CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Sonny (Al Pacino) tells Sal (John Cazale) of his plan to leave the country on a jet.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on a true 1972 story, Sidney Lumet's 1975 drama chronicles a unique bank robbery on a hot summer afternoon in New York City. Shortly before closing time, scheming loser Sonny (Al Pacino) and his slow-witted buddy, Sal (John Cazale), burst into a Brooklyn bank for what should be a run-of-the-mill robbery, but everything goes wrong, beginning with the fact that there is almost no money in the bank. The situation swiftly escalates, as Sonny and Sal take hostages; enough cops to police the tristate area surround the bank; a large Sonny-sympathetic crowd gathers to watch; the media arrive to complete the circus; and police captain Moretti (Charles Durning) tries to negotiate with Sonny while keeping the volatile spectacle under control. When Sonny's lover, Leon (Chris Sarandon), tries to talk Sonny out of the bank, we learn the robbery's motive: to finance Leon's sex-change operation. Sonny demands a plane to escape, but the end is near once menacingly cool FBI agent Sheldon (James Broderick) arrives to take over the negotiations.

This movie was ahead of it's time. Pacino at his very best.
Brooke Hanley actually the timing is on point knowing the true story took place couple years back.
@@uccisorerhymes1249 Very true.
I think pacino is at his best in heat and godfather part 2, but this is his 3rd best performance in my opinion
What about John Cazale
@@Bazzle-pl8fu And what about "Serpico (1973)??
Cazale only made 5 movies. All were nominated for Oscar's. All who knew him, and those who are younger and smart enough to study him, consider him one of the best actors ever. His "Wyoming " line was improvised. Everyone tried not to laugh and the take was saved. But Cazale said it with such a deep forlorness that you almost forget it's hilarity. That informed so much of his work. Like the British actor Mark Rylance, so much of what Cazale did had an undercurrent of deep sadness.
Could you image all the movies Cazale would have made or could have been a part of . He was such a great actor
Yes
The underling statement of Wyoming, is the frightening thought, that Sal, wanted to go back in time
Knowing what the outcome would be
The fear of knowing what was outside, without going outside .
All of that captured in one word, that doesn't make sense
His poker face reminds me of buster keaton's
Interesting side note. His archival footage is in Godfather 3, which was also nominated for best picture.
Most of them with Al-Pacino.
RIP John Cazale (August 12, 1935 - March 13, 1978), aged 42
You will be remembered as a legend.
The part before the Wyoming line was so sad, when Sonny explained that if they left the country, there would be no coming back, so Sal needed to say his goodbyes to whoever he needed to, and Sal couldn't think of a soul... Sonny was all he had.
That's so rough and sad.
John Canazale's understated acting was the perfect foil for Al Pacino's over the top antics. They were perfect together.
Nothing was the same in the Corleone family after Vito's death.
Michael finally actually loses it and him and Fredo rob a bank
Good thing Sonny was not around to beat up all the hostages
Was Wyoming improvised by Sal on the spot. Genius if he did. I always remember that from this movie.
It was improvised, yeah! :)
It was, and the director fell apart laughing so badly that he assumed he'd ruined the shot.
Al improvised his part of the scene too. the whole scene was an improv.
On dvd commentary Sidney Lumet says he had to bite his hand to suppress laughing. They were both encouraged to ad lib. Attica was included after suggestion from one of the crew, hence the crowd's reaction. Plus there is no music in the movie except for Elton John song, it was added in as it was the radio when filming. One of THE films of the 70s; always thought 70s was one of the best ever decades for movies
@@johncater4854 I think You're right.
Poor Fredo. Just never could seem to get things right in any movie.
+43nostromo But he was so effective. Poor man died young not all that long after this of cancer. Brilliant actors Al and John Cazale.
Brooke Hanley He always played passive characters, but the irony is that his fellow actors were in awe of his talents. He was just that good. Sad loss. He was taken from us too soon.
Too bad his love of cigars was too great.
HIs last movie was 'The Deer Hunter' with the female leading role played by Meryl Streep, to whom he was engaged at the time.
"John cazale was one of the greatest actors of his generation. Al pacino said he is the best actor he ever worked with, even Meryl Streep said something similar about him." i read in one of yt comments
Al Pacino was on the brink of laughing when he said " No Wyoming ... " lol
Ad-libbed his famous "Wyoming?" line Director Sidney Lumet laughed so hard that he feared he had ruined the take. It wasn't ruined, however, and was used in the final cut.
Yeah, great story, isn't it.
How did that John Cazale keep a straight face? What a cool dude he must have been.
Margaret Meryl Streep thought so.
Anyone know what the original line was or did they tell John to just improvise?
You can kinda tell Pacino had to take a moment to not burst out laughing from the way his lips sort a tremble
Yes, he stepped away to "Take car of it" lol
Really? I don't see any sign of him breaking. To me, he reacts exactly in the moment as Sonny would.
gabriel martinez alfonso stfu dumbass
I like how u can see Al Pacino's jaw muscles slightly tense from laughter as he hears Wyoming
This could be like an alternative Corleone universe. Michael didnt kill Fredo and lost all the family fortune. kates left michael. Fredo still dopey as usual. They go rob a bank
Yep, and Michael was actually bipolar as well, during The Godfathers he was on meds that kept him stable. Once he goes off them, he gets all hyper and whiny, as you see here.
Man, you killed me with that comment! :)
LOFL!
And Michael and Fredo live happily ever after in that strange foreign country Wyoming...I like it...
And Aplona never died. And got fat as a pig.
Later in the movie: "Sal wanted to go to Wyoming. I had to tell him it's not a country. He doesn't know where Wyoming is. I'm with a guy who doesn't know where Wyoming is. Think you got problems?" ROTFLMAO
🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂
I've driven through Wyoming many times. Its a beautiful country
After Sal said Wyoming I think Pacino was in rush to get out of the shot before he burst out laughing .
Extremely fond memory of this scene. I was a senior in high school. My parents and I went to see this movie. My Dad laughed the loudest he ever did with Sonny;s perfect word -- WYOMING ! God bless you John Cazale for the most perfectly innocent funny line in the history of Hollywood. I hope someday to visit the foreign country of Wyoming. I hope my passport is up to date !!
John Casale improvised on spot. Pacino actually if you look, looks away to prevent from laughing. They were good friends from actors studio.
pacino's crazy eyes lmao
One of the best performances ever.
I've always wanted to travel abroad, Italy, Greece, France, and of course Wyoming...
I'm flyin to the tropics. fuck the snow! lol
Sunny climes!
When Sall said Wyoming I almost fell, but Pacino to his credit didn’t even blink and very calmly kept going.. now tells you he is a natural
All five films John Cazale appeared in were nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. The thing is, many of the actors from those films claim they learned more about acting from Cazale than anyone else.
You're very factually correct and it is awesome you know and recognize this, think about that? No way he was just lucky, this guy was a brilliant actor, who carefully read any script handed to him and only agreed to act in amazing films. Wonder how long he could have kept that amazing run going if his life wasn't cut tragically short?
I honestly think his best role was his last - in the Deer Hunter. Amazing that he was terminally ill and able to pull off such a great performance.
That movie was shot in Clairton Pennsylvania, I'm from Pittsburgh, not far from me at all...
Very true. Very few people know about John Cazale. One of the few and best. Al Pacino has learned a lot from this guy
He was the best. Had he not passed away so soon, he would have become one of the greatest actors of all time, something like a Daniel Day Lewis on steroids.
I think I've always read the "Wyoming" line differently; it never struck me as funny. To me, Sal was so innocent in his own way and so sheltered, he would have done anything Sonny asked because it never occurred to him that his friend wouldn't know what he was doing. He had no one to say goodbye to, he had no one else he loved. He never should have been a part of anything like a robbery but he would never have said no to Sonny. The way he said, "Wyoming" broke my heart because it was so pure. John Cazale was such an incredible talent.
“I’m flyin’ to the tropics! Fock the snow!”
00:57...the teller wants out of her life as much as the bank robbers do. Brilliant.
She's great, so believable and genuine. Like you've actually met someone like her (probably someone's mother). One of the most memorable characters in this movie.
@@Unownshipper one of the reasons the movie is an absolute masterpiece is that Sidney lumet always casted the small actors as “Real People” and not characters and told the actors to add as much of themselves as possible to who they play and that way they come across as real human beings with multiple dimensions to them that the audience can relate to plus he told them to wear their own clothes and they would get 2 dollars extra for that 😉 plus the bank teller played by Penelope Allen actually knew Pacino more than anyone because she and her husband had taken him in when he was young and struggling
Pacino's best acting performance in his career is this character, Sonny, in Dog Day afternoon.
Best line in the movie, Cazale's, "Wyoming."
Great improvisation by Sal....... and great follow up from the unexpecting Al :)
+SweetThing734 Two Greats!
Best actor.
It’s no way this robbery was taken seriously 😂😂😂Sonny Wortzik was insane I laugh every rewatch harder & harder! Al Pacino is perfect in this role I swear nobody else could play Sonny Wortzik!
Sal:"Wyoming.."
Sonny: "Wyoming..?..Thats not a country"! LOL!
1:00 back when I was 21, I used to quote this line all the time. I really believed it, too.
This Performance by Pacino is Top 4 in the 100 greatest performances of all time
I live in Wyoming and it is unique. I have visited 45 states in the union and Sal is right, Wyoming is it's own country!
The city of San Diego has more people than the entire state of Wyoming.
Haha, nice. You know, John Cazale improvised that line. It wasn't in the script...So perfect.
Pacino: "Any special country you want to go to?"
Calaze: "Wyoming"
Best delivery of a single word ever, from anybody in any context.
Welcome to algeria Mr al pacino❤️
in the minute 2:09 Pacino tries to hold the laughter.
John cazale acting is out of this world.
Woooohaaaa #Algeria loooooves you al pacino 💞💞💞💞💞💞
Pacino had a totally different voice and even accent back then. I know he’s acting here but even in interviews from the 70s.
His New York accent is real thick in this movie. Pacino being a native New Yorker always had an accent but never knew it was like this at one time. Unless he is acting the larr that way.
*part
It's definitely a Brooklyn accent, which the character Sal is from. I think it's the thickest of all the New York accents. In Serpico, his accent was lot lighter either from the Bronx or Manhattan.
John Cazale, the actor with the best curriculum in Hollywood:
The Godfather
The Godfather 2
The Conversation
Dog Day Afternoon
The Deer Hunter
An absolute master.
This is what someone looks like when they know they're about to go to prison for a very long time, but want to push one more "great idea" as a Hail Mary before they inevitably go down LoL
John Cazale, who played Sal in this movie and, of course, Fredo Corleone, was in only five films. All of them were nominated for or won the Oscar for best picture.
Pacino used to look like a mashup of the four Beatles
Every major motion picture that John Cazale was in was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. That's pretty amazing to me.
The Godfather
The Conversation
The Godfather Part II
Dog Day Afternoon
The Deer Hunter
The Godfather Part III
He was only in 5 films. He died in 1978, 12 years before The Godfather 3 was released.
1971 Panic In Needle Park
1972 The Godfather
1973 Serpico
1974 The Godfather Part 2
1975 Dog Day Afternoon
Nothing but net for 5 years.
In this scene Cazale takes Al Pacino the great acting test of his life.
I seem to be in the minority here, but I think Cazale and Pacino are both absolutely brilliant because they make this scene HEARTBREAKING. I don’t find it funny at all. Firstly, we find out that Sal has nobody in his life that’s he feels close enough to to say goodbye. And then the Wyoming exchange, showing Sal’s deep ignorance and simplicity. I find it all terribly sad, and I think Cazale had an unparalleled ability to make you pity a character.
And Pacino's reaction is probably so perfect because he was able to channel the disbelief and absurdity of what he'd just heard, the actor saved the scene and it looked exactly like the character suppressed the excessive reaction because of the seriousness of the situation.
john cazale had a sadness in the eyes in every shot of every movie he was in
Sonny-he barks. Sal-he bites. God what a scene.
Sal's expression at 1:11 is like 'Wtf is this guy on'
You Broking my heart fredo
"Is there any special country that you want to go to?"
"Wyoming" *serious straight face*
"Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu....."
The tragedy in this scene is not that Cazale's character thinks that Wyoming is a country...but that the employee is totally thrilled with the idea of escaping her life, even as a hostage, with an impromptu move to Algeria!
Personally, I never interpreted her response as being thrilled with the idea of leaving her life, but rather a "Yeah, sure, whatever you say, pal" kind of response. She finds Sonny's plan of moving to Algeria as so absurd, she gives him the "Yes" treatment, knowing that it will never come to fruition. If anything, the tragedy falls back on Pacino's character, with his delusions of grandeur.
Agreed with Nicholas’ take. She’s just humoring someone controlling her.
@@sallysmith7242I I think at that moment she was caught up in the excitement as it was clear to her by then that Sonny did not want to hurt them. TV cameras and all of them shown on TV leaving the bank, hundreds and hundreds of people outside, she got caught up in the moment and seeing this guy get away with it with all of them in Algeria makes her feel amused. She appears to be amused thinking she is a part of this craziness. Algeria? "What the hell, yeah!" I also do not think she was sure what was going to happen.
Or the fact sal can’t think of anyone to say goodbye to in his life
Sunny climes! Love this clip and of course "Wyoming".
To Fly to Cuba And come back in 83'🤣
The fact that Cazale or Pacino didnt win an Oscar is a travesty.
Thank you to whoever posted one of my alltime favorite movies.
Dal is the best guy 😉😂👍
Fuck the snow !!!
The way sal says Wyoming. He seems like a man who just wants PEACE :(
Plenty of warm or tropic spots in the world Fredo. And you chosen Wyoming. Should’ve either said: Mexico, Bahamas, Jamaica, Venezuela, Brazil, Spain, southern France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan (for Okinawa), the pacific islands etc.
I always just like to imagine Michael and Fredo took acid or something and imagined themselves robbing a bank lol
1:11 Sal knew they were doomed.
The goodfather multiverse madness
Cazale was brilliant in each of his 5 movies.
Fredo and Mike Corleone.
amazing amazing amazing movie.
Shit ! they've never made it to Algeria darn it I could've met AL PACINO there :'( and find him a place to stay
And sal died :(
How many Swifties even know that there's a Wyoming?
Thanks for uploading a great movie..💐💐💐💐💐
This is like fredo and Michael reverse their personality to each other
Algeria ? They walk around with them things on their heads their a bunch of crazy people lol
Jon Cazale was brilliant.
Fredo gonna be Fredo
A movie about Fredo and Michael stealing a bank
Best supporting rifle. M1.
Welcome friends :D
Hi 😎
In this movie, the director showed that fredo is still dumb and Michael is the leader
Any special country you want to go to, ? Wyoming,,,lol lol
0:46.
It would've been better if they asked for a jet to Cuba. Algeria would've extradited them.
Wayoming
If "Wyoming" was improvised then what was the original line?
State congressperson:
"When it comes to 'funding' public education, I have seen the future!" And it came to pass the slush funds got "slushier."
Algeria...

I'm not from America so please forgive me but why is this funny?
Because Wyoming is a state in their United States, not a country foreign to them.

Is there a special/warm country you want to go to?
Wrong answer only. Worst will be awarded.
Family business
The irony: in Algeria, the president bombs the terrorists and the american hostages: no nogociations with terrorist. This really happened.
They think they can get away even if they leave the country their plane will land in Algeria then they all free lol
I don`t get the joke "Wyoming"
That Wyoming ... isn't a country. John Cazale (Sal) improvised right on the scene by saying Wyoming in response to Sonny's question, but the thing was Wyoming wasn't even a country. Good thing Al Pacino was able to catch up and retain the flow of the scene and that's why this funny improvisation made it in the final cut.
John Cazale thought he fuxked up the scene when he said Wyoming because the producers were laughing at him. technically he did fuxk up but it made for a great funny scene lol
Also Wyoming is the most remote US state in that country, and the word "country" means both "a nation state" but also a "rural environment"
Algérien
I hear Wyoming is a beautiful country, but the language is very hard to understand and learn, and the soldiers posted at the border will shake Americans down for bribes.
