Very thorough review. I bought the AV-30C to replace my DG. I haven't got it installed yet though. I will most likely get a 2nd to replace the AI and ditch the vacuum system as well. Thanks for posting!
I'm glad you found it helpful. Having two would be a great update to the panel and loosing the vacuum system sounds like a great idea. Less weight more safety.
I know! I also like that it can be used with a lo of different GPS's because of the different protocols it can use. Also it's light. I didn't even go in to that during the review but if you put two of them in it'd give me about 10 pounds or more weight savings as I pull my entire vacuum and all the hoses and ventures. There are so may bonuses to a system like this it's difficult to give all the information in a 10 minuet video. I thought about breaking it up into 2 or 3 videos. One fore the "What it does" One for the AI mode and DG mode and the third for the flight portion. Instead I just went over the basics. The AOA itself could have 5 minuets of demo, the speed tape and Vertical Trend along with DG and heading on the AI could also use up 5 minuets. There are so many functions and that all this information is presented in a very easy to read and interpret fashion. I am really considering putting a second in to replace the DG so I have PFD and MFD.
I've heard that the AV30c as a DG replacement isn't the best due to excessive precession... Hopefully they're fixing the bugs. Looks like a awesome option!
There was just an update released that takes care of any DG procession. The old DG procession I had online was no worse than any other mechanical DG, with this upgrade I guess procession is minimal.
A year later and the precession is still an issue. Also when it is function locked in DG mode there doesn’t appear to be a way to adjust the heading after it drifts?
@@GreatMichiganBushCo I do not, but plan on obtaining 2 AV-30 and 1 AV-20s. (Thought I’d subscribed earlier. Will do now. I learned more in your video today than I have in 12+ months about these avionics)!
Thanks for the review Scooter. My question is with a taildragger, for initial setup, do you need to supply the factory with any information specific to you plane, or is there specific steps you must take before each flight so that it displays correctly ?
No. It comes recalibrated from the factory for level flight and then you can "trim" it in menu for installation position. The AOA is set by doing a stall series very similar to the AV20. There is guidance in the pilot manual on how this is done. You then set the AOA limit in the instrument manually. I was able to do it in one flight in both the AV-30 and AV20. There is a short alignment period after you turn on the aircraft master where it orientates itself (maybe 10 seconds) that you shouldn't be moving. I hope you don't turn on the master and have the airplane moving in 10 seconds :-) so no specific steps before each flight. Very simple setup.
Thank you Scooter. Currently I have an RC Allen, RCA2600 Electronic Attitude Indicator. The factory required the degrees of panel tilt in order to set it up properly at the factory. It's in a Cessna 170B. It's not been correctly displaying since installation and is frustrating. We are working with them now to correct this but i'm considering just replacing the instrument. The AV-30 seems like a terrific improvement at 1/3 the cost...
I think I know what you are asking. Same issues with my Bonanza: the ground stance is not the same as the normal cruise stance. There is a procedure for pilots to make cruise and stall AOA adjustments within a pretty wide set of angles.
My student just put one in his C-152. It's a great instrument. I'm still getting used to all the functions. It hard to decide which to make primary there are so many choices. I like the G meter and the AoA function. Although the AoA function shows a stall way too soon in the C-152. I can fly the plane well into slow flight and the AoA is showing full red way before the stall. But The instrument makes all the others brands like the Garmin G-5 seem underwhelming.
The AOA stall indication needs to be calibrated. In the pilots manual is the calibration procedure. It will provide an accurate AOA. I am fairly amazed at how much information is clearly presented to the pilot on one 3" gauge. There is one feature that I discover the altitude at the end of the prior flight seem to be "remembered." So when you turn the instrument it keeps that altitude and adjusts the barometric pressure to read it.

Curious on the installation in your panel to not show the four mounting screws. Have have a very similar panel and wouldn't want the four screws showing. Great video!!
My sub panel is a little recessed in that area and I was not changing it. One day after flying we took a couple of hours and pulled the attitude indicator the next morning we installed and plumbed the AV-30. I was flying by noon. The sub panel could have been modified to not show the screws but the time and money involved didn't seem worth it.
The installation is very clean. As you stated, round display in a round hole, and it's a good looking display. A friend of mine removed the vacuum system from his Thorp T-18 and installed a single AV-30. However, the precession rate is so high that it's unreliable for heading information. As an example, on his first flight with the AV-30 the heading precessed over 200 degrees in 0.6 hours. The only way its software can be updated is through the d-sub connector, which means removing the instrument from the panel. Have you had issues with precession? On the other hand, I went less 'clean' for my T-18 panel upgrade and installed two Garmin G-5s with a remote magnetometer. Software updates are done through an mini-SD card inserted in the front of the instrument. Certainly more expensive, but no issues with precession. But, there's that square-instrument-in-a-round-hole thing.
I have not had any procession close to that with my install. Mine has been about standard for a DG, maybe 5 degrees in 30 minuets. That is about the theoretical rate at my latitude. I’ll watch it more closely and if I see different I’ll let you know. I thought ahead on my install and have some access to the D sub connector without pulling the instrument knowing that software upgrades would be in its future. It was convenient that the location I wanted to install the instrument at allowed for easy access.

Have you been able to get the AOA to calibrate to anything more than one configuration? It doesn’t seem to work when you add flaps? I’ve calibrated the low point with flaps and it all that it does is give you an aoa warning when you do a steep turn. No alert base to final or in the flare... i’ve called uavionics and have been told by an engineer that it only does one flight confirmation, however the manual says it can be configured to read for flaps as well as clean configuration.
I calibrated mine with flaps. It works just fine for me. I had some problems with the AV 20 AOA not as accurate as I would like in different aircraft configurations. The AOA and the AV 30 seems to be rock solid. I just followed the directions Uavionix had in the owner's manual precisely and it worked great.
Thanks. Been considering this for my 1957 C172 to keep that classic look. You convinced me. Gonna make my order. So what did it cost to install - or did you do it? Thanks again.
I wish I was an A&P. Installation time was a few hours. My install was very simple, when the AV-20 was installed there was some work done in the back to make the addition of this instrument quick.
It was received Friday morning, Friday afternoon was spent pulling the old attitude indicator and correcting an old problem with the panel (The old attitude indicator wasn't centered in overlays hole) The next morning the installation began at about 8:00am and the aircraft was flying at noon. The installation also included a temperature probe.
I like your review, I'd be curious what your costs ended up being installing? It did watch a little bit like an ad/salesman pitch at the beginning(you weren't given this right). I haven't seen anyone cover the airspeed color tape yet, so good job covering that. Seems a little silly you can't piggyback the temp prob off the av-20. It seems like a great instrument for those post war antique style airplanes. I wish you good luck with it but I've heard some mixed things with the unit being erroneous from a IG aviator. She didn't have much good to say but granted it was the non certified version, no idea what their build/QC is between the two. You say there's a lot of information laid out and I'm hesitant that is almost too cluttered, but then again you can declutter the gauge as much or as little as you want. Good job overall, I hope they get the slaved DG feature out soon and that it plays well with some legacy equipment like a kln89/90b and what not
I'm not sure. I know this does not require a monthly subscription service to have full functionality, and has many of the features the 275 have has available. The AV-30 can be purchased by an individual directly from a distributor and installed by any mechanic. Besides that I have no firsthand experience with the Garmin GI-275.
It can't be used for primary source it can be used for advisory. So you can't replace your GPS navigation head with it, but you can use it for advisory information off the GPS navigation head. In other words you can use that information while you're flying IFR as long as it's backing up a certified IFR piece.
I find it odd how this rumor has been proliferated. There seems to be one or two people who had a problem with excessive precession. I'm not sure if it was installation errors, a poor unit, or just someone exaggerating drift. Anyway s couple of the guys I fly with have theses and we find precession near the theoretical limits for our latitude. Once this was reportrd on a forum the rumor spread like wildfire. These don't have flux detectors so there will be some drift, in my experience it's much less than a directional gyro.
@@GreatMichiganBushCo Actually I have 2 of these in my PA28-140 and the DG drifted about 15 degrees in 5 minutes on the ground sitting still and drifts alot in flight as well. I also had a bank of 10 degrees on my AI after rolling level after a constant rate turn of 15-20 degrees bank for about 20 seconds. After I rolled wings level, the AI had a bank of 10 degrees for about 5 seconds before it leveled. As far as the DG drift, i have to turn on the master and let the AI and DG align for about three minutes before starting the plane and turning on the avionics master in order to make the problem "better." Also going from GPS track mode back to Heading DG makes the drift worse and may be up to 20 degrees off. uAvionics said they are coming out with a firmware update to correct the drift.
Really enjoying and getting a lot out of your STOL series. I have lots of carrier landings in a former life and now am looking for a ranch commuter that can get me safely in/out of a 600ft dirt pasture flight deck with similar clear approaches (lake at one end). I would really appreciate your thoughts on the Stinson for this mission. The ability to load up 3 folks for a flight with a normal runway is gravy. There doesn’t seem to be much published info on the web concerning Stinson STOL performance. There are a couple of nice looking 108-2s on barnstormers that seem very reasonably priced.
I'll add more to the STOL series soon. Just repitched the propeller and looking to loose some weight in the plane. 600' with a Stinson loaded with 3 people might be a stretch. The weight carrying ability is where this plane gets a short takeoff. You can go out real short with only one person and light fuel. A fully loaded aircraft has increased the empty weight by over 40%. With such a large percentage of the gross weight being useable you end up with 2 different airplanes. I talk about it all the time and still had a friend try to kill his wife and kids one day with a heavy 108 on a hot day. The book numbers are how this airplane performs at gross and that's not bad but light the 108 really does a good job.
I know. It doesn't have to be. I always keep it on me reserve tank so I know how much reserve fuel I have, and fly time on the other tank. This method eliminates the chance of forgetting to switch the gauge when you switch tanks and losing track of how much fuel you have.

Is there a setting to allow it to indicate less than 40kts?
I am not sure. Next time I'm in the menus I'll check
Quick question. How do you convert the IAS to MPH from KTS?
You can set the miles per hour in the menu system. Otherwise miles per hour times 1.15 equals knots.
How is the precession? I have one waiting to be installed.
I haven't had much of a problem with procession in my unit.
@@GreatMichiganBushCo thank you 😀 hopefully soon there will be support for a remote magnetometer but glad to hear a good report.
I would like to know how hard was the install? i have a 175A and looking for upgrade to this. i am a A&P what kinda ppwk was it ?
Good job overall, I hope they get the slaved DG feature out soon and that it plays well with some legacy equipment like a kln89/90b and what not
How much and how does it compare to the 275 Garmin?
I'm not sure. I know this does not require a monthly subscription service to have full functionality, and has many of the features the 275 have has available. The AV-30 can be purchased by an individual directly from a distributor and installed by any mechanic. Besides that I have no firsthand experience with the Garmin GI-275.
The manual says it's not certified for IFR navigation I believe. Some functionality can be used for IFR but not the waypoints/etc.
It can't be used for primary source it can be used for advisory. So you can't replace your GPS navigation head with it, but you can use it for advisory information off the GPS navigation head. In other words you can use that information while you're flying IFR as long as it's backing up a certified IFR piece.
Great review. I’m almost sick of my vacuum system. Did you remove your vacuum system?
I need to purchase a AV-30 to replace my DG.
@@GreatMichiganBushCo Scooter do you mind To share how long the install Tom was for this AV 30 C?
It was a 1 day install.
@@GreatMichiganBushCo So figure on 8 hours of an AP/IA? Thanks!!!
@@mopar92 mine didn't take that long. I know a guy who works in Troy who is an authorized installer I can get you in touch with.
What instrument did you pull to put this in?
I replace the attitude indicator with the AV 30.
What do you have ? Alternator or generator??
I have a generator.
Thanks for the review. Did you hook up a gps source yet?
Not yet. I need to rewire the GPS harness and that will probably happen when I take it down for winter operations.
I've heard that there is excessive drift in the heading, have you noticed that?
@@stephenreinhart4673 and that firmware update is out.
@@GreatMichiganBushCo Where do I access this?
@@GreatMichiganBushCo Just spoke with uAvionix and the update is for experimental aircraft only, still working on certified aircraft
No GS/GP needle?
It has a GPS needle and I'm going to do a video on that the future. I need to redo my GPS harness.
New to me. I want one
Yes I wanted one too What a fantastic instrument.
7:30. Why is it showing 200fpm climb while you're still on the ground?
That static system error in my aircraft. The Stinson's system is 75 years old, they were still sorting out some issues.
Thx!! Now i gotta put one in my -3! Lol
It's not vintage but a very well balanced solution to better situational awareness.
That’s what my Ercoupe wants.Shes so needy these days for 21st century toys 🤣
It would look good in an earcoupe
If I do get the Stinson I’m thinking of getting this is what I’d like to do. Delete the vacuum system.
Thank is a very wise idea. What I'll end up doing.

Your fuel guage switch is not set to match fuel selector position!
I know. It doesn't have to be. I always keep it on me reserve tank so I know how much reserve fuel I have, and fly time on the other tank. This method eliminates the chance of forgetting to switch the gauge when you switch tanks and losing track of how much fuel you have.

Just be sure to cross check Airspeed and Altitude every once and awhile to make sure something hasn't gone wonky.
Thanks probably sound advise yet not sure how it would go wonky.
Hey Scooter how come your legs shaking like that ? Is somebody rubbing your belly ?
I've been doing that since I was 3. Just doesn't stop.
