I personally have fallen for this song; it's so beautiful, in a creepy, ethereal way, but you can't help but love it. Suits Light rather well, and his counterpart. Kira-sama.
Kyrie eleison, christe eleison, litteraly means God show mercy, Jeasus Christ show mercy. Comes from ancient greek, but we still use it as it is. kyrie, without the capital letter means mister. nowadays instead of eleison we use eleise. It is frequently used in prayers of christians and it's definitely NOT Latin :)
People should put in their heads this is called GREGORIAN chants (being "gregorian" a word derived from "greece" or "greek"), otherwise it would be called Latin chants or so
Pedro Victorino The word "Gregorian" is derived from Pope Gregory I, who gathered and standardised the body of chants used by the Roman Catholic church. He was also the one who added the phrase Χριστέ ελέησον. Κύριε Ελέησον is probably the oldest plainsong used by the Eastern and Western Churches and the phrase predates Christianity.
this anime has something special i didn't felt in any other media of anime, movies, series. Death Note is amazing in soundtrack, script, and characters. Almost a masterpiece
Imagine if Light wanted to do exactly the same thing as Lelouch did in Code Geass, but he never got the chance because he lost... Imagine he knew from the beginning Ryuk would kill him the moment it gets boring, and that was the reason he never wanted the shinigami eyes... Imagine that Light wanted to purify the world and the moment he was finished he'd expect Ryuk to kill him...
Epsilon Well that would totally ruin the story. Code Geass was a good show but was so over the top idealistic. One of the reasons I like Death Note is because it pits two philosophies that have their own strong merit, and yet are imperfect with pitfalls, against each other, and the author allowed for both to make a strong case, did this so well that there are both Light and L fans and the debate can continue beyond the anime in terms of raw philosophy. Whereas Code Geass was more of a fantasy self-insert of "I am so much smarter and more righteous than everyone else and the world will magically prove me right against all odds in the end."
GorgonNine Wow man you interpret things quite bad, what strong case? _You_ simply replying to my comment is a contradiction to what you just said, you say the writer wanted to give us two strong philosophies where in the aftermath fans could still debate who's philosophy was right or wrong, or what your ordinary UA-camrs would say _was Light evil or not_ , yet the outcome I stated is the only one that could actually prove Light to be a good person, because you know someone eradicating so many lives and becoming god at the end is nothing that you can debate around, with other words Light's philosophy is plain and simply *WRONG* , Light was shown as pure evil, where is the strong case behind that, even the writer said he was a good person that fell victim to the Death Note and became evil, in other words his philosophy is wrong, and you come up to me and try to debunk what I just said, so where is that debate you told us about if you come simply and say "No that's not it LIght is evil"? Light's philosophy might have worked out in a different way if he actually just wanted to eradicate all criminals, but him trying to become god is a different thing, there's nothing controversial about that. Also how is Code Geass idealistic? You think people like Lelouch don't exist? Code Geass completely changed the term _anti hero_ . And having a character that comes in all sorts of shapes and colors is much more interesting than having literally good and evil constantly battling with no actual ending or conclusion, the difference between Death Note and Code Geass as stories is that Code Geass is much more focused on the protagonist, because every message, meaning or whatsoever is delivered to the viewer through the protagonist, where Death Note is simply based on conflicts. Therefore Code Geass is much more stronger and sturdier, Code Geass would still have a strong story and message if you take out Lelouch's father, but Death Note wouldn't have anything if you take out L.
+Hydrogencar Hellow by killing many innocent people in the process we all remember the Narita Mountain incident as well as the Japanese Massacre. In other words Lelouch was fully aware of the consequences of his actions and knew there would have to be sacrifices. So the way Lelouch tried to unite the world was not any better than his brother's method of uniting the world through the use of fear in a weapon, however, Lelouch modified the plan by putting all the attention on himself because he knew no matter what he would have to atone for the sins he already committed. Lelouch you can say took his fate more willingly than Light did in the end. So when it comes to who is more just I guess you could stretch that Lelouch truly cared about the world but so did Light to the point that he wanted to be the judge, jury, and executioner for the world.
Its 2012 im just started high school and friend of mine showed me this anime. One of my most found memories from teenage years. Whenever I hear this ost I get powerful nostalgic sensation. I miss those care free days
Well, I wouldn't go _that_ far. He's a man of great conviction, given means to change the world, with balls enough to go for it and brains enough to keep it up.
The day has finally come when I realize my appreciation of this anime has transformed to somthing greater. I used to be able to motivate why I was so fond of it, but I have now come to another conclusion. I have become a fanboy. I used to shiver at the thought of it being a possibility, but as reality finally caught up with my delusions, I am surprisingly indefferent about that fact. This anime has slowly seized to be a rational part of my life, and has entered a realm of divine imortality, where no criticism can ever hope to reach. Even though I do realize the existense of its several flaws, they all fail to change my viewpoint on the matter even in the slightest. My god, this series is good. If only something were as complete as this, I could die in peace. As for now, my journey will continue towards its nonexistent end, and I will remember this as the absolute peak of my insignificant life as an anime viewer. Thank you Death Note, for you have showed me the light (and the L). Yours sincerely, Levi Page
+Levi Page I completely feel this too. Even if someone were to write me an essay analysing each of its flaws in depth I would continue to believe death note is the best thing. I honestly havent met anyone else with such a deep love for this anime until now and I love the way you have managed to articulate my thoughts about this in a way I couldn't myself.
_Lain Wow, I did not expect a response! Me neither, which has always baffled me, since to me it wouldn't be weird at all for people to share my weak spot for it. However, I'm glad you liked my take on it, and I meant every word of it. Although I have found some consolation in a few other shows, no one has even come close to how I experienced Death Note.
_Lain I do, but I won't know if we have the same taste in everything though. I'm SirLevi on MAL if you want to find me. The series I can recommend based on your love for Death Note are in order 1. Code Geass 2. Monster 3. Future Diary I think you will like these if you haven't seen them, but I can't say for sure you'll like the rest of my list :) Code Geass in particular has very similar feeling to Death Note, so I highly recommend that. Hope that helps!
Levi Page ooh thank you, i've seen code geass and monster both great shows. Although for some reason i've always avoided mirai nikki. We rate things quite differently but I still enjoy looking at your list :')
Kyrie II is one of my favorite if not my favorite song from the soundtrack. It's enchanting, quiet, but at the same time dark and suspicious. Kyrie I and the orchestra version are also amazing.
Light commits a Crime and the kyrie Eleison kriste Eleison( lord have mercy ,Christ have mercy) echoes in the air. Has he no guilt in his mind, but has guilt in his soul!!!
+Black Wings gantzllat Roughly speaking? Christ is the anglicized version of Kristos. The direct translation is literally "anointed one". The greek word Christ in the Greek NT scriptures is used synonymous with the hebrew word Messiah/Moshiach, with the CH as a guttural not a dental. Messiah/Moshiach, like Kristos/Christ, translates to anointed. Anointed one/kristos/Moshiach refers to the anointing of a King over Israel. This makes sense with the beginning of the NT in Matthew firstly referring to Christs lineage and how it tracks back to the Anointed David, meaning the purpose for Jesus being called Christ is because he is suppose to be the rightful heir to the throne of David. This is decided by the means of context, because the High priest of the temple is also anointed. Furthermore Biblically Christ not only is a 'christ' to be king over Israel and Judah, but also for High-Priest hood; a King-Priest. This is also why Melchizedek is meant to be an ante-type for Jesus in the scriptures, since Melchizedek was both a king and a priest. Welp, i just realized i went on another one of my rants. I could probably go on for pages upon pages concerning the Greek word Kristos and it's Hebrew counterpart.
now i realized why we stop use sarcasm on internet XDD dude, that is something obvious, the word even sound similar. Is not necesary to be an expert on old greek to realice that. Or maybe is like that to me caouse my mother lenguaje is spanish, so some words on latin and greek sound pretty similar caouse come from the same source. For example, we say Cristo Instead of Christ. Wath sound exactly like Kristo from greek. For that, for me is something really obvious XD
Sorry. I just became intrigued by your comment. One thing lead to another and i ended up typing a short essay on my understanding of the word. It actually helped me process a bit, since i'm currently studying NT Greek under a Mentor.
Well I am fluent in Greek and it took me forever to realize that in the song he is saying "Christ have mercy [upon us]" (Κύριε Ελέησον), so if someone doesn't realize something as obvious as that connection, I guess it's not too bad ;p
I just had my first uni lecture, learning about music in the medieval church. The tutor played Kyrie Eleison (which I believe is Greek for lord have mercy). I immediately recognised it from death note though 😂 It's pretty cool the similarity between Kyrie "lord" and Kira. Especially when light says he (Kira) will be the lord of the new world. Such a suiting song choice
Wish Ryuk was attached like Rem was. After everything Light went through changing the world it wouldve been cool to see ryuk write the name of everyone in that room in the last episode and sacrifice himself and see Light make his new world but instead we saw Light had completely lost for the first time. But the ending was still awesome
Nope Ryuk is as selfish as light And he is God why would he kill himself for a psychopath who think himself as a God but in reality is nothing more than a murderer
Why would Ryuk do that. Dude was just bored and wanted to have some fun, all the hundreds of people that died was because Ryuk was bored which I love lol. He's a god, why would he go out of his way to help and save a psychopath that from the day he got his hands on the death note gained a god complex and went on murdering spree. In the end, Light died crying like a bitch, a pathetic and disillusioned death. The inevitable but very fitting end for a pathetic human being.
I was kind of sad. Light's story was very sad to me. Though I'm not saying he wasn't evil, but he was definitely a genius and a very, very well written character.
man, it makes it so . . . wow, knowing those are the lyrical consequence, btw, do you know any gregorian chants as good as this? this is dynamically better then ones ive heard ...

This gives me chills when I listen to it… But in a good way!!
Yep, yep, I totally agree with everything you said…. I cried a lot at the end...

As a greek this makes it sound like Light is the actual god of this world. Kyrie = God = Kira . Very fitting for this amazing anime.
kira means killer tho
@@sanjaikrishna7107yup better thaan rice bag
Epsilon I'm not going to read this whole ranting wall of text. You seem to be very strongly opinionated and that is fine.
Epsilon Yes, you are correct. That actually makes a lot of sense.

I've studied this song in the past for a choral performance. Yes, it does mean that.

Oh, come on. Light fancies himself a god, the religious connotations are appropriate.

Yours sincerely,
Levi Page
I know this is random, but do you have an anime list account by any chance ?
_Lain I do, but I won't know if we have the same taste in everything though.
I'm SirLevi on MAL if you want to find me. The series I can recommend based on your love for Death Note are in order
1. Code Geass
2. Monster
3. Future Diary
I think you will like these if you haven't seen them, but I can't say for sure you'll like the rest of my list :) Code Geass in particular has very similar feeling to Death Note, so I highly recommend that.

Has he no guilt in his mind, but has guilt in his soul!!!
my lord, have mercy, oh christ please have mercy, lord have mercy of us"
roughly speaking yes

I immediately recognised it from death note though 😂
It's pretty cool the similarity between Kyrie "lord" and Kira. Especially when light says he (Kira) will be the lord of the new world. Such a suiting song choice
