Something I really like about Shadow of Mordor is rather you`re either a fan of Lord of the Rings or not the game itself is too much fun and really it can stand on it own without that much knowledge of the franchise.
Yeah, that's very much the joy of it - you can just jump right in and even if you've never seen/read any of the source material you're still gonna have a good time :)
I couldn't give a fuck about lord of the rings stuff but I picked this game up for Xbox One based solely on the nemesis system and it's become amongst my favorites since pretty much
Imagine how much of a breeze the events of LOTR would have been if Talion came across the ring instead of Frodo and proceeded to simply walk into mordor and kick ass
I started to play Middle Earth Shadow Of Mordor Xbox One last year and i loved it so much and it was so much fun. The Nemesis system is so cool and the combat is so badass and fluid like in the Batman Arkham games and doing stealthkills is fun and slaying Orcs and Orc Captains is satisfying. The voiceacting and the story was amazing and i love that you can brand Orcs and captains and create your own army 🙂. I have played Shadow Of War and it was also fun . I liked Shadow of Mordor more because of the dark story and Talion was badass and how he spread fear amongst Orcs being called The Gravewalker.
This is such a great game. It can be as hard as you want it or just a fun beat em up slasher with lots of potential to grow and use all the various moves. When captains get too strong you can just wait for an ambush, a riot, or dominate and command another captain to betray them and then jump into the fight to take over and kill or dominate the rival.
"One does not simply walk into mordor...you wraith strike through mordor slaughtering all who dare cross your path, leaving a trail of orcish blood, entrails and heads as you spike the ring into mount doom middle finger in the air"
I bought this game because it was $5 on GOG, conveniently after playing Arkham Knight again. My god is this game fun. I cant wait to play the second. Must say that this game feels timeless.
just got the game. been thinking on it for a while and it went on sale. i then looked up whether it truly was worth it. you have convinced me, and thank you for this video
I've read mostly all of Tolkien's work, and I still enjoyed The Rings of Power very much. I don't care if it's not accurate to the lore, I just love seeing some of my favorite characters going on new adventures that I've never read about. If I had it my way I'd rather have a show about The Children of Hurin or Beren and Luthien, or about other conflicts with Morgoth in the 1st age. But, The Rings of Power had enough references to things that only Tolkien scholars are aware of that I felt satisfied. Honestly, it's a fresh take on a story that I've read over and over again, and I appreciate that it still managed to surprise me despite my in-depth knowledge of the history of Arda.
Awesome video man! Agreed with almost everything you said. It's funny, I've been binging the shit out of this and Shadow of War for the past few months. Still not even remotely sick of either of them. Also didn't know you were as big of a Tolkien fan. I've been obsessing over it over the course of the past year because of Battle For Middle Earth. 110% reccomend that game if you even slightly like RTS games. ;) Keep up the great work dude.
Thank you my dude! I'm a much bigger RTS fan than I let on, so Battle for Middle Earth I & II is definitely up there for the future - although I must admit I'm more curious about covering LOTR: The Third Age next / when I finally can >:D
@@BadGhosts Right on man! BFME Anthology (even tho it's basically 3 games, idc) is my favorite RTS ever. It's so good, and they capture the perfect feeling of the battles you see in the movies. The mod "Age Of The Ring" does an even better job with how huge the armies get. If you ever decide to cover those games let me know, I'll help out however I can! I plan on doing BFME reviews at some point too myself. 3rd age is a very underrated game, I'd love to see you cover that one sometime! I actually just got that and played it for the first time a few weeks ago. Man back in the day they really went all out on the IP and I'm so glad they did! Wish we got more after Shadow of War other than cringe of power.
Agreed, they did such a good job of showing how angry and dead set on revenge Talion was. Every stab and slash just felt so angry and relentless, like not only is Talion good at what he does, he ENJOYS it too. It's something Assassin's Creed 3 desperately lacked, Connor was supposed to be angry and seeking revenge for an entire group of people, but his moveset always made him feel like just another assassin.
Really enjoyed the video man. Love this game & the second one. It kinda reminds me of the Prototype games in how you're a brooding overpowered monster. I was wondering if you ever played the Prototype games & if you enjoyed them, but wouldn't be surprised if you didn't
Hey there, thanks for watching! I played the first Prototype - really good fun, but it's been around 15 years since I last played it so I can't remember much aside from how cool the combat could be.
@BadGhosts appreciate the response. And yeah, that's fair. I might be biased from nostalgia, but I'd definitely recommend the second game if you ever get a chance. Relaxing to just shut the brain off & rip through a crowd of people. Hope you have a good week, dude
I waited for the GoG DRM-Free version, so I just bought it this year. Still haven't downloaded and played yet - my free time took a massive hit recently. So, I have this, Dishonored, and the Third-Jagged-Alliance-In-All-But-Name game pending. Any advice on what to prioritize?
Can’t say I’ve played JA3, but personally if I had to choose between Dishonoured and SoM, I’d pick Shadow of Mordor. Tbh I never was a massive Dishonoured fan, - although with that being said I would like to revisit and give it another go, seeing as it’s been close to a decade since I played it.
Post Op : Dishonored was alright, but didn't scratch any itches that Prey didn't handle better. Fake JA3 is a typical turn of the century jank fest : I haven't dug deep enough to know if it's in the Shovelware or Cult Modern Art category. Shadow of Mordor was fun, too easy, poorly paced overall but with good moment to moment engagement. I'd probably recommend Hand Of Fate over it, but I'm glad for your recommendation, I enjoyed my time with it.
Even though I am a little late to comment this, hear me out: I barely have 110 hours total across all my 3 playthroughs of this game because it´s just too easy. I never had a nemesis and at no point did any warchief/captain kill me more than 2 times. While I agree that the gameplay is absolutely fantastic, I do question the progression and power balance systems a lot. I wish I had an arch nemesis or any meaningful rivalry with an uruk but the game mechanics are far too exploitable, far too forgiving and anyone with a head on their shoulders will use them to the fullest. The same goes for shadow of war... I am going on 200 hours ON BRUTAL DIFFICULTY and have yet to find an actual nemesis. I love the games and would give them a 9/10! But the simple fact that I can´t create any individual storylines with an enemy drops it down to a 7 for me. I would like to also point out the video that whitelight made on SOM, highlighting this exact criticism. Great video bad ghosts and thank you for reading!
@@rohansensei5708 In case of gaming in general, I would totally agree with you. However in the case of SOM it is very necessary! You miss out on core components of the gameplay loop simply by being to good at it here. that is not good at all. I wish I could have a real nemesis, a foe that would kill or tease me over and over. it did not happen and thats a shame. major flaw IMO.
We cant get a SoW2, a sequel to the greatest book adaptation in gaming history, but we can get a PS3 Smegul Ratchet and Clank, with just Ratchet. Jesus. SoW is my second fackrite hack and slash of all time. DMC 5 BAIRELY beats it. The Nemisis system is the greatest use of processing power since the invention of the dedicated video and sound cards. I wish you allowed Super Thanks. This game deserves all the love possible. We NEED A SEQUEL TO FIX THE ENDING.
And War is somehow even better, although not a perfect sequel it’s hard for me to go back to Mordor after playing War. I do wish parkour was as more focused on but since you can dash up anything and double jump you feel less like an assassin and more like a spider man without the webs (which is still fun but doesn’t feel as cinematic). And I do think the overall art style in Mordor is better but you can’t deny War has better level variety. It’s identical to Doom 2016 to Eternal. The first had a more focused deep look but the sequel was more dull overall but actually had real levels that weren’t just Wasteland A and Wasteland B
If Rings of Power didn't suck I don't think there would be so much whining about lore breaking elements, it's because Shadow of Mordor is such a good game we can overlook some of it's missteps.
Not sure if I’m even remotely close to being accurate but I thought you would’ve compared lotr to Harry Potter I mean they both have objects that basically secure the bad guys immense power they need friends help to keep them going and both involve some form of magic
The problem is that rings of power tries to masquerade as cannon. SOM has never claimed to be so. It was a spin off from the beginning. So it’s a different dynamic
Not sure yet - my next Lord of the Rings review is likely to be The Third Age when I finally get around to it, I've got a few people telling me I need to play Shadow of War so it'll probably happen eventually.
I just bought my first gpu ever and tried it on a game I had wanted to play 4 ever: Witcher 3, so I bought it immediately, started playing and... I couldn't even force myself to finish that garbage, what a letdown. So I needed something good asap to make me forget, luckily I had also bought Shadow of Mordor. I didn't have much faith in it but that did not matter I needed something, anything, because I was so disappointed by the other "game", so I start playing SoM and holy sh*t! it's soo GOOD!!! I'm so happy about this game I completely forgot about the other one and stayed up late just killing orcs, no quest or nothing I just love it, it's so addictive!!! You portrayed that feeling very well in this video, so congrats!
The story was great and that is for me and also do play the next part of the Shadow of Mordor, you will see something really great...ever more better than this one.
Well the guy in this video is playing on PC so it’s at 60 fps minimum and it’s more than likely 4k. So the game doesn’t look anywhere near this good on ps4 or Xbox 1
If you don't enjoy free flow combat games, this game is boring. I feel the same about Dark Souls games, I'd just change the button masher to underwater slow.

Thats very true I’m loving it , but i don’t even have any interest in LOTR
that beginning montage instantly sold me
Imagine how much of a breeze the events of LOTR would have been if Talion came across the ring instead of Frodo and proceeded to simply walk into mordor and kick ass
it would be great but it would be another character
One does not simply walk into Mordor.
Also great voice acting. Celebrimbor's voice still sends shivers down my spine!
Yeah I have no gripes with the voice acting, honestly. It's more the script/characterization where I lost interest.
Alistair Duncan killed it like Talion kills Uruks. FORFIET YOUR MIND!
SUFFER ME NOW!!!
EDWENNO OGWATH!!
Also the sound desing is amazing in this game. When you leap or do a flury kill the game just hits you with awesome sound effects.

Thanks so much! I'll probably get around to it sooner or later, got a few other LOTR games I want to cover too

I need to catch up on the Arkham series. I played the hell out of the first two, need to check out Origins and Knight.
just got the game. been thinking on it for a while and it went on sale. i then looked up whether it truly was worth it. you have convinced me, and thank you for this video

I won't lie, getting to turn literally every graphics setting up to 'Ultra' was ridiculously satisfying.
And it only took me eight years haha
15:39 ah yes, Dragon Ball Z Budokai 2 opening soundtrack, good times
I mostly play SoM because I am yearning for good Assassin's Creed
And I got one with SoM

Seems like Rings of Power was so awful that I learned it existed solely through this video
Up to now im playing it on my ps5 using ps4 cd far more better than gollum game

I'm gonna be honest I actually liked it more than shadow of war. Mainly for the fact that captains were weaker
