The New 2021 Audi S8 Is Very Fast. But Is It Very Good?

- In today's video I am driving the recently released Audi S8. An all new car, built with a refreshed version of the mighty 4L V8, the S8 has a difficult job to do - it needs to capture the luxury of the A8, but provide the driving dynamics of a smaller car. Can it do it?

What colour sir?
Well I quite like "morning log brown"

Audi press fleet manager: 😬 wtf why is he standing in a pile of mud for the review...
Too match the colour of the car
@@richardwells1709 Shout out to Hazelborough Wood car park 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I really like Audi‘s understated design language. Some might call it boring, but compared to modern BMWs or Mercs, those are still some pretty nice looking cars!
You call that grille understated?
It will also age better
I like how you wildly generalise entire ranges to try and make a point.
..and appear to have forgotten the hideous over the top fake vents and creases in the RS series, let alone the massive wheels... “understated”. 🤣
Jeez, some of you people get triggered easily...try to get laid from time to time, helps to take the edge off 😳
To put it politely, the car is ugly as sin.
Have to say James you are really upping the game recently with your production and presentation - loving the content variety too.
You all probably dont care but does someone know a method to log back into an instagram account??
I was stupid lost my password. I love any assistance you can give me!
@Jude Steven Instablaster ;)
I'm looking for a car. I want something that will shed £70,000 in no more than 3 years and to maximise my chances of taking a massive loss I'd like it in dogshit brown please.
Haha sad but true🤣
Haha 😂.
He's right you know...
Love it😂👍🏻
same with all of the big brands "luxury model"
I'm lucky enough to have just bought one. A Vorsprung in white with all black trim, having had a 2019 A8. This really puts a smile on my face. I have a TVR Tuscan (2001 - and bought from new) which was going to help finance the S8 but I've decided to keep both as they are completely different beasts. The S8 is awesome and feels so safe. With the A8 (50 hybrid) you were on someone's tail hoping to get by whereas with this you hold back, relaxed and you are ready to unleash Top Gun acceleration that defies belief... I've had 25mpg on a relaxed 100 mile run but typically get sub 20 because it is such fun.... I'm 60 and it is the most complete car I have ever owned, the active suspension is unbelievable. Now, what do we need from the shops?
Can't wait to pick one up for £30k in 5 years.
Would be interesting to compare with the old V10 S8.
Check where Mat Watson drives one, see how he likes the brakes of this thing
S8 vs Bentley video 6m50s
Haha that's what the last gen ones are right now, and I think they look better too!
@@DanLMH They're more powerful too, probably just as quick.
@@DanLMH
V8 engines are better in luxury cars rather than a V10 or V6. It is the sweet point between performance and smooth driving. V8 blocks are far lighter than the likes of a V10 and also far smoother to drive than a V6.
I personally think turbos are not needed in a V8 luxury car and that it is not all about 0-60 times or hot laps.
@@bighands69 I said last gen, which has a V8 ;p
This car will depreciate like a rock! Better for the used car market.
@chris jones there's a 2017 s8 on autotrader for around 35k right now
@@TrollThings247 That's actually insane value though. The S8 Plus has over 600 hp and is essentially as quick as a 458.
Exactly you can buy the old shape S8 for 25k, it’s crazy
@@TrollThings247 there's also 25 to 30k discounts for new s8. Plus every big car drop like brick's. 90% of them will be on a company car lease on monthly payments. So depreciation doesn't really come into it.
Had a 2015 S8 for 2 years on a lease, for £395pcm!!!! (£3,600 deposit). I’ve had M3’s, AMG Mercs - and whilst the S8 was a touch quiet, and impossible to find a space to park it in, it was unbelievably fast. And that was the older 520bhp version. On a driving day in mixed conditions with a Ferrari F12 and a MacLaren, neither of them were able to pull away from S8 by much - through corners, on straights - the S8 is a beast. And it doesn’t only do 23mpg either - it has the cylinder shut off technology so you can cruise on the motorway and get 30mpg. I wouldn’t have another one as there are so many other cars to try but I loved having it for 2 years. It’s a monster with class
You forgot your intro. Please feel free to continue forgetting it. Good review.
Love the S8! Gives off all sorts of Jason Statham vibes from the Transporter! Spent some time in one as a kid, fortunately not the boot Transporter-esque 😂👀
Ahhh Ronin had one of my favourite movie car chases with the older brother of this car. I have to say, it looks surprisingly nimble for a car of that size.
Those 4-wheel drifts were epic af.
I'm also gonna need a nitrous system
Great review Jay. I had a D3 S8 and recently sold my D4 S8 - it's an incredible car a real rocket in straight lines. Sadly this new shape is so underwhelming and unattractive. The amount of touch screens also make it a nightmare in terms of ergonomics. So disappointing
I totally echo your comments on touch screens. I will not be swapping my D4 S8 for this new model.
I cant stand how the auto industry sells touch screens almost as a luxury feature when its a cost downsizing exercise that reduces a lot of practicality and usability as you mentioned
Agreed it's incredibly boring looking
D-2 2001 & 2015 D-4 both outstanding rides in there own right I have both✔mate.
another great video, cant believe this channel isnt bigger :/
Great review! perfect delivery and nicely put together! 👍
Must admit i like your reviews you seem a lot more honest than what some do 👍
Can't get excited by a single modern Audi I'm afraid. They're all differently-scaled carbon copies of each other and their design language is incredibly tedious and seemingly ripped off from the electric shaver industry.
I've found a Type R enthusiast
@@nebsampson8991 if you mean me, then christ no. That's even more of an abomination than the modern Audis
... the new type-r took its design philosophy from the "cover me in sikaflex and ram raid a Halfords" school of thought
Even the R8?
@@ChrisVonBron admittedly that does stand on its own a bit, but even that design hasn't really "revolutionised" since the first generation (which I still think is the best looking R8) I think they've just run out of ideas but know that it doesn't really matter because they could stick the four rings on a dog turd and people would lap it up regardless.
The way James dresses is like when somebody knocks at your door early morning with parcel and your scrambling to get dressed rapidly and just grab anything in site off the floor. Totally care free like a 17 year old stoner haha!
Think he should have made more of an effort for his S8 review 🤔
You came here for a car review not fashion tips
@@JayEmmOnCars 😂👍🏻
@@JayEmmOnCars Indeed I did. It was a good one at that!
As someone who owns one. This one doesn't do it justice. I can look mean with the right spec. I took the 21 alloys and Blacked out the grill and debadged it. And had the brown/red leather interior. Oh and the stage one remap (680hp/800nm) But even before that the car easily breaks 3.5 seconds. Oh and I out Michelin 4s tryes on today so once bedded in will add a bit more.
James, great video as always. I will never own one of these, I'm not interested, yet I find myself watching it for 16 mins here and totally enjoying myself! How do you do it?! 😂
Have a very big soft-spot for this car. Only seen two of the old S8s and absolutely adore them! Shame there aren't any used new ones around. :(
Thanks for a great review. Impressive vehicle. I appreciate your honest perspectives. (From Canada where 4WD is something most people consider (even in classic saloon form)).
Jay great content... but what’s happening with your hair my friend?
Jeez J, Your reviews just continue to get better and better! And all this is unscripted? I’m not even interested in Audis in general, but your spiel was just too good to ignore. You really have come along way since you stepped off that train into that Lotus.
You and Harry M. are the best two UK-based car reviewers by far as far as I am concerned. Keep up the good work - much appreciated.
Thankyou very much. That train was a lifetime ago! The opening of this is scripted - standing by the car - the rest of it is improvised
I'm amazed about the ride. My friend is on his 4th A8 and none of them have been brilliant except his 2nd which was a long wheelbase version.
Great video James. Thanks for your excellent content. One upside to S8s...you can find them superrr cheap used 😁.
Shout out to Hazelborough Wood car park 🔥🔥🔥🔥
It's always that muddy even in summer lol.
Nice paint job. S8...Ronin...its a classic already.
2:33 cheeky robin by the back wheel!
Great write up JayEmm.... this precisely why last year I decided not to buy a turbo/supercharged car and go with 427HP direct injection (non turbo) car and be able to feather the throttle, without having turbo lag and then full on sledge hammer.
Flawed , but I still love it ,great review 👍
I love this thing
Oooozing to be the next James May this guy
At the start of the video seems you were in Doggings delight, some quiet backdrop in the forest somewhere. I drove a fully loaded S8 today back to Ingolstadt. That car had the Bang & Olufsen 3D Advanced Sound System. Sounds amazing...I couldn’t see any ALTs in the dash on the one you have, so you must have premium or standard sound system. I connected really well in the one I drove. I really love the headrests. So comfortable....Another charming review from you. Great stuff...
the taxes and the tariffs on co2 emisions are making the car so expensive to produce that not even the s8 has blindspot monitoring. The infotainment is very cheap to make and develop and that's why they make it look luxurious and modern using it, but the real stuff is missing and if you are looking for a 30 or 40 thousand pounds, premium brands will screw you if you want at least a couple seats
Not everybody wants blind spot monitoring. The vast majority of options on cars are not actually used.
The most important are aircon, entertainment, security and that is about it. Everything else is hard to know what people want hence why they make it an option.
You are correct about all the taxation driving up the cost of cars.
Epic intro
Maybe a series of cars like this vs the same car 20 years ago? Be fun to watch as I’m in the market for a big old fast barge
Would be interesting to compare it with the old V10 S8
Get an old lexus imho
All of the above is stuff I’d love to see!

My dream daily sleeper. Nobody will think much until you use launch control at the lines leaving m3s standing
In 15 years time this will be an absolute bargain. Like with any luxury car I think a supecharger would be better then a turbo.
In 15 years time this will be in the same place as any other 15 year old Audi, riddled with issues to expensive to fix so they get the mileage run back by a few thousand miles and shipped out to Eastern Europe.
Good luck with electrical issues 😂
@@gaara4667 I wish the LS was even remotely as good as this car is as that is potentially a much better used buy 15 years from now
@@gaara4667 You do have a point, I am going through some electrical problem on my X100 XKR. Currently they are just door microswitch related but before that I had some sensors that I needed to repalce. They where cheap but just irritating. I would hate to think what an EV car will be like after 15-20 years.
@@Punisher9419 exactly and everyone is pushing for it for whatever reason. Just because there’s no engine doesn’t mean it’s better
I'm not surprised at the miserly standard equipment and expensive options list, as an Audi owner myself I found this staggering when I first encountered the sheer breath of Audi's miserliness with standard equipment on what are relatively expensive cars.
I wanna be the Audi designer. Just copy the old one and add different lights
Hehe
Looks nothing like the old one tho does it
I bet he works only one day in the week
It's good at everything it does and it should do
Enjoyed the review as always, James. This to me is one of those cars that makes absolutely no sense away from the German autobahn, even then a regular top end A8 you wouldn't be lacking for pace. You obviously can't really begin to stretch it's legs in Britain on our roads before you're losing your driving licence and even then you're not really enjoying it surely because you're so separated from the sensation of speed.
I know it's a class size below but if you are looking for a car like this in the UK then at 100k a BMW M5 would be the one to go for don't you think?
Well it sounds nice for a modern car with (presumably) PPFs. 👍
I love the look of the previous gen S8 (2015 ish) and hope to upgrade to one in a year or so from my 2013 S6. I just don't like the front grill of the new S8. Its just not 'clean' and looks somewhat artificial, a bit like the Lexus grill. Its like they've tried too hard to update the styling, just like the new BMW 4 series grill. They just don't look integrated. I also prefer to interior of the previous gen S8. The new one is too minimalistic & I hate finger smudges on glass. Having just attended an Audi drive day, the RS6 is impressive, but the RSQ8 is the "motherload". It is an absolute beast!! The new interiors do also take some 'learning', unlike the knobs on the previous gen Audi's, which are more intuitive. Thanks for the review!!
When did you change shirts, just asking?
Audi V8 cars do not sound that good on video but in the real world they sound fantastic. They have that low grunting sound that a very real tone to it and no fake crackling.
Could do with remapping i think 🤔
This is one care ti rule them all. It’s everything you could ever ask for and I think it’s way cheaper than the other top of the range German saloons.
But what colour is the boat house at Hereford? Great movie for car chases. Thanks.
A very interesting perspective. I find the S6 incredibly alluring, however I'd still rather have an RS6
Not that it's a competitor,, but I'd be really keen on your take on the M550i
Could you do a review of the audi A6 please
Can you review the top trim of this car.
That Ronin generation A8/S8 looked like a well packaged, compact piece of kit (aluminium space frame nonetheless). This, not so much... what a shame. But then, I sense that all the 7er, S-Class, A8 all went more upmarket at least a notch and became quite a bit more uncommon in Europe. ...Looking at you China and Russia.
Congratulations!
You presented the problems very well.
The gearbox does not synchronize with the engine, it changes gears badly.
Otherwise it is a beautiful car. But for the gearbox, I'll sell it.
Nice job here and you hit on the true downside of the car. It is very fast, but too big and unengaging to enjoy that speed. I had a 2017 S8 and a 2017 911 S. I have no doubt the S8 was faster in a straight line, but just too big to really get much driving pleasure out of it. Not comparing to the 911 for driving, but just that there wasn't enough driver fun to keep it.
The trouble with a car like this is that I used to think “That will be a good buy when it’s ten years old.” A spaceship of a car it is, but all that technology will mean it be never be possible for a ‘middle earner’ to own due to ‘plug and play’ maintenance costs. I’ve got an S8 D2, and that never really costs too much
Wow nice car and that but when can you do more Saab reviews?
When I get offered more SAABs
@@JayEmmOnCars so how it works is you have to be offered them? You don’t go out hunting? I’m excited to see someone offer you a TX or a 9-5 Turbo6 XWD or a Viggen or something cool
@@lordmartinofleithandcuddy6541 no, much better when people come to me
@@JayEmmOnCars where in England are you? I’ll see if anyone on the Saab groups is nearby with anything cool
Nice review sir but I’m surprised car companies are still bringing out big petrol engine cars like this with the likes of Tesla around and the fact that in less than nine years time you won’t be able to buy a new petrol or diesel car perhaps they are just using up existing engines
Perhaps not the best colour choice but, I actually kind like the relatively discreet look of the car. In many ways its like what the RS6 USED to be - Beefy but subtle, and very, very quick. I won't attract all the wrong kinds of attention, unlike the current RS6/RS7 which are brash to the point of being tacky. But geez 2.2 tonnes is bloody heavy!
Almost had a bit of raspberry jam back there
A reasonable review but you did not say how well they have nailed the niche concept relative to their competitors! Audi is way a head of its competitors in terms technologies. In fact, the hot v configuration on the German turbo V8, is AUDI tech.
Can you drive it through rivers like on the transporter
Ronin pure!
RONIN - need I say more. :)
Everyone's your brother till the rent comes due
Having owned most of the S8 models including mk1 D2 Facelift D2 and currently the D3 S8, these are great cars and i much prefer them over the equivalent mercs! However apart from the interiors and luxury getting better the actual design of the vehicles has gone backwards, the D2 and D3 were great designs and very handsome cars then the D4 was less so and more plain and this is even worst!! But no doubt a Great car none the less!!
I also owned a D2 facelift and D3. I'm with you, in my opinion these are the greatest S8's. The D3 for its engine but given a choice now would quite possibly pick the D2. Still think even today the design is absolutely superb.
@@Mikesea777 Yes it's one of the most handsome large saloons ever made in my opinion, I actually loved them soo much that I had 3 at the same time, one green pre facelift and 2 facelift d2 s8s one also green and one silver, my silver one was decatted lowered and had the 20" Gallardo alloys fitted and I owned that for about 5 or 6 years before I part exd it for my current 2006 d3.
Perfect cannonball car
That trunk could hold a whole lot of extra fuel.
I think I get the whole touch-screen thing in this. HVAC controls in a luxury car are an opportunity to differentiate, which is what Bentley does with its organ stops and knurled knobs. Audi can't do that though because then they'd be stepping on Bentley's toes (VW group). No excuse for Mercedes with the new S-Class however, which is what the S8 will be cross-shopped with.
In this segment I'd also be looking at the Lexus LS.
I couldn't imagine buying one of these things new (the depreciation is almost vertical) but surely if you're spending £100k, you really want to feel special and a little bit different as opposed to merely anonymous.
The special in the likes of the S8 comes from owning and driving the car not so much for showing off to the public.
It is suppose to be an understated high end luxury car rather than a shouty sharp looking monster.
When you get older these types of cars tend to appeal to you more. I currently drive a Lincoln Continental and it really goes unnoticed but is fantastic to own and drive. When you buy cars and own them for a decade the depreciation simply has no meaning as all older cars are cheaper.
Relevant people know. That's enough.

Well said sir 👍
Long story short, the point of this car is to be relaxing and fast at the same time, if this is what you are looking for. If not, you can go berzerk in RS6 or even if BMW if it suits you. There is a car for everyone.
If it’s good enough for Jason Statham then it’s good enough for me 😀
Not sure these are really aimed at private owners as new purchases, but as a mile muncher for a company exec they are spot on; I’d love an s8 as my commuter barge and would consider one following a couple of years of the previous owner running it in for me; but the bork factor, a consideration when buying any old RS, M or AMG model puts me off. Not sure about owning one in this shade of ‘dysentery brown’ either... 🤢. Edit: now I’m on autotrader 🙄
Touchscreens in cars are a nightmare. I swear that (semi)autonomous driver aids are purely there so you can operate the radio without crashing.
Those UK verry small B-roads are fun for lil rally cars. But literally england is full of it I guess?? Roads in the Netherlands are so much better imo
While the S8 can be fun to drive it is not the real intention of the car it is suppose to be a luxury car.
Isn't the top of the line one the bulletproof a8?
My god .... couldn’t you have test drive a car with ANYTHING BUT black dark dreary interior .... honestly EVERY bloody car you see these days have black interior ... pity I cannot afford a RR .... they always seem to have such bright fresh colourful interiors!!!
