The last picture we see in the anime is the moon in the sky, a reference to how Light’s name was spelt with the character for moon. Light thought he was a God in the sky, but the real moon in the sky brings him back to reality as he lives his final few seconds knowing he was just an ordinary human being who had the power to kill without being detected.
The final scenes of light are some of the most powerful and well composed scenes of all time. You see the regret and depression in his face. Hell, I noticed he goes through the five stages of grief in his death. 1. Denial: he can’t accept that he’s lost when he came so close and screams out whatever feeble excuse he can think of. 2. Anger: still in denial, the usually calm light lashes out in rage, screaming like a maniac. 3. Bargaining: light attempts to end near one more time by using the piece of death note paper in his watch, but fails and can only run. He even screams for misa or anyone else to save him while he writhed in agony on the ground. He’s always had a plan and now he’s trapped. He’s been defeated. 4. Depression: As light runs in the glazing sunset, the look on his face is one of pure sorrow and desperation. With time to think, he reflects on what life could’ve been like for him if he never picked up the death note. As his eyes turn to see his own hallucination/vision, he knows he can’t go back. 5. Acceptance: when light starts to feel the effects of ryuk’s death note killing him, he slowly gazed at the world around him in the last 40 seconds of his life. Light doesn’t curse his defeat or even say another word. He knows what’s going to happen to him. The last he sees is a vision of L standing above him, symbolic of the time he stood over L in his final moments. Light realizes L’s won in the end, even if it was indirectly. The expression on his face changes to a look of both sadness and almost like he’s saying, “I’m sorry”, as his eyes slowly close. Light, once a god, towering above others on skyscrapers, is now resting at the bottom of the stairs, covered in his own blood and wounds. It’s the perfect image of one who has fallen from grace. There is no true salvation for those who try to play god. Only oblivion. True poetry that the series expresses perfectly in just 22 minutes.
Perhaps L's Past wasn't really sad on its own. But the fact that we hear it when Light is running and lamenting his past, scared for his life and regretting everything he has done with the notebook, that is what makes the song so sad. To know it was played during one of the saddest moments of the entire series is what makes us think it is a sad song.
So many people discussing how they wanted/didn't want Light to win, but that really serves to strike home the main theme of the series. That he was such a talented, intelligent, charismatic guy - but in the end, absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Yea, in the scene where he was running away from the task force to his death, he runs past a younger version of himself, one that was not corrupted by the Death Note. But that brings up the argument, was Light an evil person waiting to be set free or did the Death Note turn him evil.

The whole song feels like light desperately trying to create glory for himself despite his inevitable death and the song keeps building as if it’s hesitant to end much like light himself, even as he bleeds out in a decrepit warehouse the music in his head is how he views himself and his reign as Kira
Honestly, I was never on Light's side. But I felt so sorry for him. He had so much potential, he could have been one of the world's greatest detectives, if only he hadn't found the Death Note. And I think that was why this song struck a chord with me, because I interpreted his final face as one of regret.
+CeriseApple I totally agree with your comment. He had true potential, and it was wasted. Though personally, I was on his side until he got Rem to kill L. And it wasn't even because he got him killed... It was because he just HAD to smirk at him and basically tell him, "HAH, you were right all along. You screwed up." After that though, I definitely agree. Light went insane, and he got very sloppy very quickly. He would kill all in his way, and even disgrace his own father prior to his death. Little did he know that ending L would seal his own fate.

The part from 1:50-2:06 just gives me chills man. That signature Death Note theme heard one final time through a sombre string variation. Just so good.
and watching his eyes in his final seconds, his look was very special, in my opinion like feeling sad because of how he ruined his life because of the death note and wanting to carry out his ideals... such a sad moment
One of the few scenes in an anime where I actually cried. Light's character was so well-written, and he's one of my all-time favorites. Death Note was (and still is) a masterpiece, with the ending being true perfection.
It's a testament to how powerful this anime is in its characters and how great the soundtrack is that it can make me cry every time I listen to this even after so many years.
I remember watching the original English air on adult swim all those years ago. Now I’m in japan on navy on navy orders and I sit in awe. Life is so precious. You never know what little, insignificant experience will lead to life changing experiences
The ending is truly a masterpiece. I don't get why some people don't like it. Moreover, the final scene where it was shown how murders took place on a great extent after Light's death is like the icing on the cake. This shows that nobody truly emerged victorious in the end. A better world could not be created, and after Kira's death, the Earth became that same rotten and disgusting place as before......
This song is perfect for the ending. Just silence as this song plays looking at lights dead body. When it pans to the sky it adds closure to the whole story.

Brilliant and emotional piece of music. I love how the main theme (Kyrie) emerges at the very end and then calmly concludes. I really enjoyed Death Note. Could anyone suggest another anime with a great soundtrack?
- Neon Genesis Evangelion OST (both rebuilds and original) - Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou OST - Kakegurui OST - Saiki Kusuo no Psinan OST - Akagami no Shirayuki-Hime OST - Blue Period OST These are some suggestions.
For you music junkies out there: I noticed that Ryuk's theme appears for the last time at 1:50, except that it's not in the usual D dorian; it's in D mixolydian with the motif starting from the dominant, A. I think this is a 'brighter' harmony (with the major 3rd, F# inside), representing a feeling of realisation dawning upon Light, or rather the acceptance of his death, knowing that Ryuk has finally written his name. There may be diffrrent interpretations of this, but that's what I feel, at least. Light finally accepts that Ryuk has been right all along: the death note brings misfortune to its human user. After all, no matter how brilliant your mind is, you're still a mere human being. A mortal. Mortals should never, and can never play god, I guess. The only reason Light could attempt to play god was because of a real death god, anyway. The death note was never meant to be used by a human (but Ryuk was just bored lol). The story starts with the shinigami Ryuk, and ends with the shinigami Ryuk. Such a fitting ending.
I’m a little bit confused. Aren’t they in different keys? Your explanation showed it like the whole Coda song is in D Dorian and it switched to D Mixolydian at the ending but that’s not the case. The entire Coda is in D Mixolydian and when you compare Coda’s ending with D Dorian Kyrie, there’s no interval change of such. Simply changing the key and not the intervals won’t give you a different feeling, I must say. At least in TET. Even with this, it seems to have a different feeling to it. Until the ending, the melody wanders around D and that’s what gives the song its Major-ish, kinda sad feeling. And then at the 1:50, it uses the mode from A and that’s why it has a different feeling. All I’m saying is there’s no difference between Kyrie and Coda’s ending besides key. It’s the “song” itself that gives it its exotic feeling.
1:50 I listened to this sequence every day for a week just to remember what a wonderful anime I finished... Looking at L how he already know when he is gonna die
This song always brings up deep emotions...sad ones...I get teary-eyed around the 0:20-0:30 mark...such beauty I remember hearing this song during a heartbreak of mine and this always surfaces that. Emotional pain suxs but man is it good to feel it though.
1q2w3e4r5t SAME. Everyone who I’ve met in real life who has seen this anime don’t agree with me, but I wanted Light to win even though I knew even if he defeated Near, another opponent would’ve appeared which would be better than the last.
I feel like this piece serves as a bitter sweet requiem for what probably started as Light’s noble intentions that eventually turned into a twisted sense of justice. This piece captures the nostalgia that we all shared when thinking about Light at the beginning of the series.
This is so beautiful. At age 27 all ima say is when I watched Death Note and when this scene and song came up, I let out tears. Honestly I wish I had a girlfriend like Misa
when you put a rainy mood on the other tab you can deeply imagine L standing on the top of this building in the rain when Light comes to talk to him...so nostalgic..soo much feelss
I want this song in my funeral when i die by a heart attack at 65 years because i have high cholesterolemia which will make me get a terminal heart disease at the mentioned age but nevermind, i consider myself i lived enough at 65 years.
no if that happens light will get sent to prison and ryuk will be bored even more. thats why (SPOILER) ryuk killed light. even if light came back to life he'd probably want to stay dead because near already defeated him
There was a new manga chapter released a few days ago, it's basically about how Ryuk brings a new Note to earth, but sadly the new owners plans get finished pretty quickly.
Brilliant ending to this masterclass of anime. Sad as hell for the deaths and the general tone of the last episode, but if you take a step back you’ll realize that Light won and the world has definitely changed because of his actions. Changed for the better ? That’s up to you to decide. Bravo !
Also something that bothered me lately... Misa's death. She knew that light was dead. She loved light. But light just used her as a puppet. I mean hear her last words: But what happenens when i know it all. Im sorry for her am i will always have bad valentine days form now then
this would be better if light just become partner with L for crime investigation instead of cleansing the world with death note, he even killed L who thought him that he can be his best friend
The real people who lost here are countless of families' lives that lost someone a loved one who was still on the process of being cleared up for their crimes. And the people who lost the most, Light's family. His mother, now a widow who cannot hold onto a family that lost so much. Even the person she loved the most, her son and husband. She still lives on with her daughter, Sayu, who grieves with her. His sister, who often looked up to him as a role model student as she often asked Light for help in her math assignments now suffers mentally due to the loss of her loved ones. She admired both her father and her brother for their ways of seeking justice and dreaming that Light will be a great detective like their father due to his intelligence. And now, the grim news would come that Light was the murderer known as Kira. The family now, would be in chaos knowing that their son whom they loved, thought about killing the evil of the world that it has gone out of control and even got his father to be killed in the process.
Light's identity as Kira was never revealed, so at least his mom and sister can rest, thinking that he and his father sacrificed themselves in the name of justice in order to take down Kira.
Imagine people who stopped watching at episode 25, they’ll never know how beautiful the ending is.

Before someone throws s*it about him, i wanted to write something.
I couldn't be agree more :")
I was about to say something honestly but then I realized the original comment was made by Kira himself! I better not!
This soundtrack never fails to make me cry... 😢💔
Brilliant and emotional piece of music. I love how the main theme (Kyrie) emerges at the very end and then calmly concludes.
I really enjoyed Death Note. Could anyone suggest another anime with a great soundtrack?
I know I'm late, but Jojo's Bizarre Adventure has a stellar soundtrack aswell. Attack on Titan is also something I recommend
ig im really late but cowboy bebop has a great soundtrack
Bleach has a crazily good OST as well, Shiro Sagisu at his finest
- Neon Genesis Evangelion OST (both rebuilds and original)
- Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou OST
- Kakegurui OST
- Saiki Kusuo no Psinan OST
- Akagami no Shirayuki-Hime OST
- Blue Period OST
These are some suggestions.
Such a fitting ending.
thanks
u deserve way more like
I have no idea what you just said but I feel like I just realised something that I really didn't
I thought the same thanks bro
1:50
I listened to this sequence every day for a week just to remember what a wonderful anime I finished...
Looking at L how he already know when he is gonna die
1:51 This music with the moon reminds me of a harry potter ending.
This song always brings up deep emotions...sad ones...I get teary-eyed around the 0:20-0:30 mark...such beauty I remember hearing this song during a heartbreak of mine and this always surfaces that. Emotional pain suxs but man is it good to feel it though.
Does anyone else feel like crying when you here this song
i feel you pain
the way the ending of this show had me contemplating life dog...
same
1:12 L's spirit.
1:51-2:17 one of the best parts cause it is the theme of kyrie
1:51 Unironically the best melody I have ever heard
it was sad seeing L and Light both die. :'-(
this song is so beautiful
Light was my favorite no matter what.. All he wanted was a peaceful world where people live happily without commiting crimes.. RIP LIGHT
1q2w3e4r5t SAME. Everyone who I’ve met in real life who has seen this anime don’t agree with me, but I wanted Light to win even though I knew even if he defeated Near, another opponent would’ve appeared which would be better than the last.
With this logic, Pucci from jojo’s bizarre adventure is the good guy. I routed for light, but that doesn’t mean I agreed with him.
But fucked up along the way
A peaceful and perfect world where everybody can live perfectly is impossible, at least in my eyes.
I feel like this piece serves as a bitter sweet requiem for what probably started as Light’s noble intentions that eventually turned into a twisted sense of justice. This piece captures the nostalgia that we all shared when thinking about Light at the beginning of the series.
That musical phrase... Just... Can't... Even... Words couldn't describe.
The flute part makes me cry everytime omgg 😢😢😢
1:30 I don't know if i should be happy right now, or if i should be sad right now.
Picture adds to the sadness of the song :( We love you L...
What a magnificent song. Fantastic use for the ending
ost of my life
1:50 gets me every time
the flute and the piano damn it
Always a mood changer
Death note is my favourite anime. Nothing can replace it.
L was my favorite character, at the end it was nice to see him in the credits
It hits different even when you have watched the anime for like fifth time
My life is going fast I know this anime 9 years ago
light was my favourite character even if he became a sadistic killer, rip dude that was funny
This is so beautiful. At age 27 all ima say is when I watched Death Note and when this scene and song came up, I let out tears. Honestly I wish I had a girlfriend like Misa
This show breaks my heart.
when you put a rainy mood on the other tab you can deeply imagine L standing on the top of this building in the rain when Light comes to talk to him...so nostalgic..soo much feelss
after all this time I'm still crying...
I want this song in my funeral when i die by a heart attack at 65 years because i have high cholesterolemia which will make me get a terminal heart disease at the mentioned age but nevermind, i consider myself i lived enough at 65 years.
Pure art. I love this song... With this ending.
Its my waking alam for many years
Misa didn’t deserve any of this
1:31 Best Part
i hope ryuk will gonna get bored again and bring back Light
“all humans eventually die"
“once dead it can't be undone"
when they die they go to MU
(nothingness)
I hope ryuk will gonna make you learn proper english.
+The Fabulous Fangirl dude i didn't wrote it i copy paste it
no if that happens light will get sent to prison and ryuk will be bored even more. thats why (SPOILER) ryuk killed light. even if light came back to life he'd probably want to stay dead because near already defeated him
There was a new manga chapter released a few days ago, it's basically about how Ryuk brings a new Note to earth, but sadly the new owners plans get finished pretty quickly.
Im sorry for her am i will always have bad valentine days form now then
To this day I wish they didn't die did anyone else cried at the end
RIP IN PIECES LIGHT YAGAMI
Ya pasaron 10 años desde que fue publicado el vídeo y la sigo escuchando ;-;
x2 :'v
it's to show you that this is the end of death note...very beautifull song..!! and favorite anime..:D
Me: on L's and Near's side
also me when Light dies: *insert crying person*
when I ever want to end it, this will be the last song I listened to before I died..
The last part that Riuk appears, that plays this part of the song is perfect !
its like the ending of everything!!!
i just feel sad
Aklıma takıldı bu müzik bulamazsam çıldırırdım, buldum mutluyum. :)
:")
It's 2020, and I still trying to live.
2022, maybe it's over
2024, always a restart... Or a real start.
These comments are making me tear up ;-;
This ost made me sad but when they brought back the main theme of the anime that made me cry waterfalls
This theme song is so beatfull
Real masterpiece does'nt exis-
Seeing L’s spirit watching Light’s fate got me in tears. Especially with the change in the score.
Omg so true. That scene hit me right in the feels.
this would be better if light just become partner with L for crime investigation instead of cleansing the world with death note, he even killed L who thought him that he can be his best friend
Seriously this is awesome
The police said to lights family he died catching Kira, they never knew he was Kira. Which is good and sad at the same time
Awesome Death Note Coda Video.
Wonderful ❤
Imagine stopping at ep 25
I want this in my funeral
