You have to remember that there was no benefit of hindsight at the *time*. It was just a good comedy in '84. We were SO spoiled for choice in the 80's, as every single weekend was filled with great movies, we just took a lot of them for granted, considering how few films today are made that even come close to the best or even the mediocre films of that decade.

God, it's crazy to remember that in 1984, it was only 20 years since the Beatles had come to America. Getting old is so bizarre. lol It's like saying the Beatles came to America in 2004. lol

These are THEIR 10 best picks, not everybody else's...it's about personal preferences and tastes, not about what the biggest and most popular movies of the year are...shows like Entertainment Tonight, etc, are for lists like that...something would be definitely wrong in the world if each and every person's lists had the SAME movies on them...variety is everything...

It's actually a Rock and Roll masterpiece, part Bob Fosse, part experimental, and with a killer soundtrack. Plus it might be one of the first films of the New Black Cinema phenomenon. Prince deserved a Best Actor nomination as well as Morris Day best supporting actor.

@@kdohertygizbur because Oscars noms are just for Marlon Brando Dramas? LOL! There's performance achievements in Rock musicals, as well as in Action, Comedy etc. Don't be so closed minded, Prince was insanely good in Purple Rain as an egocentric, tortured Rock poet, BUT let me put it this way: Marlon Brando can't do Bill Murray on Groundhog Day, or can't do Jackie Chan in his Chinese martial arts films, and most of all, Marlon Brando can't do Darlin Nikki like Prince in Purple Rain, I mean, those are also Film performances too.
