Steve, if you found it challenging from HB videos, just think how many other people even bothered with Base Map updating. HB did not really do a great job. Glad you admitted you had a small interruption but found the answer. You, at least took the time to produce a video that gives a lot more HB users a lot more courage to do these updates on the base maps. Presently, seriously thinking about attempting to do the base map updates.
Update: Just got off phone with Denekka HB CS Awesome person by the way.Turns out that sometimes you need to put sd card in while unit is off. Totally different from videos and instructions..But it worked.

Thanks for the kind words Mike. If you are using a Lakemaster or Navionics card for that area, it’s going to give you better detail than the Basemap. The Basemap will primarily be used for areas that you don’t have an additional mapping chip. The additional chips are not associated with the Basemap.
Upgrade HB Helix 7 chirp G3 . Tried 6 times to get 2.280 software to upgrade from 1.030 software . The 2.280 software file would not load. Ended up trying 2.320 software file, Which was a success . Then loaded new Basemap 2.010 on top of 2.320 software . It works . The depth coverage for Lake Erie ,Ontario side ends near Selkirk , which is no use to me as I do the majority of my boating west of there . Which charts do you suggest for Port Dover to Erieau
Hi Ewen, I am glad you were successful with your updates 👍. The Lakemaster Ontario version will enable you to use Humminbird units to their full potential if you have an I Pilot Link MinnKota trolling motor. With the Lakemaster chip and Link trolling motor you can follow the contour, use circle mode, and full tracking options. You can also use Navionics Plus chips. Both will show one foot contours on Erie. I would give the edge to Lakemaster because I have a Link trolling motor. Both chips will give much better detail than the Basemap.

I have not installed it on my boat yet. When I look at the base map there is no contour lines on rice lake or any other. Am I do something wrong? Do I need to purchase a lake chart? If yes what do you recommend? Lakemaster Ontario. Or when I install it on my boat and get it in the water will there be base contours. I know I can auto chart it but would need to download it to something. Are all Canadians force to buy expensive chart to have a fully functional fish finder? Thanks Ralph
Hi Ralph, this is a great way to contact me. The base maps are going to be limited in Ontario, especially in the Kawarthas. There are some good deals around on Lakemaster Ontario V2 chips as the Premium Lakemaster chips are now available. You can also use a Navionics chip if you choose. The Lakemaster chip will enable you to choose 2 depth highlights, the new Premium lets you choose 4 depth highlight colours.
Yes I do. It will give you the best, most accurate maps for sure. Make sure you get a ZeroLines card for recording anything over 8 hours. It’s a time consuming process and hard to do the whole lake. Concentrate on the areas you like to fish and Autochart away.

If you have lakemaster chip, I would suggest not to upgrade to 2.440 because the depth highlight and shallow highlight is incompatible with the lakemaster chip. Version 2.44 0 that causes this is a known problem to hummingbird. I don't know if you can downgrade to 2.280 to gain functionality of the depth highlight on the lakemaster chip.
Steve great video. I already updated the software version to 2.440 and trying to update the basemap using a SDXC card instead of a SDHC. the unit will not recognize the card. Do you think since I am using SDXC versus SDHC is what is causing my issue?
@@stevechiassonfishing5876 I did 2.280 first then 2.440. The issue might be that I am using a Mac and the sd card was not formatted to FAT32. trying that now.
If you already have the software 2.440 on your helix 7 chirp mega si gps g3n unit and the latest update is 20750 would you still need to download 2.280 before updating to the new software? Also if you have the latest software for the base map 2.010 do you need to download it again?
If you have the latest Basemap software you should not have to do it again. I am not 100% sure as I am not familiar with 20750 so click on the software update information page on the Humminbird website and review what it says.
I checked withHummingbird and was told if your software is newer than 2.280 then you do not need to download the older software . Just download the latest software and load it onto your unit.
I did EVERYTHING Hummingbird said and it still doesn't work. The new basemap is on my SD card and it simply won't upload. Frankly, if Hummingbird didn't make such lousy units they wouldn't have to keep updating and fixing them. I literally would have rather bought a new one that have to deal with this hours long nightmare that won't end. I'm 60 years old and I'd rather be fishing than trying to help their company deal with their own inadequacies.

I saw that one too. In my opinion, you’re further ahead to do the update. Eventually there will be something you want to change and you will be glad you did it sooner rather than later.
Oldest models will have limited updates available. Go to Humminbird website, click on support, software updates, find your specific unit, load onto sd card and follow instructions. Gen 1 Helix 9 GPS is currently 1.900 so you are up to date.
After watching your video, I decided to do my first update. The process was a lot less stressful with you walking me through the steps. Thank You!!!

Great help got it done easy with this video. I was doing a gen2 helix so only could update to 2.280 at this time. Thanks for the help.

The bigger your unit the easier it is to read your maps, especially at higher speeds. General advice is to buy the biggest unit you can afford.

Unfortunately there are glitches from time to time with software updates. I am confident they will fix it with the next update.

My understanding is that the Basemap covers USA waters. You would need a mapping chip for your area.
