So yesterday April 5th my daughter was walking in the woods at Bears Den in New Salem Massachusetts and in the middle of a brook there was a rock with a orange mushroom growing on it and she took a picture of it and sent it to me. I was surprised to see a mushroom this time of year and I was thinking that it was way to early and cold for a mushroom to grow. I was wondering if you have seen or heard of this happening or if its a rare occurrence.

There are 5 different psilocybin mushrooms in massachusetts! One is brown (common name is banded mottlegill), one is orange (laughing Jim), one is yellow, and the last one is liberty caps

I found a banded mottlegill yesterday in my compost pile! You have to check my spelling but it's called panaeolus cintulus. Again likely spelled wrong

that little velvety guy at a glance it looks like Leccinum rubropunctum Peck (Boletus rubropunctus). give it a sniff and if it smells like an ash tray then thats your guy.
