  • At a House hearing on October 23, Congresswoman Katie Porter questioned Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg about user privacy, the people they pay to monitor content on their site, and the company's lobbying efforts.
Spoiler alert: he offered up excuses and a lot of answers.

vLad Why is this seen as a good point of her. He is the CEO of one of the largest tech companies in the world. He hires lawyers exactly for the reason that he is unskilled in that department. It is absolutely ridiculous to think that he’d know about every legal argument and detail in the entire case. He is not a lawyer, they only give him a summary of what is going on in the case. Legal arguments are complex creations that take a lot of strategy, time and knowlegde to make. He cannot just answer these questions. If she wanted to know why something seems contradicting, she needs to ask his lawyers.

@@FoshCake The topic is about data privacy. Making sure that the people who police the information circulating on facebook are credible isn't rocket science. Mark has lawyers working for him and for sure they talked to him about it as well. Katie also calls the office of the person being investigated a week before the hearing to advise them of what legislation she will talk to them about because if you haven't noticed, a lot of people plead ignorance of the law during hearings and it wastes her time. She even had the info up on screen for Mark so he can come up with an answer.

@@FoshCake The legal argument the congresswoman was referring to is quite simple, and it was the heart of the legal argument that FB was making. Basically, FB users signed a document saying they can't sue in court because there was no injury. It's NOT complex or difficult to get. If Mark even spoke to a lawyer for 5 minutes, which of course he speaks with his legal team all the time for hours on end, he definitely would've understood what FB was doing in federal court. He was just playing dumb and it's obvious.

There is no point in arguing with people who feel entitled to their righteousness.
You just have to do what the congresswoman is saying - reclaim your time. And go about your own business.
It is the entire point of such videos. So that people feel good about themselves. More moral and have better hearts.

The thing that's special about her, is that she's one of very few American politicians on this level who actually works FOR HER EMPLOYERS - the people. She's not working for her own benefit, hoping to get a cushy lobbying job after a stint in congress giving some company everything they want. She does what the is SUPPOSED to do - she works in the best interest of American voters. She stands out, because most of her peers (even in her own party) does not appear to be doing the same thing in my eyes.

In an interview she reveals the reason why she's so effective with questions is that she doesn't ask a question she doesn't know the answer to. So, it's up to the person being questioned to respond truthfully, or waste her time with lies. If you're straightforward and honest with Congresswoman Porter, it'll go easier for you. If not, you might be in a viral video shortly after.

Keenan Thomas in the description it has the date of the hearing, you can use that to look up the hearing on C-SPAN. There it will have the title of the actual hearing, and usually at the beginning of hearings the chairman of the committee will outline the purpose of the hearing and what the committee overall is trying to establish. Certain committees are also responsible for scrutinizing the departments whose name they bear, in other words they hold the cabinet secretaries accountable and give the American people an opportunity to see how the administration (Of the day) is doing in various departments. And committees do sometimes have power, when they’re analyzing certain bills sometimes they can die in the committee process. Say you have a bill that is not cost effective, sometimes the bill can be killed in the house ways and means committee to give an example. Also when you testify before congressional committees, you take an oath that carries the same weight as testifying in a court of law. In other words you can be charged with perjury if you lied to Congress in your congressional testimony. You can also be subpoenaed if they need to talk to you and you’re deliberately avoiding them. To give an example say you’re at the CEO of a cellular company and you sold the meta-data of customers to foreign governments, and just like in court you You can be held in contempt. I feel I should mention you can assert your fifth amendment liberties Regarding the right to remain silent. As for representative Porter herself, and the purpose of her line of questioning you can read in the video description.

He's almost single-handedly responsible for the Doomsday Clock being pushed closer to midnight than ever before, including during the Cold War. Not only is he not doing anything about the looming reality of catastrophic climate change, he pulled the US out of the Paris Accord and publicly mocks a literal child for trying to do something about it. He's the most incompetent excuse we've ever had for a president (and that's saying a lot, there have been so many awful ones) and his approval rating has been below 50% for his entire presidency (you can fact-check that yourself). I'll laugh when his Me Too moment arrives and he finally goes to prison for being a rapist.

All those tens of thousands of fake accounts opened, those tens of millions of dollars just floating out there. Her reclaiming time is because politicians tend to talk bs for as long as they can until time runs out. This is to avoid incriminating themselves while simultaneously trying to paint themselves in a better light. If you actually listened to the conversation being had, every question she asked was answered by Zuck with redundant and off-topic factoids disguised as if it were related to her inquiry (it wasn’t). She caught this right away and stopped the bs in its tracks. She’s sharp and hyper-focused on what’s important. I’m beyond impressed with her interrogation skills

He has a right to explain himself, and maybe he’ll say something actually valid. Saying that you assume he’ll come up with a bullshit answer and then shut him down... Also, taking into account the complexity and vastness of the investigation it is impossible to answer with a “simple” yes or no. The interview was poorly conducted, with no answers or explainations to her questions, because she shut him down. I will give you that she did have a point at the end with the 1 billion dollars. But making assumptions, that framing yes or no questions based on those assumptions and actually expect an easy answer is just not done.

No boundaries were initially set for privacy concerns and it’s become increasingly evident that it has become a place where anyone with an axe to grind can grind it, without too many repercussions. This is a bigger issue than having Zuckerberg testify for a day or two in court. It deserves a commission being set up to monitor a full investigation and some concrete laws being enacted. Some of it is feigned. Their lawyers prepped them by telling to answer basically "I don't know." to everything for plausible deniability. Sometimes they really are just that ill-informed, but we'll never really know, because the CEO's are always just performing. It's an act. Zuckerberg just happens to be really bad at it.

Chuck Taylor it may sound that way to you, but I have heard her say many times, I don't ask a question I don't know the answer to. She comes prepared to the back teeth. She likes to make sure none of her precious 5 minutes of question time is wasted.

As far as I am able to ascertain, you are the only one with an axe to grind. You are either a troll or have been paid by someone to insidiously cast aspersions on how Ms Porter does her job. This woman will rake anyone over the coals without batting an eye with absolutely no reservations. I love hearing her say “reclaiming my time” over and over. She may not have the same amount of finances in her accounts then the CEOs and chairmen that she grills but she had an intelligence that those in her crosshairs will never have. I’d say I feel bad for anyone in her crosshairs, but they probably did something wrong to end up in the ‘Porter hot seat’. (Enter trademark!)
