Samuel Cole Because everyone wants the super player like Geddy Lee. When what Michael is, is an amazing rhythm Bass player. Super solid and in the pocket and that to me is more important and more impressive. With him back there, you never need a second guitarist because he can hold down that rhythm all day, every day. Then on top of it, his backing vocals and harmonizing are second to none. Great all around bandmate and player.
Being a male of a certain age group and being brought up with Deep Purple being one of my favourite bands, I have to say, this is brilliant! Superb musicianship and great talent!
When you sit back and actually listen to these guys.... No one in the band looks at anyone else because they all KNOW that they are all there in the pocket on every song they play. The trust is there and something magical always emerges. Joe KNEW Mike was gonna be there, Mike KNEW that Chad was there... Like I said, magical. These 4 could play anything!
Satriani is just absolutely amazing and a big shout out to Chad Smith on drums. I am in my late 60s and saw Deep Purple (whom I loved) perform this song live and honestly this is better and that takes some doing.
No guitarist is going to sound better playing Highway Star than Richie Blackmore. On top of that the organ part was either under mixed or missing entirely.
Paul Johnson I think it’s because Satriani never really wrote legendary songs like bands of purples caliber and of course sabbath and zeppelin just to name a few even though he has great songs and is a great guitarist.its a shame but people who know music know how great he is.
Yes he was when Blackmore quit mid tour In 93.. satch was asked to finish the tour and then asked him to join the band but he declined unfortunately..would have been interesting.
Band I worked for had the good fortune to support Deep Purple back in 1994 on a European tour so could see Joe first hand every night. Bloody excellent guitarist :)
Well a singer can keep a good voice their entire life if they take care of it. They usually ruin it by screaming and smoking. If a singer does not do these things, they can keep their voice sounding good until their last day usually. If they learn how to powersing, like the opera guys, etc, which is not screaming.
Hands DOWN!!! The best and baddast ass version i have ever heard. Been to at least 100 shows or more. SAMMIE..MICHAEL..JOE....N CHAD..KEEP ROCKING GUYS YOU GUYS KILLED IT N NEVER STOP!!
Even BAD covers of this song set your hair on fire, and this is a SCREAMING cover. Holy crap, Sammy singing the harmonies to the guitar solo, Mikey doing the old Gillian scream. Holy fook this melted my brain.
Yeah HR, it's great to see stars like this having fun playing other people's music and kicking ass while doing it. Who knew Will Farrell was that good on drums? Yes, i know it's not Will!
10-2022. I'm back and having listened to Deep purple's version AGAIN...., I STILL HAVE TO SAY this version ROCKS!. Satriani's extemporainious Guitar and Organ solos are innventive and delightful, Sammy Hagar has a great energetic vocal range that really shines on this song and of course, there is that chicken masks he wears at the end of the song that kicks it even further. True Highway stars!
At 62 years of age, I must say, this is one of the BEST live performances I have ever seen. Joe was rocking that guitar! Many might remember, in the 70's, this song had an organ in it. Joe brought it in his guitar.! Sammy and Michael wailed on this like nobody's business. The band was tight and the audience was rocking! "I gave it a 10 because it had a good beat and was easy to dance to..." :-)
well I hdon't know about that...Metal Church w the late great David Wayne was probably thek best cover of Hwy Star....youd have to take a ride on the way back machine for that version.... early 80s
These guys KILL this man! Im an old timer and Joe's playing on this and the keyboard parts, not to mention Mike's and Sammy's vocals, and his bass playing. Did I say anything about the heartbeat of Chad? DAMN! Killing it!
I watched this 20 times when it came out and now it's the end of July 2020 and I just watched it 20 more times. This just a few things how great Deep Purple was as a band, the recreation Chickenfoot does, with the harmony screaming of Sammy and Michael the drumming and of course the virtuoso playings of Joe Satriani. What a great band I hope they tour again after this F**D UP Pandemic is over with! Chickenfoot forever!
The fear- based life structure isnt going to be over.. its too good a control mechanism over lambs that are fearful of others who ask questions, and dont follow half- truths and omissions. Yes this music rocks. And btw, no live concert attendance unless you have a QR code Vax certification on your phone.
This is what it looks like when you've come full circle. You start life as a musician, working hard to make money doing something you love, then you eventually end up with the money, and go back to focusing on the thing you actually love, making music and having fun doing it. These guys have all had the lime-light at some point, and they all still do, but they are at a stage in life where this magic moment in time to just take what they want, and sing it, tribute songs, cover songs, new songs, is finally fun again, and they don't have to care if it's a number 1 hit, or if it makes them a ton of money so they can pull off the next project or tour, etc. Music that is this much fun, thank God for that! I love it! Keep on rockin' you guys, always!
Myron Ens I like your perspective, these old Rockers are still doing what they love. Maybe one big difference now versus when they started out, that makes it more enjoyable, is they have roadies to load/unload all their gear before and after shows!! Carrying all that heavy equipment can take the fun out of anything.. :-)
Dude you completely summed up what every true rocker (I'm a guitar player singer) knows. Not all of them do it for the love of the magic. These guys do. Billy squire said, Let the magic of the moment say it all to me...
I am a drummer myself, and this, to me is what music is all about. I am not the greatest drummer out there, have lots to learn yet, but making music, and having fun doing it just feels right. And I think anyone doing the same knows when that mix and groove are there. When it's fun, who cares about how good you sound, or if you make a mistake. Just having fun. But seeing these guys, just wow. I love it!
Good GOD !!!! Few know the actual depth of talent that Hagar presents on guitar to begin with, Ronnie Montrose aside..(.btw...I was at Montrose's first concert ...in the world...at Washington Square Park in North Beach at their debut..)..but now Hagar has put together this absolute CRUSHER of a band... Satriani.... Michael Anthony... Chad Smith... never heard better...period... Their version of this tune is spot on ....and above and beyond...the smile on Satrinia's face says it all.... Thanks for posting this. One of the greatest live performances in rock history IMHO. Joe Satriani is in a class by himself and a very classy guy too. Awesome. Dynamite. Nuclear and on and on. Saw Deep Purple in their prime at Chicago Stadium a thousand years ago. Great!
I suppose it's a way to pay tribute to Jon Lord, who would cover the guitar parts that Joe couldn't play when he first joined Purple. The apprentice bringing it back to the Master. :)
Every time I watch this clip, I believe Sammy Hagar is a vocalist who is now in his 70's, can keep up with any of these singers who are decades younger. He is truly a living legend. And the rest of the band, the amount of talent they show is amazing. With Joe Satriani, who needs EVH? Van Halen needed Sammy more than he needed them.

+AJ Reynolds I read the same thing as well as after his 1st leg he sent some tapes to Sam as well, so here's crossing my fingers and toes. Although Ed put out a cryptic message recently about playing a Steinberger guitar he hasn't played since the Sammy Days and people asking for that guitar back. Be prepared for something somewhere with these guys, no that the contract with DLR is ended.
+AJ Reynolds Anyone who read Sammy's autobiography knows there is no way in Hell that he will ever play with Eddie again. Especially after the way the VH brothers treated Mike. If you want VH, you are stuck with DLR.
+Ozzy Maldonado Sheehan is one of the greatest instrumentalists ever born and Vai is a fantastic guitar player. I would pay money to see either or both. DLR, on the other hand, is past the point of seeing. While never a great vocalist, in his prime, he was a fantastic front man. But without the athleticism and without the lion mane of hair, he is nothing.
+Tom Cass I used to see Talas in and around Buffalo, NY when I was in my early 20s. I don't think it was Sheehan that was limited but the band itself. As for your last statement, I feel that he is the bass equivalent of Eddie Van Halen. All the tricks in the world, but not the most melodic of players.
+Tom Cass Same here. Used to play in bands throughout my teens and twenties. James Jamerson rules! I always liked Squire's sounds and deep runs even though I am not that big into progressive. Jaco was great especially in Weather Report. Another all time favorite is Pino Palladino who can play with anyone. Stanley Clarke, with that awesome fingerspread of his, is so melodic. I could listen to him all day.

I think you're absolutely right
Satriani is just absolutely amazing and a big shout out to Chad Smith on drums. I am in my late 60s and saw Deep Purple (whom I loved) perform this song live and honestly this is better and that takes some doing.
You're right, Ian Paice is a tough drummer to follow.
Chad is Average at Best ....Phillip Fish Fisher played on Mother's Milk for Chad was unable to play Taste the Pain ...
You forgot about the best of the band! Michael Anthony is a master.
No guitarist is going to sound better playing Highway Star than Richie Blackmore. On top of that the organ part was either under mixed or missing entirely.
Absolutely True. Better than Original Deep Purple rendition
Satch killed it as always. The guy is just phenomenal.
That solo by Joe is second to none! That is one badass dude right there
As soon as mikey opens his mouth...that voice. He and sammy are magic together.
Yeah you know
Joe Satriani playing John Lord's Hammond solo on the POG is friggin amazing 👍
I was typing a same comment. 😀.
It blows my mind that Satch isn't recognized more as a legend.
Paul Johnson I think it’s because Satriani never really wrote legendary songs like bands of purples caliber and of course sabbath and zeppelin just to name a few even though he has great songs and is a great guitarist.its a shame but people who know music know how great he is.
absolutly!
Yeah. Seriously
Joe Satriani is covering both Blackmore's and Lord's solos - amazing. And he WAS the DP guitarist.
Joe is badass makes it so easy it's not
Joe is badass makes it so easy it's not
Damn straight sir.....heard that the first time I listened to it.....he makes that guitar 🎸 sound like a Hammond B3 organ, fucking legend..........
Chad Smith plays so crisp and on point. Bravo
4 older successful musicians still out there having a good time performing. Fun to watch.
Michael Anthony's voice is still as amazing as ever. Most underrated signer there never was!!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
best than haggar im my opinion
Singer....???😒
Well a singer can keep a good voice their entire life if they take care of it. They usually ruin it by screaming and smoking. If a singer does not do these things, they can keep their voice sounding good until their last day usually. If they learn how to powersing, like the opera guys, etc, which is not screaming.
He gave VH's vocals a texture that really distinguished that band and he is solid on that bass.
@@williamworden3597 glad ya figured that brain teaser out
That was badass. Hands down one of the baddest jams. And chickenfoot killed it.
Absolute best cover of a Deep Purple Classic! These guys are a Super-group! Rock on Chickenfoot!!!
Joe Satriani does both Blackmore's and John Lord's solo's, that's how damn good he is!!!
The man is not from this world
Eddie Van Halen does the who keyboards much better
Really amazing. How true. Great Satriani.
Lord and Blackmore, the masters of music
Actually it wasn't that good... Jon's solo is meant to be played in a Hammond. You can play the notes on a guitar but it doesn't sound like it should.
@doubleheadergr No shame there.Took Coverdale and Glen Hughes also.
They brought this Deep Purple classic to a new level🎸👍
They did justice to a tough song. Michael Anthony was so integral to VH with his high vocals that they can't sound as good without him.
computarman Lol. VH is long dead my friend.
Best tribute of Highway Star I have listened to.
They're having so much goddamn fun and kicking some major ass too - that's what rock 'n' roll is all about \m/
I'm not keen on covers but this is awesome 👍
Yeah HR, it's great to see stars like this having fun playing other people's music and kicking ass while doing it. Who knew Will Farrell was that good on drums? Yes, i know it's not Will!
Indeed!
"I gave it a 10 because it had a good beat and was easy to dance to..." :-)
Best cover on Deep Purple's Highway Star, these guys nailed it, this is how you fucking cover a Rock song!!!
Yep..you own it
Nelson Matos and yet there are 300+ dislikes, wtf?
I also don't get it!! Maybe they are fucking jealous muahahaha
perfect!!
well I hdon't know about that...Metal Church w the late great David Wayne was probably thek best cover of Hwy Star....youd have to take a ride on the way back machine for that version.... early 80s
mind u these guys are not young! Sammy has to be at least 65 here, Satriani abôut 57 and Michael Anthony & Chad Smith both 55!! They sound awesome
+Abida Babida I agree..and not a walking frame in sight! How old are the Stones now?
+Abida Babida micheal anthony is 61
+Abida Babida IMHO this is really horrible, esp. Joe Satriani.
Tom Cass
Sod off!
+Abida Babida they are playing it slow. age is no excuse, this is side street star
For me the greatest compliment to Deep Purple is the greatest rendition of their song Highway Star and Chicken foot just nailed it.
As a drummer i can only say...........Michael Anthony is one hell of a bassplayer.
sings good too 🤘🤘
After that all ya say is ty an hit your cigarette an smile.
yes indeed. superb upper range vocals.
Ed Van Halen taught him all the notes to this song
The Van Halens would have been just another 80's rock band without Anthony.
These guys KILL this man! Im an old timer and Joe's playing on this and the keyboard parts, not to mention Mike's and Sammy's vocals, and his bass playing. Did I say anything about the heartbeat of Chad? DAMN! Killing it!
I was typing a same comment. 😀. How could Joe fulfill the song?😉.
It's a mystery to me why this band isn't touring stadiums. :(
Yeaaah man! #ChickenfootforLIFE \m/
Well said! I’d pay money to see these guys live! They are all incredible!
The fear- based life structure isnt going to be over.. its too good a control mechanism over lambs that are fearful of others who ask questions, and dont follow half- truths and omissions. Yes this music rocks. And btw, no live concert attendance unless you have a QR code Vax certification on your phone.
Amen
Satriani really nailed that guitar solo from Highway Star. Big time the whole band Nailed it..
Sammy was 65 when this was filmed.
Unreal, he's still spot on with this vocal, and effortless.
Sammy is a freak of nature : )
Sammy is right up there with Paul Rodgers. Not only as a musician, but as a vocalist and lead singer... #JustSaying
Al M about time we get Paul Rodgers in the dam hall of fame already!
@@michaeltabor9596 Right! I mean unquestionably top 5 Rock singers of all time.
Like Hagar, Rodgers kept his voice In top shape, unlike Gillan, Coverdale and a few other former greats.
Loved Joe's "organ solo" @ 2:48 on the guitar. Great tone and use of effects.
This is surely the best 'supergroup' ever.. each are just fucking legends 🤟
Professional musicians. These fans got what they paid for.....Outstanding!
ROCK ON.. !!!
Satriani is a genius! a sound from the legendary Hammond organ, on the guitar !!! incredible. How did he do it..........amazing.
With an Electro Harmonix B9 organ emulator?
Playing with DP for a stretch didn't hurt either.
Sammy: "Let cover Deep Purple's Highway Star".
Michael: "But we don't have a keyboard player".
Joe: "I got this."
@@chuckroast5735 and he did ! Highway star, have two solos (keyboard - Jon + guitar - Blackmore) - the first solo (keyboard) is insane! and he did, on the guitar / the sound was beautiful - Hammond organ , Jon , was pleased. R.I.P Master........
i think he uses a digitech whammy there with the harmoniser side set to a higher octave. it sounded like that to me at least. could be another type of harmoniser too.
Absolutely amazing. Joe kills the keyboard solo and then goes on to nail the rest. Stunning performance.
Thought he wouldn’t 🤪
Great version of "Highway Star". Bravo Chickenfoot (Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony, Chad Smith).
+ezrazski Who are you?
+ezrazski Who are you?
Sammy Hagar is overlooked as a Great Rock n Roll Vocalist . He has taken great care himself through the years ✌
Chad Smith Rocks
How is he overlooked. Hes been kicking Ass since the early 70s, maybe late 60s and hes been successful. He ran with VH for 8 years so maybe he was overshadowed by that name a bit but hey hes had a helluva run.
Chad Smith major influence was Mr. Ian paice .
He got a bum rap for being in Van Halen, when he was already a great solo artist he didnt need the grief, hes a good guy from a nice rural Farm town, raised right.
Oh yeah , tequila shots.
He's not overlooked.
Chad Smith should be arrested for the way he assaulted those drums! :)
That's Will Ferrel on Drums!
@@crisshalen Yah man!! Thats agrrrravated ASSAULT!!
😂😂😂
Amazing drumming. A test of endurance on drums for sure.
I agree what an animal
Satriani is a freak... did he just played the original jon lord solo :D awesome...
Satch plays whatever the hell he likes. effortless perfection
Yeah, I was like "where's Jon Lord?" but then Satch did a pretty amazing job with the Hammond solo...!
No he didn't ,it was nothing like it - he's a great player, but that wasn't even close .
I saw a 3 piece band in a big club one night play Lazy. the guitarist used a guitar synth. the singer was the bass player. Tore it up.
Phil X did it better and right way - upward legato, not downward.
Four guys at the TOP of their game. Saw them in Atlanta, and they were incredible.
This is awesome!! Michael Anthony is way underrated as a singer and a musician..he and Sammy were meant to be in a band together.. Van Halen and beyond..
Not only putting on a hell of a great show but having a blast doing it. Those guys looked like they were having so much fun. I would've loved to been there watching. The audience should really appreciate it. Great stuff there!!!!
That was a smokin' cover. They're having fun and it's contagious :D
Great to see Michael Anthony still doing it and doing it great! Sammy is one of the good guys of rock. So happy I found this.
Genius of these Guys to bring it together! Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, Chad Smith, and Michael Anthony! This brings back the feel of the Best Times of Rock. New Fan here guys!
Hats off to all four of these amazing musicians. Mr Satriani - keyboard and guitar solos - awesome
Michael Anthony's awesome unique backing vocals..
Best cover of Highway Star I've ever heard!!!!! "It's got everything" that I could want, epic high singing in the beginning plus MA on back-up, epic guitar solos (2 at that), kick-ass drumming, & of course, good ol' Sammy :) Long live Chickenfoot!
The group Point Blank also did an awesome version.checj it.
Mastermet Glenn Hughes kicks the hell out of this song with Vai and Chad Smith and def worth checking out. I just listened to it 3x.
Great!
If one can nail down both guitar and organ solos that one is absolutely Satriani!
SICK!! Joe even played the keyboard part on the guitar too!!
Incredible.. Thinking back how amazing this song actually was back in the day .. Chicken foot did it true justice..
I suppose it's a way to pay tribute to Jon Lord, who would cover the guitar parts that Joe couldn't play when he first joined Purple. The apprentice bringing it back to the Master. :)
He absolutely destroyed this song!
Whoever thought of putting these 4 together is an even bigger genius than the sum of the band 👊🤟
One of my favorite songs, ever.. And a very nice cover ;) Way to go guys!
One of the best covers of Highway Star!!
Wow! They kicked the shit outta that tune! Literally grabbed it by the throat dragged it all over the stage and kicked it in the nuts! Killer!
find the metal church cover. if you think this one kicked the original in the nuts, metal church kicks its nuts up its own throat and proceeds to strangle it and bang its girlfriend.
Party13laster I think metal church version is more like.. "they Butchered it and let it die alone in a dark room"
+green323turbo ..you are way off on that...Metal Church did a great version of Hwy Star for their style of music.... to me they made it their own... for a whole new generation of fans
Jo Sat is a beast, Chad's wicked, Michael is a master, and that dude Sammy, he's 70 y/o. DAMN THEY SHOULD GET BACK LIKE RIGHT NOW!
Thought that was Will Farrell on drums
@Amos Stubbs Listen to this drummer. Great feel. ua-cam.com/video/kNaLDtyWC6U/v-deo.html
Hell yes.
Joe's a monster on the axe.
You damn right
This band needs to come back.
Like now.
