Married for 25yrs, together for 29yrs. For the 1st 8yrs my mother-in-law and I didn't get along AT ALL. Then one day I decided; I'm tired of all the fighting and made an conscious effort for us to become closer, get along and just be a happy extended family. And today I don't regret it. My mother-in-law passed away 4 and a half yrs ago and I still miss her, her advice, the stories she used to tell us about when she was young. I just miss that woman so much 🌹😥
I’m glad the male audience member took up for the daughter in law- I was shocked he called her that name and threatened her- he’s lucky it was a different time back then because he would get virtually dragged in these social media streets for coming for a woman like that
@@bg9509 Synquette. was referring to the gentleman of Asian descent who called out the brother-in-law who called Penny (I believe Dee was the mother-in-law) a B_____ and threatened her at the end of his outburst.
When I see someone being quiet in a chair at a gathering, I never assume they are "pouty" or "moody", I see someone shy. If you make a safe space for an introvert, they open up at their own pace. I get the feeling the mother in law was judgemental and chilly from the beginning. How horrific that she (mother in law on stage) had NO problem with her son threatening violence against this woman on national TV. Even in the 80s that threat alone was illegal in many states. That was so disturbing. PS I had the greatest mother in law. She's been gone a year and a half. I miss her every day.
I am so blessed to have the most wonderful Mother-in-law. She was a Preachers Wife for over 50 years. She has the kindest heart and most loving soul. Since our wedding day she has always considered me to be her Daughter.
My mother loves my husband and my MiL loves me. I cannot imagine marrying someone and causing this type of disruption in their lives. I make sure my husband is checking on his mom and we try hard to share our lives with our parents. It’s not difficult or exhausting because everyone knows their place. I didn’t steal anyone’s son. He’s not your man or your property. People need to understand that they serve different functions.
Whew. I can't believe how common this is. I am SO thankful to have an amazing mom AND mother in law!! My husband and I both lucked up with that. I can't imagine it being any other way.
I would never put that type of stress on my sons, as a mom just realize you have to share your son and take a step back. Can you imagine what type of stress he might be under, being in the middle of his wife and his mom.
My mother in law has caused unimaginable pain in my life…my husband only began to see it about 7 year ago…now we have children and I don’t trust her with them
I adored my mother in law. Turns out the didn’t like her son very much so we are divorced but I am still very close to both of his parents. It makes it so much easier for our children.
Bob's mother-in-law is getting most of her information from her daughter. If you go and tell all of your business when you are mad, you'll probably regret it when family members bring it up. Bob looks pretty healthy to me and can do some sort of work. Mama doesn't want her daughter married to a free-loader, but you raised her.
With all due respect, I have to disagree with you on that statement. Not all disabilities are visible. You absolutely cannot judge someone’s disabilities solely on what you can physically see. Also, I didn’t hear anything about the wife working. If he was at home with the kids, there shouldn’t have been any reason that she couldn’t get a job. That would have been two incomes in the house. Even if one of those was a disability check. It’s still a household income. * I would like to add that…. No I am not a disabled person, and I do work two jobs, 7 days a week. So this is not in my own defense. This is just me trying to educate people on invisible disabilities. People with invisible disabilities constantly have to feel judged and made out to be liars, or like they are trying to screw the government. It’s very hurtful to them that they have to feel the need to defend themselves to people that are so close-minded and judgmental just because they can’t physically see their disability.
They should post more videos like this. It’s very important for all of us cause we would learn a lot. Especially now when many people deal with destroyed relationships.
Dr. Phil has some really good shows on meddling in-laws, too. They really make me appreciate and miss my in-laws even more. Even after we divorced, they still treated me like family until the day they died. His siblings do the same. In fact, I just saw my ex brother-in-law yesterday. He gave me the biggest hug. He's visiting my 2 kids and their families plus his brother in the city. He took ALL of us to lunch yesterday and it was also his way to visit with me, too. All of his siblings still treat me as family. I miss my MIL and FIL SO much since they've passed away!! I've been truly blessed!!! 💝
Oooo Gosh, that lady Penny resonated so much with me. My husband’s family literally was so DAMN disappointed when they found out I was pregnant with a girl and made it KNOWN!
My late husband's mother still calls me her daughter in law. It means the world to me. My new boyfriend mother and I get along very well. I grew up without a mother and I am gifted now
You can really see why that man stopped communicating with his family. Has nothing to do with her, they're just trashy people. From that dweeb making threats to MIL playing the kids against each other, it's just trashy. Bet Dee treated her son and stepson like she treats her grandkids.
With this episode airing almost 30 years ago, I must have forgotten how fast-paced The Oprah Show was and how chaotic it can be. So much is left unfinished with very little progress, yet it was still fantastic to bring attention to these topics and at least start the conversations. Oprah must have been exhausted at the end of this particular episode.
Oprah's early shows when she first started out were like this. Almost "Jerry Springer" in nature, but she cleaned them up and made them more classy. Sfter that, her show Exploded!
My late mother-in-law interfered terribly when we first got married in the late seventies. My husband never stood up for me and I had to train him out of being a mummy's boy. When my first child was born she was Granzilla, she used to turn up at my house unannounced first thing in the morning and let herself in with her key and criticise everything I did (she had a full time nanny and never had to raise her three children). I ended putting the chain on the door and leave her trapped outside. She also complained that I didn't go back to work after two weeks as I was taking unpaid maternity leave! She never became a second mother but I put my foot down and she learned to treat me with respect, especially as I have always earned a lot more than my husband. My first mother in law to be I had a very lucky escape from because I did not marry her son, what a battleaxe she was, but the main problem seemed to be that they wanted a girl from a rich family. I am a mother-in-law of two myself now and I stay right out of the way.
I did not have a good relationship with my ex step mother-in-law now I’ve been divorced for eight years and that was long ago but I can learn a lot from this episode my sons only 14 years old but in the future I might be the mother-in-law and I think this show can be a teaching lesson for everybody
I’m not married but I pray that I will meet a man who’s family will embrace me like my family will embrace him. There is nothing more important in my life than being in peace with everyone in my life, living in harmony and drama free.
I’m so glad my MIL is a grown up and treats us like grown ups! Even when she first thought he could do better lol. She gave our relationship a chance to grow and judged our relationship by how happy her son is with me. I love you mom! Even my other MIL and I are still very close.
I loved my mother in law! And I miss her every day! She died unexpectedly! 23 years ago! Hi was looking forward to taking care of her when she got old ! The first time she was going to pick up her brand new grand daughter and keep her for the weekend was the day we buried her! I still cry! My husband still Frys but we tell our daughter all about her! The Aunt that fill her shoes to be our daughters grandma so she would have a grandma was equally wonderful! Until we lost her. When our daughter was 10 I miss both women I've been blessed! But I miss Bonnie and Grace!
My mother in law and I got along all the time. At first, she warmed up to me by showing me my husband's school pics. She was so impressed when I picked him out of first grade class. At that time, she had one other daughter in law who she knew much longer than me, but we hit it off because we both loved her son. At first, I wrote her a letter and told her she did a wonderful job as a mother in raising her son, who was such a good man, and that I would do my utmost to make him happy. our marriage is wonderful, celebrating 35 years this year. Dear mom passed away 2 years ago. I still miss her!
I miss when talks shows were about normal people with real problems. I also liked when the audience was able to voice their thoughts. This I find it much more interesting to watch.
I came into my husband’s life when he was broken & hurt. I was 20 years younger & carefree & fun. She took me in completely, she said she was thankful I loved him so much Everyone else was worried I just wanted husband to pay for school. She knew better. 20 years later, still in love & fun together. She loved me & im so thankful. I still cry we lost her to cancer If we ever had kids we had agreed to name her after his mom & mine.
This makes me feel blessed to have my mother in law. She’s a queen, I love her with my whole heart, she supports me, listens and wipes my many many many tears, held my hand more times than I can count and has told me how much she loves me being with her son. The amount of times she’s thanked me for loving him and treating him well. I couldn’t imagine not having the relationship I have with my mother in law.
I was so blessed with 2 wonderful mother-in-law’s, however I didn’t really have a mom of my own. My own mother was the one playing the favs with her own 5 children and grandchildren. Me and mine where not of the fav group. So I really embraced all of both my married families.♥️
I know why we get our feelings hurt and why we get so disappointed in what others do or don't do. It's because our OWN expectations have not been met. Our egos are soooooooo fragile that they require soothing from someone outside ourselves. I'm speaking from life experience. When I dropped my expectations, my feelings got hurt less and less. II'm not hardened or bitter, just mature enough now to know that others had their own expectations of me that I had not met either. Be okay with yourself and your own decisions throughout life and allow others the same then there will be peace. 🌹
You don't have to be a Ruth and Naomi to be a successful mother and daughter in-law duo, you just have to maintain a balance and serenity in the family, especially for the children's sake. Strong family is foundational to the strong person.
Hearing the Christmas issue the one woman spoke about hit my heart. We live 5 minutes from my in laws and when our youngest was 4 my mother in law wanted us to stay at their home for Christmas Eve but I had spent every holiday with my in laws at their demand and missed my family so I said no, I wanted my girls to wake up on Christmas in their own home. Well on Christmas Eve night as we were leaving my sister in law’s daughters changed into beautiful nightgowns my youngest 4 year old daughter told them their gowns were pretty and they said Grandmom bought them for them. My daughter asked my mother in law where her pretty nightgown was and her response was “oh those are for granddaughters who stay at grandmom’s house for Christmas”. My daughter just cried and cried. Who does that? I have lived this for 33 years. I could go on and on.
My past mother-in-law was the sweetest women who loved me like a daughter. She passed. I miss her. My current one 🙄 She insults me and he don't defend me. I tried getting along with her but I avoid her now.
I am so sorry - once you've had good, it's horrible to see it differently. Your peace comes first and you don't have to subject yourself to disrespect. ;}
I purposely make an effort with my daughter-in-law. She is the Mother of my grandchildren and for that, I will always honor and love her. We do get along and we laugh together. If I have a problem, I talk to my son. I check to see if I had a misunderstanding of a situation. Usually, I misunderstood the situation and then things are fine. I also do not take things so personal. I talk to them several times a day. If I don't call, they actually think something is wrong. Everyone has to make an effort to have a decent relationship.
My mother in law has caused unimaginable pain in my life…I was never good enough for him and she let me know it from the beginning….now I have children and I don’t trust her
Not true. I probably would have felt this way too but both of my parents are toxic. I'm kind to them but they're not capable of liking anyone for their children.
Thank God for Dr.Phil!! This brunette mother in law in the red is a right fighter and if she's still alive I bet she is STILL unhappy and a right fighter!!
It’s fun to see these old Oprah shows at the beginning of her talk show. You can see in the early days how it was modeled after the Phil Donahue show. She did eventually get her own style. Oh my… that 80s hair.
I think she is staying on topic. If you read between the lines when her husband is around she is accepted as the daughter in law but when he is away they show their true selves and shun her. Making her feel as if she does not count in the marriage.
@@jeanogrady9546 my point is talk shows today don’t have audience participation, certainly not as many interruptions as Oprah does. The person comes on to talk about their life and the audience claps or nods, not time for me to talk about my life. I love classic Oprah!
Once upon a time it was a pleasure to watch Oprah who appeared to be more down to earth and treated the people on her show with respect. As she became more famous the success obviously went to her head and I've watched her belittle and demean guests on her show. It takes a very strong person to handle fame and wealth be famous yet keep their feet on the ground and the size of one's head in check.

I think it’s very telling that the husband/son isn’t there when even the brother and sister in law are in the audience.
He married a younger version of his mother. They even have the same voice!!
They resemble each other a great deal, the younger version, the aged version, I saw that right away, highly doubt they'd admit to it,lol
I was thinking the exact saem thing! Shocked the pants off of me!
I just miss that woman so much 🌹😥
Parents should accept that the children are their own people.
I’m glad the male audience member took up for the daughter in law- I was shocked he called her that name and threatened her- he’s lucky it was a different time back then because he would get virtually dragged in these social media streets for coming for a woman like that
I’m confused . Wasn’t he attacking his sister-in-law?
@@bg9509 yes
@@bg9509 Synquette. was referring to the gentleman of Asian descent who called out the brother-in-law who called Penny (I believe Dee was the mother-in-law) a B_____ and threatened her at the end of his outburst.
Penny's MIL saying "the girl" and "the boy" but referring to another child as "my granddaughter", tells me all o need to know about her.
It just means she doesn’t feel close to them and that could be Pennys fault.
This is a good episode! Brings back memories. I miss The Oprah Winfrey show. I used to come home from school and watch Oprah at 4:00. 😄
Yes it was the best, I was like don't call me, I'm watching Oprah. I actually learned alot from her shows!
It was nice, wasn’t it? I always felt I learned from Oprah’s as well.
I miss her too. No matter where I was at or what I was doing I had to be home by 4:00
Mine passed away when my husband was in high school. But thank God my mother absolutely adored my husband, before she passed away🥺.
The lady in the audience who’s husband is away in the Perian Gulf War…I hope things turned out good for her and her husband.
she seemed like a very sweet person
@@Janine11155 AGREE 100%!
We all have these types of people in our families.
PNW
I don’t believe she is the problem I think it’s the mother in law she’s very cold, stand-offish and narcissistic.
The stepbrother is hilarious 🤣🤣
😅🤣😂
I like this 80/90s ladies hairstyle...reminds me much about Princess Diana 👸
What a wild time 🤣🤣🤣 these audience members are off the chain lol
Boy that opening slapped me right back in time!!
My favourite Oprah opening!
No matter what color clothing Oprah wears, she looks beautiful.
She is a beautiful woman. She has been so profoundly instrumental in my healing. I am extremely grateful to her. ❤️🙏
I grew up without a mother and I am gifted now
The way the step brother hopped out of the audience chileeee 🤣
I was like tf
@@krystingrant6292 Dude was definitely charged up lmfao
He scared me I was like wtf 😳 where did he come from
He was as goofy as they get lol
You can really see why that man stopped communicating with his family. Has nothing to do with her, they're just trashy people. From that dweeb making threats to MIL playing the kids against each other, it's just trashy. Bet Dee treated her son and stepson like she treats her grandkids.
I'm loving Oprah's hair and makeup
It was ALWAYS on point
The intro music, the clothes, the hair, OMG it's phenomenal!!! I miss the old days
My former MIL was an enabler. It didn't matter how much he battered me, he had a good reason.
It aired OVER 30 years ago, NOT almost.
«He said I don’t eat at other peoples houses, well why did he come then?» 😆 I agree with her though, what a strange thing to say
My ex mother in law didn't think I was good enough for her son... and even have the 38 years I had with him, that underlying rift was never mended...
Thanks OWN team! Please keep these retro episodes going!
I miss when talks shows were about normal people with real problems. I also liked when the audience was able to voice their thoughts. This I find it much more interesting to watch.
I hate how funny this episode is 😂😂😂😂 I know it was suppose to be serious, but it’s like working in a daycare 😩😂
The angry outbursts has me dying
I came into my husband’s life when he was broken & hurt. I was 20 years younger & carefree & fun.
She took me in completely, she said she was thankful I loved him so much
Everyone else was worried I just wanted husband to pay for school. She knew better.
20 years later, still in love & fun together.
She loved me & im so thankful. I still cry we lost her to cancer
If we ever had kids we had agreed to name her after his mom & mine.
Now see this is what I want I come broken and hurt abandoned twice motherless and fatherless as well.
U r worthy of love 💕
This makes me feel blessed to have my mother in law. She’s a queen, I love her with my whole heart, she supports me, listens and wipes my many many many tears, held my hand more times than I can count and has told me how much she loves me being with her son. The amount of times she’s thanked me for loving him and treating him well. I couldn’t imagine not having the relationship I have with my mother in law.
You are so blessed. ❤️
I was so blessed with 2 wonderful mother-in-law’s, however I didn’t really have a mom of my own. My own mother was the one playing the favs with her own 5 children and grandchildren. Me and mine where not of the fav group. So I really embraced all of both my married families.♥️
My mother and father in law were so good to me. I miss them. I was truly blessed.
I would love to know where they all are now
I know why we get our feelings hurt and why we get so disappointed in what others do or don't do. 🌹
Amen sister!
You don't have to be a Ruth and Naomi to be a successful mother and daughter in-law duo, you just have to maintain a balance and serenity in the family, especially for the children's sake. Strong family is foundational to the strong person.
Who tells a little girl (their own granddaughter) that they don't like them because she's an introvert?!
My mother in law was an angel, she’s by God’s side now😔, bless her soul🙏🏻💝
The first two on stage look like mother and daughter! They look so much alike.
I’m only 5 minutes in… and it’s so chaotic
Oprah gave good shows back in the day!!!
My past mother-in-law was the sweetest women who loved me like a daughter. She passed. I miss her.
My current one 🙄
She insults me and he don't defend me. I tried getting along with her but I avoid her now.
It is really hurtful. Peace 👏👏
I am so sorry - once you've had good, it's horrible to see it differently. Your peace comes first and you don't have to subject yourself to disrespect. ;}

Penny wanted to swing on everybody in the room 😂 sis is fed up
I keep a picture of mine on the mantelpiece...keeps the kids away from the fire...

As a parent I’m going to tell my children the bitter truth, period.
I’ve been divorced for 2 yrs , still close to his mom and my sisters/brother in law . Never had an issue with the moms
My mother in law has caused unimaginable pain in my life…I was never good enough for him and she let me know it from the beginning….now I have children and I don’t trust her
I would never date someone that did not like my mom or dad! It just does not make any sense!
Not true. I probably would have felt this way too but both of my parents are toxic. I'm kind to them but they're not capable of liking anyone for their children.
@@aprilchow-chee5281 Is it one of those no one will ever be good enough for my child sort of situation?

I love my MIL and we get along just fine.. I call her for advice, just to say hello or love you.. I feel fortunate 😳
Accept the partner your child has chosen. None of my business who my sons marry. I will love them because I love my sons!
And that’s just it! If your child is happy, just be happy and supportive for your child!
Oprah has said there would be no Oprah show without the Phil Donahue show
At 2:03 Oprah asks "how long has this been?"
I was almost waiting for the answer to be something like:
"since they got married - 3 days ago"
Durn...did he say 'Your butt is mine'?! WOW
Darling Oprah...I just love, love her.
Happy 68th birthday, honey.

This show is so chaotic but I love it lmao! That random lady interjecting talking about her husband in the war at 21:00 no one is staying on topic
😂🤣😂
I can't wait for that part.😂😂
I think she is staying on topic. If you read between the lines when her husband is around she is accepted as the daughter in law but when he is away they show their true selves and shun her. Making her feel as if she does not count in the marriage.
@@jeanogrady9546 my point is talk shows today don’t have audience participation, certainly not as many interruptions as Oprah does. The person comes on to talk about their life and the audience claps or nods, not time for me to talk about my life. I love classic Oprah!
Omg, girl, you read my mind
Once upon a time it was a pleasure to watch Oprah who appeared to be more down to earth and treated the people on her show with respect.
As she became more famous the success obviously went to her head and I've watched her belittle and demean guests on her show.
It takes a very strong person to handle fame and wealth be famous yet keep their feet on the ground and the size of one's head in check.
I agree
She wanted her son to marry a Filipino doctor?
…oddly specific
And her son didn’t even graduate high school lol
Lol I think maybe one of his exes might’ve been a Filipino doctor
I’ve only ever met Filipino nurses and they are wonderfully kind and hard working.
I think it's because at one point he was dating one.
