In 1976, LeDoux won the world bareback riding championship at the National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City. Winning the championship gave LeDoux more credibility with music audiences, as he now had proof that the cowboy songs he wrote were authentic.

Chris had a short, but very full and fascinating life. He passed away at age 57, in 2005. He was a fan favorite in the rodeo circuit, and a well decorated rider. He wrote and produced his first 22 albums, turning down many offers from recording companies. His big break came when Garth Brooks mentioned his name in Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old) , on his second album. Chris then signed with a record label. He had one top 10 song, a duet with Garth Brooks called Whatchu Gonna Do With That Cowboy. Me and my best friend sang it, for his wife, at their wedding reception. Chris retired early from rodeo riding, but left a huge mark on the sport. After he passed away of cancer, Garth came out of retirement, just to write and sing a tribute to Chris, called Good Ride Cowboy. He then went back into retirement until his 3 girls got through high school.

I saw Chris in concert back in the 90s...he was the opening act for Garth Brooks. One of Garth's first hits commented about listening to "a worn out tape of Chris LeDoux", which gave a huge boost to Chris' career. We lost Chris in 2005. When you get a chance, listen to his son, Ned LeDoux. Ned sounds a great deal like his father. (BTW, thanks for doing this reaction. Love seeing your videos.)

I met Chris when I was competing in high school rodeo, at the Days of 47 rodeo in Salt Lake City, Chris the pride of Kaycee, Wyoming always took the time to connect to the youth. He took the time to give me advice. He was the bareback Bronc professional champion in 1976. Check out his Bang a Drum with Jon Bon Jovi. Here is my favorite Chris line.
"Sit tall in the saddle, Hold your head up high
Keep your eyes fixed where the trail meets the sky
And live like you ain't afraid to die
And don't be scared, just enjoy your ride"
Now don't be scared, just enjoy your ride

We are a rodeo family. My son was a young and upcoming bullrider (what this song is about) and this was his all-time favorite song. He was murdered at the age of 19, and we played this song at his funeral. Some people thought it wasn't appropriate but I wanted the funeral to be about Travis and his life. We also played my personal favorite Ledoux song, "This Cowboy's Hat". That one sure tells a good story!!!

I'm a 6th generation Texan. We came here in 1831. My great great grandfather captured Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto. Today, he would be considered a young boy, in fact, he was called the boy soldier of Valasco. He was the last messenger to leave the 7:28 Alamo. He caught the measles and couldn't go back. The measles is why I am here today. Anyway, my whole family are "horse" people. I was with the National Cutting Horse Association as Editor of their magazine and wrote a book called "It's the Ride Darlin," so when you come down here, get on a good Quarter Horse, take a little ride and feel the experience.
BE SURE TO WEAR A HAT.

My favorite artist, check out "You just can't see him from the road". Chris was a world champion bareback rodeo rider and an inspiration for me when I was riding bareback as a kid and young man. I come from a ranching family, my aunt inherited it and married a rancher. When he died at over 90, I couldn’t listen to any of Chris’ music without crying. I felt as though the old cowboy era was passing by. Thankfully, the newer generations have not given up. There are so many great songs. There baby started fussing as the service was going on and right about the time my friend was getting up to take care of the kid someone tapped his shoulder and said I can help you. My buddy turned around and Garth Brooks had his hands out to take the baby. So my friend, a little took back said thanks and Garth walked around with he baby and kept him happy and quiet.

I grew up riding roughstock. Bulls & Broncs. We always listened to this before riding. It definitely pumps you up

The build up reminds me a little of "Lunatic Fringe" by Red Rider.

Chris LeDoux goes hard. I grew up going to Rodeos (riding steers and bulls) with my family, 3 brothers and we all rode, my dad would always throw this song on when we were getting close to the Arena. The amount of adrenaline you feel before getting on is INSANE and this song still gives me butterflies every time.
check out Cadillac cowboy by LeDoux.. also another classic rodeo song.

    Love the song.
Loved to play it, John Lee Hooker and AC/DC while driving. Behind the chutes I didn’t pump up with music. I was focused mentally and quiet. It’s a great driving song.

Chris Ledoux was one of the greatest to ever sing about the cowboy lifestyle. He not only sang about he lived it.He never become corporate he stayed true to his roots.I was lucky enough to see him in concert 7 times before he passed away.He inspired artist like Garth Brooks,Cody Johnson and many more.He passed away way to young.

Chris LeDoux was an amazing person. His concerts were so electrified. Garth Brooks copied a lot of Chris’s performances cause he was his idol. He has a few great songs “This Cowboys Hat” , “Cadillac Ranch”, “ Even Cowboys Like a Little Rock and Roll”, “ Whatcha Gonna Do With the Cowboy”, “Copenhagen”, “Copenhagen Angel”, “Five Dollar Fine (for whining)” (must do the music video for this one), “Stampede”, “Silence on the Line”, “Gravitational Pull”, “For Your Love”, “Life is a Highway” and “Look at you Girl”. After he died Garth Brooks did a tribute to him using Chris’s band Western Underground called “Good Ride Cowboy”. His band Western Underground is still performing today with Chris’s son playing drums. 6:12 the guitarist is Mark Sissel.

Rode bulls in teens & early 20’s. Chris was one of only rodeo cowboy bareback riders & singers. We wore his tapes out.

Grew up with rodeo & I wouldn't trade it for nothing. Met so many great people & even though the schedules were tough & the only way to collect a check is to ride no matter if you hurt or didn't get much sleep the night before. Some cowboys & cowgirls ride their rough stock draw & they can't even stay long enough to see if their score holds up before they are on to their next rodeo. Some days I miss it & some days.... The only event for us girls in a PRCA rodeo is barrel racing & I didn't do much of that but I was there for support for my cousin who was fighting bulls or later for my husband who was a team roper. When I watch rodeos today it's usually on tv & I miss the sounds, smells & excitement of the crowds. When someone talks about how they play baseball or football & it's so grueling, I tell them to go to a rodeo, then we'll talk about grueling.
PRCA card is Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association. You need a pump up song when you are getting ready to ride a bronc, bareback horse or a ton (literally) of angry hamburger. 😆

Buckouts at Charlie's in lubbock tx in the late 90's. 2hr drive to lubbock would listen to several times, then the 2hr ride home we would listen to the rest of his songs about being broke and busted up. Aah, good times
