Ahh! I feel you man. As a kid in the States I had to listen to college radio in Atlanta to hear the bands I liked. The Jam were and still are in my top 5. The Smiths are number 1
These versions of Miserable Lie and Reel Around the Fountain are a lot better than the studio versions, I gotta say.
all instruments sound better and more natural than on the studio album ... very well recorded by the BBC I guess^

i think the version of What Difference Does It Make? is far better here than on the album, Miserable Lie is just about equal, albeit this version has a bit more pish and vinegar which i like. the version of Reel Around The Fountain on the self-titled is one of my favourite songs by the smiths though, that piano part is beautiful.
they certainly capture the feeling of being at a their live shows
Yeah the bass and drum mix is much fuller and punchier. You really get to hear how dynamic they were live. A year before I was born, sadly!

Both versions are superb: this one is raw and real, the LP version has a wall of sound that wiped the floor with everything else in the top 40 at the time. For me, both are essential for every record collection 😁

What ever became of this band ? Did they practically change the landscape of (for lack of better term) the indie scene in The UK and beyond ?
They created the indie scene if you like
ChainNonSmoker no they did not, were part of it yes, the indie scene had been around since at least 1976.
Nothing like them before or since. Broke up before ever releasing a bad LP
