    If you watch the movie, you’ll see that when they release Brooks, the camera faces at his front with the jail behind him, but for Red it shows his back, with the outside world in front. This symbolizes that Brooks’s home was Shawshank, and that Red will make it on the outside.

    • @johnny07652
      @johnny07652 5 років тому +439

      I think that's part of the allegory here. In Christianity, redemption comes once a sinner is repentant, i.e. admits he is a sinner. Red becomes that penitent sinner. All the others (except Andy) are guilty, but Red becomes the only one in the film that we see actually confess his sin, admit his guilt.

    Fun fact: Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford, Paul Newman, Gene Hackman, Robert Redford and Robert Duvall were considered for the part of Red. In the original novel, Red is a middle-aged white Irishman with graying red hair. However, Frank Darabont always had Morgan Freeman in mind for the role, because of his authoritative presence, demeanor, and deep voice. Red's reply, "Maybe it's because I'm Irish," to Andy's inquiry about his nickname was kept in the film as a joke.

      Thought it was a halfway house, sponsored by Shawshank. Maybe I'm totally wrong! You had to really feel for Brooks. He's incarcerated for 50 long years, we never know what crime he committed (Unless it's in the book, which I never read, for the record!), and he couldn't adapt to life outside Shawshank. He probably suffered from Depression. The only life he knew was from being institutionalized in prison.

    One of my favorite memories of this movie: Years ago I was with a couple of friends at a video store, one of them was _dead set_ on renting a dumb action movie. Having seen this, I *insisted,* “no you have to watch Shawshank”. He grumbled, but relented.
    *Stone silence in the room by the halfway mark.*
    Afterward, Action Movie friend, who was obviously emotionally stirred, thanked me for twisting his arm into renting it. ... Hope is a good thing... maybe the best of all things.

      I have not yet met a person who did not like this movie, and most of them actually like it a LOT or LOVE it. It is so deep yet so easily presented, so well acted, so well produced, such a universal and eternal message, that I think it appeals to something in every single person. I don't think you could ever go wrong insisting to someone that they see it. Good for you to do your friend a solid by insisting he sees it.

    Well, one thing's for sure, this film inspired me to try life again. I was as down as far as I could go many years ago, I'd lost my way and the drink had took over my life and that's all I had. There was this film and many other films which I would watch over and over again, just to get a glimpse of what could happen if I just tried again. I clung to the idea that happiness is inside each of us, we just have to work for it to get it. We also just have to bide our time to get there, it doesn't happen over night. And it doesn't always last, there will be bad days when the darkness returns, but they will pass as well. I relate to Brooks when he got into the outside world, feeling like he didn't belong and feeling empty. I'm still like that at times, not all the time. And sometimes the hardest thing is just to show up to wherever you have to be. I'm still wanting to end up on the beach, sanding down the wood on a boat, metaphorically of course. I'll get there, perhaps one day.

No matter what it throws at us, it's how we all perceive it deep in our minds. If you conquer your mind you conquer happiness and end up on the beach just like Andy.

    I think my favourite moment, of which there are many in this film, is Red’s journey of discovery, which leads him to the box, and Andy’s note. Even as a free man, Red hunches down behind the wall, and looks over his shoulder when a bird cries out - the reaction to a lifetime of scrutiny in prison, and always looking over his shoulder in order to survive. The journey, to real freedom, that he is about to undertake, is beautifully foreshadowed by the ship on the top of the tin box. Every shot of this film, and this masterful piece of storytelling by Stephen King, is beautifully nuanced. Every time I watch it, even though I know what’s going to happen, I’m always pulling for Red, to find the box, and make his way to Andy.

So many young people in this world need a mentor, a leader to walk beside them and "tell them how things are". I hope this speech would inspire male adults to engage with young, impressionable boys to keep them on a path to pursue honest work,, education, integrity and character. We can change the world one person at a time if we just reach out and try.

    For me at least, the biggest takeaway from the movie is how small actions over time can change your whole life. For the better, or worse. Andy scrapped the wall in silence every night for 19 years and got rid of it piece by piece. And while it was marginal every single day, over time it summed up to getting trough the whole thing. Same is true for everything. If you work, learn or practice something just a little bit every day, it'll add up. Same for the negatives.

    Red is the only man to leave and be able to live free in life and in his mind and spirit, also Red is the only man to admit he’s guilty. He is only be able to live freely because he knows he’s guilty but the hope of the innocent man went before him to pave the way for a new life. This new life is Obtainable to red because he knows his life isn’t innocent and realizes he needs change. Red Didnt just utilize Andy’s release, he used it to shape his life from a New start. Almost as if you were cutting an icing bag allowing the new icing to flow and coat the cake in beautiful sugar. ( the cake being the blank canvas of a second chance ). The second chance was only given because he realized that his hope was set before him, not for him to create and obtain. ✝️

    One clever metaphor used in this film that I believe often gets overlooked is that of a bird. At the beginning we are introduced to Jake, Brooks' bird. One common term used to refer to a prisoner is a "jailbird." later in the film, we see Brooks setting Jake free to fly away and be free. At the end, we see Andy escape to be free. Jake is a perfect metaphor for Andy as we eventually see the bird and jailbird eventually become free.

    • @youthnation1

      Nick Tokar Great catch! I think I first heard this in reading the published screenplay. There's a scene in it, which was cut from the film, where Jake is found dead. Darabont said that he originally planned Jake as a metaphor for Brooks - unable to fly after being held captive. But when he took that scene out, he realized Jake worked as even better metaphor for Andy.

Underneath the floor he can see his exit through the sewage. He knows ahead of time. Stand by Me is based on Stephen King’s “The Body” and “The Green Mile” also portrays a story of good verses evil. The should be considered stories of Faith.

    Something I recently noticed about the movie. We never see anyone come to visit any of the prisoners. None of the main characters have any family or friends who would be interested in them in any way, who could help them appeal their sentences or just visit them?

    Excellent perspective on the film, thanks for sharing that I never would've considered the religious connections otherwise.

    Stephen King, who authored this, is not a believer so I think while the parallels are certainly there, you are imposing them on the film rather than drawing them from it.

    • @youthnation1
      @youthnation1  7 років тому +46

      What would you say about Stephen King's the Green Mile? Would it be imposing a parallel on the film to say that John Coffee (J.C.) is also a Christ figure, miraculously healing people only to be executed as an innocent man. An author does not have to be a believer to know and utilize elements the Gospel story.

    • @El_Hicks
      @El_Hicks 7 років тому +12

      This is more likely. King was perhaps using people's subconscious associations with religious stories to make more of a psychological impact, which doesn't require that HE believes the stories.

    • @youthnation1
      @youthnation1  7 років тому +22

      Definitely. I think King recognizes the power in the Gospel story and uses it for that effect.

      Whether King realised what he was doing or not, God can ultimately work His purpose through anything. This is an incredible reading of the film

    Thank you for the great theme. Andy said it... hope is a wonderful thing... "Set all thy hope in God, and cleave tenaciously to His unfailing mercy. Who else but Him can enrich the destitute, and deliver the fallen from his abasement?" ~ Writings of Bahá’u’lláh

    I watched Shawshank last Saturday after not seeing it for ten years or so. It’s a majestic and beautiful piece of art and offers hope and resilience that you can take with you and dip into long after you leave the cinema. It’s also a film about a friendship that transcends race, without being obvious and patronising. In fact it’s themes are so deep and enlightening that this fact barely registers while you watch the film. It’s as it should be in life, not relevant or worth making an issue out of.
