Movie endings, they're usually pretty straight forward right? Everything pays off, the main characters learn something, and our heroes ride off into the sunset. Sometimes though, we don't get the typical ending from a movie, we get something much more nuanced, complex and open ended. The kind of endings that leave things up in the air for all of us to debate and theorise on until we're blue in the face. With Movie Endings Explained, we aim to delve into some of the more ambiguous and mysterious endings to films that have left audiences scratching their heads for years, and to attempt to explain them. In most cases, a definitive answer isn't really there, so we definitely want to hear from YOU on how you interpret the various endings we'll be discussing with this series.
This time we look at the 2000 desert island drama CAST AWAY from director Robert Zemeckis (BACK TO THE FUTURE, FORREST GUMP) starring Tom Hanks as Chuck Noland, a FedEx systems engineer who ends up marooned on an uninhabited island in the Pacific Ocean (he eventually befriends a volleyball, lol). While the end of the film didn't exactly leave people scratching their heads, there was a burning, unanswered question. Chuck kept a FedEx package that had washed ashore on the island unsealed for the four years he was stranded, and at the film's climax, he returns it to the sender. We never get to find out what was inside the package, and whether it was important or not. That's kind of the point, as the package served as more of a driving point for Chuck's character and his survival on the island. But all the same, we look into what was really inside the package, the significance of the angel wings symbol scrawled on the box and what Tom Hanks himself thought of the movie's coda!

When I watched this when I was 9, it made me cry when Chuck (Tom Hanks) lost Wilson at sea.
hehe, well I must admit that I watched this film when I was 26 and I cried when Wilson was lost as well. I laughed at myself for doing so but it made me appreciate the movie much more since it was able to move me so much when a volleyball was lost at sea. One of my favorite endings to a movie as well
Been one of my favorites since I was little.
The White Wolf ,
Guilty.
I was 8 😭😭😭😭😭😭
“Good luck, cowboy!”
- How appropriate. Tom Hanks was Woody
Ohh
Ohh shit
That foreshadowing tho

Bettina's husband was also a cowboy so the fact that she's calls Hanks' character "cowboy" is significant. I think he becomes her next cowboy. The only thing that would have been more appropriate was if the Jeep he had been driving was a Wrangler.
This ending scene always brings me to tears.
If this man can survive 4 years on an island, barely any hope, no choices but still make it off somehow.
It shows us that despite what we believe, all will be alright and that we take lots for granted.
And the whole subplot that his girlfriend was cheating on him and married her affair partner, his dentist.
@@johntorrington2672 you can feel the pain in his eyes as the math is adding up in his head with all the photos around her house.
I Liked to think he went after the girl. That's my ending and sticking to it. Lol
he goes back to her ranch, tells her all about those crazy coincidencies, askes her out to find out if fate has it for them to be together and she's like

When you smirk that way, you don't, nope, you do leave that to fate, for some time after you went to both California, and Canada, seriously.

I think I'd rather be stuck on a deserted tropical isle than out in some dusty plain in the middle of nowhere.
powerful movie, got me thru very hard times of life.the sun will rise, and you never know what the tide will bring
@nivek Lor The Tide had brought his destiny. the subliminal hints about Dick and Bettina's relationship ending is a very key principal to the ending.
The scene before his visit to the ranch where he tells his friend about how he must go on because tomorrow "Who Knows What The Tide May Bring"
There's no doubt Chuck loved Kelly but he gives her back the locket that he kept on the Island but he writes on the package he leaves at the ranch "This package saved my life , Chuck loved Kelly but Bettina was his destiny she was what "The Tide Had Brought" all along via her package, Kelly had moved on married and had a nice family But it was Bettina whom he met at the crossroads that he was destined to be with .
NATIVESUNSETS65 beautifully said! just finished my first ever watch on Blu Ray and it's even better for the island scenes especially
NATIVESUNSETS65 also the island was a preparation time for chuck to find out what is really not important so he can be FREE to love the spirit that Bettina possesses. I like your explanation.
I sincerely hope you are doing fine today, nivek Lor. I hope your life is a happy and prosperous one, and whatever caused your pain is long behind you. Good luck my friend.
I have remembered that part of the movie ,when I have lonely times.
I became attached to this movie, I identified so much with his character. I lost my wife to cancer, the power of loss is so profound .and somehow I too had to keep breathing and the sun will rise tomorrow and you never know what the tide will bring.
Same here...just trying to keep breathing
yu skme real niggas
The actress who played Bettina in this movie, Lari White, also died from cancer in 2018.
So sorry for your loss. May she rest in peace
I totally think that Tom went after Bettina, but then I am an incurable romantic.
Nope, He went to Dairy Queen for a blizzard.
Aww me to I guess that means we have good spirits and we're always thinking on the happy side
Same here.
In the beginning movie retina and his partner name showing and the end only Betinas name was showing it means her partner was
Gone that's why Tom Hanks smile and went after her.
She was looking after the cowboy after all... He got a great story to tell...
I always thought that in many ways it was about choice. On the island he felt that his only choice was through suicide, and even then had that taken away from him by the island. Now saved, at the literal crossroads he has nothing but choice. It doesn't matter what he chooses but that he can choose which was the point.
I agree. The ending pissed me off because it left us decide what happened next. Surviving and Getting off an island after 4 years is great an is in itself a happy ending. But we don’t take that. He can go back to Kelly and Ruin a happy marriage and family. He can go to the Angel wings and continue to look for hope. Or he can go back into the unknown and start fresh.
@@connorlancaster7541 This is the opposite of what the original commenter said. You highjacked the message of freedom to just go with the old cage we're put in at an early age by parents.

The soundtrack of this movie is sublime, brings me to tears every time.

Redline I haven't seen the film, so all I've heard is what little was in this video, but I'm with you. Sad, wistful, sublime.
I don't know if you noticed. There is no music in the first half of the movie until Wilson floats away. That's when the music rises slowly with sad loss and continues to be the emotional backdrop for the rest of the story.
@@johnjay9404 whoaa that's interesting

The girl with the truck was Lari White, a super vocalist and writer and a great person. She sang on many sessions of mine in Miami before moving to Nashville to pursue a career. Sadly, she passed away a few years back.
It's a classic hero's journey tale. Once we complete the journey, we unfortunately can never return to who we were before. We have changed so much, the people we knew only want us to be who we were, but we just can't do that, anymore than we could return to elementary school and live that life again. The steps we take now, must incorporate our new found perspective...and wisdom.
You see this a lot with soldiers who were in combat and then try to return to their lives in America --- they are forever changed and can never really go back to the life they once knew
Cast Away was a very soul searching movie anyone with a heart can relate to. Thank you
@Mitch...does that mean everyone should relate to it?
Cast away.
Bettina had an old Ford Truck, a Lincoln welding machine and a cute smile. Why would you go anywhere else?
Because gingers got no soul?
I sure wouldn't! And you forgot "rockin' body"
To Steven Steven her name is Lari White a very talented singer/songwriter. Listen to her song, Lead me not into temptation and tell me she doesn't have soul.
She looked pretty fine

The events following the rescue turned the story into the most riveting and deeply moving film ending I have ever experienced.
I’ve always thought the ending of this movie was Brilliantly done.
Did you now?
I thought it was horrible...
The ending left me wanting more also. However, I just learned my opinion on this movie was worthless until viewing this video as I did not see / understand her husband sending the package back nor his missing name on the sign over her driveway.
I thought the ending was perfect BECAUSE it was left open to interpretation. While he was driving, we briefly see a huge stack of cash on the seat of his car, implying that he got a huge monetary settlement from his employer. He was financially secure, healthy and relatively young. He was literally standing at the crossroads and he could do anything with his life. What that might be, was left up to the viewer's imagination.
I didn't think that the slight smile at the end was because he realized who the pretty redhead was although he did make the connection between the angel wings on the truck, the package and the ranch. I thought the smile was a knowing wink to the audience that said, after all that I've gone through, it's good to be alive and as long as you have life, you can purse happiness.
I did not realize how durable those cardboard FedEx boxes are, I mean in Cast Away they survived a plane crash, floated in salt water and then over 4 years faced the heat and sun on the island and the occasional tropical rainstorm. Maybe the military can find others uses for this stuff.
They were in the cave for most of the time.
you saved me from typing the same thought 😂
That was the old version of the FedEx boxes back in the day :-)
It makes sense, they make them from enriched nokium 3310.
I think they used stunt doubles for a lot of it. The real box was just hanging out at a crossroad in Texas.
Actually, on "Inside The Actor's Studio" Hanks firmly said that his character went back to that lady and started a family. As a fact.
After getting a good look at her he would have been nuts if he didn't go back.
If it was me I'd certainly go back to her house lol
@sekint lyf No matter how smoking hot a woman may be, there's a man out there somewhere that's completely sick of her shit. 😂😂
And in Broyles script, not shot, Chuck heads off in another direction. True story.
Multiple impregnations and live births followed. Yes.
She comments that down her road is "a whole lotta nothing." He's already survived that on that island. She doesn't count herself there, but Chuck does. He survived "nothing" all alone - and so has she. Perhaps they should see what "nothing" is like together?
Goddamn it - yes! Perfect analogy!
He jumped in, hit a hard u-turn and went right to Bettina's house. He had to.
I actually got to meet Wilson at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He hadn’t changed a bit. Wonderful guy. Kinda quiet, but very humble.
Stevee Wonders glad he made it. Was he slightly angry that that Adidas fella kept being picked to be a match ball at the World Cup?
@ Abbas Zaidi... hahaha No way, the guy survived being stranded on an island and lost at sea. He’s a celebrity and legend!
I heard he was very “down to earth”.
well rounded guy i would imagine
One of my favorite movies
I felt Tom Hanks despair and sadness, albeit to a lesser degree, when “Wilson” floated away
I remember watching this as a kid and never truly realized how great and heart warming this movie gives us. My heart cried for Wilson because it's like losing a friend that no one can never be. Wilson saved Chuck's life by helping him get to where he needed to be. I feel that once he saw that same symbol on Bethany's truck; a sign of hope and faith he kept all those years on that island, it's like life/Wilson guiding him one last time. In the end, I believe he's destined to go after the women and her dog for a 2nd chance of a brand new chapter. This film is one of Tom Hank's best films. At least Wilson came back to him in a way. 😢
The same angel that led him out the island, came over to him at the cross roads and gave him destinations to where each road head, lest he get lost again! Staggering!
Your explanation is very beautiful. Thank you. This movie helped keep me alive 15 years ago during a crisis. And then I had the worst crisis of my life over the past two years. And this to this day is still one of my top five all-time favorite movies. And it's really great to unravel a few things I hadn't noticed with your perspective. Thank you
Just keep breathing @Jenni Haase ... because tomorrow the sun will rise again and you never know what the tide will bring :)
Jenni Haase Keep your head up...
Matthew 6:33
I think the clue is in the previous scene, where Chuck mentions what the tide will bring.
The tide has brought him Bettina. She was his guardian angel.

I've been a Tom Hanks fan ever since Turner and Hooch . He's a masterful talent , to say the least . My wife and I usually go to dinner and to a Tom Hanks movie on New Year's Eve . This year 2019 there were none 😪 . His movies are life situations , most down to earth . Wow , great actor that he is . Never boring . I get great enjoyment just thinking about some of them . Forest Gump , Sully , Saving Private Ryan , Sleepless in Seattle , You Got Mail , the Green Mile , Apollo 13 Cast Away and of course , the voice of Woody in Toy Story and the list goes on . . Bless you Tom Hanks for the movies you made or were in , to come alive in all of us . You're amazing . We love you .
I agree. I really appreciate some of his somewhat lesser-recognized films as well. Several that come to my mind are: The Terminal (2004), Larry Crowne (2011), Saving Mr. Banks (20134) and News of the World (2020). He is great in every movie I have seen him in and is able to transform himself completely into that character. My favorite multiple-watch movies of his are Catch Me if you Can, Sully, Apollo 13, and Big. Films like Saving Private Ryan and Captain Phillips are almost too much to watch because of the visceral performances from Mr. Hanks. But they are essential viewing.
When I want a good cry, this is my go-to movie. The last 30 minutes of this film just tears me apart.
ikr, the Kelly visit in the garage and in the rain makes me cry too.
You should watch the Exorcist from 1973 alone then. That'll make you cry all right.
@@situated4 hahah good one!
I like to believe Chuck and Bettina end up together since fate brought him there. Another small indication is that in the beginning, when the FedEx handler picks up a package from her to be sent, we hear her listening to Elvis and see the cds on a work table. We are later reminded (a few times) of how much Chuck loves Elvis. I think this small yet purposeful detail is more evidence to suggest they belong together.
Great observation!!
So did I thought of it
i thought the exact opposite....i thought he got in his car and drove off
I love your look on the matter, the story was about change.
Plenty of evidence on screen they ended up together. Close up of the ranch sign. It was “Dick & Bettina,” now Dick’s name is gone. So Bettina’s available. The writers could have made the character that drove up an old man. Instead, she’s a single cutie about Chuck’s age. Last shot after he looks in every direction, he’s looking in her direction. Nothing in movies is an accident. And they had Elvis in common. He’d be a fool not to at least follow the impulse.
RIP Wilson
ArtDocHound LMFAO
I'm very sorry that after that much time alone, I would have ended my life.
Yes,I would.
If it wasn't for Wilson, he would have lost his mind
His name was Voit, dumb ass! ;)
WILSON IN HONOR OF RITA
This was an excellent explanation, and I love that it still leaves Chuck's future at the crossroads ambiguous.
This movie is a character study of a man who had his life planned to the second...all those daily planners he uses in the beginning prove this...who at the end has changed so much he is at peace with not having any clue where he will go next. He is at peace with just life...and the ending is perfect
That's the great thing about a movie ending like this. It's all in the imagination of the watcher what actually happened after the credits rolled. One of my all time favourites anyway.
+ Fenderkev what happened after the credits rolled?
RIP Lari White, (Bettina) Lost her to cancer this week.
Thank you for this revue. I liked hearing the music again, and appreciated the visual end, and the quote from Tom Hanks.
I vote that he followed the girl to her ranch. He told her his story and they became friends. Very close friends.
I barely noticed any of these things! Thank you so much. It’s such a powerful and thought provoking film.
In the sequel Tom works for USPS because he no longer cares about timely delivery.
Donald Fugitt LMAO
USPS actually delivers packages faster than FedEx.
Bluesummers ..if you pay more
Dhl is actually the slowest in the usa
J M dlh is dead in the us
Every time I see that part when chuck notices the wings on the back of the pick up, reminds me that everything in life happens for a reason, you just gotta trust your instincts and be confident that everything is gonna be alright.
he winds up with the girl of course. jeeze. the girl's ranch is his new home in the middle of yet another sea. at least he and she could sit on the porch and talk and talk and explore their own journeys. there was already instant attraction.
Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt: the entire scene at the end with them reuniting at Kelly's house and being in the rain to when he brings her back home up the driveway: probably the best acting I've ever seen along with Chuck Noland's soliloquy at the end talking about surviving on the island
We all stand at crossroads in life many times. Our life consists of the choices we make there.
the choices we make are really pre ordained ...kinda like when chuck says he never should have got on that plane....
I’m on the roller coaster of life, screw the crossroad. 🤗💃🤗
The music in this movie was so powerful. The ending had me in tears.
Tom Hanks is amazing actor! I totally get this movie. The ending words of the girl, "You look lost," finding him at a crossroads. He's finally found his girl. His angel.
"IT'S GOING TO BE ALRIGHT AS LONG AS YA KEEP BREATHING" damn deep man!
Hai❤❤❤
I think whats powerful about the ending is that he has choice. He's drinking water from a bottle, driving a car, and he can choose to go wherever he wants. He didnt have choice on the island- he was subjected to the wills of nature, fate, etc...but now he exerts his own agency, and thus, through that agency, has subjectivity and identity.
tempestuousseaurchin Its a gift from God; Free Will.
He basically says this when talking with his friend after the rescue. "On the island I had control over NOTHING. I couldn't even kill myself. Now I am here, talking to you...I have ICE in my glass."
With a Ford, you can do that
fuck God, religious bullshit is the polar opposite of "free will".
Isnt western civilization marvelous.
After further browsing this morning, I found that Lari White, (Bettina in the film) has passed away this year aged 52. Very sad to hear indeed!

That was such a good movie. I was playing ball with my son in the pool once and the ball got away so I screamed "Wilson!" and my son looked at me like I was crazy so I made him watch the movie. He liked it too all these years later, it still holds up.
After so many years this is still in my top 3 favorites. I loved it when he picked up the lighter and just had to pull the trigger for a flame, rather than work so hard for such a simple thing on the island. We take so so much for granted.
I can't believe that I randomly thought of this movie that I saw years ago and decided to finally look up the ending one day after you posted this. Synchronicity, man. Thank you for the excellent explanation. I subbed and thumbed up.

This is actually my favorite Tom Hank movie. A fantastic performance and 40 minutes of the film has no dialog at all. If you're an introvert square peg in life you would find his scenario somewhat appealing.
I remember watching the movie in the theatre and thinking, right before the fade to black, that this is a good moment to end the film. I really liked the simple, surprising fade to black and end. As I was leaving the theatre, I heard a couple people complaining about the ending and later a friend also complained about it when we discussed the movie. I think another idea in the film is that Chuck was always racing against the clock and trying to cut down time, hurry against it, but in the end he has been transformed. He has all the time in the world and is in no rush at all.
Hell YES! I said this YEARS ago! I know it's open ended - but I always believed he went back to Bettina's ranch and explained who he was and what happened with that package. I like to believe that with her INCREDIBLY gorgeous smile, she would have been interested to hear more and they eventually got together. I never begrudged Helen Hunt's character for not bailing on her marriage despite Chuck being the love of her life. This is one of those rare movies that has such simplicity yet packs a powerful message. I appreciate Robert Zemeckis as a director - he is a fantastic storyteller.
Good explanation!! It left me hangin! LoL. It’s one of my favorite movies because, I always imagine what it would be like to be stranded on some island 🌴 , totally gone from Civilization, the work force, technology, bills and taxes, etc etc. I own it on dvd and watch it sometimes.
There was nothing hanging about it. He looked to the left and the industrialized world, to the north where it was like an island in Canada with nothing, and then to the right of the promise of future in the American West, and then he looked to HIS HOPE. That's the ending, and why he smiles.
@Betty Boop as lovely as that sounds, you would be unable to do the most important thing the creator has asked you to do?

Have a great day.
I was re-watching Cast Away tonight, and I just realized what the movie was really about. I wanted to downloaded it. I couldn't find it when I typed 'Castaway', but I found the movie when I typed 'Cast Away'. In short, the movie is about two people who were in relationships that ended, and "cast away" from their current relationship, only to find each other. The red haired artist was cast away by the cheating husband. Chuck and Kelly were deeply in love but not meant to be, which is why they never found time, their careers were more important. When he gets back from his castaway, we see the same intersection, but now the red haired girl is single, and Chuck is single, and both finally meet. Or at least suggested. And it ends with Chuck with a big knowing smile. Look at the similarities, she's alone in the middle of an ocean of land, in her ranch. while Chuck lived for the same 4 years in an ocean of water on his own island. And it's FedEx who joins them together with one box. The box "saved his life." But I have to admit, that smirk could also mean pleased at making the delivery. But I don't think so. I think he realizes whats more important in life, and he found her. And not a big corporate life.
I did the story and this guy got it right. Of course, you're entitled to your interpretation. Remember the feeling you got when Chuck No Land looked down the four roads? Creating that in the audience was the real reason for the film. See? Actually, I did the Hanks scene in my VW at that very spot back in the summer of 1971. After pondering and relishing, I decided ... to go home.
ulyssescpt I’ve been to that area of West Texas and it IS really very similar viscerally to being on the ocean. I think this was my favorite movie ending of all time.
@@nicholsonscience6229 the girl's ranch was his home. at least he and she could sit on the porch and talk and talk and explore their own journeys. there was already instant attraction.
If you go to that exact intersection and go north, just like in the movie, you will find that exact house. Yes, the gate really has angel wings. Its really there. You can even stay there. It's called Arrington ranch house. It's really there!
When Chuck gave the pocket watch back to Kelly, Kelly gave the unopened engagement ring box back to Chuck. She wanted to open it when he came back to her. She didn't have the heart to open it after the funeral. It always sustained her faith that somehow, he would come home. She held on to it unopened as a remembrance of their love for each other.
Chuck went back to visit with Bettina after she left him at the crossroads. With that last look she gave him, who wouldn't! She was in the barn getting ready to do some work. It being a hot day, she invited him to join her in having a cool iced tea. Chuck explained to her all that had happened and how that package sustained his faith that he would return home from the island.
This was better than any therapy he could ever have. She was kind and listened with her heart.
It wasn't his intent to find love, but rather to find himself and a path forward.
Delivering that package, was the key to that journey.
Eventually they would fall in love and live happily ever after, but it took a lot of time for her to learn to trust again and for him to open his heart to her after losing Kelly. Bettina added Chuck's name to the arched entry to her land.
They named their first child Wilson!
Brilliant 🙌🏿😁
@@2126beatz Thanks :)
I'm liking it.
Wilson!!!!!
I read your ending again. Gave me goosebumps. You would make a very good screen writer.
I wonder where Wison finally ended up? Poor Lil fella'
Jason Berry I hope he’s okay
He's in Tahiti, drinking pinacoladas.
Washed up I think.
Sold into the soccer ball sex trade.
Wilson washed up to shore years later, after surviving the sharks and the seagulls pooping on him. Finally a group of kids find Wilson they start puching, kicking and throwing him around. While his best friend is out there somewhere in the crossroads smacking that a**.
I like to think she saw the package and message and drove the car back to him. Throughout the whole movie the audience gets to see important things before Chuck does. Then at the end Chuck see’s something that the audience don’t get to see. I think bettina was coming back to him.
Yes!
I like your thinking. Would like to add that Chuck spent few minutes contemplating which way to go, for that girl to realize that package was from him.
Good call! My new favorite ending! Thanks!
I think the main point of the ending is that Chuck doesn't need more "divine signals" for living, at last he is responsable of his own life. Until that point, Chuck was always searching for a deeper meaning about his existence but always outside him, even in the worst moments, he needed to believe about something outside. The crossroads represents the freedom of choice, and the smile is the manifestation of this understanding; no matter what decision you may take it's all up to you. This is why we don't see Chuck run after the girl with the wings on the van, because he doesn't need to do it, now he can chose.
The woman was Country Singer Lari White who passed away in 2018. RIP
Tom Hanks said in another interview that his destiny was always Bettina...
Yes. The wings were more than just hope. They were also inspiration, motivation. He held the package because the wings made it special, they gave him the idea of delivering the package. In that they gave him direction. The wings gave him the idea to create a sail and finally get home. He painted the wings on his sail following them as he sailed home. Throughout his journey the wings guided him.
In the end when Noland looks down each road seeing nothing, but an empty road stretching toward the horizon then looks back toward Bettina driving away and he smiles because he decided where to go.
I guess it's possible that Noland smiled cuz he thought I think I'll go down one of the other roads and get some Taco Bell, but I think he continued to let the wings guide him and went to see what was in Bettina's package.
SoothingChime15 I think it was. That kind of ending is so perfect you write it first and then work back from there. What an incredible movie. It resonates strongly with everyone. The epitome of modern filmmaking and storytelling.
Jesus this is retarded
Hanks was a great actor, always loved his movies and his eloquence in explaining them. It's sad that he never found that same persuasiveness in his own life, deciding instead to end it. May he rest in peace. #RIPHanks #PatAdams #MrsDoubtfire #BIG #GenieAladdin #Jumanji
BewareTheIdes ya mean Robin Williams?
On the island he was trapped in an immense expanse of water subject to the whims of fate until he chose his own fate (the raft). He escaped the limitations of the island through exercising his will. Upon return to "the world" he found due to circumstances outside his control he had figuratively died to his previous life. It remained now for him to accept the loss and only then would he be free to embrace the gift that followed, to be reborn or "sculpted" by his guardian angel into a new life, a clean slate of possibilities.
At the crossroads much like the island he was surrounded by an immense expanse of land with once again the means to exercise choice (the automobile). Every potential option (the roads) were within his power to pursue, he need only exercise his will and choose.
Bettina had served as his guardian angel by investing him with purpose of survival via his will to deliver the package. At the crossroads the angel provided closure to his previous life and released him to his new life when she instructed that all avenues where once again open to him, his will, his choice. He was reborn at the crossroads.
Well done.
the anti "sell your soul to the devil" at the crossroads, of sorts
I think in that last scene when he squares his shoulders with the street to nowhere, he made up his mind that the arch may read Chuck and Bettina. 🤔
I imagine him going back to her crying on his knees hugging her... It was her that kept him alive ✨🌊
Zemeckis is such an extraordinary director. Love this movie and Hanks performance is superb.
Great video and analysis! Subscribed!!

One of my all time favorite movies. I used to show it to my students and had them come up with Chuck's decision. Vast majority of them including the boys had him going to Bettina. Thanks Tom and Robert for such a masterpiece.
I tend to think Chuck went back to talk to Bettina finding her reading his note.
I found another video on this movie only like 9 minutes long. I think it was titled something like "audience missed the point of this movie" and the thumbnail had Kelly and the caption "not an honest woman". I think the channel was "extra cheese project"
His video lays out a lot of details that could be overlooked pointing to Kelly cheating on Chuck and wanting to confess and break up, but then he points out 1 line that clinched it for me.
Upon being rescued, instead of being reunited with Kelly, he finds himself face to face with Kelly's husband. Her husband makes excuses for Kelly, admitting his return is hard for her. He also states
"You won't remember me, but I performed root canal on you 5 years ago."
It's so subtle. Why would a dental surgeon remember 1 patient out of hundreds or thousands of patients 5 years later?
Because after being sedated for his root canal, Kelly came to pick Chuck up. And that's how Kelly and her husband met 1 year before Chuck was lost at sea.
This is why Kelly's husband reminds Chuck that he was the guy who performed his root canal 5 years ago. It is why he is Kelly's husband today. It was the reason for him and Chuck meeting face to face again after 5 years.
Kelly did indeed feel guilty about procrastinating and confessing that she was cheating on Chuck. She thought he was dead and would never know the truth.
When he turns up alive after 4 years, she feels the need to confess, but doesn't have the strength or courage to face him. This is why we see her get out of the car, but her husband ushers her back inside.
When you do the math, grieving the death of your boyfriend, moving on to be healthy to start a new relationship, getting engaged, married, and having a 2 year old child in 4 years seems like a tight schedule. Unless she had a head start on the boyfriend situation to "help" her through the grieving process.
The other video claims that Chuck figures out that Kelly cheated on him and allows her to save face by not confronting her about it. Instead he says, "Let me get this straight... We have a professional football team now?" And Kelly reacts with a sigh of relief and moves forward with bemusement.
They both get the closure they need and resist the temptation to rekindle a ruined damaged relationship.
It's easy to miss that the arch said "Dick and Bettina" at the start of the film. It's hard to miss that Dick receives the package while enjoying the company of a woman. It's easy to miss that the arch later only reads "Bettina" at the end of the movie.
And it's hard to miss that Bettina's angel wing package was also with Chuck on the island. It's hard to miss that Chuck painted the angel wings on his sail. It's hard to miss that Chuck's root canal led to an infection that he had to deal with by removing his own tooth. He also lost the picture of Kelly a long time ago, and had to leave his portrait of her behind as well.
There are clear parallels for both couples if you are able to catch the details.
Me? I am thinking both Chuck and Bettina are in healthy places in their lives to start a new relationship. No issues of "rebound" or regrets. Just trust the woman who can weld, drives a pick up, and brings her dog wherever she goes. It doesn't hurt that she is friendly, helpful, and has a great smile.
@@michaelcasal3857 I watched that video too and it blew me away. Made me see those scenes very differently and also made me realize why the scenes struck me as just a tiny bit "off" but I couldnt' figure out why. Cuz , I missed this point too!
Well done! I picked up MOST of the clues my first time watching it & had the most of the same conclusions as you did at the end. It seemed very apparent what SHOULD happen, but I can count on both hands the many missed opportunities in my own life. Life is not always a fairy tale so I appreciated the non-standard Hollywood ending.
Of course, I wanted to see what happened immediately following "The End", but i found it intriguing that they left us guessing.
This is one of my favorite films of all time - tears are in my eyes from the time Chuck's on the plane back home 'til the end of the film.
I can't add much to the above video except for the main reason why the movie touched me so much - the POWER OF CULTURE. Chuck reluctantly had a radical change of culture because of the plane crash & it seemed that FEW (maybe 1 old friend) even began to get that upon Chuck's transition back to American culture. Chuck would NEVER be the same - he potentially could be BITTER or BETTER depending on how he deals w/ the initial shock.
This film reminded me the many people who I know that have gone to other countries to serve in various missions (I was involved in Relief & Development for awhile). It's hard to GO, but sometimes RETURNING HOME is even harder.
This isn't too different than our military personnel returning from war - sometimes they just need somebody to talk to, somebody who cares, somebody who will listen when they return home...
For example, upon my return FEW people asked me how the work went. There were tragic stories (after natural disasters) to convey & praise reports as well, but by nature people are self-absorbed & miss so much around them. I had given a portion of my life & very few people around me were interested.
Sadly, 20 years later even my wife avoids asking me what happened during the most pivotal time of my life.
I felt Chuck's discomfort & uncertainty. I've traveled around the country a lot since & have been not far from where the final scene was shot in the panhandle of Texas. I understood why Chuck wanted to get away, see something new, have an adventure...
I don't think he heard me exhorting him at the end of the movie to "Follow that woman!" ;-)
Tom's character survived based partly by the things that fate washed up on his island. The things that fate gave him. He knows that. He also knows because that girl just happened to drive up as he was there... fate washed her ashore just at the right time in his life. There is no doubt that he took that as sign and drove back to talk to Bettina, and found his future there.
Hard to describe the emotions you experience while watching Tom Hanks on film. Truly one of the best ever and tied at first for me along side Robin Williams.
The actress who played Bettina died earlier this year, at the too-soon age of 52. : /
I also heard that.... Quite sad.... Way to young.
I believe he just found out that she is her future wife and it's a sign that those wings kept him alive because of her wings and maybe he's supposed to be with her and be in peace
I think you are on to some THING
At the end he smiled and realized that he had a pretty damn good pick up line
Hai😍😍😍
Happy 20th Year Anniversary Cast Away !
I can rest in peace now...thank you
I always thought the same winds that first brought him to the safety of the deserted island, later propelled his makeshift angel wings sail that carried him off the island and finally continued to guide him at the crossroads to Bettina. The winds were blowing in the direction of her home.
THe dialogue in this scene are meaningful especially the last one " if
you head back that direction you will find whole lot of nothing all the
way to canada".... then she heads that way..... she left him with a
choice..... And he knew he was destined to be here, to be with her....
The last smile was a sign of relief..... the one you have when you know
you got what you deserved and you deserved best reward......
Bettina was Lari White, a very popular & attractive country music artist for 30 years & an actress. She died too young of cancer at 52 in 2018. "Let the angels of Thy loving-kindness descend successively upon her, and shelter her beneath Thy blessed Tree. Thou art, verily, the Ever-Forgiving, the Most Generous, the All-Bountiful." ~ Baha'i Faith Prayer
I thought that sounded like a Bahai prayer
@@owrang9756 Yes, they do refresh.
I always saw the final scene as Chuck being marooned again in the middle of nowhere, but this time it happened to be on land. The little smirk was a combination of "WTF, again?" and "I got this".
I like your perspective.
Wasn't the island land?
Thank you for this video, great observations and an even better delivery ( no pun intended )
Thank you for making this video. It was heart warming
When he smiles at the end, I can hear him thinking: "Look what the tide has brought me."
As for what happened after the ending - you kidding me - of course, he goes and talks to the female and pets the dog. She finds out how much money he has from his compensation at FedEx, throws that puntang on him as only a redhead can. He falls head over heels in love and marries her within a week. She burns through his money in less than a year until he has nothing, kicks his ass out, and he finds himself at that crossroad again a devastated and broken man. But this time he is hitchhiking as he is broke. He is looking down the 4 roads and thinking: "Just breathe, just continue to breathe. For tomorrow, who knows what the tide will bring."
Good one :) that could be very possible lol
🤣🤣👌💯I love this!
Interesting idea, but it seems to me that isn't in her character at all. She seems to be hard working, and able to rely on only herself. She wouldnt need or care about his money.
@@FatherCorn --- "need" has nothing to do with such an issue.
@@Simmons2358 if you need money to survive, yes it does.
I can't believe the narrator doesn't know how the package saved him. The wings gave him the idea for the raft and how to get past the breakers.
@AsSeenOnTV Correct.
your going to have to explain the breakers, ill give you the raft!!!!!
@@willieboy8798 "breakers" are what waves coming to shore are called, if that's what you're asking. At the beginning of the film, we see on Chuck's desk a Sailing Certificate.
Most annoying that he didn't know how to pronounce "verde" correctly.
The package saved him by representing hope. Hope that one day he would get off that island and deliver it. Thats why he saved it. That's why he paints the winged logo onto his porta-potty sail. It represents hope and getting off the island to him.
