imagine playing chess vs a 12 year old and getting roasted about it 40 years later
.....or being a near 40 year old dad, teaching his son chess, losing while getting roasted about it. that hahaha....would suck...haha...I bet. how would I know?.....
Hahahahahahahahahahahahhaha i lost it

Shout out to the singular guy deadass carrying his class by laughing and answering his questions. Mad respect.
He is likely the only one to succeed in chess later on

@@High_Priest_Jonko 7*
This guy is obnoxious as hell though. Some people just want to hear the chess discussion and not have to fake laugh because the presenter is also trying to develop a comedy routine.
@@_trismegistus you don't expect some personality in a class called "Beginner Beatdown"?
Ben Finegold: "I attack his pawn with"

@@mr_niceman Well i know some but not short forms and stuff.
Tinu Jijo lmao sorry did UA-cam just send you the notification of my reply a month later?😂
It hurts to see a candidly funny teacher just getting bombarded with silence
it feels like the office. Maybe he was trying to make the people on youtube laugh
in some other videos, when they laugh he tolds them to shut up.
class full of awkward nubs most likely
it's actually kinda funnier

@Paras Mento You seem suited for this lesson's audience...
@Paras Mento I agree. Chess is very serious business. No talking, please.
That moment you're German and he asks what language "Zwischenzug" comes from and you don't guess it right cause he bottles it so badly...
hahahaha dachte ich mir auch :D
Yeah, that hurt to listen to, and I'm not even german.
His pronunciation combined with his uppity personality gave me ligma.
people still trying this ligma joke are literally giving me sugondese...
@@SkyKing1225 I hear that Saw-Con is handing out free ligma and sugondese vaccinations. Are you going to Saw-Con?
What an awful crowd...Finegold is no comedic genius, but he said lots of stuff that was actually funny and got zero reaction.
To me Finegold seems tired, and just annoyed to be there. He also has a distracting gap tooth, his body is falling apart and his meticulously acquired grandmaster chess skill is being used to instruct a group of complete beginners.
:(
djkramnik
... damn, where does all this hate come from
Ispidre how is that hate
because his jokes arent that good and he's an asshole about it. don't expect a laugh at every joke you have, stop being entitled. why would i laugh at stuff you say when you call me slow
Finegold is fking hilarious. Got me into learning chess for fun because he made it fun. His humor takes a lot of references to movies and music and shows to understand, but if you don't get what he is saying, you do not get the reference.
Reign Lionheart What was the ice skating joke referencing
Reign Lionheart Ok I’ll just admit I was trolling you to check if you actually knew. It’s a South Park joke about Brain Boitano (spelling?).
"This may confuse some of you, but I was born" Lol
“If I take his queen, what does he do instead”
“Castle?”
lol 😂
"So slow audience today" and no one reacted. LOL gold!
Idk why youtube recommended this to me, but this guy is a hilarious teacher!
Doctor: You have 38 minutes and 59 seconds to live, what will you do with your time left on Earth?
Me:
Ben Finegold was born to play fighting games with his banter, but sadly found chess too soon and had to settle for that more noble sport. Shame we can't see him let out his BM against Daigo.
Awesome lecture by Mike Kummer!
+Jason “cyberspace entity” Doe Does anyone know any jokes about Mike Kummer? Why is he so happy all the time? etc.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Ben: 18:35 YOU AT HOME... INCORRECT!
Me: *raises middle finger*
kmarasin I actually got that right
Same here and I lost 106 games in a row to a level 6 computer. Still haven't won a single game against it...that's probably why I was able to guess it because I've lost so many times.
I actually guessed Rh4
It was hilarious though. X)
It fit perfectly with me, since it synced with my thoughts exactly, and I was incorrect
I havent played chess since chess club in highschool and i feel like i would eat this dudes class up. how is everybody so quiet with such little laughter? teacher is killing this presentation
"This game was played in st. paul 1982, and I was white".

you were wrong I GOT IT RIGHT. Rook to H4. Its like you aren't even listening to me.

Yup, Rh4 is the only sensible move here.
As soon as he said “you at home” I immediately thought Rh4 and he said “wrong” and I honestly thought he was right because it was a snap judgment. Made me laugh when I realized I was right.
Yes, HOOK TO R4 definitely the correct position to move the pieces to, I agree.
It's amazing to me that grandmasters sometimes seem like such regular guys. Ben Finegold is so intelligent that I'm not even intelligent enough to understand how intelligent he is, but he's about as haughty as a truck driver.
8:31 is my favourite Finegold moment.
you're a great teacher, full of jokes, advice, and disses
I actually answered when he said YOU! AT HOME!
And I was disappointed when he said incorrect after I said Rook H4, lol.
Majora1988 I was shouting out loud the correct answer even before he said 'you at home'! Also felt bad but luckily I didn't take it personal. :)

This video has been floating around in my suggested videos for a while now.
I finally decide I've got the time to check it out, expecting it to be something like an online streaming session of him just slaying noobs.
Turns out he's teaching a class and I actually learn a few things about chess.

It's adorable seeing him putting all this effort into making this entertaining. Not many GMs are willing to make their explanations truly clear for beginners - ppl in the comments calling him arrogant are absolutely out of their minds.
I have no idea how he managed to be that effortlessly funny throughout the entire video, especially with zero reaction, but he did

Saint Louis Chess Club, this was a 5 star treat, great chess presented by a rye, sarcastic grandmaster made this a joy to view. Grandmaster Ben Finegold proved with his witty quips that his obvious intellect isn't limited to chess. I clicked on this and immediately went to full screen without reading the description, I was then surprised to see that this came from the St Louis Chess Club, I thought this was straight from New York City. More kudos to you for providing such a great guest lecturer.
This is the best thing I have ever experienced. You, sir, have a gift when it comes to teaching.
"Man what a slow class... I mean good job, good class" 😂
Thank you SLCC! These videos with experts who explain things so clearly and with humour (if they've got it!) are absolutely excellent. I'm just above beginner level and these are instructive and inspirational. Lessons learnt:
* Exchange bad pieces for good pieces
* Protect your king early by castling
* Castling diagonally opposite means a draw is less likely
* If you've castled and your opponent has not, open up the centre
* Prefer to mate rather than gratuitous piece taking
I guess I had like pretty good chess/strategy instincts when I was younger. Often beating people older than me or giving them a run for their money. I was the only one to beat our 8th grade math teacher. But like when you start getting into advanced chess theory and people who study it, it's so incredibly humbling how out of my league I am. Always fancied myself a chess player, but not anymore. Your videos are interesting, entertaining, and humbling, thank you Ben Finegold.
Lmao if I was in that crowd I would be the only one giggling at Ben's jokes.
Gonzo same thing I imagine
Oh i love this dude! I would love to go to one of his classes!! His humor geeks me out
This guy is so entertaining... I want to see more of these from this guy!!!
I don't even play chess, but this was fascinating.
Both educational and fucking hilarious! Such a horrible audience though.... Ben deserves better!
You gotta love Ben Finegold. I didn't want to watch the entire video, but he caught me and so I did watch it all.
This guy is so entertaining. Thanks for sharing.
Shit, all I see is nerds yet I am one of them, I am watching and enjoying. Chess is such an addictive game at least for me, I love it yet I am terrible.

try quakelive, it's chess but with guns :D
guns are bad
I mean, knowing that a computer can play this, go and League of Legends all at the same time and defeat the world champions of all three...
Yeah, this is all for fun, now. It takes less mental power to just make money from trading stocks. But Chess is still a valid game, just like every other game. Computers are better, but computers can't enjoy the game (yet).
Ben is a legend in his own mind.
His humour keeps the class awake. Amazing lectures he delivers.
This video was hilarious and packed with a lot of nice info. I'm subbing to this channel and Ben Finegold right now lmao
"I'm Ben Finegold filling in for Mike Kummer."
"I'm gonna take a page outta Mike's book and insult, as much as possible, total beginners, because that seems the fairest."
Finegold is attempting to fulfill his substitution duty to its fullest, including the usual atmosphere of the class.

Finegold for President 2016. Running on the platform "always repeat", "telling the truth is risky", and "not Buchanan."
Garrett Deutermann that sounds very suspicious.
firsttime i watched this it was for the jokes... after playing lots n lots of games im back and those "basics" about developing, castling, hanging pieces... if youre a beginner this stuff is essential, pay attention
Learned more from this video than from a whole book !
33:00 calculation is so... amazing. The bish sacrifice followed by fork or mate is... I have no words!
At around 26:30 when he is comparing c6 to Rg7 he mentions that a computer probably prefers Rg7. I got curious and checked using Stockfish and it actually prefers c6 over Rg7. But neither move is the best move as SF prefers bringing the the rook to h1 by either castling or moving the king to d2 or e2.
This also explains why Ben is the best.... But not the world champion :(
The move I thought to play was castling. I want my GM title now please. I am clearly the superior Chess player.

I like the thumbnail. "Are you white?"
Seems like the answer to many of life's questions.
How can a question be an answer?
It's more that the question leads to such an obvious answer that the answer its self is not needed, or a rhetorical question, if you like.
I came here looking for this comment.
Believe it or not I just won a knockout tournament final today using this technique. I watched the video in the noon and the match was in the evening. My opponent kept his King in the center. I used two rooks, a bishop, a knight, and the queen to attack and he just resigned.
These videos are strangely satisfying to watch...
