FINALLY got to watch this after playing the remake, as I knew nothing about the story. I’m extremely biased, but, fantastic stuff here. I know it’s been years since you’ve posted this, but very well done. 🖤
The Black Goat I think is meant to be BOTH a religious and lovecraftian refrence. The game has a lot of discussions around religion and Mae is kind of Agnostic through the game. She sometimes sees the point in religion and other times questions it. You can kind of view the Cat as Mae's idea of "God" and the Black Goat as Mae's idea of a "Devil". Whether or not they are real is less relevant, than the impact they have on Mae and her views of religion and faith.
I feel like SOM is better but im so confused to which one i should put my all into
My favourite vn is called echo hy echo project
If you can stomach the extreme graphic nature of subahibi, it is one of the best games I’ve ever played
Visual Novels are to me a simple concept, yet it eludes so many. They are fundamentally a form of writing that takes the visual and sound support videogames have, plus their interactivity, to tell stories, possibly some that use these feature to craft an experience impossible in other medium. They are, at the end of the day, interactive novels with music and art. The real question, if you ask me, it's how many have such a powerful on some people. The easy answer is the interactivity, yes, but it's not only that IMO. The very structure of a well crafted Visual Novel allows a written story to be more than what it could be otherwise. There is a reason why cinema isn't just theater actors playing on a stage while they are recorded. Cinema allows the director to SPECIFICALLY craft an experience: one specific take of the actors playing is used, with specific angles, with a certain music and sound design, with an editing of the cuts that conveys a certain meaning. Similalry, VN can use art and music to direct the imagination and emotional state of the reader, to craft a very specific image in their mind. And when you add the interaction element, if the player is immersed, it becomes much more personal. There are several experiences I won't ever forget that came from VNs, but the one above them all is probably starting some random day in the middle of the story of Va11HallA and not even thinking about the protagonist dropping her """catchphrase""". Imaging her saying that "Time to mix drinks and change lives" had become such a spontaneous thought that seeing her do something else as the day started surprised me. I was so immersed in her PoV that I felt her feeling bad was seriously surprising to me
Is there any plans for a stalker 2 vr mod????
Which one to buy SOM or SOW?
Personally I'd start with Shadow of Mordor, but a friend of mine swears by Shadow of War.
I just realized the 3 suffering in SH2 (James, Angela and Eddie) all murdered someone. I’m not sure if Eddie killed his bully or not. But it seems about the self pain you go through when you hurt others.
When James yells at Eddy in the bowling alley and tells him how he could let Laura go because there are so many monsters around. Even if monsters do not exist to Eddy the point would still stand, so he would not think that was odd of James to say that. She would probably be safer with the real monsters of Silent hill, than the other types of monsters out there.
Damn now I want to sit and play VNs all weekend... I was so excited when i saw this video pop up in my feed, so i waited until i knew i had time to just sit and watch uninterrupted, cos i knew you were going to transport me to other worlds. I do love hearing you talk about VNs cos you have such a clear passion for them which is infectious honestly. Looking forward to the next one! It's great to see videos from you whenever they pop up 😄
Oh and as another note - I'm really glad you had the courage to put your all into this video, I know it's not easy and takes a looooot of time, and sometimes it can feel like speaking into a void, but yeah this was a great video. Keep it up!
Thanks so much for watching! Always a treat to see you enjoying the videos :)
Is it me or shadow of mordor feels graphically better than shadow of war
Well the guy in this video is playing on PC so it’s at 60 fps minimum and it’s more than likely 4k. So the game doesn’t look anywhere near this good on ps4 or Xbox 1
Yup - I played this on PC with most graphics set to highest and it looked fantastic.
To me maria is probably a version of mary before she got sick.i lost my wife Three years ago and everytime i think of her i remember her when we first met .
I played Bad x Faith last weekend, still haven’t recovered.
Let's be honest, the script and voices aren't so great. Your video is good and very enjoyable to watch. But I found you're trying too hard rationalize the below average voice acting and script.
❤
There was yet another Silent Hill 2 essay here. It's gone now
immediately looked up those on the list of visual novels in the description, and though there are a couple title errors (e.g. "step by step" is actually "step by little step"), i managed to find all of them, except F0ll0w3r. do you happen to still remember what game that referred to, and where you found it?
Hey there - thanks for pointing out the typos, I've fixed Step By Little Step (I have no idea how I missed that...) F0110w3r can be found on Itch.io: lim3wir3d.itch.io/f0110w3r
4:55 the review actually starts
I don't see a Silent Hill analysis video on your channel.
Will you be doing a video on the SH2 remake?❤ I’m really curious what you think of it
Thanks for watching! It's going to be a while before it drops (as the script is looking fairly lengthy), but I'm currently working on a video for the remake - aiming to have it released by Christmas at the latest!
@@BadGhosts awesomeee can’t wait, I love your stuff and your perspective on games 😃
Awesome review, Id like to see your take on the remake!!
Thanks for watching! I'm currently working on a video for the remake, it's unlikely to be a short video so I'm aiming to have it released by Christmas at the latest.
@@BadGhostsI’ve watched your amazingly insightful analysis of SH2 several times over the years (in fact, it’s my favorite one on UA-cam), and I’m stoked you’re releasing one on the remake! I really hope it delivered for you, and overall you were satisfied with it (as SH2 is my favorite game ever as well and it means a lot to me too).
i hope one day i can make a visual novel that could get its own feature in a lovingly crafted video essay like this. your summer of Off Day absolutely made me sob. hit close to home.
Thank you for watching - and for the kind words!
no umineko = dont worth watching
Wow, there's like... 2 jp vns in here lole
This was beautiful, I actually cried at the end, so...👍
Very good video, the part about off day really resonated with me personally. Thank you for making this!
Thanks for watching!
So… *have* you had a romantic existential crisis with the Princess yet, though? Has she stopped your heart? Stabbed you to death? Swallowed you whole? Stolen your body? Have you seen her free herself from her collar (that one nearly made me put down the game, dear god, that was awful)? Have you saved her? Killed her? *Really* killed her? Seen her perfect form? Seen the truth of her? …Has she kissed you? Because if you haven’t played Slay the Princess, you absolutely have to. It’s a hell of a ride, and it’s getting a free update this month.
Did you hear about the new psychological horror game Tsunagari Chess School?
You should try the new psychological horror game tsunagari chess school, its maybe video worthy
If you are looking for a classic Silent Hill experience, try Simulacrum Chapter one. I think you might like it.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Hear me out, it sounds like the god is basically the demiurge
I think in this remake. James never left, just parts of him still undergoing a ritual of integration. As Carl jungs research describes. I even saw stuff on his works spread out in the game like graph of the collective and personal unconscious, a caduceus to symbolize ascension, and in this original game I noticed in the start at the bathroom there is a picture of lillith. With the context probably being Carl jungs ascension of the anima, the divine feminine whose role is to guide you through the chaos to your true self so you can be whole. The lillith is the more sexualized and promiscuous, the Mary is the neutrality, and the Sophia who has an understanding of the hidden as well as the ability to ascend into integration with you. Which is believe this new remake Maria is becoming. Which is why she’s more different and even has Deja vu. I think James in this newest remake is integrated his last piece. Fun little thing i discovered. Is that I was often wondering why we don’t have a sense of self in dreams, like we are just playing actors that are playing out a role, and why do we faintly but often don’t remember dreams we know we had? Well Carl Jung describes that some dreams are our unconscious surfacing from the deepest parts of ourselves, playing a part in the dreams experience to find a way to make it back to our whole selves, whatever the hidden part of ourself is, and the dreams we remember is it integrating into us but the ones we don’t end up being lost until resurfacing again… kinda like how James probably keeps becoming conscious somewhat in the bathroom or after a loaded save point to finish the integration? Why he seems so lifeless, like he’s just not even lucid until the end, like parts of him are still fogged and have no sense of self. That’s what silent hill is, maybe a nexus where reality meets the collective unconscious.
Please tell me where the tune is from that you playing in the backround. I know it but cant remember where its from and its driving me crazy lol
Hey there - what's the timestamp?
Begins at the start of the vid and fades away at the 4minute mark
@@olymsailor83 That's the eleventh track from the Soma OST, called 'Hallway'. The whole OST is really good, honestly.
@@BadGhostsThank you for your reply. I actually got lucky and found whay I was looking for. The tune is from the 1st silent hill game called "Tears of..." by Akira Yamaoka. 😊✌
Ahhhhhh, my bad I thought for a sec you meant the very first song of the video - I always have every song listed in the end credits so if you're ever looking it should be there.
You only had to hold on for a few more years king
Well after making this and the release of silent hill 2 remake were you happy with what we got?
Gonna make a video. It'll be a long one probably.
@@BadGhosts i have long boss grinds on RuneScape. Long silent hill videos make it bearable 🤣
YOU GOTTA REVIEW UNTIL THEN BROO
Saya no uta as much as i dont think the writing or characters are that good the ost and use of the music really makes you feel like you are having the health issues the character is having and "breaks" or fucks you up. Especially the song "scream" trying to focus on reading while that shit is playing is an experience in itself that you really wont find in any other game, movie etc.
IT GETS SO LONELY MENTIONED!!!! I recently downloaded it and I finished the "sea route." Even though I read the warning and the deaths were laid out for from the get-go, I completely forgot them because of how immersed I was into the story. It's actually my first visual novel and I'm super glad it is!
Thanks so much for the comment - I really enjoyed It Gets So Lonely Here!
You should play House in Fata Morgana.
I love falling asleep to video essays but then I got to the don’t open your eyes part. Yeah I gotta finish this video tomorrow and pick something else for now. Too creepy.
OK IM BACK
Lifelong Zelda fan here: most of the longtime fandom is at least somewhat disappointed with the story of Tears of the Kingdom. I was very disappointed with the story. But I still very much enjoyed playing it, despite that.
Such a fun video! Subscribed.
That's a really well done essay, thank you for taking the time to promote indie visual novels (VNs) that are not always discussed about. As you said so well, VNs are setting up such beautiful, thoughtful and tearful stories, going back to the simplicity of what storytelling is about: emotions. Thanks for writing the whole list of featured games in the description, it makes it easy to find them!
Thank you so much for watching!
I'm at the beginning of the video so I'm not sure if you mention it but at some point you need to go through Umineko. Its a masterpiece. Though I can understand being turned off by it since it takes hundreds of hours to finish. Its a mammoth
my fave visual novel never came to the PC but theresia is a good visual novel point and click game it makes you wonder why someone set so many traps to keep you at bay from remembering where your mother is a mother who cared about you for her own benefits and a mother who the character cares for while wondering why blood makes her calm and only when she remembers her mother she remembers the amount of blood her mother caused to run theresia is a very less known game but its still makes you wonder
Wahhh...I love video essays so I was shocked to see Henry on the thumbnail! I'm super flattered for the mention of Stillwater, thank you so much! Great work on the video by the way!~
Hey there - thanks so much for watching and for the kind words! I really enjoyed Stillwater, the ending was super sweet :)
Noone would ever see the car in silent hill... it doesn't matter if it's open. James was driving back to the town to drive off into the lake with Maria in the back seat to be with her ... but the town fed on his guilt and deeds and made him forget what he had done when he was in the bathroom. And the game starts there :) it's not james blocking what he has done... its the town punishing him and luring him in.
I'm presuming your dream came through today :D
