I play this song in my truck and I’m a country boy with country boy friends and they give me shit for listening to music like this and say this song is so old and that’s not that good. Love my friends to death but they hear music but don’t listen to music. My stepdad says rap isn’t music. I tell him yes you are correct. However, rap done correctly, is poetry with a beat and rhythm. Eminem, NF, Royce, J Cole, Knox Hill and Lil Wayne are the only rappers I listen to on a regular basis.

One thing I love about Em's verse is how he gets more aggressive and angry as he goes on. Like the very thought of him letting his doubts get in his way and stop him pisses him off. He changed the meaning of the song from being about dreaming of what it would be like to not be famous to not letting your dreams stay dreams. To me Em is the greatest. You may disagree and you can, music is subjective. But his lyrics are on another level, he's playing chess while every other lyricist (not just rap) is playing checkers.
this really just isn't true. there are so many better lyricists than midinem. MF DOOM, Black Thought, Mos Def, Andre 3000, MC Lyte, Talib Kweli, Nas, Rakim, Biggie, kendrick, wayne, all much much better lyricism than fucking midinem.

You're dumbing down their lyrics. That chorus is saying to have faith when there doesn't seem to be anything to be hopeful for. To keep grinding even when you haven't seen any of the fruits of your labor yet. That "pretending airplanes are shooting stars" is a metaphor to how your control of perception can help motivate you. That your outlook on things is a CHOICE. I guess them airplane similes flew over your head. 😂

I get you when you say you feel this song, half my life before I moved, I was bullied at primary school (elementary for you guys across the pond) and as luck would have it, my bully lived on the same street as me, I’m an only child so that “pretend, he just stayed outside all day and played with his friends, PRETEND HE EVEN HAD A FRIEND TO SAY WAS HIS FRIEND” always hits different man, I didn’t make my first proper friend until I was about 11 years old.
It drove me to be that “person” everyone knows or can have a laugh with, for 11 years I had fears of not being liked or being subject to bullying again, Em has helped me a lot mentally as I know he has with a lot of people, and even to this day I feel a fear of losing friends or not being liked by people and I’m 25 now and got a perfect circle of friends and I do tend to get along with most people but there’s still that mini me inside sometimes that is scared 😂 crazy I know, but it’s 100% real
