An interesting thing I noticed while watching Death Note that I haven't seen brought up is that all three of the leading detectives we see in the series, L, Near, and Mellow, each have their own small tics that they do, and each have their own small quirks that they do. L's tic being sucking on his thumb, which we see him do on occasion, Near's tic being twirling his hair, and Mellow's being eating chocolate. L's quirk is eating sweets, and Near's quirk is playing with toys, however Mellow appears to either simply not have a quirk or his quirk also being to eat chocolate. Also note how only L and Near do the weird sit that L says raises his deductive abilities, while Mellow never does. I don't know if this means anything, but I found it interesting given how L and Near were the only ones to get close to catching Light, with both considering him a suspect soon after he came into the picture, while Mellow never even came close to catching Light or having any idea who Kira could be, or that there were more than one person carrying out Kira's actions, which L and Near suspected almost immediately after they (Misa and Mikami respectively) came into the picture. Again, not sure if this has any actual bearing on who was actually smarter or the better detective, but it was something I found interesting that I haven't really seen brought up, so I thought I'd mention it.
I know you hate Near, but let me explain *why* He was less human and got less screen time compared to Light because of L. Light had a massive ego at that moment, and Near was insanely suspicious of him. The reason L didn't get Light was because he was human and became friends with Light, sometimes telling him his plan, causing Light to formulate one.
