Movie endings, they're usually pretty straight forward right? Everything pays off, the main characters learn something, and our heroes ride off into the sunset. Sometimes though, we don't get the typical ending from a movie, we get something much more nuanced, complex and open ended. The kind of endings that leave things up in the air for all of us to debate and theorise on until we're blue in the face. With Movie Endings Explained, we aim to delve into some of the more ambiguous and mysterious endings to films that have left audiences scratching their heads for years, and to attempt to explain them. In most cases, a definitive answer isn't really there, so we definitely want to hear from YOU on how you interpret the various endings we'll be discussing with this series.
This time we take a look at the finale to director Joe Carnahan's 2011 film THE GREY starring Liam Neeson. While the survival thriller was generally well received, its last scene split audiences. The marketing of the film had built up the expectation for moviegoers that they would get to see Liam Neeson fighting a wolf. While the primal theme of man versus nature and indeed man versus beast, is very much a big part of the film, it's about much more than that too. It's a film that explores mortality, and how we deal with it, set in the back drop of the harsh Alaskan wilderness and a group of men stranded there after a plane crash. In this installment of Movie Endings Explained we look at the ending of THE GREY, which isn't so much a mystery as it is a concealment. Using shots from the trailers that didn't make it into the final cut, some behind the scenes images, and the tantalising post credits scene, we piece together what could have been, and explore whether or not we should've seen more at the close of the film.

The way I see it: in the end he realizes that death is inevitable (and it really is), so instead of panicking or praying for more life, he just accepts it as part of the journey of life. But before death takes him, he decides to have a last good fight. Thats the message for me: death awaits everyone, so why the fuck not go into the fray and have a last good fight before it comes, instead of just hiding or crying in a corner? Give life one last epic blow on the chin.

Wolves are very cautious even the alpha males would give you time before they attack, as realistic as it gets wolves communicate and tell off intentions by their body movement mostly, and little with their vocals. Liam was on his knees which is a passive position (staying low) and not challenging to the wolf until he stood up and that was it.

well i could probably see that you see in some Alpha Males in packs they love a good challenge like a fight to determine who is stronger and i believe what that wolf saw in this man it saw he had the potential of giving into a challenge a fight to the death so it lets him prepare to give all the fight he can give in this challenge or if that's what the wolf might have wanted at least either that or it just wanted to eat him

The wolves represent the demons that these men carry. Every man alive has demons. It is a unique look into how men deal and cope with their emotions under stress and tense times. Its a rare movie to show that men are ultimately human beings. Liam 's character ottaway depicts what men go through when someone the care about leaves them. On the brink and broken. Its a good look at how a man with nothing to live for chooses to fight instead of dying. The meaning is found not at the goal but the struggle to the goal. Each men you could say represents a theme in the film. There is a alot of depth and a few pink elephants in the film when it comes to discussing men. In doing so it humanizes them and as a result in this current society thats considered a taboo thing. An inconvenient truth. One example of the depth is this, Diaz challenges ottaway not because he really wants to lead, but because he wants to see is ottaway is up ot the task. Once he knows this diaz falls into line , his loyalty earned. There are many men like this in real life. Theres another character who talks about his daughter and how he enjoyed the little time he had with her. It is implied that he was divorced and could not see his children as a result. For men like this, their closest thing in the world is their children and when you take away that you essential cut them off as well. He was fighting for a chance to see her again. Many fathers are isolated like this and they would do anything to be with and help their kids. The movie on the outside is good, but what sets it apart is the some of the scenes that show the men finally opening up with their emotions, only after the threat of imminent death. You can see the reality of what its like to get a man to open his emotions up. This is how hard it is for them to be open with each other. This movie shows much more than just survival in my opinion. It reflects on a man's life and struggles through the use of the wolves and the elements. It is a good look in how a man lives in this world today.

I like your interpretation, but I think it's much simpler than that. The wolves represent the inevitability of death. Death will come for them all, and it's just a question of how each man chooses to face that end.

Finally someone had it in mind!! Diaz challenge Ottaway (for whatever reason) resemble the dominance fight in a typical wolf pack, which was indeed shown by the Alpha male twice at least. In the end, Diaz turn Coverup, stubborness of an outcast carrying meaninglessness into being accepted, contribute, and accept himself & nature.
In the particular case of Ottaway, the first howl get his numbness tingling, remind him of only blur image of his wife. Throughout first half, that seemingly last image fade and hold back alternately. Also, he constantly show experience to handle death to an extent, but not understand God intention for death("I want to [have faith], but all I care about is now[survive], sort of).
Through the group, suddenly his emotion for his father raise up through the fog of life situation & wife image, just like Diaz truely realize his fundamental fear. The Father lesson seem relevant now, but he hasn't got it fully yet.
Until the river bank, the reminder of suicide attempt is connecting his true gut with the poem. But when the last company gone, he was seriously skeptical: why God let a man not wanting to live left? All the pieces of his wife, father words, outcasts coming together, what all those mean? At that exact moment, no "now" left to hide them anymore, no more promise of potential key to unlock the mystery.
The answer seem proposed a bit quickly: Living life in itself has meaning, in living it, experience its beauty when possible(glance the letter to realize neither have to cling to his wife, nor expect death), in seeing Diaz accept God, just one step away from accept his own spirit, even as lonely outcast. That moment of realizing, that man shed his tears for the first time, cuz he has seen (not understand) the logic of life. Because he see it clearly now, he just smile at the fact of the dent. Now, not fear of his life meaningless, his wife final word, the poem now all make clearest sense. They align into one way only: be courage, fight to go forward in any minute of living; until life give you death, then your turn to accept it.
I know the two alpha fighting scene is too cliché just to match the former fighting in the trees. But the after credit was just beautiful, that the two alpha feel each other, to the extend of last breaths of life.

My father began working at the age of seven as a shepherd, this was in Northern Greece, Macedonia. When he was 16 he started being sent up into the mountains with flocks of sheep to graze in the high meadows for weeks at a time. On his first stay in the mountains he fought his first wolf, with a staff and a knife. He never had a firearm with him. He kept that first wolf pelt and turned it into a cape

I believe Liam survived the fight. He was just resting on the dying wolf. He survived because he was laying his head on the belly of the wolf. If he had died the other wolves that were nearby would have come to him. Since he won the fight against the alpha wolf the other wolves of the pack stayed at a distance because they knew he was still alive and they were afraid to approach him.

couscouswoman I believe from the poem that Neeson recites, they are both dead since “live and die on this day” is repeated twice. Plus Neeson fights the alpha wolf, and they only fight when they feel their rank being challenged, hence the phrasing “once more into the fray.” Obviously they both fought, wolf fighting man while man fighting wolf “the greatest fight (they) ever known.” As they both fought, they both lived and died on that day

    • @gh0st391
      @gh0st391 5 років тому +9

That’s not logistically true. The alpha is a determiner, or the wise one they feel is needed to follow without being blind. The wolves would most definitely go after him after their very own was killed, even if it wasn’t their alpha. But I do feel that they both died as the best fight of their lives was also the last.
Honestly I may be wrong but I assume it to how us as humans would go about something like this.
Cause family is everything and if someone killed you as my sister, then I’d want to be the one that beats whoever killed you down into their six feet to rot.
But not gonna lie I’d probably die too, but at least I didn’t let them think killing you was gonna be easier than killing my stubborn ass lol

Right and I don't believe we ever see God, but that's what I feel. If anyone here has died of a car accident or on the table and came back to life, you'll understand there is another place for Us all. I never seen God or jesus for that matter, just all my friends and family from years ago. An I'm talking dang near caveman type people even. But I believe an in my mind knew they were related to me. It was pure bliss and I really wanted to stay there. I feel grateful now that I know that there's a heaven if that's what you want to call it. But as soon as I died it was there, no following a light to the pearly gates. Just no want's no needs and no pain. People may think I'm nutts and maybe I am now lol. But I have proof that would take to long to text out. I don't know why I went astray on this, I just felt like it needed to be said.

Thank you for liking what I said, because there is something greater out there. But heaven wasn't up in the sky, how he was looking up. Idk why people look up. When I died it was right here on earth, but with much more beauty. Everything was so vibrant and alive. There all right here, we just can't see them threw our living human eye's, it's hard to explain. But I did end up saving my daughters mother by seeing who I never seen before. But when I seen her I knew who she was, it was her grandmother who had passed an told me to please tell my X to go see a doctor bradfield. I'll never forget that name or her face telling me this. She wasn't sure about all this, my X ... but I didn't care, I was back living and very bummed I didn't get to stay in that place. I seen everything an everyone. My daughters mom then called me 2 weeks later an said she was fine and knew it was BS. I said idc what you believe, I promised your grandmother I would tell you. 18 days passed an she called crying her eyes out, and that she was going to die from cancer like her grandmother did. I said I don't think that's the case her, why would this lady tell me to tell you to go to a doctor I've never heard of. After a quick visit and stay at the hospital shes been free and clear of cervical cancer for 15 years now. It's okay to not believe me but I know now. And I'll keep on believing in a bigger much higher power. We even become a type of higher power when we pass, my mind just knew who everyone was. There's so much more to all this, I wish I had the time an skillset to get it out on paper or here. Maybe someday I can be interviewed

Sadly, even if he did survive the wolf fight, the elements would still have taken him out. He is in the middle of nowhere, badly injured, with no sign of civilization. Personally, this is by far my favourite man vs nature movie and it still sends a shiver up my spine during quite a few scenes. I would not have changed a thing in this film. Great job wrapping it up by the way.

The wolf definitely dies but whether Liam is dead or not who knows. Liam's head was on the wolfs belly which means he led down and put himself there because the wolf couldn't of. This means that the wolf fell before Liam did and really Liam won the fight, This also explains why the other wolves didn't chew him to pieces afterwards. As Liam defeated the alpha male he in turn becomes the new alpha of the pack, meaning the beta and omega members of the pack have to obey and respect him as neccessary

The alpha stuff is silly movie-logic. A pack of wolves doesn't decide to attack their prey one at a time and, if the alpha was injured, the others wouldn't suddenly bow down and obey another species who just killed one of their pack. Fun fact: the whole concept of the "alpha male" in grey wolves was a mistake since disavowed by the writer who popularized the term. It was based wolves in captivity who would be forced to form packs with other captive wolves outside their family, thus meaning that they didn't fully trust each other and vied for dominance. Actual grey wolves have a family structure and don't challenge each other to be head of the pack. Of course, wolves also wouldn't have been pursuing a mob of people the way the film depicts either as their generally scared of humans. Still a good movie but not very kind to wolves.

I feel like a major message in the film's plot is centered around and faith, the meaning of life, and coping with mortality. What's incredibly interesting about this to me, as we find out through the ending, is that out of all the plane crash survivors, Ottway seemingly has the least to live for, and yet he pushes the hardest for himself and the others to live.
Ottway is always the first character to make a decision, to keep the group moving, and to do whatever he can to motivate the other survivors to live. He gives them purpose and direction in an extremely depressing and hopeless situation. Most give their faith in him right away, but Diaz is doubtful and challenges Ottway's leadership, which we come to understand is a result of Diaz's fear, and not knowing if he will survive, or even how to survive. Ottway doesn't have the answer to when, or even if, they are going to make it out of their situation alive, but he is the most capable, and has the tools and teachings to show others how to survive, how to live, until that answer is revealed to them. In a lot of ways, the relationship between Ottway and the group, is the same relationship between the Alpha male wolf and his pack, and more importantly, the relationship between God and Ottway. Ottway shouts at the sky, challenging God to show him something real, something to believe in, he's looking for a sign from the heavens to give him a reason to live, but its only grey sky, hazy and unclear, which in my opinion, is a very poetic way to illustrate the relationship between faith and mortality. We may feel like we need something in return for our faith, but just the act of having faith gives us a reason and purpose to live outside of pure animal instinct, it is a coping mechanism for humanity's awareness of our own mortality, even if there is no clear answer for when you will die, or what happens after death.
As an audience, the filmmaker has us experience these same messages of faith and mortality; we witness the struggle for Ottway and the others to survive, we go through the loss and test of faith when one of the survivors die, and we gain small moments of hope, like when Diaz activates the GPS watch, or when they find the river. In the end, we are left without witnessing the outcome of the fight with the Alpha male, the fight for survival, and we arn't exactly sure if Ottway lives. In a very clever way, the audience experiences the same unknowing that Ottway does when he shouts at God for answers. In my opinion, it doesn't matter what happens afterwards, we already know that death is inevitable, and we don't know if or when it happens, but we know for certain that he fought with everything he could to survive.
Truthfully, I believe Ottway survives his encounter with the Alpha male, the way his head is leaning against the wolf's side while it takes it's taking it's last breaths is very similar to how he had his hand against the wolf that he shot in the beginning of the film, it seems to be alluding to the fact that he killed it and he is helping it move on to death (similar as well to how he helps the one plane crash survivor cope with his death earlier in the film.)
Either way you perceive it, what a great film though.

This ending wasnt about winning or losing vs nature. It was about how he chose to meet that fate he lost and knew it. Thats why the ending worked. Fighting the wolf would have been irrelivant. He was going to freeze to death or bleed to death regardless. Perfect ending one of the few times in the last few decades a film got people to think.

There are some that say that this is an anti religious movie that argues against the existence of God, especially when we consider how everyone died. But i disagree. when i think about Johns suicide being halted by the howl of the wolf, i realize that he was always going to die, but the only question is by what force? In the scene after Henrik dies where he looks up to the heavens and says "fuck faith earn it, show me something real and I'll believe in you till the day I die!", and then shortly thereafter he ends up in the heart of the wolfs den; i believe thats the sign from God that he was looking for. The whole movie led him straight to the one place he was trying to avoid, but deep down he knew it was his destiny, hence the smirk during the final scene. What are the odds!? We think death is evil but death is simply a part of existence. This movie is so much more than a survival film depicting a fight against nature, it is a fight against the self in the face of imminent and inevitable death. I wonder, why did he fight so hard to survive even though he was suicidal?? Did he ask himself that? After making a career as a hunter of wolves, and living in perpetual misery after his wife death, it only makes sense that he would Go out battling a wolf, not by suicide. That sounds like a realistic plot with concrete themes of faith, destiny, and mortality. Im glad the writers didnt add some random savior into the script. Powerful

I think the movie subtly lets us know that even if Liam did kill the wolf he probably succumbed to hypothermia. Notice how in the scenes preceding the climax he begins stripping the layers of his clothing off. I think this meant to convey Liam was getting a "false warmth" as it were, which is indicative of the final stages of hypothermia.

The Grey's ending as it is shown is extraordinarily powerful. It leaves it entirely up to us to wrap our heads around what might -or not- have happened to the character. In my view, the film's not about a man fighting a wolf, but rather about a man's desire to live his life to its fullest, right up to its end, never giving up. It would have made an entirely different, way less powerful film, had the fight scene between the wolf and the hero been shown.

Disembodied spirits, not realizing they had died. In their perilous journey, finally realizing, one by one, that it was time for them to pass on. I noticed that there seemed to be an equal amount of wolves, one for each dude, until the Final Wolf Alpha, confronted the final Man Alpha. Men have survived wolf attacks since the majority of the deceased have been women and children. A healthy adult man could kill a lone wolf with a knife the same way they have killed attack dogs. Let him bite your non-dominant arm and then stab him through the chest taking out the heart and both lungs. Wolves try to attack from behind for a reason. Men have survived Mountain Lion attacks and Mountain Lions destroy wolves one on one. You don't have to be King Leonidas to defeat such a creature.

I liked the ending. Packed more of a punch in not knowing.
4:47 always gives me shivers. The monstrous growl, the silence, and the sudden movement of the fight beginning only to suddenly cut away.

I think there is also the contrast between Neeson's character, and the other character who decided to just give up earlier on. To sit down by the river, and just wait to die.

The ending is perfect the way it is.
That aside, that shot showing the after credits scene from another angle is awesome

That poem is short but so deep I can’t help get watered eyes when I hear it.

They both Died... but in dying they respected each others desire to survive..

I like to think both survived, and though combat they came to respect each other, and then they both lived happily ever after.

I think by leaving the fight scene out, it took this movie from being an action movie to an award worthy film.

He survives. There's a alternative angle of the fight at the end, and a tiny fight put together. You can find it on UA-cam. In that vid frame by frame, the alpha and him tussle for abit. He gets bit in the stomach and scratched on his forehead and cheek. The alpha goes for his throat, he dodges to the right and splits the wolf's spinal cord with the knife. That's why he was able to lay on it. It couldn't move. He was also holding a bottle of water while laying on the wolf. Which shows he had time to kill the wolf, grab the water, come back and rest his head on its warm pelt. He switched the GPS before the fight if you remember, and a helicopter saves him

I loved this film, and it closed it well with the final scene. A man, facing mortality, once more steps into the fray.

One of my fav movies ever!! A great survival movie but also very deep and exciting. I've recommended this movie to a lot of people and some if not most don't appreciate the ending but to me the ending was brilliant! Plus the music is great!

I found the ENTIRE movie powerful. One of my all-time favorites. I can still quote the poem. The ending was perfect. I didn't need to see the fight to walk away knowing I'd witnessed a fantastic film.
