  • This video is about three of the most amazing drum tuning tips EVER.
The hardest part about tuning drums is definitely evening out the pitches of a drumhead and this is exactly what the first drum tuning tip is all about. What most people don’t realize: Instead of listening to every single pitch we only have to check half of the lugs since opposing lugs will always sound even. This is often completely ignored in your average drum tuning tutorial and it’s a total bummer, since this information makes your life so much easier. Less pitches to worry about, less possibilities to get really frustrated. You’ll also find a very short tutorial on how to get even pitch on a drumhead - if you wanna dive a little bit deeper, go check out the first part of my "Drum Tuning Tutorial" (@7Yjg).
After that we get into the widespread "drum tuning/guitar tuning" analogy which is supposed to guarantee you a stable tuning. Well, it doesn’t. Friction works both ways on a drumhead and I’ll show you a very neat and effective way to get the most stable tuning possible. Shoutout to Michael Küttner for showing me this little drum tuning tip many years ago.
After tuning a tom, you’ll probably put it back on its mount at some point. And this is where all kind of crazy stuff can happen. So listen very closely and make sure your drum sound is not obstructed by any hardware issues. By the way, the „maximum sustain (for maximum annoyance)“ tuning is appropriate for getting the point across, but that's probably it...

Good hacks - I also realised, after some time, that opposite lugs make the same pitch. I tend to also feel the drum head tension at each lug to ensure the tension is also similar. The test with the same tom holder causing good and bad sounds was really interesting, and explains some confusing results i’ve had sometimes tuning rack toms.

Nice. Thank you for your comment! Btw: Your name just made me think of some records I listened to in the 90s, which is very awesome! :)

Awesome video. I had a kind of intuitive confused sense of the opposite lug situation, but you explained it all very well. With the second lug-mounted rack tom mount, what exactly did you do to adjust it? It looks like you just turned the whole mount and tom assembly a bit. Can you explain what you did and why that affected the sound? The first mount made a bit more sense where the rod being inserted to different lengths would change the sound.

Hey Scott. That was exactly what I did, the sound gets "stuck" sometimes with this particular tom holder and a slight adjustment fixes the whole thing very easily. With the first mount it's a little bit different. The sound can also be fixed by extending the cymbal stand its mounted on (no changes on the length of the rod). Crazy, right? Sadly, I couldn't put it in the video because I messed up the recording. -.- btw, the case where a tom goes completely dead is most common with BD mounts in my experience. a buddy of mine (with a Yamaha Stage Custom kit) asked for help recently and literally the only fix that worked was mounting the 12" tom on a separate cymbal stand.

@@drum_hacks So strange. Thanks for the helpful video and reply. If I had a bad tom I definitely wouldn't have thought to just turn the whole thing a little to change the sound, haha.
