You know, I've been meaning to say this. I don't learn much from Finegold's lectures. At the end of each video I look at my notes I've written down and all it says is: "Checkmate means you win" "Usually you don't want to loose your bishop because then you don't have it" "Loosing your queen is bad" "If you can take a piece for free, take it" "Sicilian defense is good, but the best sicilian is sicilian pizza" "If you see mate in one, play it" "c4 is explosive" "Knife f5" "I'm terrible"
I find myself quoting him all the time. Especially when I hang a piece “terrible!” “What would Grandmaster ken West do? I don’t want to do that” On a side note, ken west is such a great dude for putting up with the torrent of hilarious abuse
i dont mean to be offtopic but does any of you know of a way to log back into an instagram account..? I was stupid forgot the password. I appreciate any tips you can give me!
24:47 "Queen takes bishop leads to mate................ for black." This and "you cannot check your own king" might be my favorite among many Ben Finegold moments.
I started to try to index all the insults (I want this btw), but I gave up after 3 minutes. Only Ken West ones so far (very suspicious). Insult index: Ken West #1: 1:02 Ken West #2: 2:41 Ken West #3 3:10 I love the Svindler insults the most I think. Perhaps peppered in with some Ginger GM.
Ken West is one of the big names in chess organization of St. Louis, he writes and organizes does newsletters, in other words he is one of those kind souls that does everything they can do to keep chess running in the local area. But if he was good at chess he would just play instead of doing all this other stuff. I looked up his USCF chess rating he's floored at 1200.
One time I was playing on lichess and I saw someone named "GMKenWest" or something like that. I wonder if it was a real Ken West sighting or just another imitator... Hmmm.
Of course, the English were the best in the world at one point (somewhere between the French and Paul). Also, we have a few British GMs, but, I guess we just don't play Chess, which is a shame, but we win at everything else so I don't lose any sleep over it. Man, the truth hurts.
thanks for asking Mr. Finegold, I am fine. Have something to drink, some nice food, something to smoke and a comfy chair. But please continue. Don't let my overall comfortable state distract you.
stephen0793 Because of Kh7, escaping (there's no more discoveries) - he actualy covered that on the video, I guest it was GM Ken West that sugested the move.
At 15:00 wouldn't King c5 still work? After king c7 white king can go to B5 with the threat of going to A6 and there is no way to stop this, leading to a faster mate.
Actually, the last puzzle, seem to me that even if it white to move when the king is at a2, Bc3 should be sufficiant. After Rf2+ you can play Kb3 and when hte checks comes you can slowly inch you king down to a/b8 where you can defend the check with the rook.
@@dr.bluesfield3629 No it wont, since you've moved your rook with check. But I can see some other flaws with my plan since the king cant leave the bishop unguarded (so we cant move the king to a/b8), so it wont work. It might possibly work with Be5, but unlikely. Need an engine to check it.
It hurted my brain having to calculate that pawn ending. the kamksy one I solved in 1 second because I'm not that good. Didn't attempt the 2nd puzzle because you didn't say pause the video and the answer got shouted out before I could solve it. That last puzzle was hard, I missed the solution on that one. How can a puzzle with only 3 pieces be difficult? I think I accidentally exercised my brain on a Ben Finegold video.
What I like to do when solving a puzzle is looking for my opponents ideas. Usually it just gives me an idea of how urgent the position is, but sometimes it leads directly to the answer, especially in situations where you're material up.
Like what tha hell! [8:56], Ben says that those positions are normally hard for grand masters. But I believe I clearly solved that puzzle with 1. Kb3. White has 2 connected pass pawns so it's just a matter of stopping black's flank pawns from queening (successfully). Initial calculation shows that king cannot chase down the two black pawns. But from my calculations, black is not able to queen because white queens first with check. A: 1. Kb3 e4 2. Kc4 e3 3. Kd3; White stops both pawns and eventually queens. B: 1. Kb3 e4 2. Kc4 a5 3. Kb5 e3 4. Kb6 e2 5. c7#; C: 1. Kb3 e4 2. Kc4 a5 3. Kb5 Kc7 4. Ka6 a4 5. Ka7; Queens and stop both pawns. D: 1. Kb3 e4 2. Kc4 a5 3. Kb5 Kc7 4. Ka6 e3 5. Ka7 e2 6. b8=Q+; Then take black pawns. E: 1. Kb3 e4 2. Kc4 a6 3. Kd4 ; White stops both pawns and eventually queens. F: 1. Kb3 a6; Lines very similar to D & E. G: 1. Kb3 a5; Lines similar enough to D. H: 1. Kb3 Kc7 2. Kc4 a5; Lines very similar to D. I: 1. Kb3 Kc7 2. Kc4 a6 3. Kd5 a5 4. Kxe5; Then hunt down the a pawn. J: 1. Kb3 Kc7 2. Kc4 e4; Same as E. All of this was done by head but I couldn't be missing anything. Only candidates moves for black are 1... e4, 1... Kc7, 1... a5, 1... a6; and I just have to calculate around two connected passers that keep the black king honest, and two dangerous black pawns.
Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck!!!! My calculation abilities are horrible. I never bothered to analyse Ka7 for black to counter white reaching a6 and b6. White still wins but what if he didn't.
Ben, sir, if you ever have the time I would like to play you correspondence one day, maybe on lichess or a different site, thank you for your time and videos. P.S. I solved all of these, so that is why I want to play you. To enjoy a game with someone who can teach me as I play.
i'm a simple man: i see ken west in the title and i like the video
JCoggers snap
Naturally
When I saw Ken West in the title I was immediately hooked.
You know, I've been meaning to say this. I don't learn much from Finegold's lectures.
At the end of each video I look at my notes I've written down and all it says is:
"Checkmate means you win"

"If you see mate in one, play it"
"c4 is explosive"
"Knife f5"
"I'm terrible"
Whwn attacking say ARRRRRR
Yeah thats terrible, we pay a lot of money for this videos
I find myself quoting him all the time. Especially when I hang a piece “terrible!”
“What would Grandmaster ken West do? I don’t want to do that”
On a side note, ken west is such a great dude for putting up with the torrent of hilarious abuse
Soviet AI “Checkmating is easier if you move your pieces fewer squares”
Apparently you didn't learn how to spell "lose".
I love that GM KW got the right move even though he thought he was checking his own king. Very suspicious!
i dont mean to be offtopic but does any of you know of a way to log back into an instagram account..?
I was stupid forgot the password. I appreciate any tips you can give me!
Yeah, it's obvious to me that his mouth is moving much faster than his brain, and he is aspiring to be something he isnt.
Ken West's reaction to the checking his own thing was hilarious, sounds like a lovely guy, can't help but laugh at the mistake though!
30:36 "Always look for stalemate when you got nothin'."
- GM Ben Finegold
"..Ken West knows what I'm talking about."
- GM Ben Finegold *nodding his head*
Yes, dont resign and show us all you know something about chess.
I love when Ben talks to me, i actually answer him, wish he could hear me.
"Mister Ken West, you cannot check your own king." terrible if he did that in a real game
Kakarot It's "Grand master" show proper respect
Janci Vianci I said "Mister", not "Master" :) also that wahr "grand master" ben finegold said
+Kakarot It's a joke dumbass
I am starting to wonder if he's an actor or something. I mean. Check your own king... what.
ik
"Ken West you cannot check your own king" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ken West is so lucky to be publicly demeaned by Ben Finegold.
0:31 Hitman in the window
Vincent Farrugia Where is the barcode?
Krishna Jha at the bar
24:47 "Queen takes bishop leads to mate................ for black."
This and "you cannot check your own king" might be my favorite among many Ben Finegold moments.
"tall and good looking like eric hansen" CHESSBRAH
Hahaha haven't watched yet but know I love this video from the title.
I really want to meet whoever Ken West is xD
28:16
Now that's meme material right there.
I hit the like button before the intro even finished.
I started to try to index all the insults (I want this btw), but I gave up after 3 minutes. Only Ken West ones so far (very suspicious).
Insult index:
Ken West #1: 1:02
Ken West #2: 2:41
Ken West #3 3:10
I love the Svindler insults the most I think. Perhaps peppered in with some Ginger GM.
Only """"""GM""""""" Ken West can check his own king!
After all Ben Finegold's videos on youtube, I'm still not sure if Ken West is an actual GM or if it's just one of Mr Finegold jokes
Trust me if you see Ken West you won´t get impressed.
This video or those series should be named "GM Ken West | Patzer's Paradise"
The title and the thumbnail are so good
So good =D keep up the good work!
GM Finegold is the best
He's back
Poor Ken West, has to endure all those jokes about him.
Only when Arjun isn't in the audience.
he is THE k=Ken West
That last puzzle was really hard. At least I found the sequence Gata missed. It took me about 3 minutes, but I Gata it.
A shot at Hanson in the first 2 minutes and a title with Ken West in it??
24:36 28:07 i never LMAO'ed so hard in my life
Amazing lecture salute to GM Finegold he's awwesome
Wow, that 2nd puzzle was really really tricky. Just a subtle yet specific king move means the game.
One time I was playing on lichess and I saw someone named "GMKenWest" or something like that. I wonder if it was a real Ken West sighting or just another imitator... Hmmm.
About that third puzzle, doesn't rook f7 win with bishop takes rook queen h8? I mean sure there's a few checkmates possibility but i was just curious
What's wrong with RD8 in the first puzzle?
Ben vs simon Williams
Like for Ben
Comment For Simon
I liked and commented.
His constant ripping on Ken West is hilarious
is there a reason that rook e6 doesn't prevent mate ?
Ben's got a lot of time to think of puzzles in the tanning salon
Nice Pulp Fiction reference there.
Ken West in the title? Terrible.
GM Ken West? Puzzling. About as Suspicious as a British GM
Of course, the English were the best in the world at one point (somewhere between the French and Paul). Also, we have a few British GMs, but, I guess we just don't play Chess, which is a shame, but we win at everything else so I don't lose any sleep over it. Man, the truth hurts.
Suspicious
In the first puzzle, after rook c5, what if black plays rook e6?
The first example would also be won with Qd8. If f6/f5 Qxe8#. If Rxd8 Rxd8# as the pawn is controlling g7
I came for the Ginger GM puns
1st puzzle what about Qf6 After kf8 2. Rd7 what's black move?
11:35 brilliant 😂
thanks for asking Mr. Finegold, I am fine. Have something to drink, some nice food, something to smoke and a comfy chair. But please continue. Don't let my overall comfortable state distract you.
Oh Jiminy Christmas!
36:40 the AP reference though.
The L (Louis) makes the S (Saint) look like a dollar on the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis logo.
Ben Finegold is the funniestestestest
"Ken West, you can not check your own king"
At 23:40 I saw another to mate in 3 with white.
Rook to F7 and once the bishop captures, white plays queen H8 and then G7
TheRejectedDevils Nxg7
And after Nxg7 white has compensation for the queen according to GM Ken West.
In the puzzle at minute 31:00, instead of kA2, why not rG1 discovered check preventing check on F1?
stephen0793 Because of Kh7, escaping (there's no more discoveries) - he actualy covered that on the video, I guest it was GM Ken West that sugested the move.
what about pastime paradise?
"...now, in this position, white wants to play queen g seven mate, with advantage" lmao
At 15:00 wouldn't King c5 still work? After king c7 white king can go to B5 with the threat of going to A6 and there is no way to stop this, leading to a faster mate.
No, because by the time white king gets to a7 black will already queen and then it's just draw
5:50 LOL
He's really aged in the past 3 years
Yeh.
Actually, the last puzzle, seem to me that even if it white to move when the king is at a2, Bc3 should be sufficiant. After Rf2+ you can play Kb3 and when hte checks comes you can slowly inch you king down to a/b8 where you can defend the check with the rook.

It might possibly work with Be5, but unlikely. Need an engine to check it.
notification squad?
is here
Instead of playing qe8 check I think re6 works as well and is mate or substantial loss in material more than just a rook
Ken West beatdown!
15:00 why not kc5 ka7 kb5 kb8 kb6 ?
Am I blind or is that just plain old zugzwang?
As long as black doesn't want to queen a pawn instead of playing Kb8
Who is Ken West?
But if Kc5 and black plays Kc7, why can't white play Kb5 then?
will Ken West end up like the most traumatized chess player ever
move the rook and block the escape first
lol i thought they were gonna play gangsters paradise at the end.
I used to but Now i'm don't feel shame for losing to 1400 elo players, not anymore.
Is that a diet starbucks frappuccino?
What happens if black plays took f6 at 38:00
White rook f7
Black king g8
White rook f7
Easy peasy from there.
Ah. He covered that next. Dough!!!
It hurted my brain having to calculate that pawn ending. the kamksy one I solved in 1 second because I'm not that good. I "hurted" my brain reading your comment.
Buu i wanted for winning congision qa8
Youre in wang chung :)
Hi
Are you Arjun from the club?
whos ken west lol
Ken West is not a GM according to the USCF player rankings. He's not a member and his GM rating is FIDE perhaps?
FIDE is the organization that oversees chess titles.
0:33 fora temer! Kkkkkk
E eu que achei que era o único Brasileiro fã do GM Ben Finegold...
Tem muitos, aparentemente. Very suspiscious.
