dude ngl this might be my favorite video of yours, it’s always so challenging for me to find nice sounding drum grooves like this with a comprehensive tutorial. i know this isn’t your regular thing BUT this format nailed it. please continue doing this every now and then. omg i’m gonna learn this groove today i’m so FUCKING HYPED!
I can’t manage the snare at the same time as the hat pattern, my brain just can’t handle it. Here’s to a lot more listening in hopes it will understand next week!
Lots of work later I got it down, I really had to isolate each pattern over 4 and just work on building muscle memory, and then put them together. The best strategy for me was to think about the ostinato as 3 16th notes and a rest over 4 16th beats.
I’ve been trying to figure out the sticking so I could practice it, it feels like it’s RL R RL L RL RL R L (RL is played together) but something feels wrong
One of the analogies I use when talking to my students about studying math is actually that learning it has a lot more in common with learning an instrument than other subjects. Both require you to sit down and do a lot of routine practicing; you'll never learn either if you don't sit down and put the time in.
You just made my heart melt with that hi hat trick. ...it may have been your hair too. Either way I’m melted. Honestly though...the ghosts on the snare are the real trick here. Beautiful.
I failed my join exams to the jazz college, and absolutely burned out with drums... but your videos are so inspiring and motivating, that I started practice again ty so much, Zack < 3 cheers from Russia ;з
try still feeling it in full time while playing double (essentially 1 and 3 are your downbeats/start of the bar) then you won't have to scramble to feel the pulse it overall makes it feel more relaxed. focus on keeping the original pulse the same bc most people have a tendency to rush or drag double time bc its sonic speedy boi time. also make sure you aren't having tension where tension isn't needed. don't waste ur energy on ur shoulders being tight. put that into ur playing ya feel?
Im assuming its getting the ride cymbal pattern fast enough that is the hard part for you. It takes time, you gotta train the wrist and build up the muscles in the hand. Dont expect to be able to swing at 300+ bpm right away. It will take you years most likely

Lots of work later I got it down, I really had to isolate each pattern over 4 and just work on building muscle memory, and then put them together. The best strategy for me was to think about the ostinato as 3 16th notes and a rest over 4 16th beats.
