ABOUT DAVID MITCHELL'S SOAPBOX:
David Mitchell, star of UK TV favourites Peep Show and That Mitchell and Webb Look, brings us his unique perspective on the issues facing men of the world today.
This is the only video series where the youtube auto-generated captions are nearly perfect, such is the merciless precision of Mitchell's diction.
"Merciless precision of Mitchell's diction" sounds like David Mitchell rapping about how sick his flow is. Very chap hop.
Thats more to do with the "recent" (recent for one year ago when your comment was posted) upgrade to googles AI auto-captions.
They designed this voice recognition to work for him and people who sound like him. They just don't bother to train their systems on the rest of us.
He's what I would play pupils as listening comprehensions in English class (learners, not native speakers). It would widen their vocabulary, be hilariously entertaining and if people cannot understand him, they need to practice their English.
I did miss one of his where he was speaking Fench words, but... those were French, ha.
After watching this, I've come to the conclusion that David Mitchell is the most British man on the planet.
Counting down these last 5 years until silver jump suits!
Me too! I hate the hassle of normal clothes.
Don’t get too optimistic. We still don’t have the flying cars and personal jetpacks they promised us.
@@asterix811 well silver jumpsuits might lead to it.
@@janesmith699 I mean, they're probably easier to accomplish than flying cars. Probably
@@2naaa_ car companies will feel pressured once we all wear silver jumpsuits.
In highschool we had an exceptional science teacher who wore the same combination of red shirt black tie and grey trousers every day. When some smart mouth asked him if he wore the same clothes every day, he happily explained he had a dozen sets of identical clothes that he wore in rotation. He was living the dream few dare to attempt. Damn I envy that magnificent bastard.
Wim Widdershins Ahhh, living the dream
@17ll3 x214 emo attire
And every weekend, he flew over to Düsseldorf to take up his *true* identity as a member of Kraftwerk...
One of the IT guys at my school does it, but being that he’s an IT guy no one really notices
I had a professor at university who did the same: blue trousers, white button shirts and black shoes all the way down. Considering she was a woman, it went even more obviously against social expectations, which is always great to see.
David Mitchell looks very nice today. He must have put in a lot of effort to look good.
I think you mean "...into looking good."
wow I didn't think anyone else felt this way about vanity and physical appearance. Nice to see I'm not alone.
I'm fucking terrified of being fashionable. Every now and then I'll see someone looking very fashionable and I'll think to myself "Oh they look so cool maybe that would look good on me" but then i must quickly remind myself that it is forbidden that i wear anything beside a tshirt and tracksuit bottoms
That is exactly my father's clothing philosophy.
When something's good, buy fifty.
Mitchell actually mentioned this on a WILTY episode, that he doesn't like to stand out or to look like he's trying too hard to blend in. With an "of course it's true" for an answer in the end. It's been uploaded on this very website.
What a noteworthy comment :)
ON UA-cam DOT COM ONLINE!??! DAAAMN!!!!!!
"One of the codes I live my life by is that my appearance should be in no way noteworthy; but then again, not so unnoteworthy as to be in itself noteworthy."
classic
"actually"
you should get a green one so your just a floating head
The remark: “Ooh, you look nice” could be a backhanded way of saying you normally don’t put in the effort to look nice.
You looked gorgeous in your new shirt Dave. Good to see you making the effort.
5 years until silver jumpsuits, everyone.
4 years, the dream is almost here
6 months......
...."I've checked with a woman"........
Anyone heard of Tom Scott?
Kyle Netherwood yes! He's brilliant!
Kyle Netherwood and he and David Mitchell have the same shirt ideas
Except David doesn't go around burning his.
I'm glad I checked down a little before commenting that myself.
Tom Scott was how I found out about David, weirdly enough.
It's 2023 in a few weeks, and we seem to be further away from the Silver Jumpsuits are than we were when this video was released.
David you look dashing in this episode. Well done!
you bastard
I didn't notice you were wearing the same shirt.
I did. I thought that he's sticking by the red one because he thinks he looks good in that. :-)
did anyone think David looked nice?
Are you attempting to make him uncomfortable? :P
He looks adequate.
He's not noteworthy, but not not noteworthy enough to be noteworthy
a proper quote would have been better, but still.. nice one dude
@@Dudelsackpfeifer I'd say that's mission accomplished on his clothing objectives.
he constantly nails the most obscure personal thoughts and worries i get lost in overthinking to myself, like this is soo spot on
*his writer does.
This is why I wear patterns I like; as in geometric shapes or designs. Then it's not about how I look but that I'm surrounded by designs pleasing to my eye and that will amuse me when I'm bored. I wear things I enjoy looking at, even if it's me in the middle of it all.
This is terrific. I wish I could explain this exact thing to other people. Perhaps I'll show them this video. I'm a girl, and I feel like I run into this x1000000. I don't wear makeup or jewelry, mostly because 1.) it's cheaper and 2.) I don't care. But that's morphed into this feeling that I CAN'T do those things just because I don't want people to THINK that I might care. While at the same time I think people judge me for not doing such, because it's SUCH a convention for women especially.
I like it when women don't wear makeup outside of nightclubs or Halloween..
Almost time for the silver jumpsuits. 👩🏻🚀👨🏻🚀
HOLY FUCK! HOLY FUCK! HOLY FUCK! WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING DAVID?! YOU'RE WEARING A DIFFERENT COLOR SHIRT?! WHAT THE FUCK?! I CANNOT HANDLE THIS! I CANNOT FUCKING HANDLE THIS! /LogOffLife
In all seriousness, it's nice to have a change of pace. Well done.
There is no possible way I could love this or relate to it more. In every way perfect.
"I've checked with a woman..." Love it!
"Oy clean shirt!"
Couldn’t have put it better myself....to assume I could might be vanity! Lol.
Bull Dog's revenge for being called Imperial Leather was classic, good sense of humour from them there!
Your blue shirt psychologically depresses my subconscious. Your red shirt was happy and had more energy I think.
The irony is that in order to appear in this one video in the blue shirt and not five videos, he actually did change shirt between rants.
I love the Radiation King monitors.
That's supposed to be fantasy? I have five copies of the same outfit.
Doing my duty to note the similarity with Tom Scott on this topic
Why is it men.s clothes are more or less the same shape and size from place to place when women's are not? medium is generally medium wherever you go but not for women, oh no, we can buy the same size in three shops and it could fit anything from an anorexic dwarf to an obese giraffe and all the variations in between. I think this is the reason women's dressing rooms are usually claustrophobic and overpopulated, whereas the men's dressing rooms..? hang on , do they even exist?
The answer is "tits", they come in all shapes and sizes and are not necessarily directly related to the overall size of the person. The variety of tits available on people who otherwise would wear the same size means that there is an equal variety of sizes so that both the small-titted person and the giant-titted person can find clothing that fits their height and arm-length.
kimaboe
Boobs are always the answer!
Mens dressing rooms do exist. They're for trying out trousers
Part of the reason is that the majority of men's clothes are sold by their actual proper measurement, rather than by the various arcane methods women's clothing makers choose to use. A 17 inch neck and a 35 inch sleeve are going to turn out pretty similar no matter where you go.
Some men's clothes are sold as S, M, L etc, and I've found that they vary quite a lot from place to place.
proud sponsors of robert webb's soap box
"He will read anything written on that god damn autocue!!"
This could be about me
I'm not saying that it is; it's about David. but I am going to show this soap box to someone, because it explains myself better than I possibly could.
Three years to silver jumpsuits coming into fashion!
i never noticed '' the shirt''....i watch Mr. Mitchell for the meticulously crafted witticisms....
and boyish veneer:)
You should switch to the blue shirt permanently. It'll improve your mortality rate no end. :P
Only 2 years left and still no sign of the jump suits unfortunately
2024 and no silver jumpsuits yet :(
O, how we miss the silver jumpsuits. It's 2010, we have never been as near the future. And still, no silver jumpsuits.
I have a very limited but comfortable wardrobe where only the colour varies.
Tom Scott actually DOES have a dozen set of the same outfit.
British guys and red shirts just go together
Hold on... David has a special shirt for eating out?!?
Count Penta i see what you did there...
Can strongly relate. I want to look nice but not nice enough to draw much attention to how nice I look, and I'm embarrassed anytime someone DOES notice. And when someone says that I've lost weight, I'm both happy to have lost weight, and mortified that someone might think I was TRYING to lose weight.
David, don't worry so much - you always look wonderful!
@k1r514 That's because David Mitchell called them "Imperial Leather".
I feel exactly the same! but he does slot better at describing it.
David Mitchell is my spirit animal~~
that shirt isnt blue... its storm cloud colour. like a dark purply grey. still very nice. now the blue ones you sometimes wear on QI make you look very nice. blue really suits you ^^
You look like summers lover in season 2 of Rock and Morty and he has a similar sentiment on vanity
Ahhh, vanity. I love (me) it so.
Does anyone notice that the voice over, in the end, says "Bulldog, proud sponsors of Robert Webb's Soapbox"?
I guess I'm becoming more observant, because I didn't notice the thing about the red shirt!
@icewatever That's because he mentioned Imperial Leather during the video. The well known soap, and therefore a competitor for 'Bulldog'. If you're as familiar with British household toileteries as I am, it's hardly rocket science.
Yay! David Mitchell explained my feelings towards clothes to me!
i really like how self-aware david mitchell is, and it's comforting to know that i'm not the only one who puts that much thought into making it look like you haven't really put any thought in
David Mitchell for Supreme Lord of the Earth!
He's got a great head on his shoulders.
I'm actually looking for the silver jump suit
I'm just the same with shoes...I want exactly the same as I have now but without the leaky soles and scuffs.
Reminds me of Tom Scott.
Me too
It's funny looking at 'Would I lie to you' and see the range of shirts and jackets increasing in quality as the series progress.
Expressed an almost word for word identical, self-deprecating rant about myself to myself just the other day! (Crotch-grabbing aside.) But the most acute shame is of course induced from trying "too hard" to look good when it is obvious that you are, objectively, very plain. Dressing up when plain is not only considered vain, but also delusional. (Disclaimer: referring to my own plainness, not DM obviously)
(Also: what's up with the British mancave-background? Was Batcave-CGI also considered "trying too hard"?)
I did notice the red shirt and assumed that it was because he filmed all these in one go in front of a green screen. And then I got on with the rest of my life.
I like David's mind - but he definitely has issues I find hard to understand...
1:41 only 1 year left until silver jumpsuits…
woah woah woah... David, you CANNOT do a soapbox episode in a navy shirt!! It must always be the red shirt!! haha :P
@310BPM
If you knew some of the eagets I know you'd know it wasn't necessary or appropriate. But you are right.
do a old spice advert spoof it would be amazing.
I have 1 pair of pants, 1 jacket, 1 pair of shoes, something like 3 shirts, and far less underwear than what qualifies as an 'acceptable amount'.
I've been like this for 2 years now.
I can safely tell you, I've never been happier.
People are more than just what they look like, but they aren't less. Also, Mark Zuckerberg wears the same clothes every day.
"I've checked with a woman..."
Lads we need to get started on those silver jumpsuits, time is running out
How do you get that shirt so clean?
oh look its clean shirt! howd you get that shirt so clean mayte?
this is one of the best shows on youtube.... totally underrated. nobody does neurotic humor better.... and that includes larry david
What is its rating?
This blue shirt is too noteworthy. It looks really nice. So nice that i'm staring at it thinking how nice it looks.
is that background from fallout? the tv's are called radiation king, the view from the right look like something from the enclave
I wear the exact same clothes every day. It's not that I choose to, it's just that they're the only ones I own.
1:42. I don’t know if there will be much crossover here but anyone think if Brockhampton and the silver jumpsuits they wore during the Ginger tour?
I ve watched all the boxes. Now i ve lost all purpose
I can relate so well to his thought patterns in these.
My clothes are all black. This saves me the embarrassment of having it pointed out that something doesn't match (or it would, if I cared). A friend of mine said he thought that was 'stifling' and that I was basically imprisoning myself within my monochromatic wardrobe choice. I laughed and replied "Not at all! I'm free to do as I please, and I'm wearing what I like!". I find it liberating to not have to labor over the choices of this color or that one every day. I can instead choose my daily wear based on practicality. Warm out? T-shirt.Cold out? Long sleeves it is. Simplified. While others fritter away their limited time in this world, languishing in indecision, I'm out saving lives and/or seducing super-models (you can't prove otherwise!)... :)
Don't you find it inspiring, the way this apparently shy man finds the guts to share himself in this way? Amazing role model. Bravo!
And the red shirt is extremely becoming. I hope the silver jump suits never arrive.
Picking an outfit for life is not the exclusive property of cartoon characters like Homer Simpson and Charlie Brown. Both Steve Jobs and Michael Kors spring to mind as examples of people who decided they didn't want to think about what to wear ever again.
".....I imagine."
Awesome!
Y'can try to look nice without necesarially being vain. Just treat looking nice as a pleasant, nice, but ultimately unimportant and not significantly meaningful thing. A minor pleasantry.
The silver Jumpsuits are only 3 years away guys!
I LOVE HIM
(he also looks and sounds like my history teacher) spooky :3
nice shirt, dave
@ikpts yes yes. I figured it out as soon as I posted that. Hah.
I like that his red shirt is his blue shirt's comrade: get it? Ha!
Still waiting for the damned jumpsuits :(
I know Exactly how you feel David.
he should meet up with tom scott
I stumbled across a T-shirt I thought I looked pretty good in. I now own six of them in grey and six in black and the only things I have to decide any given day are, "Can I get away with a T-shirt today?" and, "Do I feel like wearing black or grey?".
I do kind of feel like a cartoon character when I look at my closet though.
@Dangriff679 because David called them Imperial Leather
I've been wearing the same outfit for so long (blue jeans, tan vest, red shirt) that sometimes I realize, "Other people have to _choose_ what to wear in the morning. It must be awful."
I've just realised he's reading all his lines in front of the camera
