If you have the space and the money, you should look into getting a vapor blasting cabinet. This process produces parts that are arguably as nice as new.

Great video Mike really provided some good information first time I’ve ever seen the inside of an alternator and how and why it works.

      Hello Marion
Im glad you are able to finally see an opened up alternator. It's really not to bad a project.
Not many people try it..the popular choice is to trade it in on a reman..
      Cheers!

I swapped my alternator on my 993C4S but kept the original which was working fine until my belt broke so probably the diodes went bad I'll try to rebuild it myself&keep it handy

This was really straight forward. Almost too easy... Funny that a diode was failing, they are usually bulletproof.

Hello Remko Thanks yeas not to bad to rebuild..
Diodes don't really like heat..not sure what makes them malfunction.
Heat or overload at some point

Hi Mike, hope all is well with you. Super job on the alternator, just a pity to get dust on it once it's fitted to the engine! I'm a big fan of the Dremel, or any other multi-tool. Where would we be without them these days. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and keep up the good work. :)

Your description of the function of a diode was spot on. I've heard them referred to as rectifiers but I think you used the term diode exclusively. Is there a difference between a diode and a rectifier in an automotive alternator? Thanks for another great video, Mike.

    • @MikesRestorations
      @MikesRestorations  2 роки тому +1

      Hello Dan
The diodes act together as a unit that is called the rectifier. There is usually 6 large diodes in most alternators. 3 positive and 3 negative.
The stator is wound with 3 windings. with 3 leads that wire into the diode pack. 3 phase.
The rectifier assembly or rectifier /diode pac converts the alternating current generated buy the stator and is sent through the diode pack or rectifier where the current is the converted to DC and off to the main terminal that hooks back up to the battery.
Alternating current is squeezed thru the diodes and cant come back so it then becomes DC.
One way to think of it is the alternating current is rectified into DC current. Hence rectifier.
