One thing you need to know. The depth of water is subtracted from the range out setting. Using your screen for example, you are sitting in 28ft of water with a range setting of 70ft. So objects at the edge of your screen are not 70ft away from your boat, they are 42ft away from your boat. If you were in 5ft of water the objects at the edge of your screen would be 65ft with those settings. Hope this helps, tight lines..!
I think this is actually an incorrect explanation. I was thinking the same, but what we have to realise - fishfinder just measures distance to the object and not the surface distance. Ex - if depth is 28ft, then objects appearing 30ft away on screen are actually 30ft away (28ft down + ~2ft left or right).
Good point. I rarely use SideVu to actually cast to something from SideVu. I will usually use SideVu to find objects, then mark them with a waypoint, then go to the waypoint (object) using a split screen of my Navigation and DownVu. This finds the object 100% of the time, and I don't have to worry about whether the feet to it is completely accurate or not.

I Just started to use the Garmin 93SV on our near-by lakes. No Problems there. We recently had a 3-day Erie trip planned with the family. First day/ first time out, a bright & sunny day,,, we went out of port & around the end of the breakwall, & suddenly the whole screen went black,,, I couldn't see a thing on the screen, & that was the spot where the bottom silt comes up to 2'ow.! That 'GLITCH', BLACK SCREEN, ruined the fams 3-day vacation. We had 3 days to find some eyes, & NOW, NO FISHFINDER!! At home, I called Garmin tec support. I Waited 'IN LINE' for 3 hrs, before I got a return call. The TEC knew about the 'GLITCH', aka lighting problem, & easily guided me through the set-up pages to correct "THE PROBLEM". The next weekend, I talked to 3 other GARMIN 93SV owners at my 75 unit campground, & they ALL experienced the same exact 'problem' & they also had to contact GARMIN to get 'THE FIX'. SO,,,, I'm here to tell you & anyone else who BUYS A GARMIN 93SV, to make sure your unit isn't in 'AUTOMATIC' CONTRAST or LIGHTING CONTROL SETTING! MAKE SURE THAT YOUR UNIT IS SET TO 'MANUAL' CONTRAST LIGHTING CONTROL. Set it around 80%, & go from there. I searched through many UA-cam videos,, & nobody is mentioning this problem. Evidently, the electric eye doesn't diagnose the amount of sunlight that's hitting the screen, & the unit THINKS IT'S DARK OUT! THE SCREEN GOES BLACK.
Oh Ya,,,, one more thing. I removed the Garmin 93SV from it's mounting bracket, in order to take the unit home while I called GARMIN. I figured I needed the SN that's on the back of the unit. With those VERY SMALL positive & negating 12v ELECTRICAL CONTACT PINS, that are on the back of the unit, There's absolutely NO WAY TO FIRE UP THE UNIT when it's out of that bracket!? The boat & bracket were up Erie, & I had the unit at home. Is there an easy, SAFE way to power up this unit, when it's out of the bracket? THANKS,,,,, for any help. ;>)
Not that I know of. I know some people have bought a separate bracket and power cord just so they could mess around with the unit (and make videos) without it needing to be on the boat.
Hello Sir, I'm a new subscriber to your channel, your video series about the Garmin 93SV are very informative. I have learned a lot about how to use it. I just purchased the 93SV and can't wait for a change in temperature so I can get it switched out form my current unit. I'm coming from a SIMRAD GO9 XSE. I'm looking forward to springtime, so I can get out and give the Garmin a go... I mainly fish Lake St Clair for Bass and Musky, I hope this unit and your helpful tips, help me to locate fish better... Tight Lines!!
Great instructional vid with a simple explanation of the processes. Thanks much for making it available as a Garmin of some variety is in my near future.. d:^)
First , I’ll say good video . I can not find where (a place to phyisically go and speak to a person about fish finding eguipment ) also want to know what is the price of what equipment . It would be nice if someone would tell these things . More people whom are not pros would buy if they could speak to someone with some knowledge of garmon or Humminbird .
Hello…I really enjoyed this video plus your follow up on 5 more things to do! I have a 73sv and looking at a lot of how to videos to help my learning curve. I do have 2 quick questions. You mentioned that you were not out on your boat when doing the videos so you used simulation mode using the predefined maps, not actual live recorded data. That interests me a lot since we don’t have enough room to keep our boat home and I was wondering what setup you use. My mounting connections are all on my boat where we store it, but I bring the trolling motor battery home to recharge it, so I was wondering (1) how do you enter simulation mode and (2) do you have another set of cables that run from your 73SV device to your battery to power it? I have the full East coast maps that include 17,000 lakes and rivers and I’d like to review these at home for ideas on where to boat/fish. Thanks for any suggestions…
Hi my latest video talks about how to enter simulator mode and what to do if you can’t find it, so check that out. I also did an “on the water” video where I go over my personal setup. Check those videos out and hopefully they should answer your questions. Thanks for watching.
Give short line trolling a try. I find crappie stacked and hard to catch. I troll over them. The bigger ones hit. Make short troll passes, one pass of maybe 40 yards. Back and fourth even big circles. Using spinners, .5 -1.2 mph. Trying different tails. Works for me..
rob can I run my fish finder in my garage to set up or make changes with out hurting my transducer while in simulated mood.thank. love all of your video I have lean a lot
Yep, I do it all the time. You can also just disable the transducer and still make all of your other changes. Just hit the power button once, then “disable all sonar.” That way you’ll know it’s not hurting anything.
Seems like if you wanted to fish 25 ft deep or any other set depth…instead of setting the color range from 20-30 you could set it at 20-25 and just fish the outer edge of the color blob on the map
Good info but I have a question . In your shading you have 20 30 feet set at purple but when you go to your map I see 24 25 foot not shaded but then the hump at 26 is purple. Why is that? Thanks
Man great Video! Just got my boat that came with a 73sv and I can't wait to get out to the unit and set it up with some of these changes. What mode were you in to be able to do that in your garage again please?
I had the unit in simulator mode. It can be accessed through the system menu. Just be sure to turn simulator off before you go to the water. Thanks for watching.
How does garmin 73sv indcate if i am to close to rocks or hidden dangers under water. Your videos have been very helpful. I am a new boat owner. Eugene Howell
We just bought a Garmin 73CV, but need to power it up in my house to learn how to use it. Can you please help me figure out how to convert the power cable to plug into the house?
You’re welcome. You won’t be disappointed. The only other advice I’d give is that you may be able to find the 106sv on sale still. If so, then that would be the way to go.
According to Garmin’s website, the GT-56 transducer has a max depth of 800 ft for traditional 2d sonar, 400 ft for ClearVu, and 500 ft for Side Vu. The GT54 transducer max is 800ft, 200ft, and 125ft respectively.
I have a 73 sv & a 93 sv w/o panoptic. I was wonder what happens when those are hooked up, which Transducer is going to operate or are they kept separated by each unit. Hope I worded this right.
Assuming you have one at the front of the boat and one at the console, they would each use their own transducer. If you have 2 right next to each other, say both at the console, then you could just use 1 transducer.
@@InstinctBassin Your right, I have one at the bow & One at the console. I'll be connecting them with a Rj45 20 ft. cord. Thanks so much have fun on the water.
I’m going off memory here as I’m away from my boat. But from the chart, go to menu, then overlays and tap overlays so there is a small green box to the left. This shows that they are on. Then you can go back to the chart and hold one down to change it.
Hey great video. I'm in the market and you've help my decision , the 73sv uhd for console 93sv upfront. Hoping you could give a suggestion about which transducer to get
So this is my first boat and my first fish finder/chart plotter. I have the UHd 106sv. My problem is, I dunno wth I’m looking at. I have the transducer mounted on the left rear toon on my pontoon. On the screen is it showing behind me as if I need to fish like I’m trolling? Should I move it to mount on my trolling motor?
On a pontoon, I’d leave it where you have it. But yes, all fishfinders, besides Forward Facing Sonar, show what is directly behind and under the boat. Check out Fish The Moments channel for some great tutorials on how to read sonar…aside from what I have here of course.
Great video and really helpful information. I just got a 2022 Avalon pontoon with the Garmin system, not sure the model in the video but similar to your video based on layout of controls and screens. I use the navigation chart almost exclusively as we just cruise and pull the inner tube. I would like to have depth and water temp on the navigation screen but for the life of me haven't been able to find out if that is possible to add. I typically use the combo screens but that makes my navigation screen so small its hard to read. Please let me know if there is anyway to add the depth and temp to navigation screen. Thanks,
Thanks for watching. Depending on the unit you have, start from the navigation chart. Then menu, then overlay data (or similar). Be sure it’s turned on. The 7x and 9x models will have a small green mark on the left side of the “button” when they are on. Then go back to the map and they should be there. Hope it helps!
great vids!!!! just bought a 94sv and i can not get the depth shading to work at all? What am i missing?? I have everything set up in 3' increments but when i go to my map its always just 1 tone on blue. Any help would be much appreciated!!
Are you using it in lakes or coastal regions? If you’re using it in lakes, that’s probably the issue, since it comes with coastal mapping. Otherwise, check out my FAQ video, as I address it there.
@@InstinctBassin Im using it with preloaded coastal maps. Its a 94sv. I will deff check out the faqs! Diving a little deeper it seems like i may need to purchase a separate package for depth shading. Doesn’t seem too cool on their part considering the price of the unit itself. On my active caption app it says fully up to date 2023. Thanks again for the prompt response!
@@2012Ryan240sx The depth shading should work in coastal regions since that is the mapping that comes with the unit. If you want it to work in lakes, then you would either need the 93SV or the G3 Lake Map card.
Sooo... I got to the bottom of this and it might be some good info for some people. I wanted to make sure to follow up. I contacted garmin which was pretty easy to do. Their exact words are the 94sv offshore edition does not come with depth shading active. They said the on/off feature will appear to function but will not function. A vision plus card is required. I purchased it and depth shading is bow working great! Thanks again for your replys and kick ass vids!
If it’s going on the trolling motor, the GT54 will fit better since it’s shorter. The GT56 may be too long for some trolling motors, depending on where the skeg is. But either will technically work.
Hi this is all you need to hook them together: amzn.to/3C0uEmw Use that link and I’ll get a small commission. Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any other questions.
I have the 7, but it’s honestly a bit small unless you get a high ram mount for it. I think a 9 is a good compromise, but of course a bigger screen is usually better.
QUESTION : If I do all this adjusting with the thing set on DEMO because the boat is not in the water, will it save and use the changes when set to normal?
It depends on which settings you are changing. For instance, if you change the depth shading ranges and colors, or the sonar colors, it should save those. I made most of my changes and saves on the water though.
I just purchased the 73SV for my jet boat, mainly for the charts and navigating as Tampa Bay is pretty shallow in some spots. Before I open the box, can you save a route that you planed such as the ramp to a particular spot and create another route back?
Of course! I will say though that the 74SV is probably a better choice for Tampa Bay, as it will contain inshore maps instead of lake maps like the 73SV. Good luck!
Hi thanks for watching. In the upper right corner, it will tell you how much voltage the unit is receiving. While this isn’t necessarily the same as how much is left, it should give a good indication.
Just ordered a 73SV for my boat, great video man. Appreciate the tips, excited to get it setup. Did you use the swivel mount that came with it by chance? If so how is it?
I did use the swivel mount, and it works well. It just seems a little flimsy, but I haven’t had any issues with it at all. If I had to do it again, I would probably use a Panther mount, or some other that fits over the top of the trolling motor.
@@InstinctBassin I appreciate that. I was debating on just using it or ordering a RAM ball mount for it. I'll give it a shot and see what happens. Just going on the console of my little pro 17 bass tracker. Probably order another or the 93SV later to go up front... Soon as my wife forgets that I just bought one lol.
I believe so, but I’m not sure what changes save while I’m simulator mode. You can also just take it out of simulator mode to make any changes and then put it back in once your changes are saved.
Hey Rob, I am going to buy a 93SV tomorrow for the bow. I downloaded the update for my 126SV last week onto an SD card. Can I put that card into the 93SV to do an update or do I need a new card ? Thanks
Really the best way is to just use the Active Captain app on your phone. That’s the only way I’ve ever updated mine. But to answer the question, I think you will need to download the update for the 93SV. I don’t think they are the same update. But I’ve never used the card to update, just the app.
Yes settings can still be made with sonar off. I always turn mine off when using it out of the water, but I honestly don’t know if it’s necessary. It only takes a couple button presses so I figure why take a chance.
I have a very dumb question I have this I put a ss card in and when I mark a new spot my previous marked spots disappears what am I doing wrong or could you do a video showing how to do this from ss install setup and how to mark
Marking a fishing or navigation spot is different from marking a man overboard spot. That’s why it’s over riding the spot. You can only have one man overboard spot. But you can have hundreds of other marks. Don’t use man overboard to mark normal spots.
Im looking for a unit just to use for the map/GPS, and plan on mounting to my snowmobile for ice fishing. Trying to upgrade from my older handheld GPS. Do you feel the 73SV would be a good one to look at? Based on your video, it looks like the map/GPS is really really nice. Also wondering, on the 73SV, if I am driving out on the ice (or water), will it record the route as travel, and then is it easy to reverse the route to follow it back exactly the way i came out? Thank u, and awesome video btw!
Hi yes it would work for that, but it may be overkill if you don’t need the depth and all the other features. You could just download the Navionics app and use it for GPS if that’s all you need. That would save you a bunch of $ if you just need mapping and GPS.
@@InstinctBassin I dont NEED the depth, but it would be very nice to have. I just want a decent size screen thats easy to read/operate. My handheld is small and not very user friendly. VERY difficult to track backwards on the records track.
@@InstinctBassin Thanks man. Since I wrote that yesterday, I really started looking into the 43CV. Seems like that might be a little more practical for what I am looking for. I wouldnt be paying for all the bells and whistles that I'd never use.

Great video. I am new to Garmin and livescope. Lots of great information I will definitely try! Fish on.

Great instructional vid with a simple explanation of the processes.
Thanks much for making it available as a Garmin of some variety is in my near future.. d:^)

Your videos are so informative!!! Happy New Year!!!
And Happy New Year to you too!
Thanks for watching. The Garmin 93SV is on sale for $699 at Bass Pro. From my experience, Garmin gives you the most “bang for your buck.”
This can for sure be a game changer
Very informative. Thank you sir.
Thank you for the info. It was very helpful
rob can I run my fish finder in my garage to set up or make changes with out hurting my transducer while in simulated mood.thank. love all of your video I have lean a lot
Yep, I do it all the time. You can also just disable the transducer and still make all of your other changes. Just hit the power button once, then “disable all sonar.” That way you’ll know it’s not hurting anything.
thanks rob I do appreciate it.
Great video and excellent info. Appreciate it
Thanks for watching 🤙🏼
Thanks very helpful video, and well done, looking forward to seeing more or your videos, thanks again
Thanks for watching!
Seems like if you wanted to fish 25 ft deep or any other set depth…instead of setting the color range from 20-30 you could set it at 20-25 and just fish the outer edge of the color blob on the map
Best setup video I've seen. Thanks heaps
Thanks so much
Thank You. You just made my life easier.

How do get your data on while on your fishing charts? Like speed, time of day ect..
From the fishing chart, press menu, edit overlays, overlay numbers (hide/show). Press and hold on one of the quadrants to change the data shown.
Good info but I have a question . In your shading you have 20 30 feet set at purple but when you go to your map I see 24 25 foot not shaded but then the hump at 26 is purple. Why is that? Thanks
Never noticed that, but it should shade the whole depth column. It was in simulator, so maybe that’s it. I’ll have to go back and watch this video.
Awesome, thanks...I just bought a 73sv
Thanks for watching!
@@InstinctBassin love the tips for use of the 73sv or 93sv...will make it easier to ise when I get mine
Fantastic break down just brought one.
Thanks for watching!
I was thinking of getting the 73sv for my kayak. But kinda scared that I might break it
It's in sale at bass pro ,get it ,I did 🙌🙌
How does garmin 73sv indcate if i am to close to rocks or hidden dangers under water.
Your videos have been very helpful.
I am a new boat owner.
Eugene Howell
This can be done by setting a shallow water alarm.
Thanks man! Super helpful!
We just bought a Garmin 73CV, but need to power it up in my house to learn how to use it. Can you please help me figure out how to convert the power cable to plug into the house?
I would just plug it into a portable lithium battery. They use them on kayaks and such to make them removable.
Very well done and helpful
great job simple and to the point👏👏
Thanks for watching!
My sonar connector on my cradle has damaged missing pins and cannot show fish finder
Can I just replace that orange female part
Thanks for the video.. im looking to buy the 93sv
You’re welcome. You won’t be disappointed. The only other advice I’d give is that you may be able to find the 106sv on sale still. If so, then that would be the way to go.
*Looks good even in daylight **enjoyable.fishing** recommend it was exactly what it was described to be , works awesome , overall happy with product*
Thanks for watching
Hi,
Do you know what would be the maximum depth that the fish finder can read the bottom and mark the fish? Regards
According to Garmin’s website, the GT-56 transducer has a max depth of 800 ft for traditional 2d sonar, 400 ft for ClearVu, and 500 ft for Side Vu.
The GT54 transducer max is 800ft, 200ft, and 125ft respectively.
@@InstinctBassin Thanks 🙏
@@InstinctBassin sorry, one last question, you know the different of the 73sv and 74sv?
@@Salsuginis Yes, the 73SV comes with built in lake mapping, whereas the 74SV comes with coastal mapping. Otherwise they are the same.
@@InstinctBassin thanks a lot!!! 💪🏻🔥
Please use the link in the description! 😊
thanks very helpful, thats was very good info :)
Contemplating on replacing Lowrance Hook with 93sv
You won’t be disappointed
I have a 93sv on both my bow and Console. How do I get those corner squares reading on my chart setting? Thanks your videos are great and appreciated.
I’m going off memory here as I’m away from my boat. But from the chart, go to menu, then overlays and tap overlays so there is a small green box to the left. This shows that they are on. Then you can go back to the chart and hold one down to change it.
@@InstinctBassin I'll try tomorrow. Thanks so much.
Awesome explanation 😊
Perfect!! Very good info!!
Hey great video. I'm in the market and you've help my decision , the 73sv uhd for console 93sv upfront. Hoping you could give a suggestion about which transducer to get
Either the GT56 or 54 will work great. I have the 54 on both of mine.
Good presentation!!
@@InstinctBassin Thanks for the quick response, will try the next time i'm out
@@timbrown9754 you can also try it with the unit in simulator mode.
great vids!!!! just bought a 94sv and i can not get the depth shading to work at all?
Thanks for sharing 🤙🏼
Nice video. Subbed.
Thanks!
Does this unit use one type transducer or do you need a different one for you trolling motor
If it’s going on the trolling motor, the GT54 will fit better since it’s shorter. The GT56 may be too long for some trolling motors, depending on where the skeg is. But either will technically work.
Hey i have a Garmin 73 sv on the console i will like to add another one on the front compatible w set up i need ?
Hi this is all you need to hook them together: amzn.to/3C0uEmw
Use that link and I’ll get a small commission. Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any other questions.
W screen size recomend for the front 7” 9” 12”
I have the 7, but it’s honestly a bit small unless you get a high ram mount for it. I think a 9 is a good compromise, but of course a bigger screen is usually better.
What color scheme is tht if don’t mind asking
Amber
Great job. Thanks.

QUESTION :
If I do all this adjusting with the thing set on DEMO because the boat is not in the water, will it save and use the changes when set to normal?
It depends on which settings you are changing. For instance, if you change the depth shading ranges and colors, or the sonar colors, it should save those. I made most of my changes and saves on the water though.
I just purchased the 73SV for my jet boat, mainly for the charts and navigating as Tampa Bay is pretty shallow in some spots. Before I open the box, can you save a route that you planed such as the ramp to a particular spot and create another route back?
Of course! I will say though that the 74SV is probably a better choice for Tampa Bay, as it will contain inshore maps instead of lake maps like the 73SV. Good luck!
Or you could purchase a Blue Chart map and still use the 73SV. And the 73 maps may actually be fine, but save your receipt just in case.
I just got my ice bundle unit, how do you check how much battery percentage is left ???
Hi thanks for watching. In the upper right corner, it will tell you how much voltage the unit is receiving. While this isn’t necessarily the same as how much is left, it should give a good indication.
Wow great information!
This is awsome thank you!

Garmin ECHOMAP UHD 73cv, 7" Keyed-Assist Chartplotter can i use the chart plotter side without transducer ?
Yes, you may just get a notice saying it can’t find a transducer.
Rob, since we are not in the water, are we able to make these adjustments and changes to our Garmin while we are in simulation mode
I believe so, but I’m not sure what changes save while I’m simulator mode. You can also just take it out of simulator mode to make any changes and then put it back in once your changes are saved.
Best video I have seen.
Thanks!
Great vid!
How do you get it into demo mode?
Press menu, settings, demo. Be sure to take it out of demo mode before going to the water. Thanks for watching!
Will these settings work on my Echomap UHD 72 SV unit I received with my 2022 Sea Doo Trophy? Thank you
Yes, the 72 just means you have global base map instead of detailed lake or coastal maps. Think of it as a decent, generic map.
Do u make your side scan settings the same the down scan for brightness and contrast?
They are roughly the same. Although I’ll fine tune them on the water.
When making settings out of water should you turn sonar off and with it disabled can settings still be made?
Yes settings can still be made with sonar off. I always turn mine off when using it out of the water, but I honestly don’t know if it’s necessary. It only takes a couple button presses so I figure why take a chance.
Very informative. Thank you.

I have a very dumb question I have this I put a ss card in and when I mark a new spot my previous marked spots disappears what am I doing wrong or could you do a video showing how to do this from ss install setup and how to mark
Hi I’m not sure I understand your question. Do you mean SD card?
Yes sorry autocorrect sd not ss everytime I try to save a mark the previous mark disappears not sure what I’m doing wrong any in put would be great
@@chrischurchman8355 You don’t need an SD card to save waypoints though. Waypoints should save directly to the unit.
That’s what I figured and when I push mark then it says man overboard hit yes it marks it then if I mark another spot the previous spots goes away
Marking a fishing or navigation spot is different from marking a man overboard spot. That’s why it’s over riding the spot. You can only have one man overboard spot. But you can have hundreds of other marks.
Don’t use man overboard to mark normal spots.
Do I have to update the device too get accurate depths of the water?
No you shouldn’t need to
Im looking for a unit just to use for the map/GPS, and plan on mounting to my snowmobile for ice fishing.
Then it would work very well for you. I believe they also sell an ice fishing bundle.
@@InstinctBassin Thanks man. Since I wrote that yesterday, I really started looking into the 43CV. Seems like that might be a little more practical for what I am looking for. I wouldnt be paying for all the bells and whistles that I'd never use.
That is a good unit too, good for jet skiers and small boats. Just be sure to get the echomap version if you want maps on it.
Great video!
