It's hard seeing Gene talk about losing 2 hours of his life watching these shitty movies. He probably knew he didn't have too much time left to waste.

    • @blackmumba111

I don’t think Gene would’ve seen watching movies…even bad ones…as a bad thing. He would’ve seen it as a worthwhile past time than warning people not to waste parts of their own lives.

Meh, go back and watch all the other episodes of worst movies of the year. He always said the "these movies robbed us of 2 hours that we're never getting back" line, even as far back as the early 80s. We can't know obviously how he felt at the time but didn't seem like the type of guy who thinks "I don't have too much time left".

I grew up watching these guys, and I didn't remember it feeling so sad back then, probably just because I was a kid. But now, I've just come from watching a few other UA-cam videos from earlier in the show's run, when they were both in their prime, slinging witticisms and wry insight with comfort and ease. To go from that to this is absolutely heartbreaking.

Gene Siskel was a beast. He didn't let something like cancer stop him from doing what he loved. He clearly stared cancer in the face with balls of steel. That's what I call dedication and passion. And the same can be said for Roger Ebert. They lived life to the fullest. Godspeed to both men.

what's the saddest thing is that _Ringmaster_ was made by a very, very talented and intelligent man. and indeed the whole _Jerry Springer Show_ persona was I guess just an act.
and the fact he called the movie and the book it was based on "Ringmaster" is especially sad and sick, because a Ringmaster deals in CIRCUS ANIMALS.
that's how he presented his vision -- that the people on his show were circus performers or animals.

The 1998 remake of Godzilla. I went to see it when it got released. I thought the original movie was much better, even with the primitive special effects and use of an actor in an unconvincing rubber suit.

@@TahiriVeila13ABY He’s done so much worse than that. Armageddon has things to like in it, even if you didn’t. It had entertaining performances, humor, and shocking (for the time) effects. It’s fine to hate it, but it’s still one of the best by far. Deep Impact “even better” than a movie you hate? Whatever that means. It had some great moments, but spent more time failing to be worthwhile or entertaining than its’ competition. The reporter and the kids were a total waste of time, so at least Bay had some humor.

Loved Roger and Gene's original review of Godzilla where they were rather put out that Roland Emerich didn't have Godzilla step on "Mayor Ebert" and his assistant Gene. If you're going to take petty revenge against the critics, DO something with that!
Spice World is what you get when you try to do Help! when you can't sing or act. And Patch Adams proved that Robin Williams' movie shtick playing a character who allegedly learned the benefits of comedy was really getting old by this time. It didn't work with Patch Adams, and it annoyed me to high skies when he used the SAME shtick in Bicentennial Man the following year, which I didn't like on its own "merits."
Ever wonder why the snowman in Jack Frost doesn't exactly look like Michael Keaton? Well, the original choice for the role was George Clooney, so the effects people made the snowman look like Clooney. When Clooney rejected the role, Keaton stepped in, but they didn't have time to fix the snowman's look.

it is astounding to me that the movie Michael Bay made *right before* _Armageddon_ was _The Rock._
it's not that _The Rock_ is some sort of masterpiece - not even a masterpiece action movie - but it's pretty damn solid, save for the racial / homophobic "Wacky Comedy" stuff.
that movie has characters, that movie has something approaching a HEART.
so what happened? I think Michael Bay saw _Titanic_ and he said "I can do that, too, and noisier. watch me."

I love comedy films but I never understood his appeal he's just too much, silly voices, flailing arms, jumping around, creepy laugh.
Even when he was on talk shows he could never answer a question seriously, just the usual manic routine, you get fed up with it because you never got to see the real Robin just the show man.

    • @bijibadness

if you wanna see what some of the Robin Williams hype is about, check out Robin's extended improv with a random audience member's scarf on his appearance on _Inside the Actor's Studio._ there are clips of it, I'm sure.
even if you don't find the jokes amusing, there's not one doubt he's not amazingly talented and creative. improvisational comedy is for most people one of the hardest things of all to pull off for a crowd, and Robin did it effortlessly so, so many times for so, so many years.
it's down to taste, sure, but when he was ON, the man was a total genius.
