My god, how is it humanly possible for one man to not only to sing this song in the original key (hard enough), but then also play the guitar parts like Ritchie Blackmore? 😱 (Live and at the same time)... Respect ✊
Just ridiculously good. I honestly don’t think there is anyone else who can play this well and sing so brilliantly at the same time. He’s just an all round, rock star.
Playing at a really high level is one thing, but the whole thing becomes instantly better when you can see the guy enjoying himself and having so much fun.
Great voice and great and extension. however I am of the idea that as a second voice, as a timbre and as an interpretation, sambora was of another level.
Awesome guitar Awesome vocals. Love the fact it was one take and the little errors that made it real. Too much fake perfection on UA-cam these days. Kudos for a fantastic performance.
Wow, that first lead break! His take on the original is refreshing, and better. I just realized, after years of watching Phil, I think he is my favorite “rock star”! He has the looks, he has the chops, he has the voice, and he has the outrageous sense of humor. The total package.
I remember many years ago… having the privilege of being humbled by Phil jamming at Erindale Station in Mississauga, in the Banana Split days. He was unbelievable then and is a true guitar god and even gave me at the time an 18 punk a chance to play on stage with him at Web’s. You’re the best Phil
That Rick Beato interview is insane. The different styles that Phil plays during the interview to showcase various elements is incredible. Rick and the other interviewer are often seen with their mouths, laughing at how insane Phil's playing is. Go check it out!
Never gets old......People just know that Phil used to do this song over 30 years ago in his dad restaurant in Mississauga Ontario Canada and OMFG!!!!! Was like you have never seen before MAGIC!!!!!
The guys no short of amazing... I seen him play with Frozen ghost and Triumph back in the day.. and Lou if you're in contact with him there was this one bar band back in 87 I used to see come through when I was living in Sudbury I'm more than positive he was one of the guitar players... it was a band from Montreal I do believe called Strike Force.. they had the stage prop I almost want to say like a scorpions tribute...😎🤟 This mofo can really play that's for sure!!
This guy put as much into playing in his basement as he does playing MSG or Wembley in front of thousands of people! Here he’s covering the parts of Blackmore, Lord AND Gillan! Incredible! If he was born 10 years earlier he’d be a household name- Page, Eddie, Eric etc...
Went a snotty prep school growing up, and the senior class could post quotes along w their class pics. Most chose pretentious excerpts from poets & philosophers, presumably to broadcast how erudite, wise and insightful they were. Except for this one guy, who posted the complete lyrics to this song. One cool guy in the whole senior class, and he drove an old Shelby Cobra Mustang like McQueen in Bullitt. Big fat tires and everything. Kick ass cover, BTW. One of the best driving around in traffic w the radio as loud as it’ll go songs in history.
The king. He’s been playing this song for decades. He’s played the solos anything from the original to over the neck tapping to string skipping. Never plays it the same. Simply the best.
This reminds me of when I was 10, watching Phil shred Blue Suede Shoes in our buddy Andre's basement birthday party. Andre's Mom kept trying to get me dancing with the other kids, I was mesmerized even then and just watched this huge talent. True story.
Back in Mississauga Ontario Canada about 30 years ago we used to go watch him on jam nights at the Erindale Station ,and I always said this guy is going places. I loved watching him play then and still do. Phil your an incredible talent thanks for putting Mississauga on the rock and roll map,we're all so proud of you!
Triple threat! Gillan, Blackmore AND Lord! Love the alternate picking arpeggios on Jon's organ solo. Shit man, the whole thing is just straight-up awesome. Phil XXX!
Phil is by far the best of the best. Nobody can sing like Ian did in his 20's , play effortless like Richie did in his day and do it with a smile and with no effort. I wish I would have met Phil 20 years ago. God Bless you brother. You also have a wonderful bubbling personality. You remind me of a friend I had growing up. You deserve all the Happiness from life that life has to offer. You're Great !!!
I'VE SEEN OTHER BIG NAME MUSICIANS COVER HIGHWAY STAR, AND THEY DIDN'T COME CLOSE TO PHIL! YEAH BROTHER! THAT SOLO WAS RIPPIN! AND YOUR VOCALS KICKED ASS TOO! I'M MORE IMPRESSED EVERY TIME I WATCH YOU COVERING TUNES! ANYTHING YOU CAN'T PLAY OR SING?
Hands down my favorite rock star! Phil is the personification of all things that are the golden age of guitar rock - energy, talent and fun to watch. Thanks Phil for doing what you do!
Grew up in Mississauga and some him in his 20's. still the same hilarious ball of fire. I have worn a badge of pride for Phil for 30 years. Crazy talent, humble, hilarious and goes for it all of the time. Do you wonder why he gets call backs...
What I love about Phil.... he's "one of us" that actually made it. Even though you're playing the big stages with the biggest hair band of all time, you are STILL a rock and roll kid who plays in front of his mirror and imagines himself as the rock star he is in real life. We all live vicariously through you, my friend. Rock on with your bad self.
ua-cam.com/video/Ft1PxYS3oT0/v-deo.html "What we've got is a new song....and this is likely to remain our opening number for a year or so.".....yep it did! :D
Me: Wouldn't it be cool if Ritchie Blackmore jammed on some Deep Purple tunes on a live feed from his living room while in quarantine! Phil X: Hold my beer and while you're at it, tell Ian Gillan he's not needed here either!
I don't dare to imagine how many hours of practice you had in your life, but the result of all your efforts are just mind-blowing. What a performance and what a voice!!!! THANK YOU for sending this to the world.
I've played this tune about a thousand times and it never gets old, always rocks the roof off. Especially when performed with a gifted singer. Now Phil played this one as I expected he would on guitar. But to sing it that fucking good and play it? I have to give him great respect there. Awesome goatit Bro!
A hecking world class ROCKSTAR who're still able to play at small venues and chat with a crowd without asking gazillion pounds from working people!!! Cheers from Glasgow!!! Come back to the King Tut's, you are wanted here - well and alive! 🤘
Amazing. I give you 3rd best ever honors for your vocals. Ian Gillan's original vocal is first, followed by the still mind blowing Glen Hughes, who still performs this song easily at his age(almost 70). For your performance, however, you get a big 1st place for nailing the vocals and guitar both, even handling the organ solo. Good God you seem to have ALL the talent! Sick performance. Thank you so much!
Damn! Just Damn! Cant beleive he did all of those parts at once and his tone. You can tell that's all amp and guitar, guitar volume and his fingers. Just incredible!
Nooooo shit. I love the one-take, straight thru jam, in head phones. Just like trying to learn it as a kid. Your vocals were just as amazing as your picking, maybe more so like you say, doing them both together. Thanks for this.
Damn dude, how have I not seen this video before now (Sept 2023)??? That was epic! Up until now, I’ve always considered Chickenfoot’s live cover of this was the best with Joe Satriani tearing it up. But he didn’t sing, Sammy did. So for me, this take ranks right there next to Chickenfoot. Effing outstanding Phil 🤘🏻
Owned it....!! Who in their jealous minds disliked this video... Phil is the coolest man, I have not seen someone jam with that much enthusiasm in a long time. He was having FUN! The way it should be
Love to see you “fight in focus“ and succeed delivering this great track in one take singing and playing at the same time. This is true Rock 'n' Roll spirit and the opposite to all these fakers out there. Thank you for this stunning performance. You are an amazing singer, by the way.
I did that 42 years ago at school playing to the audience at school party... I did bass and lead vocal at Highway Star... My t-shirt was completely wet... I understand what it takes - the guy is GREAT! :)
It’s always great to see and hear musicians that not only know how to “just” play or sing others songs but fully OWN them with soul, feeling, attitude, presence......!!!!!!!PHIL YOU ARE WAY WAY UP THERE!!!!!! VERY INSPIRING, THX. Εύγε Πατριώτη, Να’σαι και να περνας πάντα καλά!!!!
Good, Holy, Schmoly! Give me a second while I pick my jaw off the freakin' ground! Ha! Smokin'!!! Vocals are top notch and you can play anything on the guitar!! Whoa! Has me yearning to pull out Machine Head and play it... Loud! Now, to pick out which air-guitar to play....
Love the transposition from Keyboard solo to Guitar as this was simply awesome. What makes you real guy is you know you’re a true professional musician when you realize you almost missed the bridge and we all do this at times, but only for a Millisecond With a quick smile of humanness and nearly flawless that a lot of people did not catch it while watching the video. I only point this out for the musicians that get down on themselves for missing a part as it can happen to anyone at any level of playing can miss but it’s how you recover that makes it beautiful Well done
Love that it's not perfect... and it's still miles past anyone else's take. Phil X is one of the best of the real rock 'n rollers, and the best in the business today in my humble opinion.
Wow! How on earth , in fact is Phil from earth? 🤔. Does he do that , phenomenal playing ,singing so well at same time , I can’t stop watching his fingers , his hands ,the speed and dexterity is something else . It’s not often I think a guitar neck actually needs to be about 12 inches longer 😄. Amazing talent . Bravo 👏👏👏👏👍
"Gee, what's he gonna do during the organ solo?"
How about blow our damn minds.
Actually I prefer this song without the organ solo
@@ruyjimenez4317 The organ solo is the most important part of that song for me but the guitar is a great substitute here.
@@silentzero7 ouu yeah ....
Yeah I agree. Satch does the same thing in Chickenfoot. Sounds awesome!!!
Yup
My god, how is it humanly possible for one man to not only to sing this song in the original key (hard enough), but then also play the guitar parts like Ritchie Blackmore? 😱 (Live and at the same time)... Respect ✊
And do the keyboard parts too😲❗️👍
Was this jammin with or jammin to? it's jammin to and a copy to a like a t, well done.
Nobody could scream like Ian Gillian. Not even Dio could do the proper scream.
Not bad for a 57 yrs old. The real deal.
@@joeysplats3209 Thank you
Wow! Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan and Jon Lord in one person.
i knooow, right! what planet is he from... ha! planet x, i guess
Indeed. Never listened to anyone do this and do so good.
Phil is a force of nature... plus he's clearly fun
to work - everyone wants to hire him :)
btw. there is no way that Blackmore could play on guitar that Organ solo like this guy did. Not back then, not now.
...and Glenn Hughes too! 😳
Just ridiculously good. I honestly don’t think there is anyone else who can play this well and sing so brilliantly at the same time. He’s just an all round, rock star.
Best guitar player alive!
Playing at a really high level is one thing, but the whole thing becomes instantly better when you can see the guy enjoying himself and having so much fun.
THIS! It's so easy to see Phil loves doing this and it's hard not to enjoy this.
And singing.
George Lucas Yes. Singing as well. Thanks George.
He’s brilliant.
Phil is such a badass! That "keyboard" solo with the arpeggios was super clean and killer! He nails the vocal too!
That's the best cover of ANYTHING I have ever heard.
wildfisher WORD! 👊🏻
A lot of Phil X covers are kinda mind bogglingly amazing. The guitar solo in this is just stupid hard.
Chickenfoot did a great version too.
I enjoyed that.
When Phil played John lord solo was amazing!!!! Just wow!!! Great musician amazing performance.
Sidenote: no ones mentioning how amazing your VOICE is!! Damn dudeee killer
Agree! How many people can play like this and sing like this?
Great voice and great and extension. however I am of the idea that as a second voice, as a timbre and as an interpretation, sambora was of another level.
@@AndyDion maybe John Sykes - but there are really a few ones.
@@skyscraper7474 I don't think that Sambora has PhilX's upper vocal range though

I have watched this at least 100 times! that smirk when he knows he just crushed that solo
Awesome guitar Awesome vocals. Love the fact it was one take and the little errors that made it real. Too much fake perfection on UA-cam these days.
Kudos for a fantastic performance.
That “organ” solo though… that was crazy
I'd love to see the guitar skills of those who thumbed this down..
It's Blackmore and his pack. 😁
I'm sure they're jazz snobs
Probably relating to the misleading title
it's at exactly 69 tho lol
Exactly. They're purists or idiots. Either way.
