What's especially great about these recordings is that the bass and drums were mixed higher, which makes it better than the album recording. The 1980 Peel session is even better.
I went down to Dunedin (new zealand), and saw them play in 1980 in the Regent Theatre. There were about 500 drunk students, it was raining, it was the ideal way to start one of the best decades ever in music, the 1980s
I wish I was alive back then god I would've loved going to their shows and concerts, apparently soon they might have their last show according to fans and I've never seen them once..
Robert's voice in All Cats Are Grey is so mysterious and dreamlike....its like memories of lost times. So strange. Forever is so psychedelic. One of my favorite The Cure songs in all of its manifestations.
Nice listening this radio , what a great life to mister Peel witnessing the History of British music . He saw the cream of this time . Vibracobra23 you made my day .
He brought us many great performances from so many talented artists. John Peel had great taste, and the recordings live on as a testament! Sadly missed...
Yeah just heard this, I love how random shit just pops up on youtube. I spent a bunch of years looking for green vinyl rarities and all kinds of shit in record stores, and am somewhat nostalgic of the time when you'd just *find* songs out of the blue on b sides and stuff, so this is like a goldmine, yet another rendition of what we know, but presented differently; I really love these alt lyrics versions sometimes; there's a great version of Charlotte Sometimes out there somewhere that sounds amazing. Thanks for uploading this. Lovely stuff.
The lyrics of The Holy Hour and Primary are not yet definitive here. Here is Primary : Red in the Christmas tree shines And you lick your sticky lips Never mind I'll stare In love Yellow, such a happy colour But I feel so old Girl sits in a room drawing pictures Oh yellow yellow yellow yellow That's so cold Oh, oh remember Please don't change Blue is waiting for your brother You won't get seen again Sky high waves you and other colours Primary sound and primary fine Oh, oh remember Please don't change
I’m a massive fan of this era of The Cure, but I’ll be honest… I never really cared much for “Primary”. I never understood the appeal, or why it was pushed as a single. However, this version of it is a whole different deal. I like this so much more. Better lyrics, better execution, better overall sound. Too bad this wasn’t the version on Faith.
I love "Primary" but prefer the original. All Skids Peel sessions are now on CD - 6 CD boxed set "Skids - The Virgin Years" - and for £20 max. Maybe The Cure's will be released too ?
Anyone know where that portrait of the band is from? Is it Paris? A photographer called Gervaise something or other?...shame on me for not remembering, but. you know, it's been a long time...
The Peel sessions are a treasure, a true part of music history. And those early The Cure live were incredible. Thank for sharing mate !
*now we're all Cured*

4o years
1981=21 for me and I am also still linstening to listening to their music.

All Cats Are Grey in this version is sooo beautiful, excellent and simple super!!!

Thanks so much for including Peel's intro. What an icon.
John Peel and Bob Harris.
John Peel changed lives forever..
Hell yeah. Mr Peel gave so many artists a break when they were starting out.

Cool songs. Thank you for post this, a hug. 🙂🖤
Incredible. I will love The Cure forever.
my fav cure period
So cool to hear these songs still in their Demo form such a great band.

John Peel is like an alternative music Genie granting all those wishes and all.
Great, great simile there, Markil

Check out Mixcloud as well for lots of gems like this.
My favorite part of these Peel Sessions is hearing Peel's on-air voice intro-ing and outro-ing the songs or announcing long ago gig dates
It's an amazing glimpse of how things were in those days...
Yes, it makes a difference.
All my peel stuff is on tape, including this, and I have no tape player now!
The cure and roberts, toute mon enfance, indémodable inimitable, the must off music !¡!
The Cure is my Cure
Incredible recording. Of incredible songs.
Delightful. Exquisito. Thank John Peel: FOREVER.
how and useful work made John Peel. Thx by him many bands could went out and become famous. I like this different version of primary
Ohhhhh the bass! I could just listen to Simon playing bass
Thanks for share this! All Cats are grey it makes me dream
Perfect Cure and good to hear John Peel
Love that drum sound
excellent.....I always say All Cats are Grey to my grey kitty Dusty 💚💙💛💜
I like grey pussies too (feline ones, obviously..)
My daughter has just started listening to Robert and his Cure only 40 years too late📻💿
Better late than never
Whaddya mean too late? They sound the exact same and still play 3 hour sold out shows!
Thanks Paul

so nice to hear John peels voice thankyou
dank je wel
magnificent!!
"In Orange" is the best video of the Cure ever made, Ripping Corpse!!
All cats, Holy..are magic. All by Cure is soo fuck good.
Interesting to hear these songs in their development.
Great session. I think I love 'Forever'
Amazing.....LOV'YA!!!! HOLY HOUR 😍🖤
thanX... c'est magique
Amazing - so far ahead of everything at that time....
“Everything”? I dunno man. In ‘81 there was a *LOT* of exciting and innovative stuff happening. That’s a pretty heavy statement.
Oh remember
Please don't change...
Le sessioni di John Peel, sono sempre dico sempre state all'altezza della loro fama.
Oh god. That version of Primary is amazing.
Fantastic!
the new single, of course
Блин, вот никогда не перестану поражаться, насколько Роберт был красивым тогда!
Estoy con unos auriculares medio pelo, y se escucha de la pura madre! Que grande Johnny!
my fav band,.,.#1
Holy Hour best version!
I prefer the one from Amsterdam Jaap Edenhal 17 10 1980
it's not 'best'... it is just a nice version. It's not sports.
With John in it. YESSSSSS
This primary and "in orange" ver are much better than the final ver that was put on the album.
no way, primary sounds too bland and does not even contain the awesome chorus like in album version..
I appreciate hearing a diff version after listening to LP version elenventee-billion times :-7
When I was young
Yellow, such a happy colour!
love THE CURE....
Glad they ditched the original lyrics to primary! The final ones are much better
yeelloooh
Shoulda found a way to get sticky lips in the final version, though. A prophecy of the Let's Go To Bed era?
Work in Progress...listen and learn...
@@gaevlebocken ... such a happy colour :)

AMAZING QUALITY 1980 ??????????????
Yes, the boffins at the BBC certainly knew what they were doing.

The lyrics of The Holy Hour and Primary are not yet definitive here. Here is Primary :
Red in the Christmas tree shines
And you lick your sticky lips
Never mind
I'll stare
In love
Yellow, such a happy colour

Oh, oh remember
Please don't change
Blue is waiting for your brother
You won't get seen again
Sky high waves you
and other colours
Primary sound and primary fine
Oh, oh remember
Please don't change
I like both of these versions of those songs a lot more than the album versions. Peel had a real knack for one-upping the official releases.
I have a dubbed bootleg cassette of this session, Primary is listed as "Cold Colours"?
This is my birthday date I was 17 that day waouh!!!!!!!!
I was 1 day old
very good
Primary Primary > Secondary Primary
Love this,
but the first track is called cold colours right? Primary is completely different song
It was specifically called Primary for this session at the time of recording on 7th January 1981.
oh my good god robert’s voice is beautiful in All Cats Are Grey what
Wow.
Oh, Fuschia!
Sublime - the best band ever.
Idk, The Cure’s up there too

Robert Smith is a god.....

WHO GOTS THE CAREER GUTS TO BE THE NEXT JOHN PEEL?
Here we all are, waiting upon your arrival..... :S
The bigger Robert Smith's hair became the greater his vocal range became. Something sinister going on...?
Well, you know how Mama Cass got hit on the head and her voice got better...light socket situation=same result?

Wow, “Holy Hour” is also much better here, though I actually love the official version of that one. Still, this version is significantly better.
The Cure utilise the flanger pedal.
Claude Gassian, I think...possibly...all hail...

I really prefer this version, a lot more harmonious and warm than the album one.
