I've heard a lot about "cattle rustlers" in the US recently, was very prevalent back in the civil war era. Unfortunately, it's still taking place today. You're a very fortunate farmer to get your livestock back, I hope it rid you of some stress but also helps you think of ways to protect your farm and Animals. Well wishes from Alaska.
Hi Akway, Thanks and welcome to the channel! I think as food becomes more expensive this will become more of a problem world wide! Either way - I have to reconsider my security!
Thanks! Yes, I've experienced something similar with my ex employers herd! They tried to steal 60 oxen but couldn't get away with a single one! The wilder temperament has it's uses in some instances.
Sorry Shane, glad you got your animals back after all your work to build up your herd. The herd is coming along nicely though. The little black calf is looking nice and healthy. I look forward to your future videos.
So sorry to hear that, I would suggest you get the cattle bells and move the cattle to a camp closer to home in the evenings until you get your security sorted. I know the pain of losing cattle.
Hope you all good please be careful guys……am sorry for that unfortunate issue I was working on my cows this week one cow stand on me a gave me foot fructure
We used to farm in the bushman nek area, kzn..every full moon the basutos would come down the mountains and take cattle and horse's and disappear back up the mountain ..we would try track them down on horse back..only about a 30percent recovery rate..well done!
It is a sad story and we as farmers are not getting any help from the police. Mine 15 were recovered, syndicate caught right handed but even today no one was arrested
Hey Tumelo, Welcome to the channel! Yes, it's a challenge and successful recovery happens very seldom! We are all affected - big farmers, small farmers, communal farmers and unfortunately the authorities aren't always very helpful
These type of events scare me, and Im really interested in cattle & sheep farming, but I have no agricultural land, what would be your best advice to enter the industry ? I have a full time job though, and just to add i love Bonsmara Cattle, Boran is my 2nd choice.
Hi Kgwadi, Your best bet would be to see if you can rent grazing/land at a reasonable price. Security will always be an issue and you would need to find the best measures for that area. Bonsmara and Boran are good breeds 👍
Thats one of the ups in farming i have just recovered mine but didn't recover one. It was so stressful to look for mi animals. I found them after 10 days.
Hey Itumeleng, It's a bad feeling! I have ordered some GPS collars that I'll be showcasing soon! Hopefully they will help dissuade the thieves! Glad you got yours back!
Im sorry to hear this, from experience its most probably some one very close to your operation, i have been hit 5 times where one of the times they took 20 animals. It helps using the African traditional way to get them back
Hi Thabo, I agree. Most times it's someone close to home. But I only have one man working for me - and I don't suspect him of being involved. I could be wrong - but I'm convinced he's not involved.
Here in kzn stock theft determines how you live and farm. There is a system available which i use where gps tracking collars with an electronic geofence alarm are fitted. Pricey but it works. Good luck.
Sorry l to hear this, glad all is okay and all the animals have been accounted for… could you kindly do a video of the steps you followed to report. Did SAPS come and investigate? What are the key learning points and what would you do differently, including checking on your herd and parameter on a daily?🙏🏾
Hi Thabang, Thanks man! Not much yo report on the SAP. I went in, opened a case and gave my statement. Haven't recieved a case number yet. They haven't come out to investigate either. Lets see what happens.... Going forward I think it's always best to check your animals first. I also think investing in GPS collars will be a wise choice. I'll be adding some aggressive male ostriches as well as livestock guard dogs. Later on I'll put in some solar powered cameras with a night vision function.
Stock theft! I'm glad you found them again Stock theft hit us 3 times in the past and never recovered any of those cattle stolen in 3 different occasions
Ay yay yay crime seems to be part of our daily lives in SA. Glad you got back what belongs to you. Is there any tracking tech available to track animals remotely?
Askies Shane glad you got them back, the last stress you need, especially since the attempts tend to multiply once you’re hit once. You must try some muthi to strengthen your kraal
Thanks and welcome to the channel! Yes, once they hit you they usually try again! I do believe that the ngunis gave them trouble thats why they left them between the neighbours cattle! Either way - I'll have to be more vigilant! I'm looking at buying some of those GPS collars. Hope that will help!
Very sorry to be watching so late but was running errands with my niece before she goes back to Veterinary University and got caught in a snowstorm and everything went downhill. Sounds like you had a worse day.
Eish, that's a real ball ache. Hopefully you & your neighbors can patrol & work together on security. Stock theft is a clear & present threat to agriculture in this country. A friend of mine lost 10 pregnant heifers last year, in one shot. Worst part was the guys cut off the animals hocks, meaning when they were found, they had to be put down. 😢 All of them were within 2 weeks of dropping their calves. Absolute disaster. The guys who took the animals were Zimbabwean Nationals & were not traced.
Hey man! So so sorry to hear that your heifers were stolen! I hope you Catch the bastards. Maybe put the cattle in a Kraal! Solar CCTV as well. Get security ie trained guard dogs as well! Ohh glad to hear you got the animals back. One, word of advise though. You described one neighbour farmer as “black farmer” . That maybe interpreted wrongly! Sid from Aussie (originally from Southern Africa) love your show though.
I am guilty in that my branding hasn't been done yet..... But branding isn't a huge deterrant. If they don't slaughter your animals they are loaded and moved to a different province.
Hi Bryan, Thanks. However the thieves often steal stock, move them a few kilometers and then slaughter them. By the time you get there all you find is the heads, internal organs and feet. So branding and tattoos help - but aren't a huge deterrant. Farmers have resolved to cameras, GPS collars, security guards and in some cases - armed guards to protect their livestock.
Hi Karabo, I already have a herdsman on the farm. Problem is that he sometimes sleeps over in town. This was one of those nights! The sooner I can get a house up with a kraal - the better!!!
That's what I was thinking as well... This thing of stock theft is very bad in our country. Sorry Shane...having an armed security at night is important lately because these criminals are heavily armed most of the times
Hi Dirkie, I am comfortable that the herdsman had nothing to do with it. I know it's often an inside job giving out crucial information to outsiders. My late father survived a farm attack where this was the case. But I don't suspect him at all. He worked 7 years for the previous owner without a single loss and I take better care of him. Possible - but I doubt it.
It's the trials of the whole country where you expect the best after the worse weather conditions - maybe Shane consider a kraal system. At least they are all accounted for, yes they will come please take care...
Hi Janco, Dankie man! Ek oorweeg om vir my Anatool honde te kry. My swaer gebruik hulle met sy skape met groot sukses! Gaan ook van daai GPS halsbande kry wat jou bel as daar te veel beweging is!
Hi Tzabo, I know!!! I have been holding off branding them because I first want to get the ngunis inspected and cleared for stud..... But I'll have to resolve that quickly!
So why is it significant that the other farmer is a black guy and the others are called neighbors? We are really not interested in his color he could just be your neighbor. See small things you South Africans take lightly some people don’t because of your history. Love your channel just call them neighbors as you did the other, where I come from farmer come in all sorts, I am not gonna say he is Indian, white, black because he is a farmer.
Sorry to hear that Shane. I am glad you got your animals back.
Thanks Thokoza!
You are very fortunate to have recovered all of them, God bless and keep up the great work!
Hi Michael,
Thanks and welcome to the channel!
What a tale! That will be on that the grandkids will want to hear again and again and again!
Hey Jake, it's how things are over here! Youre animals are looking good despite the conditions! 🍻

Sorry for the stress. It is our unfortunate state of affairs in our country. Grateful that you were able to recover all your heifers... 🙌🙌🙌
Hey Frans,
Thanks man! That will teach me for not getting my collars sooner!
Sorry to hear that you had to endure all the stress from this attempt at theft.
But very happy that you were able to recover all your animals
Hey Finbarr,
Thanks man! It is what it is - part of living in this country! Just happy I got them back!
I am sorry to hear that, but glad you were able to recover your cattle! Just subscribed to the channel!

I'm so happy you received them back brother
Thanks Manako!

It's the bane of any SA farmer's existence! Especially because the authorities aren't too reliable.
Very bad Shane, 15 of my pregnant boergoats were stolen last year, never recovered. It's very frustrating
Hey Vincent,
It's a real problem & frustation! Unfortunately the authorities aren't always helpful in these instances!

I hear you man - it's a big problem around here too!
WISH YOU ALL THE BEST.
Thanks man - you too!
I think its time to setup those wires,if their handles at untimely hours you will get an immediate alert on your phone
Hi Jack,
I'm busy working on some efficient solutions starting with GPS tracking collars!
I stopped using names and switched over to tag numbers when the animals got to just under 100 that side. 😂😂we ran out of names.
Hey Koketso,
Welcome to the channel!
Names are never a good thing as you get too attached to the animals!
I'll be tagging them in the next week or so!
