"Served to survive" also seemed evocative of serving a sentence (which could still be metaphorical) That evocation was enhanced, because he follows it with "murdered and bribed." Also -- as I type this, and I hear the song continue, I am hearing a continuing motif of prison language (from Wayne and Eminem) that is evocative of a subtle underlying theme: Life is the sentence. (Which is the sense that we've gotten since Wayne started with his reflective intro.)
I never heard this before, or if I did, I don't remember it. I might have been out of the country when it was released, or something. I appreciate that I stumbled on this video, I just added it to my playlist.
Also - I am watching this a second time. I like how point out aspects of rhyme. Near rhyme, internal rhyme, assonance. And allusions, symbolism, metaphors. I wish I could use this video in class when we do poetry analysis. It could be an activity for the kids to name the literary device that you are describing. Plus it would be a good model for them to be able to then do an analysis on their own. (I can't use this in school because of the language of the song, but I am adding the idea to my notes for next year to look for your channel and see if you will have any videos that I could be used.) So, thanks for that, as well. This was a fortuitous encounter.
