  • Noe the G here ... aka Noe Gold, founding editor of Guitar World. I made this UA-cam teaser for the incredible "Roy Buchanan Telly Talk" DVD, a full-on master class session with the master of the Telecaster. Please share it with anyone who loves blues guitar music with a jazz finesse feel. ...
See, the thing is, by just watching on youtube, you are only getting a fraction of this timeless memento of a genius who will never play again. That is not why I put it up here.
Remember, this is a teaser, containing a fraction of the original footage on the DVD it is meant to promote. To get the full-scope, full-sound, complete experience, buy the DVD!

Marty Scorsese told me in my interview with him for The Hollywood Reporter

... about choosing Roy Buchanan's rendition of "Sweet Dreams" for the soundtrack of "The Departed": " 'Sweet Dreams' is like a theme that goes through the picture. The downbeat in the beginning of the song, the way Buchanan plays it, is so melancholy and so powerful that I thought, here's a perfect place for it, at the end of this movie -- so I put it there."

Roy was one of those guys where if you listened to him play for 100 hours, you'd still walk away with the idea that he hadn't even begun to scratch the surface of what he really knows.
(and you'd probably still want to hear more.)
I love people who run this deep, no matter what they do, and it's a damn shame that there aren't more of them.

Born on this day in 1939
    Roy Buchanan, of blessed memory:
Roy Buchanan (September 23, 1939 - August 14, 1988), an American guitarist and blues musician, was a pioneer of the Telecaster sound. Despite never having achieved stardom, he is still considered a highly influential guitar player. Ranked #57 on the Rolling Stone list "100 Greatest Guitarists of all Time," Guitar Player praised him as having one of the "50 Greatest Tones of all Time."

Still going strong! 22,000 hits and counting. Here's a comment from a Friend Of Roy in Norway:
    Roy Buchanan: Telly Talk
I just received my copy of the Telly Talk DVD from Noë Gold, founding editor of Guitar World.
It is a filmed interview session with Roy from 1982, where he explains his playing style, and shows his techniques on one of the most iconic Teles ever, Nancy.
This 30 min. DVD is a must for all Roy fans - actually for all fans of vintage Teles! Maybe also for those who normally don't "get" Roy ...
Thanks to Noë Gold and John Peden (photographer) for making it, and to Bob Davis for making me aware of it.
… Roy also speaks about Teles in general, and how the old (early 50's) Telecasters had a better cut nut which made the open C-chord more comfortable ..... On a "modern" Tele he found that he had a tendency to mute the high E-string with his forefinger while playing the open C.
I wonder if the '52 RI has the period correct string spacing ..... ?

im 60 .. to me .. even tho as he himself said " there are no number 1's " ... he is a number 1 ... thefirst master of the telecaster .. alone on road at 13 ... he knew more than most forget .. they all came to hear him play , he was the mentor and inventor for many that followed , unknown to most but known to those that know true talent ... ahead of his time .. taken to soon .. just like our other lost magician SRV .. both lost in that few yrs ... RIP Roy .... & srv ... we will continue letting the youngsters know who you are and will keep passing on the magic you gave us ...thank you ROY and SRV ..

Marty Scorsese told me last summer ...
in my interview with him for The Hollywood Reporter ... about choosing Roy Buchanan's rendition of "Sweet Dreams" for the soundtrack of his Oscar-winning movie "The Departed": " 'Sweet Dreams' is like a theme that goes through the picture. The downbeat in the beginning of the song, the way Buchanan plays it, is so melancholy and so powerful that I thought, here's a perfect place for it, at the end of this movie -- so I put it there."
