Ball bearings, do not reuse them, they must be replaced !!!

    • @forevercomputing

You can, but the risk of damage is high. Opening them up means you damage the shield and this allows dirt to get in.
      I would replace them.

I usually enjoy watching Mr. E restore things but this one has me a bit confused. What is the ragged groove on the end of the shaft. Is that where the brushes made contact, before the remains of the brushes wore a groove. It went from a dirty door stop to a freshly washed and painted door stop. Yeah I know, stop being critical of a hard working guy, with limited tools and equipment. I have seen some pretty good work from Mr. E especially with his rewiring jobs, but this one just doesn't make the grade. Sorry Mr E, but I will still support your channel, because you have done good work in the past. Stay safe and keep on restoring .....Ken from California USA.

Slip ring for two brushes, energises the armature, regular alternators have brushes, brush less exist but not mainstream, it's not a groove, it's the separation of the two rings

I didn't see you apply any heat transfer grease to the diode pack or the controller. Usually you do that to help keep those high current diodes cooler.

I don't call that a very old alternator. I'm over 70, that alternator is probably from the 90's. I'm not sure, but I don't think you should paint the moving parts with ordinary paint. Anyone know about that for sure? I can imagine you don't really want paint where the rectifier and such make contact on the outside either. Oh, that's how I know this alternator isn't really all that old, the parts on the outside with their plastic modules... didn't have that back in the day, rubber or plastic washers where isolation was required was about it. Also, the pulley is for a grooved serpentine belt, back in the day they were made for V belts, and you'd have more than one belt to drive things sometimes as many as 3 or even 4, but usually 2.

Cars in the mid 80's started using serpentine belts, so while this is young compared to say a 1940's car part, it could still be 30+ years old. Painting the inside with metallic paint might seem problematic, but they are usually blasted with metallic debris, carbon brush powder, moisture and corrosives over their life span. Probably not going to hurt anything :)

I'm over 60 and anything to be old to me has to be pre-Viet Nam era. As a high schooler in the 70's I worked with dad on his cars from the 50's and 60's.

В современном хламе, который производит российский автопром, есть генераторы, где выпрямительный блок снять можно только выпаяв выводы обмоток. Сложно, но можно.

I would replace the diodes, bearings and freewheel. Did you make sure the regulator is working?

You should change the bearings and chopper head on the rotor cause chopper is gone because of friction most probably it wont charge the battery

First, this alternator is not very old... Probably produced in 2005 - 2010. So I would rather call this a repair rather than restoration. Second, cleaning and spraying is neither restoration, nor repair. Third, spraying the winding with colour? Like seriously? And those bearings? Instead of replacing them you put some grease in without even cleaning the old grease and dust. OMG :D
