Even nicer than the time he helped his next door neighbor Flanders cope with his loneliness caused by the loss of his wife with the help of good ol' Mr. Plow?

In that case, even Carl was acknowledged, yet he stayed true to Lenny and helped him. That's what you call an honest support from a freind!
"Aaronson and Zowkowski are the two biggest gossips in town" I never noticed that joke before... how the cut it between calls and made it seem like she called everyone in the phone book, when she'd only actually called two people.
The early seasons had lots of hidden jokes like that. I liked how the show was willing to challenge the audience and not assume we're idiots who can't figure out joke if it isn't explicitly poimted out to us. If they made that joke in a modern episode they would've spend the next minute hammering the point that she didn't actually call everyone so that everyone in the audience would definitely get it
One of the most intelligent in the show. Making you think that Patty and Selma has called to each number in Springfield, just to punch you in the face with the simple reveal that they called just to *two* gossips. That's what The Simpsons lacks now: That simple punch of surprise with a very simple joke.
