- 2020 BMW X7 vs Mercedes-Benz GLS Review by The Straight Pipes. The BMW X7 M50i has 523hp and 553lb ft tq, while the Mercedes GLS450 has 362hp 369lb ft tq. While these trims are not exactly matched, you can get the Mercedes GLS580 with 483hp and 516lb ft tq, or the BMW X7 40i with 335hp and 332lb ft tq. Now that all of that is clear, the Mercedes-Benz GLS450 is optioned out to $105,990 CAD and the BMW X7 M50i is sitting at $134,200 CAD. In this battle of luxury SUV's, would you pick the BMW X7 or the Mercedes GLS?

Everyone waiting for the escalade, I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you. I understand the body on frame point you bring up but thats 1 category you are considering. I hope you guys have seen TheStraightPipes review on the escalade. The rant that jakob went on about rattles, squeaks, build quality and other things like the infotainment system. Escalade is definitely a head turner but if I am spending 100k on a car. It better have all the "quirks and features" that these 2 cars have and it better not be a rebadged tahoe.

@Freddy Brainy I do wash my cars, but I also realize it's a fruitless endeavor when there's snow on the road. Just wash the salt off the bottom and call it good until the weather improves.
finally reviewers who dont throw big SUVs made for comfort into corners and talking too much about 0-100 times. None of that matters. all we want from these cars is comfort and how they feel after driving 2000 km on roadtrips etc. Thank you!
I watched this video many times before finally pulling the trigger on an X7 M50i back in November. Thank you for your review! The car has been perfect.
I prefer the body style of the GLS, but that BMW just rocks in maroon.

I follow you guys religiously ever since you first started your UA-cam channel! You guys are all! I don't know why all these luxury car companies don't include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. I have an Honda Accord sport 2.0 t with both. And it really is a gentleman's type R, but you're right about infotainment car systems in general most of them suck unfortunately!

Merc interior definitely looks cooler with the wide double touchscreen and the 4 air vents, but the X7’s usability is far better as it has more useful buttons and overall an easier use from what I can tell.

Just the engine is different; they are outfitted quite the same (look at the sound system of the GLS and other stuff) and the engine thingy is already explained in the beginning. And the GLS 63 AMG has no direct counterpart the otherway around (no X7M) - BUT you might take a look at the Alpina XB7 :)

I sincerely appreciate this comparison. Well done and thorough. I’m in the market for a used one of either. Love my old X5 with the turbo. May have to go with the X7 if I can find an affordable used one that took the depreciation hit for me. Thanks y’all.
P.s. please get the word out to manufacturers to stop making 80% of interior packages black in the newer models. I hate it. It makes the car dark and shows every piece of fuzz, lint, dog hair, etc.

BMW x7 look great and I love the way it made interior.
Its the same interior as in a 1 series what you love about it. BMW as a top engine and trim drives better, in every oyher aspect the Benz is better.

X7 all time everytime. I like the look of the x7 inside and out. and all the controls just work, GLS interior looks beautiful and colorful, but, it looks also complicated. or maybe i just used to my bimmer.

This channel is underrated
GLS for me. I like the fact it's not too blingy or shouty. The grill is more proportionate for it's size compared to the BMW and the MB UX system is brilliant for both response, ease of use and design. The fact the GLS 450 can be spec'd with regular artico leather which is more durable is a plus.

Well, this is timely. I actually just ordered an X7 M50i last week. It's gratifying to see (admittedly subjective) confirmation that I picked the right one, though I do like the GLS too.

Thanks guys for a great review. Three points which are important that I think should have been discussed. Quality of interior. The Mercedes has a much cheaper plastic grade on its interior compared to the BMW. Other reviews have mentioned this and just seeing the gls on display at the LA motor show you could see how much it had already shown up scratches and marks. Secondly, the air vents on the Mercedes front dash are fake (only for aesthetics) and a recent review on the net said the Mercedes cooling was poor in the hot environment being tested. Thirdly, I personally found the side bolsters very intrusive on the GLS. I am 180cm and 90kgs. Interested to see what others thought

Surprised you guys didn’t mention the materials. I’ve found a lot of hard touch plastics in the Benz, where the BMW doesn’t use anything hard touch plastics.

Just priced out a GLS580 and with the similar trims and much better looking wheels, it came very close to the X7's as-tested price. Between that, I'd get the X7, but I'd get a Range Rover with that kind of money.
Im still drooling over the SVR. Saw one on the road and it sounded so good.
I like the X7. However my heart belongs to Lexus so I'd get the Lexus LX with the sport design package.

liked the older gls better, it used to have aggressive lines and looked a lot more intimidating on the road, at this point i cant see the difference between the new gls, gle, or glc, they all have the same rounded body and design. Im disappointed with Mercedes, as much as it hurts me to say it all their cars lost their iconic designs and they all look the same. Im especially disappointed with the re design of the CLS, the rear is plain and looks like the back of a C, it lost the iconic alligator lights and its sleek design. The only company that i see improving their design is BMW, all their new re designs are much more aggressive and they're giving customers more for their money. I still like mercedes more than bmw but i can see that changing in the near future.

We saw the GLS come out and were disappointed that it didn’t have the same grille that the GLE does. The exterior is very conservative but I personally like the interior more than that of the x7. The x7 however has a better 3rd row and with us having 3 children family, the third row is important to us. We are opting for the x7 and will likely ordering the M50i in black sapphire with tartufo extended merino leather - does anyone know how I can order wheels in black? It doesn’t show that option on the bmw website
