      Yes and no, they both appear to be *of* Clavicus, Barbas having been made from Vile's his power and essence after Clavicus already existed but they are separate entities with separate thoughts and ideas that merely act in tandem as equals.

    I personally have always taken the mask. Never once have I gotten the axe except through a cheat code, and I’m actually glad for that. I like Barbas as a character, despite the short time you get to know him.

    • @joshuahunt3032
      @joshuahunt3032 6 років тому +6

      David Potts Good on you, because, fun fact, choosing the rueful axe over the masque locks you out of the Oblivion Walker achievement if you haven’t already lost that opportunity. In other words, by the achievement system’s standards, the rueful axe doesn’t count as a daedric artifact.

    • @davidpotts7116
      @davidpotts7116 6 років тому +3

      Joshua Slowpoke yep, I found that out after searching up the axe after taking the mask. It’s kind of stupid though if you ask me. It’s handed to you by a Daedric Prince, and made by him, yet it’s not a Deadeic item? Explanation needed lol

      @@mehlessmidori602it's also the slowest two handed weapon in the game iirc. Or at least the slowest battleaxe. Weirdly enough it's also my favourite weapon appearance in the game. Like if forsworn could forge steel. And it's all shiny, I like to imagine it's made with silver for slaying werewolves. But yeah, I typically choose the mask because I usually play moral characters who don't kill for no reason.

      Vile keeps his deals from his own volition, the same can not be said about Loki. Loki usually only upheld his part of deals when he was forced to by more powerful gods or other beings. Though Loki wasn't a pseudo-god, as far as I'm aware, he was no less a god than Thor or Odin. Vile seems to have less of a disposition towards tricking the other daedric princes, more concerned with mortals, unlike Loki. Apart from this, there are some similarities, but the comparison with traditional tales of the devil seem more apt, considering Vile's obsession with deals and his willingness to strike deals that aren't favorable to him.

      Harry Cope you have to already own a house with a weapon rack (I used breezehome, it's the most reliable) and you have to have the axe In your hand.
      Jump on top of his head (facing toward the back exit with the gate already open) and talk to him, pick the dialogue option to give him back the axe and get the mask, as soon as he starts the dialogue, exit out of the conversation and run out the door (note you should NOT be able to move your camera after a very short time after exiting dialogue, that's normal don't worry). As soon as you load up outside go to your map and fast travel to the city (or location) with your house.
      He should still be talking at this point.
      Once you load up, run into your house, you _should_ now be able to move your camera, turn to your weapon rack and put the axe on it.
      If you did it right you should get a message saying it was removed from your inventory and that the mask was added, you now have both.
      Note you have quite a short amount of time to complete these steps as it's just the time it'd take the dialogue if you stayed in the cave with him.

    barbas and clavicus don't really as much share power. it's more like they're really the same entity metaphysically. Barbas is the part of the whole which is most reasonable of the two. as we see in skyrim, when you make a deal with barbas, he upholds his end of the bargain exactly as you expect him to, provided that you don't kill him. and even when barbas' power returns to clavicus and he absorbs him for a time being, he is still reasonable and lets you keep the axe if you "killed" barbas. Barbas is to calvicus what jiminy cricket is to pinochio.
    The reason why i say this is because daedric princes are singularities. they don't share their sphere, they are their sphere, if you mantled him like you do with sheogorath in oblivion, you'd still get a barbas. Barbas is the machiavelli of bargains, reasonable and only acts in the best interest of his other half and partner clavicus, even if it is against clavicus' wishes. and clavicus acts on whim and emotions that occur in the moment. One thinks long term consequences and benefit, the other just the immediate satisfaction. And aren't these the very corner stones of bargains? when you deal with clavicus, you want the immediate satisfaction, and you're going to be dealing with the side which is just as interested with the immediate reward he will get should he double cross you. Which is why deals with barbas, always end up better for the individual.

One of my favorite parts of The Elder Scrolls games is when you meet the Daedra like Clavicus and Mora and instead of demanding service or worship they simply offer a deal to the player. I enjoy stories in which mortals attempt to usurp powers or forces out of their control and these actions ultimately end in their demise. Good work. Aside from the build videos these are my favorites coming out from you guys.

    Fun fact, the modern appearance of the devil in Christian mythology having horns, hooves, etc. was actually a direct reference to Dionysus who was a very popular god of worship during the time of early Christianity. He was the god of wine (among other things) and was commonly depicted with horns and hanging around satyrs. Satyrs, or fauns, were small humanoids with horns, tails, and hooves. It was pretty much a very successful religious smear campaign.

    Fun fact: if you claim the Rueful Axe instead of the Masque of Clavicus Vile in Skyrim, it won’t count toward the achievement for getting all of the daedric artifacts (assuming your version of the game has achievements at all). In other words, keeping the rueful axe and killing Barbas locks you out of the Oblivion Walker achievement.

    Its funny how Clavicus prides himself on duping people into a sour bargain, and then you can come along and bug the game using the Slow Time shout at the end of his quest and dupe him into giving you the mask whilst you keep the axe as well. I guess even Daedras are no match for shoddy programming...

    I like to think Barbas is adventurer of old. The prehistorical champion who made a tricky deal with Clavicus and forced him to share his power. But then daedra played his usual part and turned the smart as in to his loyal servant. (Mirak's case but played in Vile's style)

  • @avitus5770
    @avitus5770 4 роки тому

    Hah the way you use "Pan" is funny, as it translates to Mister. So that is not in fact the characters first name, but the title, making the translation "Mr. Twardowski". The W's in his last name are also pronounced more like F's instead. Great videos by the way!

    The rueful axe is a 4th wall breaking bad weapon. The character is screwed out of a good weapon and the player misses out on an achievement. I think it is intentional for the weapon to be this useless to the character and player.

    Guys, "Pan" is actually polish for "Sir" or "Mister", it's not a name. Twardowski the fictional character's first name is never revealed. That said, the real 16th century nobleman that this character is believed to be based on was named Jan Twardowski, the guy was a court warlock (!) in the court of polish king Sigismund Augustus the 2nd ;D

    I've always seen Vile and Barbas as two halves of one entity, neither any more valid than the other-- a joint prince.
    I don't think they've ever been truly one, nor truly sovereign of eachother.
    In a way, it's kind of like the aspects of Hircine, perhaps.

    On the subject of devils, deals, deceptions, and dogs, there is a legend in Wales, known as the Devil's Bridge. The story goes, that an old woman needed to cross a river/ravine, so the devil appeared, and offered to create a bridge for her to cross. The price being the soul of the first mortal to cross it. She agreed to this, and when the bridge was in place, she threw a loaf of bread across the bridge, bating a dog to cross first. The devil did not claim the dog's soul, and since then two more bridges have been built over the original Devil's Bridge.
