Al Pacino - 1973 interview

  • Drama critic Elliot Norton interviews actors Al Pacino (Richard III) and Paul Benedict (Duke of Buckingham), and director David Wheeler about a production of Shakespeare’s “Richard III” in the Church of the Covenant on Newbury St by the Theater Company of Boston. This production drew national attention because of Al Pacino, who had made his breakthrough the year before with The Godfather. Norton notes that Pacino started out opening night with a slight accent and he was nervous that the actor had “gone Mafia.” Pacino blames this on nerves, claiming that when he is nervous, he inadvertently slips into accents.
    Pacino explains that he has always wanted to do Shakespeare, because of his love of language. He used to do soliloquies from Hamlet and Macbeth alone in his room and chose to perform Shakespeare scenes for acting classes. He is inspired by the language and feels that as an actor, “language serves you,” as opposed to the other way around. He believes that today people are lazy and do not open their mouths to speak, so this is an opportunity to really use language. Although this is his first professional Shakespeare production, he talks about performing the first half hour of Richard III at the Actor’s Studio three or four years prior. In this production, he did not use a director, which he claims is the “best way to do it,” casting a sheepish look at director David Wheeler.
    Norton commends Pacino’s ability to balance playing the demon that kills his way to the crown and the comic that enjoys himself while opening up to the audience. Norton likes the way Pacino addresses the audience and sets it up as a ‘game’ in which he is enjoying himself and encourages the audience to do the same. Pacino feels that he connects so strongly with the audience that when he tells them about the crimes he committed, he starts to wonder about what they will do to him.
    Other subjects that were discussed include the decision for modern costumes and the use of the church as a playing space.

    I miss how interviews used to be. Now everything is such high energy and people have their answers ready to go. So loud, bright and in your face. And god forbid anyone appear downbeat or "depressed". Whenever I watch older interviews (i.e. Dick Cavett etc) they seem like people just having a genuine conversation. They're not yelling into the camera. They're speaking slowly, taking time to answer, taking time to let the other finish their thought. It just seems like an environment that fosters REAL interviews with interesting conversations.
    .....Also this has nothing to do with anything but god DAMN Al Pacino was fine as hell back in the day. I wish I could time travel back to the early 70s just so I could let Pacino destroy me lol

      You had me with ya until you said androgynous... he's anything but androgynous. In fact, I'd say that he was the perfect representation of a beautiful man. And beautiful doesn't mean feminine, it means, well, magnetic or mesmerizing! He was almost angelic, like one of those Roman sculptures or Renaissance paintings. In fact I would even say that he reminds of what a Roman god must like look, or like a dark angel... Anyways, I'm getting too poetic here. Pacino was just a damn gorgeous man who oozed masculinity. And not that stereotypical masculinity (like macho), he had an aura of silent power and charisma in his characters. Even as Tony Montana, who is one of his wildest characters...

    I know it's common for a person's voice to change when they get older, but it's still crazy to me just how much his changed from this interview in 1973 at age 33, to the interview he did 10 years later.

    • @DrCasey
      @DrCasey Рік тому +2

      Any reason his changed? Normally the change from 33 to 43 is imperceptible. The difference in my parents' voices in their 70s compared to their 30s is pretty mild.

    Thank you so very much for posting this. As a student of Literature, I can't tell you how happy I feel to know that Pacino had a great liking for Shakespeare especially the number of times he mentioned Hamlet's soliloquies... If I had a time machine, I'd love to go back to 60s and 70s to be in the era of the young Al Pacino and Robert Redford ... two people I have GREAT admiration for as actors and as humans...

    I seen Al in person at the Booth Theater in New York 1983 10 years after this interview, at the Booth he did American Buffalo. I still have the playbill. When he came out the back door, there we were waiting. Only 5’7 “but appears magnificent on screen.As he drove off in his black Cherokee Jeep my wife nearly got whacked by the front bumper. Here he just finished Michael Corleone, and was getting ready to do Serpico, Go t not grown. Al is an icon method Actor under Charlie Laughton, and Lee Strasberg. All will go down as the best Actor ever because of the rolls he chose.

    I love how he was in love with Shakespeare from a very young age. In all world literature, there is Shakespeare and then there is everyone else -- he is so good, it's addicting, and you just want to recite all his plays out loud and like never fucking read anything else ever again. Not surprised maybe the best actor of the last 50 years was a Shakes junkie -- though I would have loved to see him play Richard II, not III, as Richard II is the much better play and R2 himself has some of the best speeches Shakespeare ever wrote.
    What's so amazing is I watch The Panic In Needle Park from fucking 1971 -- and I think no way the guy playing Bobby isn't a real life junkie, a low ranking drug pusher who squats around Manhattan wherever he can find a place. It might be the best method acting anyone has ever done. That movie is addicting, because Pacino and Kitty Winn (a great Shakespeare actress in her own right) are acting at such a high level. And yet, that guy who played Bobby, in real life, is a quite, over-thinking reader of Shakespeare.
    I'm only surprised he didn't do more Shakespeare roles once he got really famous. Only Richard 3 and Shylock. Since he had the clout and money to either get casted or put on his own production.
    But man, what a fucking life. That is how you use your brain and your talents.
