would understand & give props to how Equally important it is to have cats on stage who can keep it altogether While a drummer like Vinnie starts to bend & stretch the time. None of what Vinnie did or does, matters unLess the cats on stage with him know what's up & can follow or know when Not to follow him. It's a Catasrophe when everyone doesn't hold up there end musically. Imagine if Abe didn't know where the "1" was, or decided to go with Vin instead of holding the quarter note walk down(which is what made what Vin sound so great)?? It would've been a Hot Mess!! LOL!! Big Ups to ALL those cats/Legends on stage!! Sorry for my long windedness… :)JT

Exactly. Greg Mathieson is a living metronome. His timeandgrooveplaying here is I N S A N E ! And their ability to make Vinnie sound so good and vice versa is just from a different planet! Players don't come better than this pack!
What an absolutely unreal monster player Vinnie is!! Abe Laboriel, Greg Mathieson and Larry Carlton are all great players as well. What a great treat to listen to, thanks for posting. I have never really heard Larry rip like that before, nice to see.
Vinnie, the one and only. There may be a lot of good drummers on the planet now, the only one I get back to is always Vinnie. He's unique. He knows how to play incredible stuff, and keeping grooving at the same time.
Just some friends jamming at the local club, I assume! All of the men are monsters! Fantastic that this was captured on video for us others! Thanks for posting this!
I think there's music notation running in his brain while he plays where he always knows exactly where he is. I often lose where the one is while listening to Vinnie, can't even imagine the mess it would be if I tried the stuff he does live with a band
This is not a band but individual (world class) musicians jamming in the same time and space. There is a lot less "following" and "listening" going on than there is "internal clock" and "individual creativity." A standard 12-bar I-IV-V blues with chord substitutions -- playing as a group is an after thought. Vinnie plays mostly straight ahead - for Vinnie - open fills, transitioning back and forth from 1/2 time to double time to time. More cymbal work from Vinnie in this rendition which is always welcome genius. An overall tight ensemble (as you'd expected) from these guys ... what makes it unique is the merging (and clashing) of individual styles and improvisational skill, the rest is another day at the office.
I used to play like this when I was 12 before I got into dynamics. Now I make sure everything I play grooves and is synchrony with the other instruments in volume and intensity. A lot of work to brush up on in this performance.
Did you fall asleep before the bass solo Larry? If you had the slightest spec of the facility and experience of Vinnie you would be too busy with gigs to dribble such complete shit. You seriously need some toilet paper for your chin mate.
+Jordan Collins Thats Abe Laboriel on bass and Greg Mathieson on keyboards. I cant tell if thats Michael Landau on guitar but if it is that is the lineup from the gig at the Baked Potato. It took me a while to track down a copy of that gig.
+fuzzylogiceire I see some other commenters are saying thats Larry Carlton on guitar so not the same lineup but I think I heard them doing this song with Landau too.
I read an interview once where he discussed it; this is one of the older ones, a 8-string that he played when touring with Koinonia in the 80's. I *think* maybe it's a Valley Arts Custom, I've seen that on forum posts, but that almost doesn't sound right either. Might be a VA though. These days it's pretty much Yamaha or Wyn, otherwise, although he's as prolific as Lee Sklar and everyone who makes guitars gives him a bass in hopes he'll show up someplace using it....

@@renaissongsmann8889 …my buddy lives within walking distance of the Baked Potato. Prior to Covid I was there plenty
Vinnie has an admirable abiltily to read and follow soloists. At the same time he brings in his own crazy stuff!
Jeff Beck Live at Ronnie Scott's - check it out....one of the great concert vids of all time. Vinnie kills.

Vinnie's sense of time is unmatched

This is groovy and in the pocket, Vinnie might be the best ever!
He cartainly is to me. Groove, carziness, unpredictability, creativity, power.

Larry Tate Yeah, guitar players are always loud.
I tend to agree with Larry Tate.

06:19 just wow!
abe laboriel and vc jamming...coolest thing ever
The problem is that whenever I see one video of this fucking drummer, I start to see another and another and I lose sleepless night. Cursed Vinnie...!
i know right !!!!
WHEN YOU SAY VINNIE YOU KNOW WHO IT IS RIGHT AWAY

Wow brother Larry absolutely killing it!!😀

That was the metric modulation, right?
+The 80/20 Drummer yep, Vin is the master of mind bending modulations
+The 80/20 Drummer id say so
Metric modulation? :)
6:15 - 6:30 is ridiculous🤑
Yes, really nice HH work! Probably have to be a drummer to pick up on it.
Thats Larry Carlton, who's as famous or more so than Vinnie.
The entire rhythm section is legendary. Look them up.
@@shicks8608 You're not kidding there!
Nice groove. Damn.
Kina buried the lead... LC rippin' it up.
What's the name of this tune? Great Videao Man! Thx
siraj nulla Greg's Groove(I'd say Greg's fkn Groove with the big balls )

@@fuzzylogiceire Yeah, if Larry's not there they'll play with Michael or just about anyone who can carry it.
there is a video in UA-cam in black and white that was taken from the back of vinnie
I don´t think so. There was Mike Landau (black & white clips) on guitar, now Larry Carlton.
Yes! Good observation! You are right!!
Not the same concert... This is Cafe Cordiale, not the Spud...
Nice seeing this lineup with Carlton rather than Landau
And Larry Carlton!
Larry Carlton And Abe Laboriel too.
Viejos amigos
What kind of bass is Abe playing?

This is a much older clip from 2001-2006, right?
+drummakid101 Similar vids have said 2000-2001-ish.
drummakid101 yes. I think it was the HOLLYWOOD SPUD larry sitting in...but i could be wrong. Slammin’ Greg and larry have a long friendship.
@@barbaramathieson4150 --- if you mean "The Baked Potato" ... and I think you do :-)
Are you Greg's other half? Mother, cousin? Sister?
Abe Laboriel?
Oh yeah!
супер круто
I thinck this is part of the show, that this guys made in the "backed potato" in LA in 2000
Nico Asinari "Baked Potato" :)
Thank you man!!!

Abe Laboriel Sr. on bass; Larry Carlton on guitar; Gregg Mathieson on keys.
GREAT!
Fuck yeahhhh
This is the SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Matheison is getting a little bit boring. Always playing the same licks.
