  • Many people make the mistake of spending their entire budget on a higher end camera, assuming that it will give them amazing results. However, it's essential to remember that a filmmaker's toolkit comprises many other critical tools that are just as vital. It's only when you use these tools together that you can create awesome` outcomes.
    In this video, I'll be sharing my perspective on the best filmmaker kit that you can put together if you're starting out with a budget of $2500.

    2020- Started with the Sony A6400 and one zoom lens. Worked through covid with what I had. Now 3 years exactly to the date I am using an FX6, A7Siii and every lens I could need along with big budget lighting and audio. I made a lot of money with the a6400 and that one lens, just shows you can do anything with the smallest budget if you just add some creativity to the mix and DONT fall into the trap of comparing yourself to UA-camrs, honestly stay away from the bigger channels as they won't help you the will just make you sad..thanks for the video.

    Thank you for not posting a "Best kit for $500" since that is completely unreasonable to get something of quality. $2500 might still be a lot, but is definitely more pragmatic and realistic. Thanks to my wife, I have a used Sony A7Siii which is older but still a phenomenal BEAST of a camera that i have yet to master. But I was considering a GH5. What you said about the FX3 is so true - as things like proper glass, SD cards to shoot all the bit rates and all the little accessories like filters, batteries, cages, mics and all of that would easily put me over budget! It is so important to consider the overall "kit', otherwise all you have is an expensive paperweight. I have much to learn! Will be subscribing to learn more as I'm new on this journey as well.

      Oh man, $500 isn't doable at all. I think $1500 is the lowest I'd do, but I think $2500 is the sweet spot since it really allows for quality budget gear.
      I'd stick with your A7SIII for now, and just learn to master it. It's a phenomenal camera, and if you pair it with a quality monitor, you can really create some good images.

      @BemBoing I'm not a pocket 4k fan much anymore. I've got two that collect dust now that the GH6 is out. The only real decent thing about them is RAW, but I find that I'd rather rent a Komodo for RAW and get 16 stops of dynamic range, or use the GH6 ProRes.
      I think the GH6 is the best camera Lumix has made and the best camera under the R5C or C70 price point, on the market for filmmaking (not weddings or content creation). But I'll be coming out with a review soon on the GH6.

    hi, thanks for a great video.. I know is a year since this came up but found it now...
    like to ask you a couple of things
    - is there a point now in 2023 to not chose the gh5 and go with the gh5 ll?
    there is 400 dollar price difference between them as second hand cameras where I am looking now, a gh5 body is about 700 dollars and a gh5ll house/body 1200 dollars...
    so thinking that buying an used gh5 and add some lights to it is better than the gh5 ll and add some cheaper lights??... not sure..
    I am too new to this :)
    - but what lights would be good for low light situations to shoot both for podcasts but also to shoot actors at meter portraits but also to shoot them at about 3 meter distances for master shots ? what lights will let up a full master shot?
    - and what mic to start with?
    -is the zoom m3 a great choice or are there cheaper mics that could be better?
    -is it possible to add XLR jacks to this camera somehow with an adapter to connect the Shure 7b directly to the camera recording for podcasts?
    thanks! 😀

  • @billyoung9538
    @billyoung9538 Рік тому +3

    Just an opinion, but I would pick a Blackmagic pocket cinema camera 4k over the gh5, because it has better integrated audio options, a full copy of Davinci Resolve, and has much, much better video codecs that will allot one far more flexibility in post for an identical price new. Now admittedly you mention buying used gear, and while one can buy a used GH5 for less, I personally don't think one gets as much bang for ones buck out of the camera for narrative film making purposes.

    • @jeremypope-levison721
      @jeremypope-levison721  Рік тому +1

      So a pocket 4k is a great camera, but you make some sacrifices when buying it. Namely, you have to rig it out in order to get much time out of it, or carry bunches of LP-E6 batteries. The file sizes are really big, so you have to have more storage costs up front as well.
      I have two pocket 4ks and I much prefer the GH5, and especially a GH5 + atomos Ninja V over it.
      But the Pocket 4K is undoubtedly a phenomenal option. So you're correct that it has better options available, but it is lacking IBIS which can be useful, the GH5 10-bit 422 is still very flexible in post for narrative work. And if you're buying new, yes the pocket 4k could be a better choice. All depends on what you want. I just said a GH5 because for a lot of people it could be a better choice and the upgrade path is a GH6 which is, in my opinion, the best sub-$4500 camera for filmmaking

    • @billyoung9538
      @billyoung9538 Рік тому +2

      @@jeremypope-levison721 I do find it a bit ironic your GH5 set up was rigged out with V-mount batteries very much in the same way a pocket 4k would also use them. That said the pocket 4k running off standard LPE6 batteries can get around 35-60 minutes per battery depending on the brand, capacity and age of the battery, and there is an aftermarket battery grip/charger for the pocket 4k that uses 3 lpe6 batteries giving one about 1.5hr-3hr of battery life with out charging for about $40-$70. Power, in my opinion if far less of an issue than having the flexibility of its codecs.

    • @jeremypope-levison721
      @jeremypope-levison721  Рік тому

      @Bill Young I personally rig out my stuff, sure. But a lot of people might not want to have to.
      I've personally never gotten more than 30 minutes off of an LP-E6 on my Pocket 4Ks, even when they were fully charged new Canon batteries.
      Codec wise, the only upside is RAW, but I find the GH5 + Atomos way better than the Pocket 4K. The pocket doesn't have great highlight roll-off and retention compared to the GH5, and the GH6 blows the 4k out of the water.
      But buying a grip, tons of batteries, and all that will add extra cost. In my video I'm talking about a used GH5, which I've seen for as low as $500. The pocket 4k, as I said in the previous comment, is a great option. But there are trade-offs to make with the camera. I have two that collect dust and are only used for UA-cam because I find the GH6/GH5 combo so much better honestly. I can get an hour and a half off each battery, meaning I can run for 4.5 hours without having to charge

    Sick video man! I personally am on the Sony system, you can’t go wrong with the a6000 series of cameras. They have aps-c sensors and the e mount has a huge variety of lens options. They probably wouldn’t be as good as the gh5 in terms of image quality and codecs, but they have good autofocus and can do both photo and video very well. I think they are a better choice for someone who just wants to pick up photo or video as a hobby. What do you think of the higher end Sony cameras (fx3, a7iv, fx30, etc)? And what makes you choose Panasonic over them?

    • @jeremypope-levison721
      @jeremypope-levison721  Рік тому

      Thanks man!
      Most people don't really know that the GH5 actually does produce some quality photos. I've used it many times and people have been impressed with the photos. There's a lot of rumors that spawn about the Panasonic line-up but the main reason people don't use them is autofocus. Which is why I didn't mention content creators or weddings in my video.
      The Sony is better for hobbyists, I'll agree. But I think the GH5 is better for filmmaking. Again, this is my opinion, so if Sony works for you, then keep on keeping on man!
      As for the higher end cameras, there's positives and negatives to them. I the FX3 and FX30 aren't photo cameras so someone like me who does photo and video, Panasonic is a better choice. As for the A7 IV or A7SIII, I'd say budget comes into mind for the A7SIII. But I'd take the S5 II over A7 IV mainly because it has the tools for filmmakers. A lot of those hybrid Sony cameras don't have the same level of tools. But that's why I use the GH6. Because it was meant for people like me.
      It all comes down to preference though. I like Lumix so I stick with it.

    You have definitely earned a subscriber. I am trying to streamline my kit even though i really not a gear head but i am planning on selling a panasonic g6, panasonic g85, olympus 14-35 f2 lens for m4/3 and its adapter. I am also selling the weeylite ninja 300 I have to get a one light system, so I can use one controller for everything. What brand would be good to go into, aperture, smallrig, godox, sokani etc. I was wondering if an amaran 60d is good for my first light into the aperture lineup or if it would be better to get something with a stronger bowens mount like 100d, if bicolor is necessary or daylight is enough. So far daylight has been enough but you never know so wanted to ask based on your experience. I had one last question based on the panasonic gh6 because it looks like my possible a A cam because of the amazing features that my panasonic s1 does not have. I am keeping s1 because of the image and photo capabilities for my clients but want certain features like 48fps, record button on bottom left, flip out/tilt screen etc but i worry about the dynamic range. The s1 looks so gorgeous that I feel weird calling it my B cam but It does not have some of the features the gh6 has, so how does the dynamic range compare, do you see the streaking issue, and does dynamic range boost cause noise problems. Sorry for the long comment but I would love an answer.

    • @jeremypope-levison721
      @jeremypope-levison721  Рік тому

      Let me see if I can all this.
      As far as lights, I highly recommend the Godox line-up. They are as powerful and silent as the aputure equivalents. I've had the Godox VL150 for a few years and it's been amazing. But as far as connectivity, the aputure products are the best, then smallrig. Not sure if the amaran line up has the same connectivity as their 120, 300, 600 lineup though.
      Depending on the strength you need, a 60x is fine for things like corporate interviews, product videos, but you would need more power for commercial work. When I shoot commercials, I'm generally renting multiple 300ds or a 600d. But daylight vs bi-color is up to you. I did daylight and I use gels when I need to change the color. A lot cheaper to use gels than buy bi-color.
      As for the gh6, all I can say are positives really. I haven't noticed a streaking issue. I can't speak to the dynamic range comparison to the S1, but the dynamic range is amazing on the gh6. Haven't had problems with it. With all gh series cameras you will experience noise in the shadows but I wouldn't say it's a problem. Expose 1 stop over and you'll be fine. Dynamic range boost does work, but I only use it if I'm shooting above 2000 ISO anyway so not something I use regularly.
      If I didn't answer everything, feel free to ask again but I hope this all helped
