Thanx for the vid...what is happening with the skin of those Sussex cows that their skin seems shedding or is it thick coating that regenerates afresh..?
What does it mean when the cow skips birth..is it old even though it doesn't seem to be and no longer gives birth or its just some challenge a breeder can overcome?
Cows can skip for multiple reasons: 1. They are in poor body condition and do not carry enough fat to cycle/maintain pregnancy. 2. There is a physiological problem like and abscess in the ovaries/uterus/cervix - rare occurence. 3. She is too old and no longer cycling. Generally though - if a cow is too old she generally is too thin. This can be confirmed by checking her teeth.
But why would a cow that went high on price at auction a week ago then score lesser the following week..like the cow that went to 9k from 11k on a week time interval?
It depends on how many buyers are at the auction. It can also differ from town to town. If there are many buyers - the demand is high and prices will be better. Of there are few buyers - prices are lower. Supply and demand.
Hi Bethuel, That will depend on the breed as well as the individual animal. With cows - as long as she still has teeth and can give you a calf every year. Some cows can do this up to 20 years of age. With bulls - 16 - 18 years in some cases. He must still have good libido and be able to mount cows regularily. But there are cows and bulls that struggle to make it past 12 years of age.
Not neccessarily, there were only two buyers and they weren't always buying tge same animals. So if the auctioneer opens with a price and only one buyer is interested - there's no one to push up the price from the opening bid.
Price excludes VAT, unless the seller is not VAT registered. If the seller is VAT registered VAT will be added to the price. Commission is normally paid by the seller
A cow should have a nice, balanced, level udder with smallish teats. If any part of the udder is significantly larger than the others, or jangs lower or out of shape - or if the teats are too large then it's a bad udder.
Hi Graham, You are most certainly correct. Not all auctions are equal and I'll be covering a larger one soon. However, small auctions are a reality and this is what typically happens when you have only two buyers on the day. Thanks for the comments!
I'd love to see a bigger auction. Please attend one for us.. we appreciate the videos. Thanks for your hard work.
Hi Mzwa,
I'm just a little tied up with work at the moment. I have plans to attend a larger auction as soon as I'm able to 👍
Hi Shane, thanks for the good content. Where was this auction?

They grow thick hair in the winter amd then shed it in the summer.

Those prices is shocking. Definitely worth taking your animals to a bigger auction. Even compared to Namibia its bad.
Prices are down due to the drought we had last summer. Hopefully it will turn again this season.

At what age is a cow and a bull regarded old and no longer profitable?

Shocking prices, the way in which the final price is close to the auctioneers starting price shows the buyers and auctioneer are in cahoots

Are they any auctions like this in kaz
Srry meant kzn
There will be. Just not sure where. All the towns should have auction facilities.
Dundee holds auctions every Tuesdays(De jager) and every Thursdays(cbd)... Utrecht once a month I think
is the price a final price or they still need to add vat +commission?
Price excludes VAT, unless the seller is not VAT registered. If the seller is VAT registered VAT will be added to the price. Commission is normally paid by the seller
Vat is only added if the seller is vat registered. Commission comes off the selling price.
How can you tell it has a bad udder, and what makes it bad thanx

Nice video where is this auction
Hennenman - Free State.
What's the average profit for the guys who slaughter?
I don't know. There are too many variables. How much feed they need to fatten up, wages, medicine, dewormer etc.
Difficult to answer.
Please go to a larger well supported auction to make a video. This is giving a poor perception of auctions
