Scotty Kilmer... Thanks scotty. I'm writing this just as I'm about to leave mechanic shop. Clunk was found to be front lower control arm bushings... He is asking for rear and front bushings $1800 parts and labor. I only hear clunk on the front. Anyways, he said parts alone are 800 dollars... Am I being ripped?
Scotty saves the average person thousands on car repairs. To replace two lower control arms at a dealership runs close to $1,000.I have a lot of respect for Scotty and his car wisdom.

Here's a tip. Find a performance or custom car garage. They usually do absolutely everything in one place. I find they often take the most pride in their work, and are not just trying to get cars in and out as quickly as possible. If you don't know where, ask someone with a nice custom car next time you're at a gas station or something where they get their work done.

It may have been mentioned, but before the front and rear bolts for the new arm are tightened, you should put your jack under the ball joint and jack the suspension up until the car *just* begins to lift off the jackstands (yes, this is an actual factory recommended procedure). That way, you've got the suspension back to normal ride height before you torque the fasteners. If you don't do this, there is a real possibility of the bushings failing prematurely, as they will be put into a bind as soon as the weight of the vehicle is on them.
I had to do just that on my 2010 Legacy. The car has body cladding making it impossible to do anything if the wheel is on the ground. I tried the ramps but there was not much clearance to turn the wrench. I ended up removing the wheel, putting the car on a jackstand, loading the suspension by jacking up the control arm under the ball joint until the car lifted off the jack stand ever so slightly (about 2 mm off the jack stand as noticed toward the front of the jack stand support plate). I tightened the front bushing. I hope this did the trick and the bushing is properly loaded because I don't want to replace them anytime soon.

either you got a wrong size ball joint, or you have to push it up further to get in place to bolt on (I use a jack under it to push it up in such cases.) Realize many cheap aftermarket parts are often the wrong size if made in china

I'm glad you trust your car jack! I recommend additional axle stands while yanking parts around, with your head underneath hundreds of kilos of car....
In '76, I bought a '75 Chevy Monza from a Chevy Dealer. The car had 12K miles on it and looked brand new. After a couple of weeks, I heard a clunking sound whenever I stopped. I checked the suspension and everything looked fine but I did notice overspray under the hood. I suspect the car had been in a collision.. After 3 years, a friend of mine wanted to trade my Moza for his '68 Vette with a blown engine. We nade the trade but I warned him of the clunk. Eventually, the doors got harder to open so he lifted the car and discovered the subframe was separating from the body.

tighten the fan belt on the power steering or replace it. Tapping can be many things, jack it up and pull off the wheels on the area that is making the noise and check for worn parts.
if it's stripped,no socket will fit now. You can buy special sockets to remove stripped nuts though, go to any auto parts store and buy a set, they come in handy if you fix much.
Scotty always teaches well but some of his videos show no axel stand , that's a shame because one has to think that you are showing people who don't have much idea of safety while working under cars . NEVER WORK UNDER A VEHICLE WITHOUT AT LEAST ONE AXLE STAND NEVER TRUST A JACK EVER .
Yes that def. applies to everyone in the world except Scotty Kilmer if the car falls off the jack when he s working on it he would be able to slide a jack stand in there fast enough because life moves abt 300x slower through his eyes because his heart beat is at around 10000 bpm.😂. He has the best car diy videos on here. Please keep the videos coming Scotty.
Everyone gets older and reverts to critiquing the things they are well versed in. He's not working on cars anymore but still has a wealth of information that the world can benefit from. Also, to stay relevant he would have to learn about new cars that resonate with people today.
many things can do that, but worn ball joints are common on that model, jack it up and pull on the wheel and see if you can feel and see play on suspension parts like the ball joint
Oh come on! It's not THAT hard! (I'm being mostly sarcastic BTW) Just did the upper and lower control arms on both sides of my truck, as well as the stabilizer links (bad bushings and joints). Sure, it took a few days to complete, but it wasn't particularly hard. Granted, having proper tools made it a breeze. I remember doing the alternator in my '02 MPV a couple of years ago, and that was a real pain. Had to take apart the passenger side wheel well just to get to the damn part. What should have been a 5 or so hour job, at most, turned into a two day job with help from multiple people.
Scotty, my steering wheel keeps shaking left and right when I drive, and when I let go of the wheel it immediately goes to the right. I recently had my brake pads and rotors replaced, and got a new wheel bearing and hub installed on my passengers side. But that's the side it's bearing to the right.... I'm going nuts with this bro. It's a 2012 ford focus. Please help me brother :-(
awesome man, looks simple enough. Took it for an alignment and they said i had to replace the arms or ill be useless. showed me it had some play but each is 250 with labor total of over 500 being a student and with a car thats cheap ill DIY.
some people are anal safety junkies, go ahead and put stands on everything. I've been doing it 45 years, never had one fall on me yet. I do use them on long term jobs when really needed though.
you might not have needed them, but your teaching bad and very unsafe practice, what about if someone copies you - does not use a stand and it kills them?
I jacked up a Chevy Nova at a junk yard once to pull the drive shaft... crawled under, had wrong wrench, crawled back out from under car to get the correct wrench.... after I stood up, the car fell...the old jack let go... ... no wheels on the car.. fell flat on the ground....I use jackstands *all the time* now.
Thanks! :) I'll watch that video. I forgot to tell you that I talked to another mechanic and he told me that the steering/rack assembly is bad, and it needs to be fixed.
Thanks a lot for answering so quickly and doing the video! Interesting enough it didn't show up on the search but it did show up on the recommendation list watching the video "how to safely fix your own car". Keep on your great work!

some mechanic you went to. see my video "finding the source of car noises" and have a machine like that hooked up to find the culprit, it's the only way that always finds em.
tons o things can do that, sway bar bushings, exhaust clunking, try jacking it up and pulling to make noise. If not, try my video "finding the source of car noises'
Hi Scotty, I agree with you. I've taken the dealer mechanic out on the road for a ride along and he's heard the sound I was talking about. I too believe they don't want to fix it because of the warranty. How do I force them to make the repair? What kind of leverage would you use? Thanks for your reply. It really means a lot.
weather, driving schedule (in town is crappy mileage, highway is better), and many other things effect gas mileage. summer will get better gas mileage than winter, for example due to more heat.
Thank you Scotty I a told a so called Family mechanic that's what was wrong with me car. I payed over $450.00 For struts and my car still was doing the same thing.
any worn bushing or part can do that, and they only show play when badly worn as the car will clunk then. See my video "finding the source of car noises" and have that done to find the noise though, that always works
Hi Scotty Thanks for doing these videos. They really help out a lot. I have a truck with a clunk. After viewing your video I check the suspension and driveshafts. There doesn't seem to be any play, but it still clunks when I let off the gas, and the trans downshifts. Brought it to the dealer, and they said everything is in spec.. I'm not sure what to do. It's annoying and I need to get it fixed. Truck is still under warranty.

Tapping can be many things, jack it up and pull off the wheels on the area that is making the noise and check for worn parts.
no feelings at all, I've never worked on one yet.
it sat 16 years in a garage, now it doesn't smoke when I was done. I liked the smoke for the intro, added a vintage element
SCOTTY - YOU ROCK - and thanks... ;-P
if it's stripped,no socket will fit now. You can buy special sockets to remove stripped nuts though, go to any auto parts store and buy a set, they come in handy if you fix much.
Safety first scotty where are the jack stands.
Scotty K is the MAN!
scotty , what coffee do you drink?
Mathieu Mansire castrol lol
10w-40
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Some folks have a natural enthusiasm for life they don't necessarily need stimulants beyond their normal passion.
lmao!
I learned a lot. From your videos thanks Mr Scotty
Shaking the car like that with a wheel off and no jack stands, Scotty come on! 🤭
He's clueless
He’s an expert he knows how much it takes to make the car fall down he wasn’t born yesterday
Jonathan Gomez very true
Yes that def. applies to everyone in the world except Scotty Kilmer if the car falls off the jack when he s working on it he would be able to slide a jack stand in there fast enough because life moves abt 300x slower through his eyes because his heart beat is at around 10000 bpm.😂. He has the best car diy videos on here. Please keep the videos coming Scotty.
they don't often need an alignment, this one didn't. As long as you use quality parts they often fit perfectly.
Would jacking the car up only on the side being replaced cause an alignment issue?
so on this vehicle you have to buy the whole a frame? if it has a worn ball joint ?
yep
Lower control arm, you can buy a new one with the bushings and ball joint already installed cheaper than buying just the bushings.
Can't go wrong with good ol' Scotty
When this guy used to put out useful videos.
Make car videos for 11+ years and then comment this again😂
Everyone gets older and reverts to critiquing the things they are well versed in. He's not working on cars anymore but still has a wealth of information that the world can benefit from. Also, to stay relevant he would have to learn about new cars that resonate with people today.
many things can do that, but worn ball joints are common on that model, jack it up and pull on the wheel and see if you can feel and see play on suspension parts like the ball joint
Oh it is that easy? I started this process in my garage 3 days ago and now I'm wondering how do I take this car to a mechanic, UNNHHHHH....
Find a mobile mechanic
what happened? u couldn't do u it?
This comment hit soooo hard and truuuuueee!!! Now wondering how much a tow will cost Ahahaha 🤣🤣
Oh come on! It's not THAT hard! (I'm being mostly sarcastic BTW)
Just did the upper and lower control arms on both sides of my truck, as well as the stabilizer links (bad bushings and joints).
What should have been a 5 or so hour job, at most, turned into a two day job with help from multiple people.
check to see if the valve covers are lekaing oil on the exhaust, and also check for coolant leaks there by pressure testing the cooling system
Please help me brother :-(
I'm faster than a speeding bullet, so MUCH faster than gravity.
Ur pretty awesome actually
awesome man, looks simple enough.
I was working under a car and a customer came along and twisted the jack handle lowering the car. Almost lost my head.
you might not have needed them, but your teaching bad and very unsafe practice, what about if someone copies you - does not use a stand and it kills them?
I jacked up a Chevy Nova at a junk yard once to pull the drive shaft... crawled under, had wrong wrench, crawled back out from under car to get the correct wrench.... after I stood up, the car fell...the old jack let go... ... no wheels on the car.. fell flat on the ground....I use jackstands *all the time* now.
Thanks! :) I'll watch that video.
I forgot to tell you that I talked to another mechanic and he told me that the steering/rack assembly is bad, and it needs to be fixed.
Buy some jack stands, im suprise your still alive crawling under cars with just a jack holding it up!
He didn't crawl under it.
Opinions are like assholes everyone's got one.
i bought one arm, how much would the mechanic charge to replace it?
Do you know how much it was or did you do yourself?
U serve a 1000 comments scotty !! 🙏🏽 always good videos! 💯💯
Thanks a lot for answering so quickly and doing the video! Interesting enough it didn't show up on the search but it did show up on the recommendation list watching the video "how to safely fix your own car". Keep on your great work!
Scotty, i dont own a car but i allways enjoy your excellent self help tutorials :-)
When "you" are undoing say a trackrod end nut and after a few hits with the hammer you often do a quick edit/cut, are you swearing between cuts or did the nut not play the game for the filming lol :-)
Your kindness is appreciated.
I get em off with a big impact wrench, but using a long cheater bar and a pipe works too
some mechanic you went to. see my video "finding the source of car noises" and have a machine like that hooked up to find the culprit, it's the only way that always finds em.
tons o things can do that, sway bar bushings, exhaust clunking, try jacking it up and pulling to make noise. If not, try my video "finding the source of car noises'
Hi Scotty,
I agree with you. I've taken the dealer mechanic out on the road for a ride along and he's heard the sound I was talking about. I too believe they don't want to fix it because of the warranty. How do I force them to make the repair? What kind of leverage would you use?
Thanks for your reply. It really means a lot.
well, if it only does it then, I would assume so. But why are you putting it in neutral in the first place?
weather, driving schedule (in town is crappy mileage, highway is better), and many other things effect gas mileage. summer will get better gas mileage than winter, for example due to more heat.
Thank you Scotty I a told a so called Family mechanic that's what was wrong with me car. I payed over $450.00
For struts and my car still was doing the same thing.
no,I put it back exactly the same and it tracked fine.
didn't need it in this case, the part was exactly the same size and it doesn't pull or shake at highway speeds.
any worn bushing or part can do that, and they only show play when badly worn as the car will clunk then. See my video "finding the source of car noises" and have that done to find the noise though, that always works
one of the nicest videos so far!
Great Show Scotty.
That looks soo easy. Great video Scotty, you always explain really well In a short amount of time.
I LOVE ALL YOUR CAR TIPS. YOU REALLY KNOW ABOUT CARS. GOD BLESS YOU!!!
I have seen any videos about how to replace a lower control arm for a 2008 pt cruiser on your channel
injectors could only suck air if the seals on the injectors where they snap into the manifold are leaking. Spray carb cleaner by the suspected leakers and if the idle goes whacky, that's it.
Thanks man, been an elusive problem for a while, and I've always been curious. I'll fix it myself!
