The original version of this song was very like the slow, acoustic ballad version Clapton did in Unplugged. It was not well received by the band, nor producer Tom Dowd, and when Duane Allman was invited to join them to finish the album (Clapton was struggling with heroin, and Duane's playing inspired him), Duane suggested making it into a rocker, and used a riff from John Lee Hooker. The ending piano and dueling slide guitars was a happy accident, in that drummer Jim Gordon was trying to record some solo tracks in his down time, and the band heard this, and appropriated it from him, and they added the slide guitars on top of the pretty piano melody. Clapton asked Duane to quit the Allman Brothers Band to join Derek & the Dominoes. He declined, but did miss several ABB shows while he stayed behind to record the album. He joined the Dominoes for 2 shows, one of which exists in a very rough tape, but is the only live version of Layla with Eric and Duane both. That one is a straight rocker, and does not feature the piano outro.
Absolutely great song. I was 17 when this was released in 1970. I really did not like the slower version of this song Eric recorded later in his life, but the original was fire🔥.
