- Many thanks to Sean Hernandez @now2eternityproductions for this amazing sneak peak at our upcoming documentary.
In this special episode of Adventures of Fascinated By Fungi, we are on the hunt for the elusive morel. A mushroom universally regarded as one of the tastiest in existence, morels (Morchella species) are also very important for habitat restoration after fire. Along with other Ascomycete fungi, they are first on the scene after a fire to breakdown toxic compounds, kicking off the rejuvenation of the forest floor.
Along with my friends Liz and Chris, we hunt for morels in a second year burn zone, starting to recover after burning in 2021. The prevailing forest management practices have worked to prevent fire, but burning periodically is a necessary and important cycle of these ecosystems. Climate change means more fires are on their way, whether we like it or not. The hope is that by changing our practices and paying more attention to nature, that we can mitigate some of the worst side effects of wildfires.

Hey Gordon, Sharon here. This was an absolutely beautiful & very interesting video about burn morels. I loved the cinematography, the music & the insight into how they thrive in burn areas. I'm looking forward to the full documentary once it's released!
