I love how the film was made in 2000, but could have easily passed off as an 80s movie.
It was based on the 80's.
The book's set in 1989, whereas the movie takes place in 1987. That's not very long before the year 2000! When did the '80s nostalgia craze start anyway? Not that the movie was based around that.
Imagine if it had been made in the 80s
Honestly when I first saw the film and later found out it’s release year, I was surprised. I really thought it was shot and released in the 80s.
It was made in 2000!!??
This movie is so good. I've argued that Christian Bale should've been atleast nominated for an oscar for this role.
Totally agree, his performance was absolutely fantastic.
The Oscar's are corrupt anyways
Some of the all time greats never get an Oscar, it very political and if you have the money.
To early in his career, he didn't know any of the judges yet
i heard that his performance was actually based on Tom Cruise´s scientology interview...
Christian Bale as a Sociopath is amazing.
Also this movie could be about the loss of Sanity.
Psychopath is the correct term. Sociopath refers to those who lack understanding of standard social norms but not necessarily violent.
I think i've read somewhere that Sociopaths only cares about babies and animals such as cats and dogs cuz they represent innocence . If that's correct then Patrick wouldn't be one , since he killed a dog and tried to kill a cat . Again i could be wrong .
@It’s blitz it helped , thanks for the clarification .
Maybe... He was already a psychopath in the beginning though
@@nonsmellaoverlord he is a sociopath not a psychopath... he didnt kill, harm or hurt anyone.. he is just a self centered sociopathic narcissist and the verge of a complete mental fracture
I got the impression that Bateman needed the “ambiguity” he was going through in order to commit the murders. That’s why he broke up with his fiancé, she never got his name wrong.
As well as his secretary in his world they were the only people who had a notion of what he was and he himself claimed there was no Bateman so they probably help ease the psychosis which is what makes him so miserable
He didn't actually murder anyone. He played out the scenarios in his imagination. The book goes into more detail and drops hints that he is mentally psychotic, not physically.
@@CodeNameV13the best actual evidence for this is paul allen being alive and the Rampage scene where he blows the cop car up with a few shots from a pistol
When the Joker finally breaks the Batman.
lol
He made him realise that he lived in a society.
Ironic, considering Batman, Joker, and the Green Goblin, characters known for playing mental games/ have mental issues, are in this movie.
Let see Joker's Business card
-Bruce Wayne
Maybe it was already written in destiny.. but take out the E in Bateman..
Funniest bit to me is when he looked at Leto's card, and was like Oh my God and proceeded to have an existential crisis, even laughed at when he killed leto, try getting a reservation at dorsia now 🤣 🤣
It's so absurd!
Think about what he will think if he was in 21st cemtury and had a facebook page.
Give the book a shot it makes much more sense there and his decline isnt as rapid
3:12 the director specifically said everything is happens, and the entire town are really fucked up and willing to cover murder for him, since he's rich enough to afford them.
A know that was awesome lol what about when he sees the older lady, have me chills lol
Fun fact. The luxury apartments of the 80s were lucky to have 50% occupancy and some far lower by the late 80s. So, Patrick could indeed have chain sawed a girl in the hall and no one would notice because no one would be living there. And security cameras were of poor picture quality, too. So, a guy who looks like any other guy could shoot a guard and get away with it.
This is a very unique and cool film
Can’t believe it’s 21 years old this year
OK now I feel old haha
American Psycho, The Machinist, Harsh Times, Batman Trilogy, The Fighter, Terminator Salvation, The Big Short, Ford vs Ferrari. Can we just appreciate the underrated range and caliber of Christian Bale, criminally underrated actor.
You missed reign of fire, lol.
Empire of the sun
Oh, he gets plenty of acclaim. Michael Biehn is criminally underrated.
Family Guy Season 7 Episode "Oceans Three and a Half"
Still not on the same level as Bill Paxton, who was killed by the Predator, Terminator, and a Xenomorph in his career.
A movie with batman, the joker, and green goblin. True art
The real badass is the realtor! Staring a Sociopath down and asking him to leave so she can sell a house 🏡
She is probably a Sociopath herself, that is why she can do that!
The novel version of Patrick Bateman makes the movie version look like Mr. Rogers.
He was extremely demonic in the novel.
It's true, in the novel he commits like 50 murders, whereas in the film it's only around 15
Mind giving me a short rundown of what he did?
@@kingmuizz708 read the book
@@brightestlight9462 I will but I kinda like spoilers...
@@kingmuizz708 There's a part where he takes a lighter to an eyeball that's been living in my head rent-free since I read it.

"I need to return some videotapes"
Is that a new FilmComicsExplained video?
YES IT IS!
I love how the one guy in the keeps ad is sad that he's bald and not because he's in FUCKING PRISON
00:27, that was Insane!
This is still one of my favorite movies. Even today I can't tell if he actually killed those people or if they were just a psychosis.
I don't think he did. That would compromise his position and reputation beyond what is acceptable.
Some were delusional kills, others were committed. The best evidence of this was when he left the message on his lawyers answering machine. His inability to separate his own delusions from reality, is a good reflection of this. His body total varies, is because in his mind he killed far more people. So a true number will never be known, but its pretty safe to say his mask slipped several times and he lost self control enough to kill.
@@brocklanders3616 I've always wondered about the ATM and the cat. I know he was having delusions when the ATM was talking to him, but did he really feed the cat into the ATM? It's quite possible the realtor cleaned up the bodies, in order to sell the apartment. I always do like movies that are about murder mysteries, psychological mind screwing.
I believe he attempted to, but it was another example of his mask of sanity slipping. His reaction at the dry cleaners, when the woman couldn't get the obvious blood stain out. He also showed restraint at times, not killing Lewis in the bathroom or when he had the nail gun to his secretary Genes head. I think we have enough evidence to conclude, Patrick probably killed the chick the chick he brought home from the club that said he was sweet or the chick he walked across the street with late at night or the homeless man. Paul Allen is a mystery, but I think he did out of jealousy and a inferiority complex. Christine with the chainsaw, hard to believe that happened. Probably not the cops or those in the hotel either. As I stated, some were delusional kills and others were commited. I think he probably did kill the hookers, and the mess was cleaned up at some point. Just not with a chainsaw, probably with his instruments in his top drawer. I watched the movie countless times, and the acting is superb. Christian Bale was Patrick Bateman in the movie. I couldn't imagine anyone else playing that character as well.
Many thanks again. You've been dropping some classics lately, and some of my favourite films. To think the studio wanted Leonardo DiCaprio for the role.
Leo is a great actor and he plays a similar character in Shutter Island. The issue with him playing Bateman for me is that it would have potentially derailed the career of Christian Bale, who has proved himself to be one of the finest actors of our time.
@@filmcomicsexplained plus leo at that time had secured an image of a charming hero from titanic. So his advisors didn't wanted him to do this role, because it may degrade that positive image due to this dark charac of bateman.
Can't imagine anyone else but Christian Bale playing this role.
It’s the book for me. I wish they included the scene with him crying and wandering the beach eating raw jellyfish and gobbling down piles of sand.
ME TOO THAT HAD ME DYING
Bateman’s smile always brings a chill up my spine...
It's really amazing how calming your voice is while also kinda making me uneasy, usually just cus of the content you're covering while keeping a very calm analytical tone. Love your channel man. Can't wait for your next video. It's always so fascinating.
So Batman kills The Joker after all? 😳😳😳
Yes it is!
When he casually started putting on the plastic and danced to the axe,I lost my shit like that escalated quickly.
Hard to believe this was the same guy. Who played Dick Cheney in Vice. And could you cover Kung Fu Panda?
It's on the list, mate. Thanks :)
I m m op0i000u0upuii808k80k80k8
The part where Bateman loses it when one of the other rich guys calls Leatherface Featherhead is funny.
Now I kinda want to see a movie that revolves around a man who’s mind is broken but it is unclear wether or not if it truly is fixed or still shattered. Like he always seems perfectly calm but he sometimes does things that make him look like a psychopath.
Read the book
I watch so many of these over and over again. It’s become almost therapeutic in a way 😅. Always love the content man! Thanks for all your hard work!
Hey man your work is really solid I listen to your videos when I'm cooking and it enhanced the experience a lot. Just wanted to let you know that your videos are awesome
Just watched this a few days ago, the lewis scene In the bathroom was hilarious and caught me off guard
00:03, this was on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments. And you'll soon find out why.
I like that the dark side in Patrick Bateman, isn't personified by some amalgamation of all his sick and disturbing fantasies, that tells him to do bad things. But is instead presented to the audience through his inner monolog and skewed perception of reality. Too many books and movies rely on some dark entity in the persons head telling them what to do leaving the audience or reader, completley in the know, and therefore leaving nothing up to interpretation or uncertainty. I am glad that this moive does not do that. And as Alwayes great work man:)
Would love if you did “The Mothman Prophecies” 🙏🏻
Sounds good! Adding it to the list now :)
@@filmcomicsexplained Ty for all content, would also suggest enders game. much to delve into with that one.
Nice breakdown. I happened to catch this movie on cable back in the mid 2000s & fell in love with it. I tried to tell anyone I could how great this flick was.
Thanks for sharing!
It's awesome
yes those evil ATMs always telling me to feed them a cat.
The best villains never get enough praise.
Iv seen a few explained videos about this but exploring the identity and names really rounds this off
christian bale and jared leto...how is this not an alternate batman movie?
They are all wearing the same pair of glasses too
Absolutely love the videos thank you so much
Interesting fact: David Cronenberg was going to direct this film, but lost the rights to the novel.
Shaine is always quick with the trivia! Love it mate, thank you :)
Sad, because the film's pretty tame compared to the book.
@@Josep_Hernandez_Lujan yes the book is on another level of graphic.
Damn I would have loved to see that .
Love your breakdowns. Short but sweet!
This is the best video on American Psycho
Thank you 🙏
Obscure but, the Keeps advert made me laugh. A guy terminally ill, a guy on death row, worried about hair loss
"Patrick it's you! You're the American psycho!"
Easily the best line of the film
"Massaging their vanity" is probably one of the best things I've ever heard. Your channel is the shit!!
Thanks Freddy!
Jared Leto
played the Joker twice
worked with 3 batmen
Bale(American Psycho)
Affleck(Suicide Squad and Zack snyder Justice League)
Keaton(Morbius)
It's hilarious how Bale played a guy named Bateman and then played The Batman
I'd stay for another video, but I have to go and return some video tapes.
Id love to watch this right now, but I have to return some video tapes
I loved the satire of '80s culture and excess the movie represents. As far as theories, I think Patrick's murders were in his head. Just... This movie is FINALLY getting the respect it deserves.
What a effed up and creepy movie. Good job, sir. Good job.
Was just thinking couple days ago, that you should do a video for this movie. Glad you did!
Another great video! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Bateman: "I only have two emotions.. greed... and disgust"
Very well done my good sir keep up the great work!!!
Thanks for the visit
Great movie, I always took the realtor as someone covering up the bodies to protect Paul Allen.
Such a great movie
Not really, if not for Bale it would probablu suck

Oh hi Patrick, what's new with you?
@@filmcomicsexplained Just listening to Huey Lewis and the News
It's interesting to note that in the book, he is indeed a killer. Obviously the film leaves it up to interpretation.
I feel attacked by the paid promotion since i am going bald -_-
OMG, the shots of bald men in prison rubbing bald heads in despair was a GREAT ad for hair loss products.
I love your reviews there awesome, can you please do some stephen king reviews like the stand, misery, under the dome or even cell
Sure! We've got some Stephen King adaptations planned soon :)
@@filmcomicsexplained ah amazing I'm reading through the boom revival at the moment it's one if the scariest sob stories throughout his entire series.
Easily one of my favorite movies. It’s one of the few that I’ve seen that actually had me questioning what I had seen was real or not, it does such a good job at that. My personal opinion is that a few of the murders he committed in the film were real (I.E the homeless man and the prostitutes) but the other murders in the film didn’t actually happen and they only take place in his mind. Christian Bale does such a fantastic job in the role, it’s like he was meant to play Patrick Bateman.
OH! American psycho! I've actually never fully watched this movie! Gotta watch it after this video!
You didn’t show the best seen with him walking down with his cassette player headphones and people dub music over it
Nice analysis. One question. Did he commit the murders that we seen in the film?
When i have my next Business cards will have a watermark saying: "It even has a watermark"
It should be viewed as a comedy. Laugh while watching it, instead of being overly serious.
7:00, everyone began to wonder what just happened, and whether he was just hallucinating the entire time
FCE!!!! Always happy when you drop a new vid
3:42 - I'd still say that Bale's breakout role was in _Empire of the Sun._ (I still can't believe that Ben Stiller is that much older than Bale.)
Impressive video. Now let's see Paul Allen's sponsor.
Never thought of it as more than a wild movie. Now there’s a new level. Sweet.

This movie can NEVER be completely adapted from the novel version
No 90-minute movie can. American Psycho has 60 chapters. I think to get close to a complete adaptation of any novel, you need at least a season or two of television :)
@@filmcomicsexplained actually I was talking about the level of graphic violence of the novel itself and how that aspect can never be 100% adapted. My fault for not being clear. This can totally work as a series adaptation.
@@TheGodOfWarhammer did the book explain if it was real or not?
@@MikeBNumba6 the ending of the book is ambiguous but there’s a sequel story that confirms that he was a killer and that he married his secretary.
@@MikeBNumba6 you get the feeling he did kill some of the people he thought he did but not all. In the Laws of Attraction his brother Sean Bateman is one of the main characters. Patrick appears for a scene with blood stains on his shirt.
