  • 2 thumbs up from Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert for The Cotton Club: Francis Ford Coppola's crime-drama film focused on the Harlem Jazz Club of the 1930s called the Cotton Club. Despite the fact that the film was a commercial failure, it is one of my favorite films of the 1980s and the performances of Gregory Hines and Diane Lane among others are spectacular. Highly reccomend it!

I watched the Encore last night and can say its still stands as an amazing achievement. Much maligned since its original release it is in my opinion A undisputed masterpiece.

Somehow despite his harsh criticisms, Siskel placed this on his top 10 list of 1984

Number 3, only behind Once Upon a Time In America and Amadeus.

It's such a shame neither men lived to see the longer cut, The cotton club encore. Thanks for posting.

They took scenes out of it that were very good, though like the one where Cage got shot or the one where Mr Jewett proposed to sell arms to her and the numbers bosses. Those were good scenes and they were left out, as were the additional scenes from the trailer which should’ve been included in. I also didn’t like how they mixed some of the scenes around. The first version had more linear play.

@@roderickstockdale1678 You're so right! I hadn't seen the cotton club encore when I made that comment. Now that I've seen it (and was utterly disappointed by it), I don't think these men missed out on much. There are a couple of good additions, but, too many ommisions (some were just baffling) and other strange choices. Overall, I'll be sticking with the original, underrated classic.

This is absolutely one of my favorite movies of all time. Loved the performances by the Hines Brothers, Larry Marshall who played Cab Calloway and Diane Lane, one of my favorite actresses. Didn't do well at the box office at the time but I really enjoyed this film for the performances and the stories it told about the Cotton Club and that era.

I came for their impressions of The Cotton Club and was dreamily seduced by their depth, passion, and intelligence. I hadn’t forgotten. Roger Ebert is one of my favorite writers, full stop. But I’ve been long enough in the tweets, stories, tags, and one-minute critics (no offense, love your work), that the music of their language took my breath away.

I think the negative stuff involving the making of the film hurt the box office.

I felt that the Cotton Club was all style, no substance; because that was what they put all of their energy into. Richard Gere just didn't work in this film; they presented him as brash, when he just came off as obnoxious and just a little stupid. I blame the script for that as well. Francis Ford Coppola put Way too much energy into the Cotton Club scenes, and not enough into the script to make us care about these characters trying to survive in a mob-ruled corrupt city....

A comment below says: 'all style, no substance' and I agree.... I was left feeling like I shoukd have really enjoyed this film... I thought I did but was left cold. The reason? A lot of design, great music, great period.... Script and story.... not so good.... definitely needed more time.....or something.. I feel that this could have been as good as The Godfather... but just wasnt....

I felt the film wasn't bad, but wasn't good.
    It was interesting.
Good acting, but there wasn't a real story, just scenes put together for characters that made good or bad decisions; there were no stakes.
