That's Scharnhorst and Gneisenau in the Baltic pre-Norway, with shots of each ship from each other (look at the subtly different black paint trim), and a very brief shot of ADMIRAL HIPPER at 17.12. Blucher appears nowhere! This is a very valuable historical film. Thank you.
Most of these men died very young, drowned in freezing water over the disagreements of men they would never meet. Today they rest forgotten, painted as demons, one and all. That's what happens when you don't get to write your own history.
had war ended differently, one thing is sure: Europe certainly would not have had that new invasion the which will not last only 5 years but till the end of it.
"Today they rest forgotten, painted as demons, one and all. "Gentlemen, the battle against the Scharnhorst has ended in victory for us. I hope that any of you who are ever called upon to lead a ship into action against an opponent many times superior, will command your ship as gallantly as the Scharnhorst was commanded today." Admiral Bruce Fraser
Battleship on the Move. amazing. i joined the navy in 1970, assigned DD-727 (WW2 vet, just like about 1/4 of the crew). it is just awesome how little ships changed in 30 years. stainless steel food service/prep equipment now, instead of porcelain faced, but nearly the same set-up. when was on USS JFK, engineering, my last ship, nearly nothing had changed. i knew exactly what that black-gang on the boiler burner-front was showing for the propaganda film, and what Flank Speed, Smoking Black meant. and all that was from nearly 30 to 50 years ago. i don't miss a day of it. excellent vid. subbed! edit: read the description. i learned a little history today. Thank you!
Maybe they filmed both and put the footage together..? As you said, they used both ships at different times in the film. Btw; thanks for the extra information!
You see both sisters in this clip - Scharnhorst has the mast behind the hangar and Gneisenau behind the funnel. Gneisenau has a closed and her sister an open bridge. When the main guns are firing, you can see both together ! As you can also see two destroyers, it must be the operation "Nordmark" together with Admiral Hipper in February 1940. As you see no enemy contact, it can't be their first mission in November 39 (as it is also said winter 39/40 in the clip), because they sank a british cruiser there - and that would be definitely in the movie ! The planes "attacking" are germans, so just a drill. Or maybe a mixture of operations.
I imagine as German people watched this film in theaters their hearts filled with pride in their mighty navy. A few years later as flames burned through their neighborhoods I wonder if any of them remembered that feeling.
I am russian yacht owner from VLadivostok . On our boatstation we have old german aluminium boat 1938 ...in a nice conditions ! Germany this is qualiti !
after alot of digging around, im convinced this is the best wartime kreigsmarine film on the site. Its very cool especially when it leaves port to that music. very similar to begining of red october.
Often amazes me how much goes into building something that could be sunk in matter of minutes. At Portsmouth explosion museum there are some large gun breaches, all made of brass. To think much of this is at the bottom of the sea.
Fantastic historical film of times gone by, both sides had some incredible ships, a hard life aboard but it shows what teamwork was required to sail a ship like this.
They had everything from shoemaker to dentist. I didn't know that. A town of it's own and a great fighting mashine. If they would have had more of them the british kids would be Geman native speakers today.
It was a resource issue, Germany was locked into the Baltic or raced out into the Arctic sea. The Royal navy were huge and well resourced due to our empire, Germany could never compete.
Look at all the German technical wizardry. Why only use 10 parts to make it work when you can use 30?. I say this as a German. I cant speak about fire control, electrical or radar, but the engineering plants on German warships of this era were nightmares. Technically brilliant, but nightmares
Very interesting footage ! The crew of the Gneisnau as shown here was luckier than that of her sistership Scharnhorst which was sunk by the British battleship HMS Duke of York off the north of Norway in frigid waters, poor souls. Amazing failure that they had only 11 inch cannon !
great film, closed caption would have been nice but we are just lucky this stuff exists Many Japanese pictures of the attack on Pearl Harbor were lost with the Akagi at midway.
That was interesting ... nice to see all sailors, regardless of country, have the same chore. I was impressed to see a blacksmith performing his trade. I don't think the American ships had any.

La vida a bordo es relatada con exquisita autenticidad, mucho de lo que vemos en este video se sigue haciendo en los buques actuales.
Schlachtschiff in Fahrt translates into "Battleship in action"?? No, no. "in Fahrt" obviously has to do with their serious emissions trouble as shown here: 04:50 . Ah, yes, back in the day when Germany didn't give a rat's ass about their carbon footprint! Make Germany Great Again! (How do you say that in Kraut? "Mach Deutschland Gross Wieder"? ....Ja! MacDeuGroW!!)
It's Gneisenau . About the time the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau had the Atlantik bows built, Scharnhorst had a main mast built, sited aft of the aircraft hanger. Gneisenau kept the main mast on the aft end of the stack. Looking at the video, the mainmast is on the aft end of the stack, so it must be Genisenau. Also, in the views of the main deck abeam the forward 11" gun turret, there are some sort of scuttles in the deck. Gneisenau had them; Scharnhorst didn't. I'm positive that is Gneisenau.

It is interesting to compare this film with American and British films of the same period showing life aboard warships. Some of the music could almost be interchanged with that of American naval films.
A funny neat view of it just before the war, when all this neatness will be obsolete and war routine will look very different from shiny sterility of this one.
Hitler had promised the Kreigsmarine Senior Staff that war wouldn't start till 1945 when told that they weren't ready in the mid 30's or there abouts. One can only imagine if that would have helped or hurt the Sea war situation as the Allies would have responded with military/Naval build ups of their own in response.
Also... it's crazy that Periscope has to "condemn" the regime under the title just to show a historical document... the Soviets killed far more, invaded just as many countries, the Japanese Empire was as brutal as they come, etc... but I don't recall ever seeing a channel having to condemn those regimes just for posting historic footage... the war was almost a century ago...

Germans are always very diligent and hardworking people. Awesome video!
Film , not video and it was just a schloct to join the military and die. All militaries do this, but don't give a damn for your life.

Scharnhorst-class were absolutely beautiful!
Admiral Hipper are also beautiful
...and the Bismarck class were more beautiful still ♍
Der Film , ein einzigartiges Dokument der Zeitgeschichte ! Es waren Menschen an Bord , wie du und ich , keine braunen Monster.

Спасибо за хроникальные кадры и историю!
With good music you dont need a narrators chatter. Was Herbert Windt the compose? He did Olympia's (1936) music.

Sogar eine Schmiede ist an Bord! Das hätte ich jetzt nicht gedacht

R.I.P Scharnhorst. 💝
Anyone know the title of the song at 20:09 ?
As an Australian boy I've always liked the German Kreigsmarine. In the 60s reading books I always wanted them to win. I'm saying this as a 7 year old.
living and working among others in america, i am thinking this as a 53 yr old, that you were right.

Auf dem gezeigten deutschen Patrouillenschiff sind die für das deutsche Volk sehr typische Organisation und Disziplin deutlich zu erkennen.
1900 German sailors died on that ship
Gneisenau had triple turrets with 2 main guns on each. That's more likely Scharnhorst which had triple turrets with 3 main guns on each.
That was an upgrade on Gneisenau that never happened.
Absolutely fascinating PK film. Are there more of its kind? Tirpitz or Prinz Eugen?

incroyable ce document..
I would translate "in action" vs. "on patrol"
german is my second. "fahren" to travel, or move, such as taking a bus or driving a car (recalling a massive failure VW ad)
"in Fahrt" does not imply any military action by itself, the nautical term would simply be "underway".
And you would be right
In German, Fahrt means "to travel", so on patrol is more correct than "in action."
Muy buen material, más allá del bando en el que estuvieran. Eran Hombres defendiendo su Patria. Mis respetos!!!
Look at this signalman showing off at 18:40 standing on the guardrail instead of the deck of his balcony.
The great video👍🏼
Amazing video
I always wondered how they painted Camouflage on warships did they have a model or did they just wing it ?
If the timeframe is 38-39, who were they shooting at, and how did that doctor win an Iron Cross without a war?
I think is footage of the sinking of hms Glorious. Also, the doctor might be a wwi veteran.
A few months later, in April, Blucher sank in the opening shots of the Norway invasion as it attacked Oslo.
That's scharnhorst
@Bern Alfie Saysip
According to the description box, it's the Gneisenau.
It is Gneisenau.
Bern Alfie Saysip Could also be Prinz Eugen.
second ship is Gneisenau, her after mast was on the funnel, Scharnhorst's was free standing and farther aft
