"IMAGINE" follows the story of Millie, a little girl who dreams of being a dancer, yet suffers from Niemann Pick Type C; an extremely rare, incurable disease which causes neurological decline and dementia. Only 800 people around the world suffer from this, the majority of whom are innocent children who were born with this horrible genetic condition.
17 YEAR OLD FILM-MAKER RELEASES CAPTIVATING SHORT FILM TO BUILD AWARENESS OF RARE FATAL GENETIC DISEASE
First, Carl Mason learnt that his nine year old neighbour suffers from Niemann Pick Type C, then he raised £6000 to produce a full-scale short film to help increase awareness of the extremely rare disease. The young film-maker secured collaborative support from over 20 television and film professionals to create a film that could aid fundraising efforts and also raise medical awareness of NP-C.
The screenplay was written by John F. McDonald, a multi-award winning screenwriter, with the careful guidance of NP-C charity Hope for Hollie, Niemann Pick UK, INPDA and Great Ormond Street Hospital. What is also particularly impressive is that this teenager secured a production team including camera, audio, editing, costume and make-up professionals who all work full-time in the film industry with diverse experience ranging from ITV's Broadchurch, Doctor Who, Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz, Channel 4 Drama, BBC Worldwide and more. Carl said “Working with such a seasoned team has made my directing début particularly special. I very much hope that the film will inspire donations to the charities involved and increase awareness of this horrible disease within both the medical profession and public alike. Obviously it has been an extremely enjoyable project to work on, but the fact is, this is a fatal disease that barely anyone has ever heard of and I wanted to change that.”

+Awakening Dawn removed is the best short film ever
praying for all the children who are in any form of pain
@Rosida Andriyana too bad you've consumed them by the many.
Praying doesn’t work!

I want to applaud that 17-year old boy, Carl, for his very heartwarming and meaningful initiative in gathering a team to produce such a film, to raise awareness and help families dealing with this disease. It is a beautiful initiative. And the film is well-done.
wow wow wOW WOw WoW
Wow indeed ! Well done . I hope this is a tool for the cause and wish you much success !
this kinda makes me terrified to be a parent in the future......
me too. I also just watched a video about the pompe disease at school. which means recessive plus recessive means dominant. meaning that your genes have to do which your next generation.
sorry if that didn't make sense
ben smith don’t be, giving and raising another human life is an amazing gift. It’s no one fault these things happen, and it’s no reason not to allow your family to have the joy of being a family. I hope one day you have healthy and happy kids, you and anyone reading this, if that’s your dream :)
Meh, I don't wanna be a parent anyway :/
me too :(
my brother suffers from NP-C. this short film had me in tears because this is what's going to happen to him - well most of its happened already - thank you for making this video
Many thanks for your comment. I am so sorry to hear that. Let's hope IMAGINE continues to raise awareness of Niemann Pick Type C, and the families such as yourself, affected by this horrible condition!
Elise the Lucian thank you so much, god bless you too, it's not very often someone will say that to me and your comment has brought tears to my eyes. thank you so much you wonderful person, you've made my day
Elise the Lucian you can ask anything
Elise the Lucian I guess just to pray that we make it through each day. I do this every night but I hope that your prayers help too
Kyleesha Chamberlain I really hope your brother is still okay. Just be sure of be making him smile as much as you can. ❤
A smile is something that you and him are going to be thankful forever.
This really hurt.
The last sentence hit me with The Feels™ like a train.
Malarim Enar me too
Malarim Enar Right
Malarim Enar feels bad man
Pepe
I don't get it
I wish the parents won't blame the doctors when he's just trying to do his job. I also know the parents know the doctor's trying to help the kid, but they just can't help it when the world is being unfair. Life and death are something we must face sooner or later, it's just hard to accept it; no matter who there's always a time when death cannot be accepted by them.
GamerSky haha hey i have some short films on my channel that i worked really hard on if you want would you go check them out? (: THNAKS!
Sure, That'd be awesome :)
death doesn't discriminate between the sinners and the saints. It takes and it takes and it takes.

Wow! Imagine has just reached 100,000 views on UA-cam. I am so happy that the film has helped raise awareness of Niemann-Pick Type C, and I hope it continues to do so long into the future. Many thanks for liking and sharing!
+Carl Mason Thanks for Turkish Subtitle :)
A disease of 100 cases worldwide? You can take more common but terrible disease- Type 1 Diabetes.
+Carl Mason Deserved, wow, what a well written film. The actors, the filming, the editing. And the end, was such satisfying hit in the stomach!
+Nemo sunk my Nautilus Like no one knows about diabetes, and they have to resort to UA-cam to tell their story. It is a debilitating disease, but here are industries to help diabetics. They are not children dying is obscurity. You are the type of person who sees a child dying and says to the surrounding crowd what about me.
+Carl Mason A very sad film, but if I had not seen this film, I would never of heard of Niemann-Pick Type C, because it is so rare. It portrayed the pain and suffering and feeling of despair the parents must have felt to know their child has this condition and that they will have to watch their child deteriorate. I thought the meaning was very clear and I hope you achieve your aim of spreading awareness of such a horrible condition.
Appreciate every day that your kids are ok. There's so much pain out there we don't see.
No.. I'm not crying.... there's a ninja chopping onions in front of my face....
TT^TT
Good one... I think that's what happened here too... Just the usual, you know... A ninja, chopping unions in front of me...
SAME(╥_╥)
+Dancinghufflepuff Call me Cas HELLO FELLOW HUFFLEPUFF **tips fedora**
I'm laughing at this while bawling- just that ninja, you know!
StupidMaskyDances “your not crying . Your laughing . It’s a strange kinda laugh”
I've never heard of this disease until I saw this short film. It's very sad to think that this little never had that chance to live her life :(
I've watched this a million times and I still sob at the end
ohhh 6.5k views overall
Never believe in numbers XD and she may have downloaded this vedio then watched it million times XD
P.S. i sobed too
+Criza chu Or she just exaggerated?
Yikes Noor haha hey i have some short films on my channel that i worked really hard on if you want would you go check them out? (: THNAKS!
great
No... definitely not crying... I'm just.. washing out my eyes...
Same
i didnt understand can someone explain to me?? thanks😉
+Kristy Mayonesera lol. You know when people try to deny the fact they were crying really hard? Yeah. I turned into a babbling mess watching this video
Oh thank you but i was talking about that i didnt understand what the vid was about💕
+Kristy Mayonesera ooo. Sorry. Would you like me to explain the video then?
"I will always be ten years old'
Me: She FUCKING DIED. She FUCKING DIED.
I understand
oh i thought it was because the tumor in her belly was affecting her thoughts
+Sushi subbed me too :'(
+Sushi subedi Isn't she went to the heaven?
Rebeka Polyák what
Imagine is now available in Spanish, German, Polish & French! More translations coming soon.
***** This is the only short film that made me cry. This is truly touching, and it made me really want to help. You just earned a subscriber.
Thanks for Polish translate!
Cudowny film! ♡
german yay ☺
what about Arabic language?
could you please give me the Link of the spanish version?
This is AWESOME! I was forcing myself not to cry, but then when she said that she'll always be 10 years old, I burst into tears! Ugh! But I loved it!
I saw your short film through my filmmakers project app and I'm so glad I did. This lead me to searching your short on youtube just so I can congratulate you on a job well done, so congratulations sir thank you for making this moving film and thank you for raising awareness for a disease not many people including myself have heard of.
Vincent Espinoza Great to hear Vincent. Thanks for taking the time to find the film and letting me know your thoughts, I really do appreciate it!
+Carl Mason this is awesome it feels good that people make things like this
+Vincent Espinoza what is the app called?
FunnyVsTV its called "the filmmakers project" its available on android idk about iPhones you gotta check.
Thank you Carl. This was very moving as I lost my sister four years ago to Niemann Pick Type C. She was 27.
You are WORTH IT 😊!!! I am so sorry for your loss😢. Stay strong😊💪
I'm from Costa Rica. My cousin was a very healthy kid, until he got strangely sick at 6. It took around 6 more years to have a Niemann-Pick diagnosis. I was away for a while and we had the chance to say good bye. But when I saw him again, five years later, he couldn't even stare at me. I couldn't believe it, it was so difficult to accept. I was scared of saying hello to him everytime I went into his room and he would cry everytime. One night, they had to take him to the hospital and he died next morning. He was 14 years old, but for me he will always be 6. In Costa Rica there are around 20 kids with Niemann-Pick in the Hospital Nacional de Niños, but so far I couldn't find a group or organization giving support for the families. Still, I'm sure your work is helping to cause impact on people, thanks for caring about the relevance of this subject.
I know that this is a movie and they are acting but , god damn the doctor is killing me with his smile ! why he keeps smiling when He talks ! he doesn't know how to act !
+Omer Alazawy agreed! but great short film!
yeah this doctors smile is really pissing me off
+Omer Alazawy Don't blame the Doctors. But you can blame the pharmaceutical companies who only care about profits, not about cures. Curing cancer and rare diseases? Pfft. That would put a huge hole in their budget...
yeah i dont like the parents acting as well
my first thought when I first lay eyes on him. Where's your compassion?! -.-
it doesn't matter if your running, walking, or crawling as long as you never stop moving
After having lost a son this tore into my heart....brought chills n tears...beautifully done.
This tells the story of every person who has ever suffered from this disease. It's the story of my Gavin's life. He will forever be 7 years old. Thanks for sharing.
I’m Kadens mom. We are Facebook friends. My son is Kaden
Only an amazing person could've made such a beautiful and moving film! I started making short films at 17, too, and you just made me wish that I could go back and make better films at that age. You've got a very promising future if you keep working hard, Carl!
Thank you so much for your kind words, I really do appreciate it. Just looking forward to starting the next project :)
when i first watch this, i was thinking "no way thats a real disease" and then at the end it shows footages of children who is suffering from this disease and i start reading the description and the comment. good job, you are accomplishing your intention in making this short film.
This world is cruel but beautiful.
SonGokuThePure hey i have some short films on my channel that i worked really hard on if you want would you go check them out? (: THNAKS!
It's not the world it's the people in this world that make it cruel. 😭❤️
Beautifully cruel 💔
Why neurology is so undiscovered compared to other fields. Sometimes doctors cant diagnose disease and gives the wrong treatment to the patient, which makes his condition worse. Thanks to videos, short films like this which develops awareness.
one if the best short films on UA-cam.
The mother looks like spencer off pretty little liars ... Lol
RIGHT?!
+Alura Sears omg that's true, I was wondering where have I seen her before! she looks just like her!!
true
Thank you! I thought I'm insane
This is so touching I love it. My cousin had this. He died and it was horrible.
Honestly this is amazing. Where in England is it made?
Im so sorry for you..
Jemma Smith I'm so sorry for your loss
I am sorry for your loss😢 you are WORTH IT!!!😊😊
Stay strong 😊💪
if your child is going through something like that you need to be supportive of them and you cant break down crying and be all depressed everytime your around them.
Easier said than done
Am i the only one here that immidiately do a research about this disease? Pffftt why did i always do this....
same here I looked it up and I had no idea what the sentence said
I did too.
"Hello, my name is Milly. I'm ten years old. I'll always be 10 years old..."
This film is amazing. I've never felt so emotional watching a film. Thank you :)
when she said that she'll always be ten years old did it mean that she died? great story and film by the way xx
yup
Cienna Schiffler so she died at 10 right?
+Crazy payne.x I didn't get it. She was ten years old in every scene except the first one, but then she said years had passed. The film really doesn't explain much about the disease at all, just that she had seizures, wobbly legs, and trouble talking. Why/how did she die? Very confused.
+Ivy B Definitely interesting to see how the film is clear to some and not to others. The idea was that the narration was told from after she had passed as she reflects and tells the story of each scene hence why she is ten years old throughout. This could have been clearer. And this is down to personal preference of course, but we were not exactly trying to explain about the disease in detail, we were in fact trying to do the opposite - the purpose is to make general audiences and consumers aware that such a disease exists and affects families; therefore encouraging audiences to read more into the disease and its charities. Simply trying to engage this "entertainment" medium to captivate audiences.
+Ivy B i think it gives us more insight about how does it feel to have the disease, instead of explaining the biological bit
this movie is great it's a mixer between the fast and furious and the avengers 2 and sends a strong message about organic farming and bullying ufc fighters
+DDT0030 Very interesting.
DDT0030 wut

Read Ending Aging
What an amazing film! I love how you're spreading awareness of this terrible disease. Awareness is always a good thing. Again, I loved this film, it's emotionally moving and the aesthetic is very good too.
Maisy Nixon's in my class but this movie relates to my friends disease who died 2 years ago thank you for for making this👏
I couldn't hold back the tears. That said, this movie does an outstanding job of raising awareness of this disease. Thank you so much, once again, for producing this work of art.
this was fantastic, and although the writing and acting was off at times, this was phenomenal. great work
Sam O' Browne Many thanks for your comment :)
The. Parents whose have normal kids should be very grateful and appreciate what they have in their hands.my minds and heart goes to the families which they have kids like Millie
She didn't die you know! That's why she said "I'll always be 10 years old" in the last part of the film because her disease' caused it. Remember when she said, she's cant do the things she used to do like how she sings, and danced when she was still a little kid because she is struggling to remember the words, that means her brain is continually losing the capability to memorize and even remember! That's why she said that she will always be 10 years old even though she's really not. My own opinion :) Please respect...
Who on this planet would not shed a tear........(???)
I'm not crying, I'm sweating from my eyes
I cried a lot on watching this film... being a mom I know how awful it is when your baby is ill but I cannot imagine how it feels to see your child slowly dying through the years... Thanx for the film... I'll now appreciate each second still more
I really like filmmakers like you who create films to spread awareness of an issue. Though I think your film is great, there are some bits that could improve, otherwise nice job.
Patrick Nan Thank you - really appreciate it :)
if I have to say one line for this short film, I would say "its the most wonderful short film I have ever seen." the dancing scene was force to make me cry. great
jesus as soon as i crossed the emo short film threshold its just been one depressing flick after the next
omg :D
shannon campbell haha hey i have some short films on my channel that i worked really hard on if you want would you go check them out? (: THNAKS!
Maximus Prime lol fo sho!
Through out the end stance sequence all i could think was of her growing up and achieving great things, falling in love, getting married, having children, growing old. All things she never got to experience, the world is cruel.
Having watched my son slowly die from the age of two until NPC finally won aged 11. This needs sharing !!!!
Thank you for the comment. I am so sorry to hear that. Let's hope this film continues to engage the general public as it has been doing effectively thus far, in order to raise awareness of this horrible condition.
Jeez, I’m sorry that happened, hope ur doing okay
Wow, I literally have chills right now.
This was such a touching film, and it goes to show that you should be thankful for what you're blessed with.
the ending when she said she would always be 10 years old got me :(
I know I cried so much 😓
Awesome short film. I rarely get emotional, but this short film truly makes you think of such heartbreaking trials people have to go through in life. It's not fair. People should not have to feel this way, people should be able to live a full life. I wish I could help cure diseases and such like this but I knew it is incredibly hard or impossible. Thank you again for this short film, truly one of the best short films on UA-cam.
I'm 17, and have a small production company in the US. I've made several TV commercials, weddings, corporate promos, but haven't had much time with both school and basically a full time job to make short films like this. I just have to make time! How long did it take from pre-production to post-production to create this beautiful piece?
Ethan Swords Many thanks for your comments :) Altogether as this was a side project alongside school work and other projects, it took 5 months from pre-to-post production!
Wow, that's seriously impressive! This is such a beautiful work of art. Congratulations on such a feat.
Beautiful parents, beautiful child... this film breaks my heart... how this could happen to a seemingly perfect family.
IT'S JUST SO SAD OMG😭😭😭😭😭
Irisa H hey i have some short films on my channel that i worked really hard on if you want would you go check them out? (: THNAKS!
+Maximus Prime can you seriously stop advertising about your channel you should go pay for ads or something rather than spaming about your films. Maybe your channel is truly good and you work very hard and well but that doesn't mean you should advertise about yourself on another person's hard work video.
Cute Pony Spam is a food -_-
That last line is extremely powerful - love it. Very well done.
does the last words of this video, " ill always be 10 years old" mean she died?!
OH
+Wolfclaw991 She didn't actually die, this is a short film fictional shes in my class not actually dead xD
R4 Lucky I know that.
aha
+Wolfclaw991 Yes that's why she closed her eyes and was dancing, meaning she went to a better place where she can be happy and do the things she couldn't.
I have a daughter too, she is quite normal.
But while watching this film, I still burst out tears.
God bless !
Tears.. so very close to home..
Amazing work, friend. I'm 17 years too but I applaud your efforts into making this wonderful short !
vishnu venugopal Thanks so much for your comment!
Great Film. I am a biophysicist in training. I know a lot about genetics, biochem and HOW to figure things out using simulations and laws of physics. Movies like this inspire future scientist like me on WHAT it is worth working on and why I spend so much energy and time today on studying for really hard exams. I have never heard of NP-C but it is on my "stuff worth researching" list now and I might tell others...and who knows what that will lead to.
So a small heads up on the state of the art of genetic diseases in general: There is an enzyme called CRISPR/CAS9 which can be used as a technology to edit DNA to our will like we can edit a text file on a computer (oversimplified) - maybe even in living humans, but this to my knowledge has never been done as of April 2016. It is highly controversial of course, people are even suspicious of genetically modified food and rightfully so. We need to understand and address the abuse potential of such a technology, so we as a society cannot rush. But if we understand which enzymes failed and why and what we need to change in the genetic material to fix it there might be a cure out there for diseases like this. The problem HOW to change a genetic sequence in humans might be solved in a decade or two, but to which concrete sequence we want to change the genetic code into that it will cure something is a big challenge remaining.
This is really eye opening. I love that there's still a side to youtube that spreads messages like these.
Knowing someone who's had this disease, and passed away from it, I can relate.
Congratulation Carl Mason! Awesome story telling, touching and great photography ;)
Marco Zappalà Thanks so much Marco for letting me know your thought - good to hear!
that last line hit me like a tonne of bricks
poor kid....this movie touched me. i know people who are in need and it troubles me that I can't help them.
i hate comments like this but i need some criticism in order to get better...i recently uploaded a new short film and would really appreciate comments in order to help me improve! thank you!
Why will she always be 10 years old ?
Because she is not going to live past ten years old
ナツルシ She died when she was 10 so she could not pass that age.
Oh ... Thanks for telling me
your welcome
+SprinkleOfAkwardness x did she really die? because she told she is 10 years old every time there was a new scene, and she also said that as years went by it got harder to live, so I assumed she just stayed in the 10 year old mentality, because she looks like a 12 yo when she is in the bed.
Can’t stop crying. Saddest thing I’ve come across on UA-cam to date. God bless
that hit me in the heart
I sobbed through the whole film. The acting was magnificient. The father really came out as being a jerk; but I understood his reaction as being in pain. I have never heard of the disease. I hope you will contact some of the new online fundraising programs and post a link. Thank you for this film. And amazing job at fundraising and making the contacts for the creation of the film. I hope it wins lots of awards.
Great Film
i loved the way the story was conveyed and directed brilliant work by director- Carl Mason
Many thanks!
the last line gave me the chills. very nice job on this
them ninjas cutting onions again :(
Such a beautiful story. Everything is great, the writing, the actors, all of it tells a heart warming and heartbreaking tale.
THERE WAS A TARDIS
I SAW IT TOO
I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO SAW IT
NOO. WHOVIANS UNITED!
+Kathiii70 AHHHH
:'D
What a tragic tale! Thank you for making the film, this disease deserves recognition. Hopefully the more people that know about it the more people will contribute to research and help us to understand and maybe combat it!
TARDIS SPOTTED 1:40
+RandomBi I saw it too!!!
omg 😂
where?
i cant see it
Yeah. I was wondering if I was the only one who spotted it
|-/
I'm about 2/3 through, and my main thought is that her parents are only making it harder for her by lying to her. If she doesn't understand what's happening, it will be more frightening. If she knows what to expect, at least she can try to accept it. (And I think she would find a way to do so.)
What camera and lenses did you use? :)
FS700 and a bunch of Samyang primes
+CineBites samsung?
no, samyang
Omg I think the dance at the end was representing the phases that the heart goes through when a person is dying. That's so sad :,(
Brilliant film! I like everything especially the lighting!
todaywiththeCJB Many thanks, glad you enjoyed the piece!
This always gives me goosebumps Carl! Love this film and I love what you have done for Hope for Hollie and the NP-C community not just in this country but world wide! You truly have spread awareness in a way that no one has before you. Well done Carl and Lewis and I'm honoured to say that you two are my friends! Thank you for everything you've done but remember, none of this would have been possible without me! Much love buddy xx
I know maisy I got to the same place as her and I was in the video as one of the school girls
+born as megs which one
+Teeny Tiny Tubers I'm the blond girl in the school scene doing the hand shake
+Teeny Tiny Tubers in the green jacket
That's so sad:( it made me cry, I can't believe that people like Mille actually have to go through this they must be so strong to be able to fight this illness
Who else noticed the TARDIS in the first science in the classroom?
Scenes*
yep, you know it's British if doctor who is casually added instead of this big 'look how cool we are!!' like it's usually referenced in American films/TV
feetlicks (felix) doctor who is my favorite show 😂
Well done, and thank you for raising awareness of Niemann-Pick Type C.
Which cameras are used for this?
Sony FS700
when se said ''I will always be 10 years old'' my heart broke. instead of eyes, there was a waterfall of tears. there was a big hole inside me. everything felt hopeless. I can't breathe. I'll still be crying 15 years later when I think about this.
The last line hit me hard :'(
That was truly amazing. Sad, but amazing. The little girl was a better actress that most child actors in Hollywood. I have never heard of this disease until now, and it will stick with me because of this film.
The narration is kinda cheesy, and the dance is confusing because it doesn't match the music well but I love everything else in this film.
+Ylai Jah Thanks for your feedback - greatly appreciated
+Carl Mason I wouldn't say that the narration is cheesy. It drives the plot. The dialogue feels very forced to me though. The parent's don't feel very real and there is very little character development. I would've loved to see the girl actually change and the parents change. We never get a glimpse of the family before so it just feels like the parents are this negative static force. On top of this the major events in the film do not feel very carried out. I know it is a short film but either less needed to happen or something along those lines. Each event marks progression in her disease but it is not explained and it seems to just instantly move on to the next progression. How are these events impacting the family other than her mom being just as upset as she seemed before. There is no slow decline in the family. Since the girl IS a static character (her dialogue in the narrative doesn't change) we need the parents to be dynamic for her but they aren't. If the plot points had been better spaced and the parents had slowly decreased and we really saw that then the whole film as a whole would fit together better. Now that isn't to say the film itself is bad, the plot is excellent and that is what matters. But to clean it up I feel the character development of the mom and dad are very crucial, they were the real main characters in the film. They portrayed the emotion. Strong characters make great movies.
The dance at the end symbolised her death....she could dance again
That was so heart-touching that I can't stop my tears. Well done. May all the patients get well.
Wait... she... she died?
Mmhmm
+Rhys Green Hahaha sorry I was just asking someone else because I wasn't very sure ;P
+AnimeLuvr nahhh don't apologize. He should have watched the video before he decided to read the comments
SHUT UP MATE U WOULDNT LIKE IT IF I SAID 'SHE' WOULD YOU SO NO DONT SAY IT BACK MATE ILL BASH U
I remember when I was studying this disease for a medicine exam. It was a large group of severe metabolic disorders which I couldn't get into my brain being my last exam of the year. I can recall my friends and I complaining about learning this type of conditions ''we are never ever going to see this thing in the hospital'' ''It's a rare disorder why do we have to learn this'' ''Gosh, studying this is a waste of time''. Years passed ... and I came across this short film. Niemann-Pick is no longer a sphingolipidosis or a lysosomal storage disease for me. Not a bunch of signs, symptoms and causes recited by a 20-year-old version of myself. Now, is the face and story of this little girl. Although it's just a film, it made me realise that my approach of my career was not the correct one as a student and this really made me feel so embarrassed of myself.
